I was reading The Monkey King's Daughter (you can read the whole book for an hour) and apparently the protagonist is also Guanyin's grandchild? Can Guanyin be shipped?
I mean I can’t say like what are like the moral implications of shipping GuanYin itself cause that is so not my place but I’m still going to answer this cause it kinda of interesting when it comes to modern media. First off saying that like I have never really seen romance done with GuanYin. At least in a serious way. But if I had to take a guess it can be seen as 'possible' as much as like shipping anyone in Chinese mythos, in that isn't really taken seriously at all. In a lot of modern fan spaces there are a variety of crack ships for more humorous or hypothetical situations like I have seen literally the Star of Venus shipped with Jade Emperor just cause. But I don't see much with buddhas or bodhisattvas in either post-modern media nor in fan spaces. At least that isn't Wukong or Sanzang since they are both Buddhas. And I have done a whole thing about how Wukong for decades wasn’t seen as a romantic figure until like there was a huge character reconstruction, but that isn’t usually the case for most characters.
I would say that the most mainstream instance I can think off the top of my head is The Lost Empire (2001) where it had the main character has a romantic plot with Gaunyin herself. Of course, that wasn't really a masterpiece within itself but this was considered like a 'bad choice' more so that it was just a very strange and awkward romance at that.
Tumblr media
Funny enough I think I see more romantic for humor's sake on Guanyin in comic books or games as likes gags at most. Like in Westward comics (later a tv series) Guanyin has a celestial-turned-demon trying to pursue him that he always rejects. Another is more play for laughs but Guanyin in the Fei Ren Zai where people just don't know it's Guanyin and think she is so attractive.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I've seen some games that have Guanyin as like a pretty boy/girl but otherwise nothing even close to a romance plot. Those are more just for like aesthetics of making every character look overly attractive to sell it.
The best I can say is that is just kinda strange and a little strange personally but I can't say that it can be taken seriously. I mean Wukong is supposed to be a Buddha by the end of the novel, so if The Monkey King's Daughter has it that a buddha can have a daughter then there wouldn't be anything stopping the author from having a bodhisattva having kids.
#anon ask#anonymous#anon#ask#sun wukong#monkey king#guanyin#chinese mythos#monkey king's daughter#Wukong is pretty self contained within Xiyouji himself so asking for a little bit of suspension of disbelief can be understood#but Gaunyin has a much longer history that is far more embedded with Buddhist mythology#She isn’t just a character in Xiyouji#and it would be limiting to her just to make it so#but I do think that might be the case in some media when it comes to portraying Gaunyin#esp since most modern interpretations of Guanyin are from xiyouji material just cause the sheer amount of xiyouji content there is#I rarely see Guanyin stand alone moves/shows and there are some trust me but most of her portrayals are within xiyouji spaces#there is a lot of conversation about xiyouji either being a reconstruction or a deconstruction of religion#and while the book is SATURATED in allegorical meaning whether in taoism buddhism or chinese lore it is also seen as satire of religion#people can take xiyouji as pointing out the flaws in humanity but also the flaws of heaven as well as it humanizes both gods and buddhas#this kinda of humanization can be seen as disrespectful to a certain extent but it is what makes these figures more engaging as characters#from a writing standpoint at least#this is me just rambling now about the interesting dycotomy that xiyouji has and has had with religion and how that can be see as today#to a certain extent a lot of directors take xiyouji plots as also their own way to show the heavens in their own way to convey satire#or humor as well depending on what their direction is aiming for#Some even go so far to make that heaven is just straight up the bad guy and that includes buddha as well which is a FAR more wild take than#just having romance in the heavens#But xiyouji does have it that we see these mythological figures have flaws#that heaven can lie or trick or they can take bribes and its up to the audience to interpretation as either satire or if it is critiquing#perhaps religion itself or rather the religious institutions since we do see both daoist and buddist monks as antagonists in the book#this as nothing to do with the ask at this point but i just wanna say my thoughts

— title : i need you
— word count : 2.1k words
— pairing : ryuji goda x reader
— summary : convincing ryuji of doing the opposite of what he’s set out to do is a pointless task, yet you will attempt if it gives him even one more day.
— warnings : blood, mentions of violence, some swearing, mentions of imagining of death, angst
notes : inspired by a prompt from here .. i had to do a self indulgent thingy for tumblr .. because why did they have to kill him off like that .. i tried to be dramatic as i possibly could
" none of this would've happened if you had just listened! "
A muffled silence drowns your hearing, the spinning of the Earth decelerates until it feels little more than a crawl with a weak grip. Rough cement scrapes the smoothness of your knee, leaving an angry blemish as grit fights to find its way into your bleeding wounds. No graze can pull you out of the deep end your heart finds itself fighting to stay above of, as you witness your worst fear painted perfectly on a canvas steeped in blood. The stillness of the air leaves you feeling flustered as your mind tries to make sense of what it observes before it, hoping that it’s no more than a deceptive trick played on itself by the fear you felt as you made your way up the tall structure.
A romantic thread of words have never failed in supply, but words left unsaid threaten to crush you under their weight, lost moments to time. A shudder of a breath shakily is let out, the cold air kick starts your body as you push yourself up and scramble to where the battered and bloodied body of Ryuji lays, almost motionless in pain. A childish cry to wake up from this nightmare is all you can think of, but reality does not bend to the whims of humanity, it continues with the path it has set. Resentfully, you can see the similarity that it shares with the male.
“ none of this would've happened if you had just listened! “ A broken cry full of fiery misery lick at the delicate snowflakes that descend from the heavens with a short lived grace, full of threats to burn as they penetrate your space.
The shock of the vibrancy of the liquid that escapes Ryuji leaves time standing still, you care not however, your fingertips gripping a heavy shoulder as the other lends a gentle touch to his cheek. Pain and grief masks itself as anger. You sorely wish to blame someone or something, but you had warned him.. You’d tried to reason with him that this course he’d set would leave him chasing an unattainable taste of sweetness of satisfaction that would dull with each day that dawns. A strong will that had left you in an addictive awe leaves you with a decaying taste in your mouth now, it creates an impossible amount of scars on your soul.
“ ‘Guess I should’a listened to ‘ya after all. “ He reluctantly answers, the humour unable to battle the drain out of his voice completely.
“ Why couldn’t you have just let this lie? “ A ticking pulls your attention away for a fraction of a passing second, a groan causes you to turn back.
“ Was always gonna end this way. “
A weakened grip that belongs to Ryuji ignores the resistance from his body, enduring the pain from the movement in order to experience skin against skin contact for himself once more. He wishes he could have found it within himself to have turned left, but he’d have lost himself without this self imposed purpose, fading into the background. It was selfish, to bring you into his world.. But to him? You’re an unfinished book, your words inked with glittering star dust that etch themselves into existence. He was unable to tear him away from your pages that you may have worn like wings. Selfish. To know how his story would end, yet knowing he would not be around for yours.
“ No. “ Your lips close, pushing against each other to numb the other, your features twisting into an aching grimace.
“ Can’t stop it now. “ he insists, brows drawing together as he scrunches his eyes up from the agony that throbs through every inch of flesh. “ Shit’s set in stone now. “
“ Stop it! “ You sob, hating how vulnerable you sound.
There is a sorrowful beauty in the scene, notes Ryuji. Pale beams of moonlight triumphant until the point of reaching your body that blocks it. Leaving no more than a radiant glow surrounding your head, providing an inhuman glow that illuminates your body as much as your soul — a wistful image that he’s glad to witness once more. Your being here is something of a majestic collision into a door to his person he’d fought to keep locked, if this is a departing gift he would gladly take it. He’d thought the last time he saw you would be when he unwillingly shared his plan, should this ending occur, he could take comfort in there not being a picture of you waiting at the door waiting for the other half of you to walk through the door, only to be met with a crushing realisation of never seeing him again. Only, he’d not expected you to follow in his tracks, not after he’s ignored your pleas of turning away from this path.
“ Ya better get outta here, ‘place is gonna blow soon. “
“ Not without you. “ you argue, refusing his direction — your grip strengthens ever so slightly, fearing the winter breeze has the power to boldly grow and tear you away from the man.
“ Ya got’a whole life ahead of ya. “ A twist of his heart is the dominant sensation he notices at the thought.
He wishes he could be there for it, to see the petals of your success bloom in the depths of your determination. One thing he could never understand was how, despite the tainted reputation that follows him like a shadow, never had been enough to put you off. Not a criminal tie to your name and you voluntarily merged your time and energy with his, with little care. Perhaps that’s where an addiction to his selfishness began. All his life and his Yakuza connections secluded him from genuine human connections and you’d trampled all over that with your impartial view. Many would prefer to cower in their fear, you’d scratched past the surface to see who he could be capable of being.
All the time spent together, and yet he still craves more. To linger in your orbit, time is his nemesis — for he still feels as if there has not been enough. Not the hours spent with the sun setting and you’re there by his side, when he’d spent more time committing the wonder at such a simple thing to his memory. Not the darkened hours spent together surrounded by silken sheets, and all that graced his ears was a musical symphony of breathy moans as you set about learning each other’s bodies. Never were the hours spent talking in order to hear the passion in your voice when speaking about something that interests you enough for him.
“ You can’t do this. “ You whimper softly, almost looking through the man you hold close. “ You can’t come into someone’s life, you can’t make them care about you and leave just because you want to. What did you think was going to happen? That I was going to sit by and let you do this? “
He says nothing, leaving space for a groan of pain to leave his lips as he tips his head back. He’s met with a darkened blanket where millions of stars are scattered so ungracefully, yet do not collide an uncoordinated dance across the sky. Uncertainty overwhelms him, over that is causing more pain — the wounds or the grief in your every word.
“ Just get the fuck outta here already. “ His voice echoes across the large space as he turns his attention back to you.
“ Were you lying all that time? “ You ask with a trembling lip at the thought of being without.
It feels like an endless amount of early mornings had been spent planning and chattering about the most random things. Your mind lighting up with the power of a thousand suns before the world had awoken around you. You can’t pinpoint the moment it happened, but the two of you awoke a little earlier than necessary to bathe in the image of the other — to forge a most perfect illusion of normalcy before stepping out into the real world. Mornings were not your most happiest bedfellow, yet you’d grown to love them just a little more when waking to the most simplest treat to sweeten your tongue.
“ What ya on about? “
“ All that time when we were talking, about what we were going to do? What we could do? ”
“ Why ya going on about that ? “ He asks curiously, eyeing you as you speak.
“ If you die, how are we meant to do any of it? “ Your words are rushed as you question him plainly.
“ Yer gonna .. just won’t be with me. “ Colour from the world feels as if it’s fading, merging into one bland monochrome depiction of a bright, bubbling city.
“ Can you stop?! “ A frustrated shriek tears from the bottom of your throat in response. “ I’m done talking in circles, I’m not dying here and neither are you. If I have to, I will drag you out with me. “
The world pauses in shock for a quiet fraction of a minute. To be spoken to in such a manner is not something Ryuji has experienced much in his life, even rarer by you — words that fell from your lips are always bathed in the sweetness of sugar, not an ounce of poison to anyone. Even the individuals who drew your temper out of its sleep were met with an incredible amount of restraint, he can hear the desperation — acting as a bucket of ice water to shock his nerve endings from the low temperature.
“ You did what you had to do. It wasn’t meant to be, but you can find another purpose. Build something else with your life, just.. Just come with me. Please. “
To be responsible for dragging you down with him, away from providing the world with your bright rays of sunshine in the bland day to day lives of everyone you came into contact with weighs heavily on his chest. Extra time spent with you, perhaps getting to know who his little sister has become are the treats tied onto a stick in front of him, life’s cruel bribe. He’d imagined how his ending would have been sketched by above, yet to have ties keeping him there had not been what he would have included. If he couldn’t be the one dragon, this would be a consolation prize that would allow for the petals of peace to bloom before he’d tear them down once more.
A strength he’d thought abandoned him glows with a dull hue, for a minute, he contemplates using that for Kiryu. Yet the other half of his soul wins the battle, a hand of his reaches out to push himself off from the concrete. It’s not an easy feat after being battered more than once, yet it’s not half as arduous as it could be with you supporting his weight — he’s fully aware how much of your strength he is using from your audible gasps of air.
“ Ya don’t gotta yell at me. “ he complains softly as he grips his side with as much force as he can dedicate to.
“ I don’t think it’s the time for this. “ You argue back quickly.
“ The red one. “
“ Huh? “ The sound escapes you as your features turn into a frown over how to get away from the ticking time bomb fast enough.
“ The lift, to get down. Press th’red one. “ He instructs you with a finger barely lifted, pointing in the direction of the button behind you.
You say nothing in response, the wheels in your mind working faster than your body as it moves purely on an instinctive reaction when receiving messages from your brain. Your stomach twists and turns from the descent to below, unable to process the way the city shifts into a state of obscurity from the swift movement. It would be a beautiful sight if it hadn’t attached a violent night as a parting gift.
“ You really scared me up there. “ You confess with barely a whisper. “ Can you promise me something? “
“ What’s that? “
“ That you won’t do something like this again. “ You say, with your heart hoping that he’d shy away from an impossible task should it present itself. Your eyes had seen enough hurt for one night, you’re confident you’d not be able to withstand it once more.
“ Wish I could. “
Teeth grind against the bottom of your lip, you should have known that he wouldn’t. Yet you also cannot find the strength to tear yourself away from the fire that burns within him, like a moth to a flame, you find yourself wondering how close you can stand against the heat before you flee from the pain it brings.

recap of last week’s session of the crusades campaign!
We now have a choice to make.  Get the fuck out of dodge while the opportunity presents itself or stay back and help Re'xama.  Given that she could have important information for us,  we all begrudgingly decide to continue battling Nephraxii.  Luckily,  we all come out on top,  but since we don't have her phylactery to destroy,  we have to quickly find a way to trap her soul before it can access it and start regenerating her.  So Elathera,  despite her overwhelming greed,  finally caves and spends a lot of money to bind Nephraxii to a very expensive book.  Now this book details every single moment of the lich's life which is horrifying,  but also good for us.  She thumbs through and gets to learn horrifying details of xill pregnancies and births,  but eventually gets to the chapter's most useful to us,  which is the Goth Phase.  Nephraxii also thought there was a war between the ethereal,  material,  and shadow plane unfolding;  but looking through the lich journal I acquired awhile ago,  we can all rest easy knowing she wasn't anybody important and thus,  the things she makes account of probably aren't actually going to happen.
But Elathera accepts Nephraxii's memories as truth.  Because obviously these expensive books are like the fantasy internet in which nobody can ever lie or sell themselves up as somebody more important than they are.  Since Re'xama proves to be absolutely useless to us,  Elathera manages to trick her out of 5000 gold by offering to make her a plane of existence.  But once she forks over the coin and goes to assemble her people to bring them to their new home,  we all bounce back to Elathera's plane to go over how exactly we're going to find and take on this night hag that seemed to be hunting Nephraxii down.  Industria wanted to take the living house with us,  but sadly,  with him still tied up with the hag,  we can't afford that kind of risk.  So he asks for a parting gift in the form of fish.  With fish acquired,  Hal the House bids us farewell and thanks for all the fish.
Back on the plane,  I stalk off to go have some alone time to talk to Iolond cuz it's been awhile.  Surprisingly,  it responds to me reaching out with a "hey,  what's up,  buddy" and appears before me.  No charming smile this time as it watches me curiously and waits for the oncoming game of twenty questions. I ask if it was trying to start something between Bibiana and the other gods by revealing its daughter,  though I preface it and say that it was probably just trying to save her.  It smiles affirmatively and holds a finger to its mouth,  which says everything.  I ask how it is all the gods didn't know about Lochoria,  but Tacitus of all people did.  It says to me that Tacitus is an angel of knowledge and knower of all things and a record keeper,  and when I try to pry into why Tacitus is so hush-hush about this situation,  Iolond simply tells me to go on and ask him about that myself.
I ask what it's looking for out of all of this and it proceeds to blow my mind by conjuring up the image of a train going down the tracks before the tracks split and it takes a sharp turn.  But here's the problem,  kids.  I don't understand the metaphor here because I don't know what the fuck a train is.  I'm clearly baffled,  but Iolond only laughs when I ask what that is,  and then disappears.  After a few minutes of me staring hopelessly into the abyss,  it returns,  and grants me the vision of being on said train and I start to understand it's a religious mode of transport,  obviously.
Come morning,  I ask Industria about it because she knows a lot about religion,  which means she's also aware they aren't religiously affiliated at all and has to explain that to me.  While she is the religion expert given her background and the fact that she's literally becoming a deity (though we don't realize it yet),  I still don't trust this because why would a god show me that??  I decided to ask Jurnet since he's literally an angel,  but he gets hung up on the fact that Iolond talked to me,  but has never once talked to him.  He's talked to literally every other god so far except it and now he's really upset.  We decide to postpone our hunt for the night hag to bounce up to Heaven and get some stuff done.  Elathera goes to pay Big Tenin a visit,  where she gifts him something we found on our trip through the desert,  and he gifts her back a hug and a heavenly medicine ball.
His meeting with Tenin awhile back was apparently because Little Tenin was still dealing with an existential crisis and they all thought it would be a good idea if Big T went down to pay the little guy a visit to show him that he was his own man and there was nothing to worry about.  Elathera,  still taking everything Nephraxii's memories allegedly believed to heart,  tells Tenin of the supposedly unfolding war between three planes and asks if it's cool if she summons him should we encounter the impossible.  He's cool with that seeing as how he's been summoned before and plus,  he loves a good fight.  Industria goes to visit her pappy,  who I'm also visiting to interrogate after she leaves.  She asks for a seed from the tree of life and knowledge for her mysterious side project we still don't know about and Tacitus hands it over,  but urges her to not tell Sabella he forked it over that easily as their were big plans for finding it.  Industria then goes to ask Elathera about making a gate on her plane so Industria can craft her own plane for her side project;  leaving me and Tacitus alone.
Tacitus mistakenly thought I asked to speak to him in private because I was looking to have a juicy affair,  so he tries to quickly tell me how that's inappropriate and how he isn't into mortals like that anymore (lies).  I feel like I've been sucker-punched by this because all I was here for was to discuss Iolond and things get even more awkward when Tacitus thinks I'm offended by this and nearly admits that he doesn't doubt my skills in the bedroom.  Seeing as how this is my friend's father,  I'm willing to quickly forget about that and move on from the awkwardness before it executes us both in this moment and get things back on course.  I tell him about how I've been communicating with Iolond because of the mask and how it said I should speak to him about the whole issue of Lochoria's existence being hidden from literally everyone.
Tacitus says he's in charge of certain things and recording it all and because of his job,  sometimes he has to keep things from Sabella and the other gods.  He knew because he had to know and he says it in a really complicated way because it's a really complicated matter.  He didn't intentionally hide anything,  so I ask if he was bribed,  but he says not quite.  It's not by Iolond,  but his silence implies it was Bibiana who threatened him in order to keep it a secret.  So once again,  everybody's vague answers to things says all I need to know and before we leave,  I borrow some books on Iolond from him,  and with that;  we all head back to Elathera's plane to figure out what to do about this hag.

Today’s reading from the ancient books of Proverbs and Psalms
for Tuesday, April 6 of 2021 with Proverbs 6 and Psalm 6, accompanied by Psalm 18 for the 18th day of Spring and Psalm 96 for day 96 of the year
[Proverbs 6]
My son, if you will risk your family’s future to put up collateral for the debts of an acquaintance,
if you seal a commitment with a handshake to someone without first knowing the value of his word,
Then your words may well be the trap that snares you,
and your promise may seal your fate.
You can’t be sure to whom you hitched your future.
So, my son—save yourself! Here’s what you need to do:
go to that person who became your master with a handshake,
humble yourself, and plead your case.
Do not sleep;
don’t even rest your eyes until you deal with this.
Get out as quickly as possible,
as a gazelle runs from the hand of the hunter,
as a bird takes off from the grip of the fowler.
Take a lesson from the ant, you who love leisure and ease.
Observe how it works, and dare to be just as wise.
It has no boss,
no one laying down the law or telling it what to do,
Yet it gathers its food through summer
and takes what it needs from the harvest.
How long do you plan to lounge your life away, you lazy fool?
Will you ever get out of bed?
You say, “A little sleep, a little rest,
a few more minutes, a nice little nap.”
But soon poverty will be on top of you like a robber;
need will assault you like a well-armed warrior.
Someone who struts around taking advantage of unsuspecting souls
and deceiving others is to be avoided.
With a wink of his eye, a quick shuffle of his feet,
and a slight gesture with his hand, he signals his roguish treachery.
With a warped mind and twisted heart, he constantly looks for his own gain at others’ expense,
causing friction everywhere he goes.
But you watch: his actions will bring sudden disaster!
In an instant, his life will be shattered,
and there will be nothing to save him.
Take note, there are six things the Eternal hates;
no, make it seven He abhors:
Eyes that look down on others, a tongue that can’t be trusted,
hands that shed innocent blood,
A heart that conceives evil plans,
feet that sprint toward evil,
A false witness who breathes out lies,
and anyone who stirs up trouble among the faithful.
So, my son, follow your father’s direction,
and don’t forget what your mother taught you—
Keep their teachings close to your heart;
engrave them on a pendant, and hang it around your neck.
Their instruction will guide you along your journey,
guard you when you sleep,
and address you when you wake in the morning.
For their direction is a lamp; their instruction will light your path,
and their discipline will correct your missteps,
sending you down the right path of life.
They will keep you far from the corrupted woman,
away from the smooth talk of a seductive woman.
Do not lose yourself in desire for her beauty
or let her win you over with her painted eyes,
For you can buy a harlot with a loaf of bread,
but sex with another man’s wife will cost you your life.
Can you carry fire right next to your body
and keep your clothes from burning?
Can you walk over fiery coals
and keep your feet from blistering?
Take another man’s wife, and you will find out—
whoever touches her will be found guilty.
People don’t despise a thief
who only steals to fill his hunger;
Still if they catch him, he must repay seven times over—
he could end up losing everything he owns!
By contrast only a fool would commit adultery
since by his action he loses not only his possessions but also his own life.
He will suffer injury and be disgraced;
dishonor will leave a permanent mark on his life.
For jealousy sparks a husband’s rage—
when he gets his revenge, he’ll show no mercy.
He will not be paid off or appeased;
no bribe or gift will set things right.
The Book of Proverbs, Chapter 6 (The Voice)
[Psalm 6]
For the worship leader. A song of David accompanied by the lyre.
O Eternal One, don’t punish me in Your anger
or harshly correct me.
Show me grace, Eternal God. I am completely undone.
Bring me back together, Eternal One. Mend my shattered bones.
My soul is drowning in darkness.
How long can You, the Eternal, let things go on like this?
Come back, Eternal One, and lead me to Your saving light.
Rescue me because I know You are truly compassionate.
I’m alive for a reason—I can’t worship You if I’m dead.
If I’m six feet under, how can I thank You?
I’m exhausted. I cannot even speak, my voice fading as sighs.
Every day ends in the same place—lying in bed, covered in tears,
my pillow wet with sorrow.
My eyes burn, devoured with grief;
they grow weak as I constantly watch for my enemies.
All who are evil, stay away from me
because the Eternal hears my voice, listens as I cry.
The Eternal God hears my simple prayers;
He receives my request.
All who seek to destroy me will be humiliated;
they will turn away and suddenly crumble in shame.
The Book of Psalms, Poem 6 (The Voice)
[Psalm 18]
I love you, God—
you make me strong.
God is bedrock under my feet,
the castle in which I live,
my rescuing knight.
My God—the high crag
where I run for dear life,
hiding behind the boulders,
safe in the granite hideout.
I sing to God, the Praise-Lofty,
and find myself safe and saved.
The hangman’s noose was tight at my throat;
devil waters rushed over me.
Hell’s ropes cinched me tight;
death traps barred every exit.
A hostile world! I call to God,
I cry to God to help me.
From his palace he hears my call;
my cry brings me right into his presence—
a private audience!
Earth wobbles and lurches;
huge mountains shake like leaves,
Quake like aspen leaves
because of his rage.
His nostrils flare, bellowing smoke;
his mouth spits fire.
Tongues of fire dart in and out;
he lowers the sky.
He steps down;
under his feet an abyss opens up.
He’s riding a winged creature,
swift on wind-wings.
Now he’s wrapped himself
in a trenchcoat of black-cloud darkness.
But his cloud-brightness bursts through,
spraying hailstones and fireballs.
Then God thundered out of heaven;
the High God gave a great shout,
spraying hailstones and fireballs.
God shoots his arrows—pandemonium!
He hurls his lightnings—a rout!
The secret sources of ocean are exposed,
the hidden depths of earth lie uncovered
The moment you roar in protest,
let loose your hurricane anger.
But me he caught—reached all the way
from sky to sea; he pulled me out
Of that ocean of hate, that enemy chaos,
the void in which I was drowning.
They hit me when I was down,
but God stuck by me.
He stood me up on a wide-open field;
I stood there saved—surprised to be loved!
God made my life complete
when I placed all the pieces before him.
When I got my act together,
he gave me a fresh start.
Now I’m alert to God’s ways;
I don’t take God for granted.
Every day I review the ways he works;
I try not to miss a trick.
I feel put back together,
and I’m watching my step.
God rewrote the text of my life
when I opened the book of my heart to his eyes.
The good people taste your goodness,
The whole people taste your health,
The true people taste your truth,
The bad ones can’t figure you out.
You take the side of the down-and-out,
But the stuck-up you take down a notch.
Suddenly, God, you floodlight my life;
I’m blazing with glory, God’s glory!
I smash the bands of marauders,
I vault the highest fences.
What a God! His road
stretches straight and smooth.
Every God-direction is road-tested.
Everyone who runs toward him
Makes it.
Is there any god like God?
Are we not at bedrock?
Is not this the God who armed me,
then aimed me in the right direction?
Now I run like a deer;
I’m king of the mountain.
He shows me how to fight;
I can bend a bronze bow!
You protect me with salvation-armor;
you hold me up with a firm hand,
caress me with your gentle ways.
You cleared the ground under me
so my footing was firm.
When I chased my enemies I caught them;
I didn’t let go till they were dead men.
I nailed them; they were down for good;
then I walked all over them.
You armed me well for this fight,
you smashed the upstarts.
You made my enemies turn tail,
and I wiped out the haters.
They cried “uncle”
but Uncle didn’t come;
They yelled for God
and got no for an answer.
I ground them to dust; they gusted in the wind.
I threw them out, like garbage in the gutter.
You rescued me from a squabbling people;
you made me a leader of nations.
People I’d never heard of served me;
the moment they got wind of me they listened.
The foreign devils gave up; they came
on their bellies, crawling from their hideouts.
Live, God! Blessings from my Rock,
my free and freeing God, towering!
This God set things right for me
and shut up the people who talked back.
He rescued me from enemy anger,
he pulled me from the grip of upstarts,
He saved me from the bullies.
That’s why I’m thanking you, God,
all over the world.
That’s why I’m singing songs
that rhyme your name.
God’s king takes the trophy;
God’s chosen is beloved.
I mean David and all his children—
always.

Today’s reading from the ancient books of Proverbs and Psalms
for Wednesday, february 17 of 2021 with Proverbs 17 and Psalm 17, accompanied by Psalm 59 for the 59th day of Winter and Psalm 48 for day 48 of the year
[Psalm 17]
Listen while I build my case, God,
the most honest prayer you’ll ever hear.
Show the world I’m innocent—
in your heart you know I am.
Go ahead, examine me from inside out,
surprise me in the middle of the night—
You’ll find I’m just what I say I am.
My words don’t run loose.
I’m not trying to get my way
in the world’s way.
I’m trying to get your way,
your Word’s way.
I’m staying on your trail;
I’m putting one foot
In front of the other.
I’m not giving up.
I call to you, God, because I’m sure of an answer.
So—answer! bend your ear! listen sharp!
Paint grace-graffiti on the fences;
take in your frightened children who
Are running from the neighborhood bullies
straight to you.
Keep your eye on me;
hide me under your cool wing feathers
From the wicked who are out to get me,
from mortal enemies closing in.
Their hearts are hard as nails,
their mouths blast hot air.
They are after me, nipping my heels,
determined to bring me down,
Lions ready to rip me apart,
young lions poised to pounce.
Up, God: beard them! break them!
By your sword, free me from their clutches;
Barehanded, God, break these mortals,
these flat-earth people who can’t think beyond today.
I’d like to see their bellies
swollen with famine food,
The weeds they’ve sown
harvested and baked into famine bread,
With second helpings for their children
and crusts for their babies to chew on.
And me? I plan on looking
you full in the face. When I get up,
I’ll see your full stature
and live heaven on earth.
The Book of Psalms, Poem 17 (The Message)
[Psalm 59]
My God! Rescue me from my enemies,
defend me from these mutineers.
Rescue me from their dirty tricks,
save me from their hit men.
Desperadoes have ganged up on me,
they’re hiding in ambush for me.
I did nothing to deserve this, God,
crossed no one, wronged no one.
All the same, they’re after me,
determined to get me.
Wake up and see for yourself! You’re God,
God-of-Angel-Armies, Israel’s God!
Get on the job and take care of these pagans,
don’t be soft on these hard cases.
They return when the sun goes down,
They howl like coyotes, ringing the city.
Then suddenly they’re all at the gate,
Snarling invective, drawn daggers in their teeth.
They think they’ll never get caught.
But you, God, break out laughing;
you treat the godless nations like jokes.
Strong God, I’m watching you do it,
I can always count on you.
God in dependable love shows up on time,
shows me my enemies in ruin.
Don’t make quick work of them, God,
lest my people forget.
Bring them down in slow motion,
take them apart piece by piece.
Let all their mean-mouthed arrogance
catch up with them,
Catch them out and bring them down
—every muttered curse
—every barefaced lie.
Finish them off in fine style!
Finish them off for good!
Then all the world will see
that God rules well in Jacob,
everywhere that God’s in charge.
They return when the sun goes down,
They howl like coyotes, ringing the city.
They scavenge for bones,
And bite the hand that feeds them.
And me? I’m singing your prowess,
shouting at dawn your largesse,
For you’ve been a safe place for me,
a good place to hide.
Strong God, I’m watching you do it,
I can always count on you—
God, my dependable love.
The Book of Psalms, Poem 59 (The Message)
[Psalm 48]
A song of the sons of Korah.
The Eternal is great and mighty, worthy of great praise
in the city of our True God, upon His holy mountain.
Situated high above, Mount Zion is beautiful to see,
the pleasure of the entire earth.
Mount Zion, in the north,
is the city of the great King.
In her palaces, the True God
has revealed Himself as a mighty fortress.
Not long ago, enemy kings gathered together
and moved forward as one to attack the city.
When they saw Mount Zion, they were amazed;
amazement became fear, then panic. They fled for their lives.
They were overtaken by terror, trembling in anguish
like a woman in childbirth.
God, You shattered the ships of Tarshish
with the mighty east wind.
As we have heard stories of Your greatness,
now we have also seen it with our own eyes
right here, in the city of the Eternal, the Commander of heavenly armies.
Right here, in our God’s city,
the True God will preserve her forever.
[pause]
We have meditated upon Your loyal love, O God,
within Your holy temple.
Just as Your name reaches to the ends of the earth, O God,
so Your praise flows there too;
Your right hand holds justice.
So because of Your judgments,
may Mount Zion be delighted!
May the villages of Judah celebrate!
Explore Zion; make an accounting,
note all her towers;
Reflect upon her defenses;
stroll through her palaces
So that you can tell the coming generation all about her.
For so is God,
our True God, forever and ever;
He will be our guide till the end.
The Book of Psalms, Poem 48 (The Voice)
along with these closing lines of Psalm 48:
Then you can tell the next generation
detail by detail the story of God,
Our God forever,
who guides us till the end of time.
(The Message)
Yes, this is our God, our great God forever.
He will lead us onward until the end,
through all time, beyond death,
and into eternity!
(The Passion Translation)
[Proverbs 17]
Wisdom’s Virtues
A simple, humble life with peace and quiet
is far better than an opulent lifestyle with nothing
but quarrels and strife at home.
A wise, intelligent servant will be honored above a shameful son.
He’ll even end up having a portion left to him in his master’s will.
In the same way that gold and silver are refined by fire,
the Lord purifies your heart by the tests and trials of life.
Those eager to embrace evil listen to slander,
for a liar loves to listen to lies.
Mock the poor, will you?
You insult your Creator every time you do!
If you make fun of others’ misfortune,
you’d better watch out—your punishment is on its way.
Grandparents have the crowning glory of life:
grandchildren!
And it’s only proper for children to take pride in their parents.
It is not proper for a leader to lie and deceive,
and don’t expect excellent words to be spoken by a fool.
Wise instruction is like a costly gem.
It turns the impossible into success.
Love overlooks the mistakes of others,
but dwelling on the failures of others devastates friendships.
One word of correction breaks open a teachable heart,
but a fool can be corrected a hundred times
and still not know what hit him.
Rebellion thrives in an evil man,
so a messenger of vengeance will be sent to punish him.
It’s safer to meet a grizzly bear robbed of her cubs
than to confront a reckless fool.
The one who returns evil for good
can expect to be treated the same way for the rest of his life.
Don’t be one who is quick to quarrel,
for an argument is hard to stop,
and you never know how it will end,
so don’t even start down that road!
There is nothing God hates more
than condemning the one who is innocent
and acquitting the one who is guilty.
Why pay tuition to educate a fool?
For he has no intention of acquiring true wisdom.
A dear friend will love you no matter what,
and a family sticks together through all kinds of trouble.
It’s stupid to run up bills you’ll never be able to pay
or to cosign for the loan of your friend.
Save yourself the trouble and don’t do either one.
If you love to argue,
then you must be in love with sin.
For the one who loves to boast is only asking for trouble.
The one with a perverse heart never has anything good to say,
and the chronic liar tumbles into constant trouble.
Parents of a numskull will have many sorrows,
for there’s nothing about his lifestyle that will make them proud.
A joyful, cheerful heart brings healing to both body and soul.
But the one whose heart is crushed
struggles with sickness and depression.
When you take a secret bribe,
your actions reveal your true character,
for you pervert the ways of justice.
Even the face of a wise man shows his intelligence.
But the wandering eyes of a fool will look for wisdom everywhere
except right in front of his nose.
A father grieves over the foolishness of his child,
and bitter sorrow fills his mother.
It’s horrible to persecute a holy lover of God
or to strike an honorable man for his integrity!
Can you bridle your tongue when your heart is under pressure?
That’s how you show that you are wise.
An understanding heart keeps you cool, calm, and collected,
no matter what you’re facing.
When even a fool bites his tongue
he’s considered wise.
So shut your mouth when you are provoked—
it will make you look smart.

The Book of Psalms, Poem 59 (The Message)
[Psalm 48]
A Psalm of the Sons of Korah
God majestic,
praise abounds in our God-city!
His sacred mountain,
breathtaking in its heights—earth’s joy.
Zion Mountain looms in the North,
city of the world-King.
God in his citadel peaks
impregnable.
The kings got together,
they united and came.
They took one look and shook their heads,
they scattered and ran away.
They doubled up in pain
like a woman having a baby.
You smashed the ships of Tarshish
with a storm out of the East.
We heard about it, then we saw it
with our eyes—
In God’s city of Angel Armies,
in the city our God
Set on firm foundations,
firm forever.
We pondered your love-in-action, God,
waiting in your temple:
Your name, God, evokes a train
of Hallelujahs wherever
It is spoken, near and far;
your arms are heaped with goodness-in-action.
Be glad, Zion Mountain;
Dance, Judah’s daughters!
He does what he said he’d do!
Circle Zion, take her measure,
count her fortress peaks,
Gaze long at her sloping bulwark,
climb her citadel heights—
Then you can tell the next generation
detail by detail the story of God,
Our God forever,
who guides us till the end of time.
