it's interesting to see people getting into tlt because i do think you're either gonna get through gtn and go on to htn or you're not. and then once you get to htn you're either going to stop reading out of confusion or you're gonna trust that you eventually won't be confused.
but also it's funny to see people be like "tlt doesn't take itself seriously," after only having read gtn.
like, no. that's just gideon's narrative voice. gideon doesn't take things seriously and it's a coping mechanism for her. however, that only really becomes apparent after reading htn and ntn because the narration and tone of the story changes so much between each book.
muir, for better or worse, is just really committed to writing from the pov we're currently in.

Miranda Beach (Gideon's perspective)
"Alone in the balcony My two left feet on the mezzanine A tear in my chest when I least expect it Ignored so naturally Yet so unaware accidentally Right? That's alright, yeah
Oh, you're wasting all of my evening With eyes just like a television Oh, baby you make it look easy What's going on in her head?
Oh, no She's got me feeling undone And she knows it, yeah"
Hallelujah (Gideon's)
"There was a time you let me know What's really going on below But now you never show it to me, do you? And I remember when I moved in you And the holy dove was moving too And every breath we drew was Hallelujah"
Origin of Love (Gideon's)
"The last time I saw you we had just split in two You were looking at me, I was looking at you You had a way so familiar I could not recognize 'Cause you had blood on your face And I had blood in my eyes But I could swear by your expression That the pain down in your soul was the same As the one down in mine That's the pain That cuts a straight line down through the heart We call it love We wrapped our arms around each other Tried to shove ourselves back together We were making love, making love"
Shrike (Both tbh)
"I was housed by your warmth Thus transformed By you're grounded and giving And darkening scorn Remember me, love When I'm reborn As a shrike to your sharp And glorious thorn"
Nailed (Harrow's)
"He died for me He died for no one else He died for no one And he'd see and complain Oh the sweet and the sigh, to pain
And your heart is left out naked and exposed I wish that you had left more to the eye And I can't find the words to say I love you And why and why and why and why and why"

ianthe and Coronabeth are soooooo normal. it kills me that harrow genuinely just did not want to become a lyctor. She was SO unenthused. She would do anything to get 5% bonus credit on a test but not this. The toxic codependency is real as fuck. “GOD I miss Gideon’s narration” is the fandom mood!!! (For some nonzero portion of HTN/NTN, that may be all of it, and also may be only part of it, depending on whether Gideon IS gone-gone or not, which you don’t know). We ALL just wanna hear about biceps, broadswords, and broads. also. We can probably trust horrible godman. I bet he’s, like, cool and normal about people and events. Also unironically he’s one of my faves. At the time I finished GTN it was my greatest hope to have more Ianthe Activities and I will not specify to you whether that hope was fulfilled or not
Okay so I’ve kept this in my inbox specifically so I could reply once I know more (approx halfway through htn rn) and god!! Okay so.
Ianthe and Coronabeth. I wanna put them in a jar and shake them, I’ve seen spoilers that Coronabeth comes back at some point but not whether she and Ianthe get to be in the same room as each other. I guess I can see why Ianthe couldn’t take her as her cavalier (too toxically codependent to risk never seeing her again and living like that) but I stand by my point that now Ianthe has to exist in unholy fusion with Babs of all people
And okay like I don’t know things yet but I’m hearing the 2nd person/3rd person switches between current vs past events, and I’m hearing snippets of Gideon-like phrasing in the 2nd person narration and Harrow’s thoughts, and I’m very 👀👀👀 about it. I know lobotomy brain hemorrhage etc etc spoilers so I’m thinking Gideon is existing in her brainspace someway that’s imperceivable to Harrow. But I don’t know what exactly the past Harrow knew that made her do things the way she did. Gnawing on drywall about it tbh
And I love all of the “is this really how it happens?” in the flashbacks, no idea what’s actually going on with them (I thought it was just Harrow’s scrambled brain attempting to make sense of the events without Gideon but they seem too detailed and divergent for that at this point tbh!) but I love the slow horror of everything being different in confusing ways! When Palamedes and Camilla died I was like ohhhh, uh oh we’re in for something weird here!
And then poor Harrow is just so wretchedly alone in a way she’s never had to be and it highlights how much of a pillar Gideon was in her life! Her and Ianthe’s dynamic is everything to me though, absolute perfection. I didn’t know I needed more Ianthe after reading gtn but I’m delighted to get it.
And the soup scene was *chef’s kiss* incredible especially because Harrow at the time was so fucked up she was staring at a spoon trying to divine its purpose and then forgot the word for bone marrow. Mercymorn said “I can’t tell if you’re a once in a lifetime genius or a brain damaged imbecile” and I was grinning because, both! :D
And then God. Based on spoilers I’ve seen I think I haven’t really seen everything John’s got going on, but I’ve been struck the whole time I’ve been reading htn by the sheer charisma he has. He says all the right words, he gives all the right praise, he’s empathetic he’s kind he’s supportive—he has clearly spent the last 10000 years developing a level of diplomatic personable grace that works on damn near everybody. I saw a post about how another reader kept expecting it to be a facade that he would drop eventually and show himself as a manipulative villain, but that the truth is more banal and somehow worse because of it. Idk I don’t remember the rest because I didn’t have context at the time, but something about “how can you just sit there and eat peanuts after everything you’ve done?” And I’m really looking forward to seeing how that all comes together, I want to see what’s going on with this wretched little man.

idk where to even go in a conversation if somebody reads the serendipity gospels n feels like it has a “tenuous” connection to harrow the ninth tbh. like truly u can interpret art however you want but like clearly we had such different experiences reading those two stories that like. we’re not gonna have a productive conversation abt it lol.
anyway like to me. i think the thing is like. of course the locked tomb is not Based on homestuck (altho i know ppl do tend to claim that and also i think the idea of ‘based on’ vs ‘referential to’ is a pretty semantic distinction in this context) and i understand why leaning too heavily on this kind of undermines the original storytelling that occurs in TLT. i guess for me the point where i start at is the idea that a lot of fic writers at the time who were writing non-sgrub aus were playing in a space where they were interested in some of the ideas tossed out but never explored by homestuck way more than like. the actual text or themes of the comic itself. so when i say that i thinn TLT is reflective of that milleu i am speaking more abt ideas and themes: what it means to not fit into society, what it means to love somebody in a way that society can’t accept, what it means to be broken and unfixable
i don’t think the locked tomb is “about” homestuck but i do think it means something that homestuck was the last fandom tmuir was publicly writing for before gtn got picked up and i do think there are a lot of pieces of the ideas that the homestuck fandom space at large was interested in contained within the narrative of the locked tomb. and i don’t think talking about that stuff discredits TLT as an original work or means that everything about the story is derivative because i do think so much of what she was writing abt in fic at the time was wholly original and more just based on a vibe

for the choose violence ask game: 14, 18, and 24 for TLT!
Thank you so much!! I never get to go on about TLT here. 💖 From the ask game:
14. that one thing you see in fics all the time
John dubconning or nonconning other characters. I get why it makes sense and I’ve written it too, but tbh I think it’s pretty feasible that he’s not like that. If he grew up in the social context that’s implied, he could be very self-conscious about sexual consent, actually! I could see a John who doesn’t have much sex and only accepts offers from people who are very, very clearly coming onto him (e.g. jizz heist). But yeah, I feel like I mostly see John engaging in consent-issues sex in fic.
Oh, and Third House fancy parties in pre-GtN fic. I would love to see Third House do something other than throw a gala.
18. it's absolutely criminal that the fandom has been sleeping on…
OBVIOUSLY Silas/Colum. Yeah I get it, this is a majority f/f fandom, as it should be. But these two have such a sexy dynamic: loyalty/fealty, religious indoctrination, repression, a weird backward age gap (baby uncle!), they were literally bred for one another. It’s full of amazing potential to explore in a thousand different ways, and while I’d never expect it to be a top 10 ship, I think it’s a crime that its fans are so few. It seems like the popularity is hurt by the divisiveness of the Eighth house and perhaps that’s something that could be shifted by whatever happens in AtN.
I’ve got an idea for a setting-change AU fic which makes Silas and Colum the depraved Victorian family they were clearly meant to be and I’m going to try writing it next year. They’re just such a good ship and I hope that the fandom comes around on them. Also, Silas needs a fisting.
24. topic that brings up the most rancid discourse
Jod. 😬 I remember watching a wank go down last year about John and war crimes and it devolved into the sort of disgusting “liking a villain makes you morally suspect” comments that run me out of engaging with a fandom. I’m neutral to negative on John, despite wanting to have liked him more, but IMO he’s a very standard morally-complicated bad guy and not worth that kind of discourse. He did terrible things, we’re supposed to recognize that he’s not a cartoon and he had reasons for them, and the narrative handles that fine. But I’m going to hide from most mentions of John Gaius because wow, it gets bad.

More random thoughts on the creation of Harrow and other offspring in The Locked Tomb:
Harrow’s parents did “a type of resurrection” with thalgery, not thanergy, according to John’s understanding of Harrow’s explanation.
They needed the energy burst from killing the babies in order to manipulate the ovum to be sure Harrow was a necromancer.
Regardless of WHY Harrow had to be a necro, I find the implication that they could do this genetically to be very very suspect. It’s mentioned that necros simply don’t come from outside the Houses, and that it’s the thanergetic dirt that affects the necro ability somehow. If Judith’s parents knew how to do this the genetic way, don’t you think they would have?
It’s strongly implied in the GtN bonus material about names that the line of the Reverend family comes down through Harrow’s father’s mother. Assuming Harrow is XX (a massive massive assumption, tbh) then she inherited her father’s full and complete X chromosome, plus or minus some mutations. This chromosome could be any level of recombinant from Harrow’s paternal grandmother, so beyond that we can’t say how much comes from who, nor do we know anything about anyone above her anyway.
In fact, we can’t assume ANYTHING about ANYONE’s chromosomes here. (Except Ortus the Ninth, who is explicitly "a source of XY".) We know that Wake and Pelleamena each had a uterus and gave birth, and we know Mercy had eggs. This points to all three of them being XX and John being XY, but it’s been ten thousand years since "modern times" and irl, there is evidence (one single case in the literature) of an XY person (without the SRY gene) getting pregnant and carrying to term, so we have no clue!!!
I am also still on my bullshit about finding it deeply strange, in a series otherwise so built on body horror, that menstruation is never mentioned.

So I’ve counted the kids on the Ninth. If they had 200 kids bellow 18 (are we sure that they were bellow 18?), they had roughly 11 kids per year. That’s already really really bad. Let’s say that since the Ninth doesn’t have the resources to grow kids in tubes or whatever (I think that’s why it should have been Harrow? Because her mom carried her old-school and knew it’s her last chance?) they are pretty shitty in terms of reproductive medicine and stuff. So let’s say that people have kids from ages 19-40. That’s 230 something adults who can have children. So in those 18ish years they could have had roughly 200 more kids and some of them would be Harrow’s age.
But where are they? There are no people that could have been Harrow and Gideon’s peers because Gideon would have fucked them. So it seems that either there is a huge age gap between Harrow and the next child that was born OR there are no children whatsoever. And I think that it is the latter because of the way Gideon treats Jeanmarie and Isaac. She would probably love working with kids and protecting them, she’d definitely be in that line of work at least a little bit. And she is very sociable and naturally popular, Gideon would have had friends if she could. But nope.
I think maybe the real reason that the Ninth house is so desolate and closed to visitors is that people either ran from it or revolted because of the children massacre and were executed, but likely both.
YEAH, the situation was already pretty dire. Though we are told in GtN that many people who lived on the Ninth, historically, weren't born to the House, but moved there later in life because they decided they wanted to spend their days in pious contemplation of whatever. So I think it's actually possible that if the average generation of children counted 200 people, maybe the population aged 40 to 60 was 300+
Like, they'd still be a very tiny House, but a constant influx of people from other Houses would have guaranteed some level of genetic diversity.
Personally, I think that "the mass death of the children is a secret but also there aren't any children younger than Harrow" is a bit of a plot hole, because the two things IMO can't coexist—if there HAD been a mass exodus, other Houses would know the true situation of the Ninth and they would have made contact, and also I think Harrow would be way more worried about the future of the House before Lyctorhood is a possibility; if there was no mass exodus then there should be SOME children.
But tbh I don't think it matters that much to the overall plot, and for fic purposes I usually headcanon whichever works best tonally.

2,13,20 (book ask)
I got an ask, time to overshare -w-
If you make it to the end, you get a cookie (or you can cheat and scroll to the end!)
2. Top 5 books of all time:
Harrow is def no.1 by far for me, as much as I loved and devoured GtN in one sitting. Both of those books I've reread a million times and hold such a grip on me I can recite so many lines word for word, I can repeatedly open the books just to revisit scenes, I'm so invested in what will happen next in the series, and somehow they're even better on reread. There is always a portion of my mind now possessed by this series lol.
Ugh I'm bad at top 5 tho. I love the Murderbot series too but there's so many novellas in that series that if I include them TLT and Murderbot could take all the top 5 slots. It's sci fi action packed but also the narration is just such fun snark a bit like GtN.
In the same vein of the above books with their dark humor and banter I really enjoyed Nevernight. Probably also cuz the sidekick was a magical sarcastic cat made of shadows. And horny bi girl rep.
Also love When Women Were Warriors - it's my cheesy wholesome romance go to series. It's enemies to friends to lovers ish but soft.. except the swords.
Since the question says of all time, I will include that when I was a little weird kid I was obsessed with the Silverwing series and reread those a million times. Including and *especially* the very strange Firewing book that took place in bat hell lol. One of the main characters gets burned to death in the beginning! Great books for kids.
13. Do you have a goodreads?
Yeah, I've mostly been using that one lately. Trying to combine books/manga/webcomics in one site even tho goodreads isn't always great for shelving manga/webcomics.
If you wanna snoop and spend a second harshly scrutinizing me I think the link is:
goodreads.com/lluvia_otsana
Haven't been using it to keep track of books read per year as much until recently cuz I usually read physical books* and wasn't updating times before.
(*I live close to a gigantic indie bookstore I love to support. A dangerous place to live.)
20. What are things you look for in a book?
I like authors with a crazy imaginative mind. I wanna be thrown into a really different universe and experience the passion they put into the details of their beloved story. Bonus points for funny world building footnotes and appendices - I don't care that it detracts from the plot. I don't care if I don't know wtf is going on and I need to think and squint for foreshadowing and to understand the truth of what the characters are feeling - I like biting thru the layers of thick plot and characterization tbh. I love humor interwoven into the series and want to care about a diverse cast of characters. Not cuz it's forced in there but especially if it's SFF if you're gonna write an entirely different world why not put that care into writing different perspectives rather than the default usually cishet and male ones. I care more about the characters' motives and feelings and actions feeling real than them being morally correct. I don't need romance in it I can read diverse relationships, platonic or hateful or whatever (more fun if it's still intense in some way) But truthfully I am a sucker for deep monog romance if it fits somewhere in there.
Here 🍪 („• ᴗ •„)

the tridentarii and “posters of their face”
“Why do you keep [Cyrus and Valancy’s portraits] around?”
“It is the type of energy I wish to take into my future,” Ianthe had said. (htn ch. 29)
So I think there’s a lot to be said in itself for Ianthe’s obsession with these paintings, but it also parallels really well to Corona’s relationship and resemblance to Wake. We see Corona fawning over Gideon Nav’s features early on (”You’re a ginger!” in gtn ch. 22). Silas points out that Wake’s red hair was “Unusual... perhaps she was Third” in ch. 28. I think that’s a bit of foreshadowing for the point in HtN where it’s Silas who pushes Corona’s ‘ghost’ off the docks, like he’s blessing her new fate in opposition to the Ianthe and/or the Empire.
Coronabeth’s ‘ghost’ (ch. 37):
her riot of hair—half-caught in a fillet, half-escaping—was soaking wet, a dark and crinkling amber in the rain.
vs. The Sleeper’s corpse (ch. 49):
A bound-back mass of hair had been tucked into the collar, but some strands and wisps had escaped and plastered themselves in red whorls on the forehead and cheeks.
I made a separate post that goes into Corona’s ghost simulacrum a little ‘cause it’s my favorite symbolism right now but it’s just Neat how Coronabeth and Commander Wake are both described as charismatic, beautiful, have big fat beefs with necromancy, and are gung-ho on getting some really crazy revenge.
The last time we see Coronabeth (ch. 34) she has “burnished” hair, she’s kicked the door closed on the shuttle with Wake’s portrait watching over her. I love Coronabeth “worse twin” Tridentarius and I can’t wait to see her go absolutely FERAL at Ianthe’s expense (and, tbh, the expense of anyone who gets in the way of that vengeance) in atn

11. Favourite colour? Blue/purple
12. Things people do that drive you crazy? Nonchalantly breaking rules that have been clearly stated, especially if I have gone out of my way to follow them (ie. the arrows in grocery store aisles), or if it’s harmful to others (ie. smoking in non-smoking areas)

Dear Yuletide (2020) Writer
This is a filler post, please do not reblog!
General DNWs: explicit or graphic sexual content (implied or euphemistically written is fine), non-canon-compliant major character death.
General tropes I like: Found Family, First Times, Epistolary Fic, Slice of Life, Mutual Pining, Canon Exploration, Canon Divergence, Friends to Lovers, Enemies to Lovers, Mild Angst, Character Introspection
Request 1: NezhaRin, The Poppy War by R F Kuang
I think I mostly would like AU content for them, because canon-compliant would simply be a variation of H/C and I’m not into reading that (for these ship). I’d prefer AUs like Fairytale AU, ATLA AU, or Boarding School AU (the last one can be canon-compliant/divergent if the fic isn’t shippy! I disliked canon Nezha’s treatment of Rin in the Academy so idt I wanna necessarily read them being romantic in that context. Unless it’s a canon-divergent Nezha redemption :eyesemoji:) Tropes I’d like: First Kiss (or just physical touch in general?) and Rin and Nezha Use Their Words (in a way that doesn’t end in anger or betrayal or both CRIES AT RFK)
Including Kitay and Venka would make me VERY very happy, especially if they have scenes with all four of them. I am caught up with TDR (but not The Burning God) so I would be grateful if the fic is not spoilery.
A specific prompt for a specific fic I’d like for these two (but you don’t have to fill it, it is just in case): A fairytale AU where Nezha is a prince of the Dragon Kingdom, cursed by a fabled dragon (the curse can match canon’s) and Rin is a secret shaman and peasant who saves him. This is an Enemies to Friends or Enemies to Lovers fic prompt!
Request 2: Harryanthe, The Locked Tomb Trilogy by Tamsyn Muir
The Harryanthe (Harrowhark/Ianthe) tag is so empty, I would be grateful for anything tbh. And I say Harryanthe, but I would also GREATLY love Griddleharryanthe (Gideon/Harrow/Ianthe) like A LOT.
I don’t have any specific ideas for what I want to read but things I would definitely like to see: BANTER please snipy snarky bitch banter, Harrow and Ianthe having a genius-nerd-off, Gideon being lewd and flirty towards both Harrow and Ianthe, Gideon being tender with Harrow and a dick to Ianthe, Ianthe being a Huge Bitch but also simping for Harrow (and Gideon?)
Palamedes Sextus is my favourite character so please work him into the fic somehow, if you are able!! Even a snippet of him and Cam being there would be fine.
If you would like a specific prompt: I’d like GtN canon-divergent scene packs with either harryanthe or griddleharryanthe. OR the canon-compliant Ball AU in HtN with the three of them :0
Request 3: ManChung, Hotel Del Luna
I love ManChan couple but Lee Do Hyun as Chung Myung gave me second lead syndrome and I would love more exploration of ManChung. Canon-compliant is preferable, but it can be canon-divergent also. No H/C please! I would like to see happy ManChung, with a HEFTY helping of Mutual Pining and BANTER. Yeonwoo cameos would be greatly appreciated.
Request 4: Character Study, Extraordinary You
I would like to see character study fics for any or all of the following characters: Haru, Yeo Joo Da, and Eun Dan Oh. In order of priority!
For Haru and Yeo Joo Da, I’d specifically like to see a character study of right after or during when they gain their egos. For Haru, the first time he gains his ego as Number 13.
For Eun Dan Oh, I’d like to see a character study of her after Haru disappears for the second time (in the finale) and that one year in the Secret universe. It can start off sad but I’d like to see what the character would be feeling beyond just grief! (Because Dan Oh had kind of mellowed out and accepted her fate in the epilogue, right before she finds Haru’s journal. I wanna see how she got there)
If these are too specific, I’m also okay with a shippy or gen fic with the ships Joo Da/Do Hwa and DanHaru.
Request 5: Gen, It’s Okay to Not be Okay
How did publisher Lee Sang In meet and hire author Go Moon Young? Why did Moon Young agree to work with him? In the show, Sang In says he’s been working with her for a decade, so they would have met around when Moon Young is 18 or 19. And admittedly, Sang In is the closest person to Moon Young before the Moon brothers enter the picture. You can tell she trusts him, even if she treats him badly; he knows about her father, he takes care of her affairs. And Sang In is fond of Moon Young. How did they get to that point?
I’d like the fic to explore both the characters and their relationship. It doesn’t have to be super detailed, or cover both their POVs, but I’d like it if it showed how the two feel towards each other. Cameos from either of the Moon brothers would also be nice!
If this is too specific, a cute gen fic about Sang In reacting to Moon Young and Gang Tae getting married would be nice too.
