Okay, about ‘gamer bros’...
I feel kind of... How do I explain it...? Like I’ve finally undergone a communion to become a TRUE Soulsborne fan. xd
Basically, I kept complaining about how people make up 'gamer bros' to get mad at because I honestly haven’t seen any if at all, it felt more like a cop out for the community to not notice their own faults at the expense of some abstract ‘white males’ you know? I even joked how seems like everyone in Soulsborne fandom has an item that lets them see the ‘dudebros’ but I skipped a questline to get it and that’s why all this stuff dodges me xD
But recently for SOME reason Youtube started to recommend me videos about how much Elden Ring “sucks” (I disagree) and comments are FULL of comments complaining about some Souls things in general, like ‘wahh grinding boring levels to get a useless item with information no normal person cares about’ ‘wahh boring repetitive boss why they didn’t do better’ ‘wahhh no one cares about some random NPC’ ‘wahh stupid boring map’ and just... Multiple of other comments that bash the decisions in the games that, essentially, were well-crafted to tell the story and characterise the world and depict the characters better. But some people actually see the devs’ wish to not only entertain with the PLAY but also tell a compelling story as something bad, evil and not belonging in the gaming?
Tumblr media
(Beyond, of course, drooling for some female characters if they feel nice today)
My only introduction prior recent couple of months was second-hand because people were overthinking the implications of many gamers hating Malenia as a boss (that is not fair and gamer rage seems fair imo), and I still think it is understandable that people are so unhappy with the boss, but like... Currently I sensed just how WIDE is the rift between us (people who loredig, want to know more about characters, make theories and want to create headcanons) and them (people who cannot see past the gameplay point at all).
Now it feels like a necessary part of being in the fandom of Soulsborne games - to be hit in the face with the ‘not caring’. I mean I get this? Videogames are a fantastic way to tell the story by having you constantly engage to keep unravelling it, as opposed to spending hours on movies/series/books in passive manner? But there are many people that don’t, in fact, want some deep messages or complicated lore they should think about. Some people want more basic entertainment - violence, comedy, sexual appeal, cool sights, just activity in general, without all the complexity and big messages and that’s okay!
But Soulsborne games have layers - they do not pose themselves right off the bat as very complicated stories that can make philosophy professors of 30+ years of studying feel incompetent. They are positioned as videogames. For fun challenge. So they are saught for primary videogames experience - for beating challenging bosses and getting cool items useful in PvP in that, competition, fun jokes at the streams, all that. So I feel like this is the root of this sort of toxicity? When a movie is advertised as something that will make you think and feel - people in search for simple and basic fun just don’t buy tickets, they instead go see a movie that will make them laugh or give them a simple story about cool dude beating all bad guys with Style TM or starring “that super sexy actor :3″. But Soulsborne games are layered and in many cases it is hard to stay on one’s preferred layer. For example, if those gamers want to just play a game for violence+challenge aspect - they will, in fact, eventually find themselves having grinded hours for an item that gives nothing but lore - something they were not searching for. They thought if this place was so hard to access, then sure it’d give a reward that will let them kick other players’ asses in PvP, right? But nope! Lore. Some will appreciate the surprise and artistry, others will get angry.
So yeah, all in all, I think this sort of games is just fated to have ‘split’ fandom after all. There are many games that let the potential audience know right away that there will be some emotions and complex messages, so similar ‘gamer bros’ just turn around and go buy a different kind of game that just demands skill and stubbornness, without complexity, and is very clear and plain with challenge vs reward system. Being both ‘the challenge’ and the ‘super hard to decipher lore’ is a blessing AND a curse. In a way I am glad that Soulsborne games are so unusual, because for every 10 gamers that get frustrated and complain, there is at least one gamer that appreciated the lore craft and maybe even reconsidered how he* perceives the games- maybe even became a lore Youtuber.

After a Decade, UA Games Announces New Sequel to Popular Fantasy RPG Smash Hit, Hero Adventure: Symbol of Peace
By Maya Lurelin
June 15, 2015, 3:42 pm
Boku no Hero Adventure is the upcoming new installment to the popular fantasy RPG franchise, Hero Adventure. Known for its memorable characters, engaging mix of simulation and RPG combat, and an engaging fantasy world, Hero Adventure defined the early 90s as one of the most beloved RPG games. The story of All Might and Shimura Nana’s struggle against the villainous All for One inspired spin off light novels, 4-koma, and even one questionable live action movie.
However, after a decade, fans had begun to lose hope that UA release a sequel to continue All Might’s adventures. So imagine the collective shock at the UA panel’s presentation when those familiar chords of “You Say Run” began to swell. At the panel, UA debuted their a 30-second long teaser trailer, mainly showcasing nostalgic environments like the Ingenium Manor and the Pussycat Woods now rendered beautifully in 3d. The trailer ended with a stunning cut of the One for All blade emerging from molten lava and a white gloved hand grabbing its hilt. The title card revealed that the sequel is to be called Boku no Hero Adventure and UA Games is expecting a release date next year in June 2016.
Already fans are clamoring for more details, but at the moment, information seems to be sparse. Little is known about the content of the game or its characters. Many speculate that All Might will no longer be the protagonist, comparing the hand in the trailer to All Might’s, and the game will naturally follow the eighth wielder of the One For All blade. At the panel, lead developer Horikoshi Kohei said:
“It’s been a decade since the original Hero Adventure game was released and so we want to deliver something that will both satisfy fans of the original as well as bring in new fans to the series. In every way, Boku no Hero Adventure is meant to be the next step in the Hero Adventure legacy.”
Likely trailers and other promotional material will begin to be released as 2016 rolls around. So far, Boku no Hero Adventure has been confirmed for the PS4and PC.
Boku no Hero Adventure is set to be coming out Summer 2016 in Japan, English localization not yet confirmed.

BNHA in Famitsu scans, First Look at Midoriya Izuku, the 8 th wielder of One For All, and Exclusive Interview with Neda Hirofumi, Art Director
By Kevin Lee
December 22nd, 2015, 2:28 pm
This week, Famitsu released the first artworks of the protagonist for Boku no Hero Adventure, the highly anticipated sequel of Hero Adventure: Symbol of Peace, coming out June 2016. The issue confirms long held fan suspicions that the game does not feature All Might, the protagonist of HA: SoP, as its main character. Instead, fans can look forward to playing as Midoriya Izuku, the purported student and eight inheritor of the legendary blade, One for All. The game setting is said to take some twenty years after the original Hero Adventure.
(thank you to Tanaka-san for the scans!)
This magazine issue also included a rare interview with the game’s Art Director, Neda Hirofumi, who talks about the difficulties in moving designs from 2D into 3D. Here are some excerpts below:
Neda: When I was brought on to do the design work for Boku no Hero Adventure I was very nervous! I had actually played the original Hero Adventure when I was in college, on the PS1. So the series was very nostalgic for me. My friends all asked me when I got the job, isn’t it fun to design for the characters and environments you grew up drawing? But I ended up being the unhappiest when the design wasn’t working. *laughs*
Neda: You see, the original Hero Adventure was 2D and it was the era of beautiful sprite work. Your impression of the landscapes and those American comic book battle scenes were really strong. So we had a long debate of whether Boku no Hero Adventure should try to look like that. But Horikoshi-san [the lead developer] really wanted to push our boundaries and not just create something easy. But the effort to really translate the feelings in a 2D world into an original 3D world isn’t easy. *laughs*
Neda: Horikoshi-san knew from the start that we wanted to make a game that was the reverse of a sequel. That became a bit of a catchphrase around the office. How to make a sequel that wasn’t a sequel. And so I let those feelings express themselves in the art and that’s why in 3D, we went with a richer, more stylized design and a kind of visual charm, to really try and make our players go, “oh, this is the world I saved ten years ago, but it’s completely new and I want to explore it”.
Boku no Hero Adventure is set to be coming out July 2016 in Japan, US, and EU for the PS4, WiiU, and PC.

omg tell about meeting Esparza! :)
Buckle up anon for the essay you never asked for.
Okay SO I had always told myself that if I ever got to meet him or send him a letter, out of all the things I would like to say there was one thing that was the most important I convey to him, and I’m sure this will sound creepy but all in due time, it will be explained.
I don’t live in the US. I never have. I’m a whole ocean away in UK, which is my second adopted country at this point. I never thought I would EVER meet this man and it was perfectly okay because I’m not one to fangirl or get star struck, so even if I wrote him a letter with my important message that would be fine.
I went to New York in the Summer to celebrate finishing my MA degree and there I was sitting on my friend’s toilet scrolling through Twitter when Bryan Fuller tweeted out links to a surprise Hannibal panel happening THE NEXT DAY and of course, there were never going to be tickets left, but apparently it had been added in the ten minutes before his tweet so somehow homegirl got tickets for both panels.
I went.
I showed up two hours early and camped out near the toilets and made friends with all the staff, who kept letting me in and out whenever I needed to vape without having to queue.
When the doors opened I immediately sat front row centre before anyone else could but soon realised NO ONE ELSE was sitting front row and wow wasn’t that embarrassing.
So he showed up and I sat through the panel and it was consistently very awkward for me having to play Audience Anchor because when someone sits front row that’s usually where you look to for audience gauging. So that was Fun TM.
When the panel was over I knew where the back exit was because that’s where I had gone out vaping during every break so I wouldn’t disturb the people queueing. So I decided, you know what, I don’t live here, I can’t believe I was even this lucky since I was only in New York for TWO WEEKS and somehow this panel happened while I was there, and you know, fuck caution, I need to say this.
So he came out at the back and I called out his name and I speak Spanish so man full on turned on his heel because I’m pretty sure in my nervousness I legit called him señor. And instead of standing like at a regular distance man came straight up to my face to the point where I could feel the human warmth coming off his skin which is terrifying I mean how do you sleep at night in Summer he is a human radiator??
I told him, you know, I’m so sorry for disturbing your evening, I don’t even live in New York so I’m still dazed that I happened to be here when you did this panel. This small man just lights up and starts waving his hands around, says “I KNOW RIGHT” while telling me very enthusiastically that he was actually on holiday with his family when he heard the other panel had fallen through, so he messaged the festival organiser asking if they would have him, and the second it was confirmed he literally flew out to New York that same morning before the panel. I told him I’m not the autograph-and-selfie kind of person so “please don’t worry I’m not here to give the Fan Experience TM, and I don’t want to take time out of your evening because you’re probably going out for dinner, I just had something really important that I’d like you to know”. And he got really close and was staring straight into me and I was like well it’s now or never.
So I told him.
I told him I had spent an entire year so deep in depression that I had to put my studies on hold. That I didn’t shower or eat for days on end. That I would spend weeks without seeing the sun or talking to people. That I lived in this sort of suicidal limbo, alone in my house, with no one asking after me. That because of my depression I had stopped being able to enjoy things, anything at all. I hadn’t turned my TV on in over 6 months. I couldn’t watch TV or films (and I’m a huge cinema buff) I couldn’t even play videogames or read books. There was literally nothing I enjoyed anymore. I had lost everything. I was suicidal. I ended up in the ER (A&E) here in the UK so many times for trying to throw myself in front of buses, or passing out from a panic attack. I hurt myself consistently. I cut myself, I scratched myself, so on.
My mother likes having the TV on, she hates silence. One day she flew over to help me with the house and we decided to just put the TV on a random channel. Universal airs NCIS and she likes NCIS so that was my thought. And I was kneeling on the floor helping my mother unpack when I heard his voice on the TV and I turned and there was something about his voice and the way he spoke and carried himself that made me feel comfortable and at ease and safe but also in a way that I found myself hanging on his every word, enough to make me keep watching.
“So, you single-handedly got me back into watching TV.” I said “And then from there I managed to watch films, and read books, and play videogames, and shortly after that I was laughing and smiling.”
So at this point he’s just staring at me like he was hit by a truck and I’m trying very hard not to cry because it’s hard talking about this. So I smiled and I literally said.
“I just wanted to thank you for saving my life.”
And he suddenly gets very fidgety. He starts rubbing his face and then I notice he is genuinely crying and he keeps saying, over and over, in this endless loop.
“Oh my god. Thank you for telling me this. It means so much to be told that. Thank you so much for telling me. I can’t explain to you how much it means.”
And I’m just standing there in SHEER HORROR because I made Raúl Esparza cry which is even more evident because we are exactly the same height so I kept having to look at his face up very close at eye level and I could see him crying. So at this point I have no idea what to say (rare for me, I am a social butterfly) and he’s still stuck in that loop and suddenly he just stops talking and looks me dead in the face and goes.
“What’s your name?”
And I’m Portuguese so to excuse my weird-ass accented name and I said “Inês” with my full accent, which I never use because it’s a language specific way of saying it. But I thought, he’s Cuban-American I’m sure he’s come across similar.
He just smiles at me. He literally goes and grabs my hand in both of his and he’s still half-crying and smiling and shaking my hand and literally says
“Nice to meet you, Inês. I’m Raúl.”
And I couldn’t help myself and said “I think I have a vague idea of who you are.”
And he laughed a lot and I honestly could have had a longer conversation because he wasn’t trying to leave, but I told him, you know, I’ve taken so much of your time, I told you this really important thing so I will let you enjoy your evening. And we parted ways.
So yeah this is the story of how I made Raúl Esparza cry.
