Vacation Time Part 4: Telling Truths

“There’s no way!” J laughs, shaking his head. “That can’t be true!”

Celestial laughs, picking up her water glass. “It is! It was a mess and a total disaster but the kids loved it.” She takes a drink of water and sets the glass back down. “The parents on the other hand weren’t super thrilled about it.”

J leans back in the booth. “I’d expect not.”

“Oh and it was absolutely horrible to clean up to.” She takes a bite of her pie.

J picks up his water. “Did you manage to keep it from damaging the books?” He takes a sip.

Celestial waves her hand, swallowing. “Oh no, we held the event in a separate room. No books in there. Thank the stars. It would have been so much worse if we had to try and salvage damaged books too. That would have been a nightmare.”

“I can imagine.”

She props her chin up on one hand. “So what about you? Got any good stories you can share about your work?”

J chuckles and shakes his head. “I do but you wouldn’t believe any of them, trust me.”

Celestial sets her fork down and links her fingers together, resting her chin on them and leaning towards him a bit more. “Try me.”

J looks at her for a moment, his grin frozen on his face. There’s no way she’d believe him and it’s against policy to discuss MIB with civilians. But… there’s something about this girl, about this Celestial Stargate. He feels the need to tell her the truth. The need to need to tell her everything is so strong it’s almost a physical sensation. He thinks back to the Cupid in the park. He’ll have to pay him a visit. And he does have the Neurolizer with him. If she doesn’t believe him or thinks he lying he could always use it. Even if she did believe him he could use it anyways. That thought doesn’t sit well with him but it helps him make up his mind. He sighs and rubs his forehead. “Alright.” He sits straighter, and puts his forearms on the table, leaning towards her a bit. “I doubt you’ll believe me but I’ll tell you.”

She smiles at him, setting her clasped hands on the table. “I’m all ears.”

“Okay. So, this was my first mission at my job right? I had just been hired and was still in training under uh, we’ll call him my mentor.” His hands move is small gestures as he talks, his arms not leaving the table. He keeps his voice low.

Celestial holds out a hand. “Wait, wait, wait. Are you some kind of spy or something?” She asks, half a grin pulling at the corners of her mouth. She keeps her voice low as well.

He gives her a mock stern look for interrupting. “Hush. Just listen.”

She holds her hands up in defense. “Okay, okay. I’ll be quiet.” She rests her chin on a hand again.

J gives her a small grin and continues. “So my mentor is training me right? So he’s like ‘let’s go on patrol and check in on some people’ so I’m like yea sure seems normal enough. By mid morning I had helped deliver a freaking baby on the side of the road, and that was just the beginning. So my mentor thought something was weird about that hold situation, besides the obvious weirdness. He was like ‘what would make a father risk a warp jump with a newborn, we should check the hot sheets.’ And I’m basically covered in slime and baby vomit, ‘cause yea the baby threw up on me. And I look at him like what the hell are you talking about?” Celestial’s expression changed from shock at the baby delivery, eyes wide and mouth ajar, to confusion at the warp jump, eyebrows furrowed. Her nose scrunches up a bit when he mentioned slime and baby vomit. She stares at him, perplexed, trying to figure out if he’s messing with her or not. He holds up a finger. “I know you’re confused and will have questions, you probably have some already, and I promise I’ll answer them when I’m done. Okay? Just let me get through the story first.”

Celestial takes a deep breath and nods. “Okay. Continue.”

J nods and starts back in on the story. “So he drives us into town right, and stops at one of those stands on sidewalk corners that you can get newspapers and magazines and stuff from. And he buys several of those supermarket tabloids that always have those outrageous stories in them that no one really believes. And I don’t know what to think at this point ‘cause I’m like ‘these are the hot sheets? Really? You’re going to look for tips in these?’ and he’s like ‘they are the best place to look, read the New York Times if you want but these are better.’ And I remember thinking to myself, what kind of job do I have now? He then drops one down on the hood of his car and is like ‘I’m not looking for, I’ve found something.’ And I think the article on the front cover said something like ‘My husband’s skin was stolen by an alien’ or something. I can’t quite remember.” He takes a sip of water and sets the glass down. “So we drive out to see this lady and there’s this big crater in her driveway and a truck that looked like it was torn in half sunk into it. Well we talk to this lady and she says that there was some loud crash the night before and her husband went out to look. And when he came back he was a completely different person. He demanded that she give him water with sugar in it and then he grabbed the back of his head and pulled his skin back so that it stretched unnaturally. She said she fainted after that. So after we get her story my mentor does this weird memory wipe thing with a tool that’s got a light that flashes and the light wipes the memory of a set amount of time from the person who sees it. We then go out to that crater and he takes another tool out of some pocket in his jacket. He scoops up some dirt from the crater into the tool and he watches as some lights flash on it and he’s like ‘don’t be green’ but apparently that’s what it was ‘cause he stood up and asked me some ridiculous question that I had no idea what half the words he said was. I mean it was like he was speaking another language. He called the boss and said we were dealing with a bug. And he explained to me that it was like a giant cockroach with anger issues and an inferiority complex that live off of the death and destruction of other species. And I will say that he massively undersold just how big those bugs are. I was expecting something like human sized right? Maybe six-five at most. No, these things are well over eight feet. Just freaking huge and super ugly too.” He pauses and studies her for a moment.

She’s looking at him intently, waiting for him to continue. She raises an eyebrow. “What?”

He tilts his head, raising his own eyebrows. “You sure you want to hear the rest of this story? It gets weirder from here.”

She nods enthusiastically and reaches across the table to take one of his hands in hers. “Yes! I’m invested now. But I’m going to have a lot of questions for you at the end.” She warns him.

He gives her a smile and squeezes her hand. “I expect you will.” He launches back into the story.

“So my mentor and I are sitting on the ground absolutely covered in this nasty goo. And I mean nasty. You don’t ever want to taste the stuff. But we’re sitting there, and I still can’t believe that he got swallowed just to get his gun back, but it worked I guess. So we’re chatting, taking stock of everything, right. Trying to process everything that just happened when this stupid bug jumps us from behind and tries to swallow me, and then bam, it’s exploded and we’re covered in another layer of bug goo. Apparently you’ve got to destroy a bugs head and body, cause cutting it in half doesn’t kill it. So after that heart attack, my mentor and I look behind us and the morgue lady is standing behind us holding the big gun that I had dropped earlier.” He chuckles and shakes his head. “And I distinctly remember what she said. She goes ‘Interesting job you guys have.’” He shakes his head at the memory. He chuckles and leans back in the booth, rubbing his chin before crossing his arms and looking across the table at Celestial. “So that’s what happened to me during my first two days. In short I helped save the Earth, a galaxy, and got absolutely covered in bug goo. Took forever to get that stuff off.” He falls quiet. He feels relieved to finally share this part of his life with someone, even if it’s just a small piece. He begins to feel nervous the longer the silence stretches and begins to bounce his leg under the table. He hasn’t been this nervous in a while. J realizes with a shock that he wants her to believe him, almost needs her too. J bites his lip and reaches for his water glass. “Well?” He takes a big drink of water.

Celestial is looking at him from across the table. She had linked her hands together again and rested her chin on her thumb a while ago. She’s studying him. “Give me a moment. That’s a lot to process.” She stays that way for a few minutes, J’s nervousness growing. After what seems like forever she shifts in her seat and crosses her arms on the table. “So. What happened to the morgue lady?”

J sits back up. “She joined us for awhile. Was my partner for a month or two before she decided she wanted to go back to the morgue.”

“So you wiped her memory?” Her head tilts a bit to the side.

J nods. “Yea, had to. Company policy.”

“And the company is?” She raises her eyebrows expectantly.

He knew she’d ask this sooner or later. “We’re called the Men In Black.”

She nods. “Okay. A bit dramatic but alright.”

He chuckles. “Yea, I guess it is.”

Celestial uncrosses her arms and puts her hands palms up on the table. “So, let’s see if I’ve got this right.” She lowers her voice a bit more and J leans in. “You work for a super secret government agency.”

J grimaces. “It’s not really a government agency.”

She frowns but nods. “Okay. You work for a super secret agency. The point of this agency is to protect Earth from aliens. So are you some kind of alien hunter?”

J shakes his head. “No. We don’t actively hunt down aliens. We work with them, make sure they have the proper paperwork, get them settled on Earth. We keep track of them and make sure they are following the laws and doing what they are supposed to. If we have to enforce those laws we do and unfortunately sometimes we have to use force to do so.”

She nods. “I see. So you’re like Border Patrol.”

J holds his hand out flat and rocks it back and forth. “Sorta. We’re Earth’s first line of defense.”

Celestial nods again, the corner of her mouth quirking up. “Okay.” She studies him for a minute, eyes narrowing. “You’re not fucking with me are you?”

J shakes his head, eyes open and honest. “No, I’m not. It’s all true, I swear.”

Celestial continues to look at him with narrowed eyes. “Pinky promise?” She lifts a hand from the table, pink extended.

J looks from her to her hand and back again before raising his own hand and hooking his pinky with hers. “Pinky promise.”

Celestial straightens up, putting her hand back on the table. “Then I believe you.”

J’s eyebrows raise in surprise. “You do?” He asks her, not quite believing it.

She nods. “Yep. I believe you.”

He leans back in the booth, relieved. “I’m glad. I didn’t think you would.”

“Are you going to wipe my memory now?” She asks quietly, head tilted to the side.

J’s eyebrows shoot up in shock. “Why would you ask that?”

She gives him a halfhearted smile and shrugs. “Company policy? Civilians aren’t supposed to know are they?”

J shifts in his seat, uncomfortable. “No, they aren’t supposed to know.” He keeps his eyes on the table.

“So? Are you going to do it or not?”

He makes an important decision in that moment, one that will end up saving his life.

“No.” He meets her gaze. “I’m not. I don’t actually have the device on me right now. Guess you’ll just have to keep my secret.”

She smiles at him. “That I can do, Bluejay.”

A man sitting at the bar smiles. He’s got on multiple jackets and a red and white knitted hat with earflaps. He’s been watching the interaction. “Oh. So this is that reality. Good. He needs some happiness.” He turns back to his pie.

I generally don’t do these but...

I will do this because it’s a badge of honor and a thank you for @todayintokyo who gives me a daily vibe out of my second fav Country in the world (first one is my own, of course. My messy, chaotic, genius Italy).

So for everyone interested (I won’t tag people either... if you are among my 250+ readers, do it as freely as you like to share this unexpected hard time along others. Sharing makes us all feel less stranded I guess :))

1. Are you staying home from work/school? Yep. My University (Milano Bicocca) holds in-house lessons and curses and also exams and testing are/will be online. What I miss most are the lab works and the exchanges with foreign schools. I took one a few months ago in London and I was supposed to have another in May but... NOPE, of course.

2. If you’re staying home, who’s there with you? I am alone in my apartment. At first it was supposed to be shared rent with somebody else but then my parents just bought this out and lent it to me. I know. I am spoiled. But very grateful for what I have. I always try to give back the best I can because no one has merits in being born in a family instead of another. (pieces of second-rate philosophy in all my LONG answers courtesy of my mum and her influence on me. She’s a University Professor and her field is.. guess what.. ETHICS PHILOSOPHY)

3. Do you have pets to keep you company? Nope. Not allowed. But I like cats. Cats. CATS. They are elegant, refined, very clean, and they give you consideration and affection ONLY if they like you. I prefer to conquer somebody’s love instead than to have it by default. Then I am naturally a cat person instead of a dog’s. But I like all animals (I like snakes as well, so my range is pretty wide ;)), even though I don’t feel missing any in house. Generally I would be out of home most of the day and no pet would be happy in staying that much alone. I miss my grandparents’ kitty tho :)

4. Who do you miss the most? Family. Friends. Meeting new people when out. And... (is it fine to say it?) Well... in these lockdown times I miss... human touch. (You get what kind). I was seeing a guy when this all started and my old boyf also came back into the picture somehow. All on hold. And I avoid to think how that makes me feel because even in case I’d figure it out, what comes if one can’t act on the awareness? Exactly. So I put it all in a LONG pause. But yeah... I miss contacts. A LOT.

5. When was the last time you left your home? I go out every Thursday to buy all my grocery stuff. I am very methodic. My supermarket is pretty near and it’s BIG and I get there right before it opens (well... one hour almost before it opens, so I can be among the firsts in line). I look like a ninja: very sporty and technically dressed (like for a running competition!) with clothes and shoes which are easy washable, tech mask (it is for cycling competition, with filters specifically medical: the mask is washable as well after you’ve used it, while the filter is obviously not), cotton fit gloves and over them medical gloves (I can’t wear directly medical gloves because my skin is very sensitive and I suffer from nickel allergia, which makes latex gloves a NO NO directly on skin), teck googles which cover also the side of my face (those are from cycling items too) and of course PODS in my ear because I can’t live without music :)

6. What was the last thing you bought? I bought online a few garden tools for my biggest balcony. I have ZERO skill with plants (and I am supposed to become a biologist... the nerve! LOL) but I am keen at making grow at least rosemery for my recipes. I have a little peach tree and it is all fine so far. I have hope I can do better and anyway I have time now ;)

7. Is quarantine driving you insane or are you finally relaxed? I try to keep my routine as it was before. I wake up and perform all my tasks exactly as I was doing before this all started. I am VERY organized and to lax on that would ruin me, so I carefully focus on what I can control the best I can. It feels strange to say it maybe but... this way my mood isn’t particularly affected by this heavy revolution in my (and everyone elses’s) life.

8. Are you a homebody? NOPE. I love people, I love my Milan and its being always full of people everywhere. I love living in my town a TON, I love meeting friends anywhere, go dancing, I love to live my University life in this beautiful and renewed part of Milan; I like being surrounded by my people and meeting new ones. So being stuck at home would seem insufferable for me. But I learnt from this (there’s always something to learn in any experience) that I can be surprisingly ok with staying home too. I came to know better my neighbors. I feel a sense of community with everyone living nearby and I have come to love my domesticity too. It was a surprise for me first ^.^

9. What movies have you watched recently? In Italy, Italia 1 channel has had the WONDERFUL idea to rebroadcast all Harry Potter saga every Monday and Thursday. Today and tomorrow there are the last two installments, so I can say that is what I looked out the most for as in movie things these past weeks (funny how I never particularly adored the books of HP, I mean, I liked them but... being a Tolkien’s devotee Rowlings’ literary efforts always seemed lackluster to me.. and still I have always liked the movies. It’s incoherent I know ;)). But I have Sky at home so I can watch whatever movie I like to whenever I want to. And that leads to VERY little watch actually. I am reading a ton though. I watch what passes on in the National channels actually, out of digital and cable and decide to watch it or not. For instance last Friday Rai 1 (main Italian Channel) broadcasted one of my fav movies from the past three years, GIFTED (with Chris Evans and Octavia Spencer) and I rewatched it with immense pleasure.

10. An event that you were looking forward to that got cancelled? OLYMPICS. I was supposed to be back in Japan with a a couple of friends and my bro for experience the Olympics (especially the volleyball tournaments) between July and August and that got (of course) cancelled. We plan to move it all to next year of course. But it hurts SO MUCH because it was easily what I was looking forward to BEST for all 2020. Hands down.

11. What’s the best and worst thing you’ve had to cancel? Look up. For the other question, I never plan things I don’t like (or at least I try my best not to) and I almost never find myself in the position of being happy for something I had going on which I had to pass due to circumstances. I am a very honest (sometimes to the point of bluntness, though with age I got trained in the fine art of diplomacy, which for me is declined especially in the “IGNORE WHAT IS NOT WORTHY degree) person and if there is something I don’t like I tend to not get involved with it in the first place.

12. Do you have any new hobbies? Eh... the longest list... I love so many things. Sport don’t count as hobbies to me because I treat them as part of my daily life constantly. So take them off. I like to write, to draw, to paint... I like reading, I like learning... I am a tech geek; I like gaming (but that I have to cut it or it would absorb me too much)... I like TRAVELING (that is cut off too of course nowadays), and many other things so I guess I don’t literally have SPACE for new hobbies. My many ones makes it impossible to fall for new things though lately I am becoming a better cook out of needs ;)

13. What are you out of? My lists are made as soon my things become “two items in from having 0″. This way I can’t run out of anything. Did I say already I am a HUGE control freak? THAT ;)

14. What music are you listening to? My itunes collections lists so far 12376 ALBUMS. Then I have the random songs. Latest one I bought (because I buy them all) is Achille Lauro’s latest 16 Marzo

I am also listening a lot to one of my bro’s fav bands Radiohead and as usual a lot to my beloved Imagine Dragons. My mum and dad are also telling me to listen to Bill Withers (who recently passed away) whole discography because he was amazing. I love many music genres. I love ALL which makes the spirit soar and rage and evolve and love and cry and hope.

15. What are you reading? So far in quarantine I read 5 books. I have now to start ORIGINS by Dan Brown. I pick the books I have left unread randomly and that was the pick this time (people gift me with books constantly because they know I am a bookworm when I have spare time).

16. What are you doing for self-care? Keep loving myself and life and the world exactly the way I used to before this all started.

17. Are you exercising? Yup. Tapis roulant, golf training, stepper (all in my house lucky me) and mat and weight training. I have a routine for which I have to train at least one hour a day. NO EXCEPTION. I miss swimming but I will do. I am also in recovery after January’s knee meniscus intervention so my schedules are also taking that into consideration.

18. How’s your toilet paper supply? I'm OK. :)

19. Have you made any changes to your hair during quarantine? Nope. I love to stylize my hair but I don’t have specific cuts. It grows long and then I play with them hairstyles: braids, buns, ponytails, partitions and the likes.. But I have bleached hair and I had to follow my hairdresser advice because I can’t allow ugly roots to take dominance of me ^.^ So I bought the necessary to self bleach them. No need to say as soon as I will be able to, Hairdressers and Massages and SPA will be my first destination ^.^ (beside visiting family and friends of course).

I am fairly sure I put lots of typos and mistakes in this but I have my online lesson just starting in 8 minutes and I can’t review this (I generally never do it anyway). So forgive me and have a beautiful day ;)

Bar Spar: The Boxing Competition Getting Bartenders in Shape

Harper Howell II, a bartender at New York City’s Dear Irving, will be the first to tell you his gig isn’t the spitting image of health. It’s not uncommon for bartenders to chase shots of tequila with espresso to get through a shift. And convenience is often the deciding factor when it comes to food. (How many bartenders do you think come to work toting a Tupperware of meal prep?) More often than not, they feast at late-night haunts that serve up griddle burgers and baskets of fries—often in the company of other chefs, servers, and bartenders. And as for a fitness routine? It might consist of sweating once or twice a week, if they’re lucky. The truly committed might wake up at dawn to run a few miles or sweat it out in the gym, but it takes a tremendous amount of discipline. ]] “Our lifestyles are hard with long, grueling hours,” Howell says. It’s easy to chalk up an unhealthy diet and a nearly nonexistent fitness regimen to not having enough time in the day. But every professional knows it boils down to making the time for what’s important. Though it never hurts to have a little competition as motivation. That’s why Howell’s spent the past few months getting in the best shape of his life as a part of Bar Spar. It’s a year-long program sponsored by Tequila Cazadores and The Bartender Boxing Organization that pits U.S. and Canadian bartenders against one another. The bartenders will participate in local fights. Winners will go on to compete against other winning bartenders of participating cities. Those who reign supreme in the final fights will win a three-day, all-expenses-paid trip to Guadalajara and Arandas, Mexico, to visit the home of Tequila Cazadores.

]] Selected bartenders have to clean up their acts big time. Howell, for one, has undergone an intense three-month training regimen with professional trainers and adopted a nutrition plan to boot, transforming his lifestyle from quasi-healthy to peak physical condition. Now, he’s getting ready to enter the ring to fight. The competition kicks off Nov. 4 in Chicago. Curious how he did it? Men’s Journal recently caught up with the 29-year-old bartender to talk about the regimen that changed his life, pushing your body harder than ever before, and what drinks to order the next time you’re out (naturally). What does your training routine look like?

]] It’s sweaty. I don’t think I’ve ever sweat as much in an hour’s time in my life. My training routine is pretty vigorous. We train every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday for an hour or an hour and a half—everything from conditioning, drills for technique, work on the bag, one-on-one sparring, and core work. Some days, we’re trying to hit each other in the face, and other days were more focused on the technique of our punches and movements. On off days, I go to high-intensity interval training (HIIT) classes to help with my stamina and also get some muscle-building in.

What aspect of training has made the biggest impact on your body?

The conditioning. A little cardio can go a long way. We don’t do much with weights. We mainly rely on our body weight to work out—a lot of plyometric moves and some HIIT. From those alone, I can tell I’ve gotten definition and my stamina has increased.

What’s the biggest fitness lesson you’ve learned?

Discipline, focus, and personal dedication. I don’t come from a very active family. I was never very motivated to be aware of my fitness and health until later in life. This has been an eye-opener into what my own body is capable of. I know I have the ability to push my body and work harder than I ever have before. What does your nutritional plan look like?

I try to meal prep as much as possible. I focus on meat for protein, then a mix of veggies. I’ll grab a protein bar, apple, or a nice trail mix (not the candy kind) so that even if I’m eating late, it’s not total crap and is still fueling my body to a degree. There are still days where I’ll snag a couple bites of ice cream or popcorn, but I’m not getting fast food. It’s amazing how small changes in my diet have made me feel. I don’t feel sluggish. I want to go to the supermarket to get fresh veggies and cook. I’m less bloated, and I’ve trimmed down.

How do you recover?

]] I do some light stretching if I’m feeling sore, then water, water, water. I carry a water bottle with me everywhere.

Any must-have products?

A foam roller and resistance bands.

How can you make sure social drinking doesn’t screw with your workouts?

Moderation. It can be hard for bartenders. But if I know I have an early morning, I’ll allow myself to go out and meet up with friends, but I’ll watch myself and the time to make sure I’m home at a decent hour to unwind and get a decent amount of sleep. It’s important to be aware of what your body needs to perform. Also, just because you’re out with friends, doesn’t mean you have to drink as much or at all. A guy walks into a bar and wants a “healthier” cocktail that’s still delicious. What should he order?

]] A Caballo Blanco. It incorporates tequila (preferably Cazadores), mezcal for a smoky aspect, pineapple and ginger juices, and some angostura bitters, topped off with club soda.

What’s a killer mocktail you’d recommend?

One that my best friend, Caroline Woodruff, made for a competition recently mixes a lot of fresh and vegetal ingredients that play well off each other. It’s called The Alternate Route. Here’s how to make it: Ingredients .1.5oz raw orange bell pepper juice .75 turmeric/wild orange tea syrup .75oz yuzu juice .25oz lemon juice ]] Directions Add ingredients to a shaker with ice. Rim a glass with a mixture of curry and Himalayan sea salt. Shake mocktail, then strain over fresh ice.

What’s been your biggest takeaway from this experience?

I’ve learned to be conscious of how my lifestyle not only affects the now, but also the future. Heart and health issues run in my family—and they’ve been a huge motivator for me to make lifestyle changes now, push myself, and make decisions to continue my fitness outside of our three days a week of training. I’m going to go on a rant about Airbnb.

I am writing this post at 10PM on Sunday, 9/29 in Paris. I’m going to jump around a bit in time, but I am need to address Airbnb upfront.

So, when Nic and I first arrived in France on 9/15, we stayed ONE night in Paris before driving to Saint-Malo and doing the road trip. Because we just needed ONE night to stay in Paris, I rented a ROOM via Airbnb. The photos of the apartment looked nice, and the apartment was in a really nice location.

Before we arrived, I received a BUNCH of messages from the host. Literally 4 messages. I’m going to post them here because I want a record of this (btw, homeboy needs to update his photo because he does NOT look like this, but that is besides the point):

Okay, looks innocuous enough, right? Then I received a SECOND message:

RED FLAG: #2: More than 30 minutes? #4, really? And then he says he looks forward to seeing us?

Anyway, I was like, okay...I get it. He wants to make sure we can get in and etc. For the sake of completeness, here is message #3 (nice details, to be honest):

Message #4 (notice the timetable of letting him know about our arrival has become even more tight...it was 30 minutes earlier, and now it’s 20 minutes?):

Also, he said in the advertisement we could get into the apartment after 12:30, now it’s 12:45 PM.

All that being said, we did our stay on September 15th. We left less than 24 hours later (see my blog post about our first stay in Paris) and moved on. The way Airbnb works is that you leave reviews for the host and they leave reviews about you as a guest. Let’s check my previous reviews:

Nic and I literally arrived at this guy’s apartment, didn’t cook, didn’t use the kitchen, drank 2 COFFEES using his Kurig machine/coffee pods, washed the 2 freaking cups we used, and took 2 SHOWERS TOTAL. We arrived at 2PM and left before 10AM.

Why did we arrive at 2PM? Because when I contacted homeboy when we arrived in Paris, he was out RUNNING, missed my call, and then was grocery shopping and said we couldn’t come to his place before 12:30.

What review did he leave me?

Nope. I don’t play these games. Nic and I came to the apartment at 2 PM, I took a shower, and we took a nap. No lights were on. We LEFT, got dinner, and came back around 9 PM. We went to sleep, woke up at 8 AM, packed, drank 2 COFFEES, and LEFT. What lights? What electricity? And WHY AM I PAYING YOU?

My response:

Conclusion: FUCK. YOU. Sorry, that is harsh, but seriously? I am not sure if he can respond to my response, but if he can, good luck. I have said all I needed to say on this issue so that’s it.

Nic had the issue with Airbnb in Arles (read that entry) so I will say: Booking.com your apartments/hotels if you can. It’s more professional, people purely rent their spaces to guests so understand what to expect, and don’t act like entitled assholes. Airbnb at your own risk.

Okay, so I woke up to this bad review, so I just had to address it. But backtrack to Friday after we got off the train and entered our Paris apartment (which, btw is gorgeous; through Booking.com):

I have been in contact with the host the whole time. We have the whole apartment, and the host has been amazing in terms of being in contact with me. Our arrival time changed, and no issues. The kitchen is stocked with supplies, the sheets and bathrooms immaculate, and a complete 180 from asshole.

Friday night, Nic and I just hit up a bar/art space and hung out:

We went walking through Paris, before returning to the apartment for some tapas dinner:

So, the plan was that we we were going to host a dinner party for Nic’s friends on Saturday. I planned a menu which went through some revisions due to the market availability, but I’ll address that.

The original menu was:

Apertif: -Sausage (bought) -Sardine spread (homemade) -Nuts -Chips -Sparkling wine

Starter: -Red Cabbage and French Radish salad w/mustard vinagrette

Main: -Roast pork with an onion and grape sauce

Dessert: -Something bought

Cheese: -Up to Nic

Drinks: -Rouge

Saturday’s plan was to include antiquing (I wanted to buy some plates or glasses) and then to buy the food for the dinner party. Guests were to arrive at 6:30/7:00 (which meant 7:00 or 8:00 in French time). Guests were to include: Nic’s best friend (consultant), Nic’s brother (officer in French military) and Nic’s brother’s friend (historian). And me and Nic, of course.

So, now we are at Saturday.

We woke up and went antiquing! The oldest “flea” market in Paris is right outside the city. When you get off the train, you are greeted with a bunch of stalls selling fake Louis Vuitton and designer wares. Nic needed a belt, so he bought one:

Once you walk through the outdoor market, you walk through these antique, rich stalls that are selling really expensive items. Like, people literally have magnifying glasses examining signatures, construction, and the quality of the glass on items.

I wanted wine glasses, and bought 2 crystal Baccarat wine glasses for a good price (15 Euros each):

Plates and silverware were a wash since I couldn’t find matches or the plates weren’t hand painted. Anyway, when I have money I would love to come back and buy a complete set of glasses or silverware.

Okay, after the day at the market it was time to get lunch and then go shopping for the dinner party. Nic used to live and go to university around the area, and knew of a really good vegetarian Indian restaurant (thank ____. I can’t wait to go back to being vegan!!!!)

Nic is probably literally gaining so much weight because of me. I eat half the food and he eats his portion and then finishes mine. On the menu was samosas (the triangles on the photo before) and then this meal was vegetarian biryani (rice), some yellow pea dal (to the left of rice), and then chickpea dish (far top left) and egglplant (far top right)

After lunch, we went to a supermarket and bought all the food for the dinner party. Then I started cooking!

So, menu became revised because the store didn’t have any purple cabbage for the cabbage salad. Red cabbage salad became a Belgium endive, french radish, and fresh walnut salad (same dressing). Here is Nic cracking the walnuts for me:

I made a sardine spread a la David Lebovitz. We couldn’t find fresh sardines, so I had to buy canned sardines (just sardines, no oil). You have to remove the spines and bones, but that is fine. I just removed the spines and bones and baked them with a little bit of olive oil in the oven. Then follow the recipe.

We served that with some Spanish chorizo (bought), pistachio nuts, mustard flavored potato chips, pretzels, and some baguette toasts along with sparking wine.

Salad was the endive salad:

Belgium endive, sliced French radishes, some salad greens, fresh cracked walnuts, and a mustard vinaigrette.

Main:

Roast pork with a pearl onion/grape sauce with roasted fingerling potatoes. How I did the pork:

-Melt some butter in a dutch oven -Sear pork on all sides that has been coarse salted and peppered (I did 1kg for 5 people, and we had leftovers) -Remove pork, add a cup of white wine to the drippings -Add 2 cups of chicken broth, peeled pearl onions, garlic, and thyme -Add pork back in -Cook on low on the stove for an hour -Remove pork; cover with foil -Raise heat and reduce the onion sauce for 40 minutes -Another pan, add some butter -Add 1 cup grapes whole (French grapes) -Grapes will burst and become its own sauce -When ready to serve, add pork back into reduced onion sauce -Cook for 20 minutes to heat pork and finish cooking -Remove pork, slice -Top with onion sauce -Top with grape sauce -Sprinkle with chives

For the potatoes: -Clean and cut potatoes in half -Sprinkle with garlic and some olive oil -Roast for 1 hour -Serve

Dinner was a success! Dessert was an apple tart we bought. Nic’s brother is the forward right; he had to take the 6AM train to be back in the morning. The person I am talking to is the historian who went to school with Nic’s brother, and we were talking about politics (of course) and the differences in curriculum between France and America. Nic’s best friend Julien is a consultant, so we talked about our needy clients. After dinner, they all went out to meet other friends, but I stayed back to clean and just go to sleep. I was tired!

Next morning (SUNDAY):

I loaded the dishwasher from the night before, but we needed to do another load of dishes. Nic graciously said he would clean from the night before, so he unloaded and reloaded the dishwasher. The plan was to visit Musee d’Orsay, so we cleaned (he cleaned) and we left!

On our way to the museum, we passed by Serge Gainsbourg’s old house. Remember the small holes song from Saint-Malo? It has followed me here!

Nic’s mom loves the song, and I promised I would learn it in French.

Anyway, museum!

After the museum, it was around 6:00PM. We went on a walk, and then went to the store to buy dinner and food for our flight tomorrow. We have to leave the apartment by 11:00 AM, and our flight is at 2:15 PM.

Last dinner! Store bought pizza ($5) and leftover endive radish salad. And a quiche.

I can’t can’t can’t wait to be vegan again. Tomorrow, the meat and cheese will be gone.

I have lots of trinkets I have bought along the way: mustards, salts, a St. James wool sweater, soaps from Marseille, art from Caylus, crystal glasses from Paris, candies, and of course all the memories.

On our walk home, this rainbow greeted us. I’ll miss France, but it is time to come home.

10 Tips for Hitchikers

Today we are going to talk about something that I thought it might be useful to alternative travellers. And not only, seeing that the general opinion in Europe about hithhiking is relatively ambiguous on how trustworthy is it for moving around and also on how safe is it for both travellers and drivers.

Before we continue I want to say a quick thing, that is:

the least economically progressed is the country in which you travel, the more are the chances you actually get to meet new friends. Here it is: we discovered hot water!

Joking apart, in terms of human interaction, I felt an incredible shift from Croatia - west-ward.

For who doesnt know about my most recent experience in hitchhiking, I travelled from Iran to central Europe in a journey of two years. All by thumb for exception of one or two buses for minor movements.

The change of scenario that I experienced from the balcans to Croatia revealed itself in the matter of people being eloquently suspicious, scared and overall, in my humble opinion, nevrotic.

When I reached Poland, I couldnt stress enough this point with my friends, that what I was seeing, by just looking around after a year in the est of Europe and in middle east, looked to me like a horror movie.

People glazing jars of confecture like hypnotized at the supermarket, people reaching to their phone as soon as they were alone, people looking at my rugged clothes as if I had leprosis.. and so on.

For the first time in one year of travel I felt so self conscious about my appeareance and my general behaviour.

It was as if the power of dividing humans was not anymore a prerogative of money, but if people themselves had became money.

Never the less I remained in Europe for a while, just to live there and eventually to adapt and normalize myself, Till everything that now I see is normal, or just ok, or it doesnt matter anyway.

Saying this, I definetely love Bosnia Hercegovina, Albania, Kosovo, Montenegro.. I enjoyed my breathing and my being in flow as I rarely had before.

When the driver invites you home and you stay there for days. In the countryside of Banja Luka, Bosnia Hercegovina.

Paranoid is not an issue over there, yet.

Or if it is, well, I can tell that in central Europe the state of fear and diffidence toward the human being is much worse.

Now my 10 tips for the good hitchiker. I hope you find them useful.

I believe these tips are interesting not only for the traveller, but also for suspicious drivers, as they might realize that after all, its just human beings standing there on the side of the road. And that these human beings, more often than not, are as much as scared as the drivers themself. Of being kidnapped, cutted in piece, raped, eaten, dissolved.. not necessarily in the order.

If you are at your first experiences, I would plan a trip in countries where hitchiking is the normal thing, as diffused and accepted as bus drives. Then, once the confidence is boosted you can bring the Verb of the Thumb to other countries and spread the custom. Do it in the balcans or in Romania for example, where if you are lucky, you wont have to wait longer than few minutes for a ride. But remember that most drivers there expect a symbolic payment after the ride is over. That’s called hay tax, as the tradition roots back to long ago. This lead us to point number

Always ask, before getting in the car, if the ride is for free. And if you dont want to pay, make it clear from the beginning. Otherwise, its not only unfair, but it can be troublesome.

If you have been told it’s for free, dont let the driver scare you into paying. In hundreds of rides, this happened to me only once, but still it wont help you to show fear as this might easily lead you into being actually robbed.

Truck drivers are your best friends! They are definetely scary when you drive by them, but trust these words, there is seldom good people around as truck drivers. Their heart is huge. It would take me several pages to name all the good I have received from truck drivers! Shared meals, cigarettes, long talks, music, laughs, I have been even spontaneously donated money sometimes! If you learn some russian or slavic language this will definetely help in Europe as most truck drivers, at least in my experience, come from slavic countries and they are genuinely happy to have someone to talk to. Be nice, and...

Bring some food to share! Nuts, crackers, sweets.. anything that your new friend can grab a bit of. An old calabrian proverb says that you can call someone a friend only when you have shared meals enough to consume a ton of salt. Even though this proverb clearly states that you never know anyone unless you spend huge amount of time together , this also says that you have to eat with a person to became friends. Or if not, just hand a cigarette, a little present.. anything that would actually show a bit of respect and gratitude.

Use Wikinomad! In there you will find the hitchhiking section, organized city by city. So for example, if you are in Prague and you want to go to Wroclaw, it tells you which spots are the hottest and it also contains the reports of previous hitch hikers who have used those spots, by even adding their average waiting time!

For me this was definetely useful, not only for the directions, that anyway you can find them yourself on google map.. but more than anything for the sake of knowing that there is actually a community and a tradition of travellers .. and that you are not the only madhead.

Water is never enough. Especially in summers. If you go a long way and you find yourself stranded in the middle of nowhere, bring at least a 1.5 litres of water and a sleeping bag.

Learn few words of native language. For me it wasnt always possible as sometimes I would cross three countries in a week and words would get all mixed up in my fucked-up brain. But still, try, because its mostly appreciated. And this is obviously valid also for non hitchikers. It sounds bad when you go somewhere and straight away you claim that they know english or worse, your native language. Ok, this might sound an advice for dummies, but I have seen a lot of backpackers approaching people in english as if they ought to understand.

And if you really cant remember few words, at least ask if they speak english before you assumingly start to speak in english.

If you are hitchiking in Iran, dont use the thumb up because over there it equals the middle finger of the west. Wave your hand at waist hight and that will be enough. And make it clear that you dont want the driver to take you to a bus station and that you want to go together to wherever you are headed.

It’s because mostly in Iran, local people dont know what hitch hiking is. Dont be shy! Just explain, if they speak english. And if they dont, just smile and say the place you are headed to. Ants communicate and they never speak!

I have seen many backpackers writing their signs in very small cardboards, or worse, with unreadable calligraphy. It has to be at least an A4 carboard and you need to consider that it has to be spotted from far away. This means also that you never ever ever have to stand in a place where if a car stops, you cause an accident.

I have seen experienced backpackers, and I did it myself once, positioned right after a curve with not enough space to pull the breaks and stop comfortably. Choose your spot carefully, even if it takes a long time or if the ones that you need are occupied. Move further along the street and come back if necessary. Of course you can be picked up anywhere but for the safety of everybody, choose the pitch with care.

Especially before your ride, stay away from paranoid people, the ones who have a problem for every solution. Of course you are going to deal with troubles.. but no more than a regular traveller will and with the main bonus that you are going to meet and talk with a lot of different individuals. And this adventure, without you even noticing, will boost your confidence about yourself and will add a huge window into your knowledge and acceptance of humankind. Your senses will be much sharper than the ones of who travels in the ordinary way. And if you do it long enough, surely you will meet new friends and its not rare that you will share also their house and meals and more than just a few hours in their car. You have absolutely nothing to loose by hitchiking, but all to gain for your heart and mind.

And dont fucking rush! If you are on hurry take a flight or a train! Just enjoy the ride, look out of the window and if he/she feels like, have a chat with whoever is the driver.

Many say: easy for you! You are a man!

You would be shocked to know that most hitchikers I met where solitary attractive girls.

Bring with you a chilli spray if that makes you feel safe. Or simply talk your way out of a driver that doesnt inspire you. You are not obliged to jump on anyone’s car and you still have your pepper spray.

I know lot of girls who travelled half world by hitchiking alone and they didnt have more issues than I myself had.

Saying this, if you are a girl and dont feel confident enough you can still bring a girlfriend with you. Two pepper spray is better than one.

I met Sam in Montenegro as he was hitch hiking north, then I visited him in Slovakia. Very scary guy as you can see.

#33 - Interview with Honour the Ocean Beach Survey Officer

Interviewer:Ok, so the first question is what was your role in Positive Change for Marine Life?

Interviewee: I was a data survey officer I think was the title… maybe clarify with Zoe what our official title was but yeah, it was a data surveyor. So we um, what our was, was we would go down to the beach every, every Saturday. Um, every fortnight on a Saturday morning usually around 830 to 9. Sorry, Daniella, did you want the detail of the role?

Interviewer: Yeah, please, please, whatever you can give me.

Interviewee: Yeah, so um, we would meet fortnightly Saturday mornings, um, we would advertise on Facebook and we usually have between about 6 to maybe 10 participants?

Interviewer:Hello?

Interviewee: (breaking up) Oh, can you hear me?

Interviewer:Sorry, now I can hear you.

Interviewee: Excellent. We had um, one morning we had Ziggy Alberts come and do like a guest appearance and we had the news reporters there and I think we got about 35 to 40 participants. But what we is um, we would segment the beach into four 50-meter sections so you’ve got, um, you got four 50-meter transect, sorry. So, 250 meters in total, um, we—I would um measure those 50 meters out and then we would go down to the beach and we’d tell—explain to everybody ‘okay, we want everyone to pick up rubbish in this 50 meters segment, um transect’ and then we would put all of that into one bag as like, section 1 and then we would do that four times over and then we would come back up to the beach, empty each transect out individually and then we would go through that and we would sort trash into soft plastics, hard plastics, paper, cardboard, um, and it got really nitty gritty down to like um, plastic cutlery, plastic straws, lighters, so it was very like, um, it was very specific and then we would enter that data into a spreadsheet on Excel on Google Drive. So it’s accessible to everyone within the organization.

Interviewer: Um, how did people find out about the beach cleanups?

Interviewee:Um, usually through word of mouth, or Facebook.

Interviewer: Okay.

Interviewee:So, so most—like a lot of the time it was friends, um, even though it might be me running the beach clean , a lot of people that were part of Positive Change would come and volunteer as well as a maybe a few friends would come along. And then maybe we might get three or four people on Facebook as well as people would just come and join maybe for like half the time who saw us doing the beach clean. Like people were really interested in being a part of it, so that you might even get people who have been just like picking up trash along the beach on their own accord, and then they’d want to add it to your transect and you’d say, ‘well, sorry, this is part of like a scientific data survey research study’ so you can’t actually add it to these transects but ‘hey, well done, congratulations, maybe go put it in the trash can’. Like people would just would want to join for hat validation of being a part of something bigger.

Interviewer: Oh, cool. Yeah. Why did you get involved with Positive Change?

Interviewee: Um, a lot of my volunteering before Positive Change was as like my study reflects, um… I'm interested in like people and psychology. So, a lot of my work was with like Red Cross and working with homeless or whatever it may be. It was always volunteering to do with people and then um, I kind of figured maybe going to the source and helping with an environmental action would be more beneficial, which, I did find it a bit more rewarding. So I came to volunteering for Positive Change because Zoe… she was a data survey officer. She saw an advert online on Seek or Facebook or something, I can’t remember where she saw it. I had at the time being volunteering—or I was in the process of becoming—have you heard of the Boomerang Bag Initiative?

Interviewer: No.

Interviewee: So, it’s this other, like, initiative that’s kind of going around Australia where by like groups of people would come together and they’d sew bags to leave at supermarkets and then people, like, it’s supposed to be like a trust—a trust system where people will take a Boomerang Bag and use it and then bring it back when they remember to bring their own bag next time or whatever.

Interviewer: Oh, that’s so cool!

Interviewee:And I was—someone had asked me like, as soon as I said I was interested, they were like, ‘oh, sweet can I just hand over the entire project to you’ and I was like ‘well, hang on, I don’t even know how to make the bags or anything’ so it was a bit overwhelming and I spoke to Zoe about this and she was ‘like maybe, maybe you can come volunteer for Positive Change, like you can do the data survey stuff’. So, I ended up doing that instead and Zoe got sort of, I don’t know if you want to use the word ‘promoted’ but like she was in charge of all the data survey people so, yeah, she was like ‘well come and work on the team’ and yeah, that’s how I got the role.

Interviewer: Nice. What was the training process like to prepare for this—uh, for the job that you had?

Interviewee:Yeah, so, um, we… what did we do? Um, I had to—sorry I just got a bit distracted. We had… who was it? It was me and Zoe—I can't remember fully. Anyway, two of us were taken by an experienced data survey person. So, we keep all of our equipment and things at the Life Saving Club in Byron, so they took us there, showed us everyting and pretty much ran a beach clean whilst explaining how to do it. So we were just there sort of watching and then the next time we went it was like, the two of us ran the beach clean whilst the supervisor or the person who had experience watched us and made sure we were doing everything right and if we had any questions, and then pretty much from there… Um, at the time we had a really strong team, so we always had two of us to run them. Um, so there was kind of always someone to fall back on and, you know, ask questions and figure it out together. So yeah, we had two sessions, two beach cleans where we had somebody there and then from then on we were kind of left to our own devices.

Interviewer:Wow, that's cool I didn't… I didn't even know they like, yeah you could store it in the Life Saving Club. Um, and what sorts of resources or materials did you use during that time for the cleanups?

Interviewee: Um, what kind of equipment? We had like the little grabby sticks, like the—

Interviewer: --I'm sorry, like, um, in what terms of like, like did you guys have any like resources or materials for the public to view and to see like… was there—

Interviewee: --So like promotional sort of, and informational?

Interviewer: Yeah.

Interviewee: Yeah yeah yeah. We had, I think we had about five different brochures to sort of read what from—starting from like where Positive Change began, what they do now, um, you know, their India initiative where they’re doing, um, waste conservation, um… There was, um, a big, like, board that said you know like, ‘beach clean and programs down on the beach, come join’, um… So there was, yeah there was always lots of sort of, um, reading material and information, I suppose.

Interviewer: Cool. And then based on after gathering the data from the beach cleanups, what were the next steps after getting all of that data, like did you—yeah, what was the next steps in terms of like the community and putting anything into action after the data analysis?

Interviewee: Um, that was sort of where we got caught because we didn't—our team was, yeah, I don’t know, we had lots of ideas, um and I think we kind of just didn't have maybe the follow-through that we required to really—you know like, we could—from the data you could see where the plastic was coming from, like that was getting caught in the rocks. You could see specific venues there were, um—where the waste is coming from and ideally it would have been great to talk to those venues and like, um, help them through—maybe, maybe help them find solutions. Um, but as I said, I think we just didn’t have the time and the resources as a team to, um, sort of follow through with that and make a solid impact. We did have a—and I think Karl will still probably be working on it. It’s um, and like, everything that I say—I haven’t been involved in Positive Change for a year now, so I’m kind of removed from it all, um, but we had this, uh, initiative called… Can you—check with Zoe, um, shit… It was, um, yeah, like flag this moment as like a question for Zoe but we had this initiative where we’re going around to companies and we were like making them partners with Positive Change, so we like, we’d like advertise them as a, um, plastic-free venue, so they would like have someone come from Positive Change to help them be less- plastic-waste-orientated.

Interviewer: Oh, cool.

Interviewee: But they kind of had to say—yeah yeah yeah, like, we were going around, um, but it was kind of like the venue had to be willing to have us there.

Interviewer: Right. Is that part of Activ8 for the Ocean?

Interviewee: No, that was going around to schools and stuff, there’s another initiative, um…

Interviewer: Like, Business Sustainability?

Interviewee:Yeah, yeah.

Interviewer:Okay, cool. Yeah I’ll definitely double-check with her on that and then just my last question, in what ways are you continuing to pursue your passion with protecting the ocean>

Interviewee: Um, at the moment, it’s sort of just my personal interactions, and like, I suppose, now’s not—like an amazing time to be chatting about it because traveling, you have very little control of your environment. And I’ve been really personally juggling with the things that I am seeing overseas and the lack of initiative. Like, for example, I’m in Greece on a Greek island and there's no—there’s no fresh running water, like you can’t drink from the tap, um, so everyone buys drinking water in plastic and I found out that only 2% of their waste on the island is able to be recycled, the rest just goes to general waste. Um, but, so like educating people that I come into contact with, like, okay if you boil kettle, that kills the bacteria in the water that they say is in the water, so technically you should be able to drink the water, right?

Interviewer:Mhm, yeah.

Interviewee:So, um, I suppose for me my personal journey with waste management is interacting people on an everyday basis while I’m traveling. What does 'annual deductible' mean for health insurance?

Hey guys so I just want to get this straight because we are looking at purchasing new insurance... When it says Annual Deductible; $7500 does that mean after I paid that amount within the calendar year, then the insurance would kick in and start paying some of the cost? Is this still true with any type of doctor visit like routine checkups and stuff? It also says this regarding that Member pays $30 Copay or 30% after deductible (applies to the 3 office visit copay limit) . Can someone give me an explanation? It doesn't seem like this is a good option if I would have to pay $7500 before any insurance kicks in right?""

Hello, I recieved a ticket in January for Driving without Insurance in Florida. The officer cited me 110$ and let me go, I stayed off the road for a few weeks immediately purchased insurance within 30 days. However my ticket is still unpaid due to lack of employment, bills and stuff and license just go suspended.
