I like that this show poses the question "what if making teen girls upset or uncomfortable on purpose had violent consequences" and then answers it

Hmmmmm, teen girls suddenly developing the power of electricity? 👀
Teen girls and women possibly running the world like Beyonce said......👁️‍🗨️👁️‍🗨️😁👏🏽👏🏽
This is The Power on Amazon Prime.
The first 4 episodes were very intriguing. If y'all know me, I will eat up a sci-fi/fantasy show, and a "suddenly the world is different" trope. If you throw in women finding their power and evening the playing field while refusing to be held down any longer AND non-cliché black characters that aren't just for comedic relief or to check a box I am in it till the end.
Let's see what the rest of these episodes look like.
Also Amazon you gotta do better with promo. The limited ads I saw looked boring as hell and didn't hear much chatter on the other social medias. It's like they wanted it to fail. Smh.

Kinda wish "The power" was real so we could have an opportunity to take over the world honestly at least we'd have an advantage of some kind against the cruelty of this patriarchal society yk even the field a bit as of physical strength...that's not a bad idea

I'm glad that Tatiana didn't use electricity to kill her husband, just bludgeoned him to death
because you know, you can actually kill a man, it's not that hard and maybe more women should remember that

I'm enjoying The Power series on Prime enough (I cried at the Saudi women's uprising and the trafficked women's freedom), even if I don't agree with some choices.
With a sudden flip of power, I don't think an entire class of long-oppressed people would immediately adopt the same behaviors and abuses that were done to them. Some women absolutely would get direct vengeance and some would be righteously blinded by the pain men caused them that the entire sex would look like ants to squash to start making things "even". But stuff like suddenly ignoring consent? Nah. I'm of firm belief that women with top societal power would not just become what men are today, like the scenario MRAs scream about and hopefully what Rush Limbaugh is experiencing in Hell. Not over a matter of weeks or months, at least. If at all, that shit would take generations until the way women have been socialized under men completely dies out.
But I do wish the show and the book had a better name. Do you know how many "The Power" titled pieces of media there are? And tagging here is all over the place with the few posts there are. It doesn't help that the phrase is a common general tag we use to compliment any strength.

I read The Power like 6 years ago and was just so much more interested in Roxy's perspective than the others but didn't really think of why and now watching the show, knowing I'm a lesbian, and it's like ah yeah, I just fancied her

I just finished episode 8 of The Power and I have to say I love the choice the show made to have Viktor’s death at Tatiana’s hands not come by means of EOD as I’m sure most of us were expecting (especially after Solongo gave it to her) but instead by being beaten over the head repeatedly with a…. Rather phallic shaped piece of decor. Like. Not only was it a bit of a surprise for the audience, it also says so much about so many things. It shows that Tatiana could have saved herself all along. She had that capability the whole time. And I’m not saying that in a victim blaming way. It’s more…. She didn’t need this magical sci-fi biological weapon to escape the situation she was in. This isn’t something that’s only possible in a fictional world. And while her escape came in a very final and legally inadvisable way, it’s just something that can be so deeply personal, one of those things that just… is rooted so deeply in the collective consciousness of womanhood. That pain and fury at how you’re treated by men in power that builds up over time until it bursts out in one way or another. I can only hope some other woman in Tatiana’s position out there somewhere sees that scene and realizes she has that same capacity to take her life back, whether that means divorce/leaving in whatever fashion, pursuing legal action, or, yes, maybe even Tatiana’s method, though for legal reasons I can’t advise beating your abuser to death with a whatever-the-heck-it-was.
I just really loved that scene. And am incredibly impressed by Tatiana’s acting abilities after the fact, although I do feel for Solongo because…. Yikes

Transgender people in the world of The Power by Naomi Alderman
In a world where women develop organs that let them electrocute people (organs known as "skeins"), it is easy to extend this to imagining artificial skeins and skein removals as an aspect of the surgical part of the transition. Some people would feel dysphoric for having a skein, whereas other people would feel dysphoric for not having a skein.
Patriarchal norms of our world do not disappear in the original story - they only flip around. Testosterone is the controlled substance in our world, not oestrogen, so similar transphobic norms around artificial skeins could easily exist.
I was okay with the fact that transgender people were not in the book. Intersex people were acknowledged, and I think to do transgender people justice you'd have to have another book with a transgender character to give it enough focus. if the TV series has a second season, it would be disappointing if there was no trans character.
I'm an endosex cisgender person, but I'm also gender non-conforming... Maybe if there's a third season, there could be an endosex gender non-conforming character who hates the entire system but knows that their body meets gendered expectations.
Or maybe a genderfluid character...
There are 1,000 different questions that the book raises, and I just had some thoughts about the ones that it doesn't get around to answering.

Look, I’m loving the whole female empowerment thing in The Power, but why did the old rich asshole have to be Jewish? It literally doesn’t add anything to the story (at least as far as the first episode, and unless Roxy’s Jewishness is explored later, which I doubt it will be)
Also the captions calling Hebrew a “foreign language” when they say “Yoruba”? Hmmm…
