The Alibi Girl by C.J. Skuse was not my first book by this author - the honour of that was the fantastic Sweetpea which I re-read for the second time recently, but it was special because it was my first buddy read with the amazing @bitcrackbookclub ⁣ ⁣ It follows a woman called Joanne Haynes - but that isn’t her real name. She has multiple names and identities depending on whom she is with or the mood she is in. She’s been a doctor, a bestselling romance novelist, a chemo patient and pregnant. None of these are true. ⁣ ⁣ As with all the best thrillers, it’s prudent to go into this novel knowing as little as possible and if the paragraph above has whetted your appetite, you’re in for a treat. If you’ve read the infamous Sweetpea, I wouldn’t go into this expecting something similar, it’s really not. However, if unreliable narrators, twists and turns, surprises and unpredictability are your thing, this story has it in spades. ⁣ ⁣ This was also a fantastic book to read as part of a bookclub or buddy read as there are so many moments that just beg to be mulled over and discussed. The author has a real knack for gritty moments and compelling characters where you can’t help but become invested in their story and even feel sorry for them, despite the crazy decisions they make! ⁣ ⁣ I’m really looking forward to whatever @ceejayismeeejay writes next, I’ll certainly be eager to get my hands on it.
