Michigan basketball in 2020: Answering 5 make-or-break questions

Free Press sports writer Orion Sang looks at the five biggest questions facing Michigan basketball: It should be no surprise that Franz Wagner led all players with 26 points on 11-for-18 shooting in Michigan's intrasquad scrimmage Friday. The sophomore wing should be the Wolverines' focal point on offense this season. As a freshman, he averaged 11.6 points and only got better as the season went on. He can get to the basket and score, he rebounds well, he disrupts passing lanes with his length and he generally seems to know where to be on the court. Michigan's ceiling will be dictated by Wagner's improvement between Year 1 and 2. One area of improvement: Outside shooting, as Wagner averaged 31% on 3s last season (a percentage that could have been affected by a fractured right wrist he suffered in October at the dawn of the season). If Wagner can improve his 3-point shooting (he was a very good shooter while playing professional basketball in Germany), he could contend for first team All-Big Ten honors. [Why Michigan basketball's Juwan Howard is the 'can't-miss' coach Wolverines needed ]There's no way to replace Zavier Simpson - especially on offense, where he was the maestro of Michigan's ball-screen attack last season. Simpson's blend of ball-handling, passing and finishing was so unique (remember the sky hooks?) that I'm not sure we'll ever see a player like him again in Ann Arbor. Michigan must find a way to replace his production, as he accounted for 12.9 points and 7.9 assists per game last season. Wagner, Isaiah Livers and Chaundee Brown should be capable scorers. But the Wolverines still need someone to play at Simpson's vacated point guard position. The options include grad transfer guard Mike Smith, who starred at Columbia but is now facing much tougher competition, and Eli Brooks, who mostly played off the ball at shooting guard last winter. Smith and Brooks profile as above average shooters, but will they be able to replicate Simpson's assist rate and run the offense as efficiently as he did?[How Michigan basketball will make up for the loss of former Wolverines star Zavier Simpson ]In the offseason, Michigan bid goodbye to center Jon Teske, who started all 69 games the past two seasons and exhausted his eligibility, and it also lost center Colin Castleton, who transferred to Florida. That leaves the Wolverines with two scholarship big men: Fifth-year senior Austin Davis and freshman Hunter Dickinson. Dickinson is still adjusting to the speed and physicality of college basketball, but Michigan will still need him to play a major role, as he offers high-level passing for a player his size. Davis, last season's backup, will play a lot, too, although there still are questions about whether he can offer thedefense and rim protection Teske provided. The potential X-factor is Brandon Johns Jr., who has mostly played at the 4-position but was given a chance as a small-ball center during the preseason. Playing Johns at center could unlock some unique lineups, with the potential to switch screens and make life difficult for opposing defenses. Michigan's three best players entering the season are Wagner, Livers and Brown, in no particular order. All three have shown they can be good offensive players against Power 5 competition. Yet, no one knows whether they can be as good playing alongside each other. Wagner manned the 3-position last season, and Livers was the 4. When the Wolverines bumped them down a spot in the lineup against Wisconsin (due to Eli Brooks missing the game with an injury), it took a toll on the defense. Part of that was due to Wisconsin's unique three-guard lineup; still, playing Wagner-Livers-Brown at the same timelikely will require at least two of them to guard smaller, quicker players, unless Livers somehow plays as a small-ball center, which is improbable. If all three are on the court next to a conventional center such as Dickinson or Davis, it would leave the Wolverines with just one true guard in the lineup. It'll be fascinating to see...

The story: By 1999, being gay suddenly seemed mainstream. “Will and Grace” was riding high on television. Ellen DeGeneres had silenced the whispers, declaring “Yep, I’m Gay” on the cover of Time magazine. And RuPaul represented M.A.C. Cosmetics.

Not so with weddings, however. In the years before same-sex marriage was legalized, some gay men and women considered weddings to be the ultimate celebration of heterosexuality itself, leading them to feel awkward, and sometimes unwelcome, when invited to a straight couple’s nuptials, argued Bob Morris, a longtime Styles contributor. Indeed, change was a long time coming on the gay marriage front. Just three years before the article appeared, President Bill Clinton had signed into law the Defense of Marriage Act, which defined marriage as “a legal union between one man and one woman as husband and wife.”

New frontiers, old taboos: Progress was not limited to pop culture. Gay rights were advancing in the courts too. The Supreme Court’s Romer v. Evans ruling in 1996 was a landmark gay rights decision that struck down Colorado’s anti-gay amendment.

Even so, gay marriage still seemed like a distant dream, which is why some gay invitees told Mr. Morris that they felt less than welcome at their straight friends’ weddings. As Mr. Morris wrote, weddings represented “that increasingly rare opportunity to feel ashamed, or at least self-conscious.” One gay man interviewed said that “often one of the families doesn’t want you there, so you end up feeling like pariahs.”

That ill-at-ease feeling was even more pronounced at weddings held outside the perceived safe zones of gay-friendly cities like New York or San Francisco. A gay New Yorker recalled a rehearsal dinner at country club in Roanoke, Va., where he and his boyfriend were the only two of about 40 guests who were not assigned seats because “the groom’s mother had panicked at the idea of a gay couple,” he said.

Bump, grind or none of the above? Even when gay couples perceived no overt snubs, many found themselves confused about how open they were allowed to be in this environment of heterosexual abandon. One Manhattan psychiatrist recalled feeling too awkward to dance with his partner at a straight wedding: “Dancing is very ritualistic, and it’s very heavy. You need to know you’re in a safe gay space before you do it.”

Playing a role: To justify their presence, some gay guests felt compelled to fall back on familiar stereotypes: the sharp-eyed style maven, dishing out tips on the bride’s mother’s lipstick, or the campy quipster, eliciting howls of laughter with outré one-liners in wedding speeches. “Weddings are by their nature staid,” one gay male publicist said. “Gay people bring a sense of levity to the event because it’s so irrelevant to our lives.”

Out of the margins: Change came, but slowly. It would be another five years after the article appeared before Massachusetts became the first state to legalize gay marriage. And it took 11 years after that for the Supreme Court to extend that right to all 50 states.

On a personal note: Mr. Morris, the author of the article, saw his own anxieties about weddings dissipate after he married his partner, Ira Silverberg, in California in 2008 after a ruling by the state Supreme Court legalizing same-sex marriage.

“Does cynicism die with inclusion? Maybe,” Mr. Morris said in an interview. “Now, despite some bakers still refusing to provide wedding cakes, and new laws to back them up, we have gays getting married in all kinds of heteronormative ways with all the vendors and services to help them spend their money. I’m not sure, but I would like to think that having your own legal wedding makes you more accepting of the weddings of others, with all the follies and anxieties they uncork.”
