Pursuant to our company’s societal goals of philanthropy, charity and corporate social responsibility (CSR) in general, over the weekend, we participated in an activity in Kabati, Kitui Country organized by the Kenya Veterinary Association. This was part of the culmination of the World Rabies Day celebrations. We did mass rabies vaccination for dogs, donkeys and also did spay & neuter for dogs. During the event, we, as veterinary professionals, made a resounding proclamation to eliminate the RABIES disease from the population by the year 2030. Every 9-MINUTES, a person dies of rabies. I still reiterate the urgent need for human and animal medicine to be pursed in a one United undertaking, a One Health approach because they are inseparably intertwined. HEALTHY ANIMALS MEANS A HEALTHY PEOPLE. As we are entering the holiday season, avoid the following as they are hazardous to pets & can make them very sick:- -Onion family, onions & garlic, whether dry, raw or cooked,is particularly toxic to dogs & can cause gastrointestinal irritation & damages the red blood cells -Chocate - contains a stimulant theobromine which can cause kidney failure -Macadamia Nuts - affects the nervous system of the dog -Artificial sweetener, xylitol containing substances. Can cause hypoglycemia, liver failure & even blood clotting disorders -Alcohol - causes intoxication, diarrhoea, even CNS damage -Grapes & raisins can cause liver & kidney failure -Avocado -persin in the leaves of avocado can cause diarrhoea & vomiting in dogs -Cannabis (marijuana)- a small amount of cannabis can cause toxicity in cats & dogs as they have more cannabinoid receptors in their brains than humans.
