How Hating Alison Ashley Was A Seminal Film For Me
It Is Realistic
Unlike many films made for young adults, the way the teenage characters spoke to each other was actually realistic (well, for people who live in Australia). The way the actors and actresses deliver such lines as "you so want me", "whatever...", "- one's a complete cow..." with such realistic tones make the film not daggy at all. It feels like I am back in school hearing real banter.
Erica Yurkin: Fashion Icon
Tumblr media
As a pre-teen, I tried to replicate Erica's small subtle fashion choices. I made a necklace inspired by her goldfish badge out of a small orange rubber hippo (that was randomly included in a scrap booking kit, which I am sure to this day it wasn't meant to be). I also found a heap of plastic sparkly bangles which weren't rubber but in my imagination, they worked. I also wound up with a stripey long sleeve shirt that was very similar to hers, which really made my outfit.
Also, because Miss Lattimore had a nose piercing which I was obsessed with and always wanted one. But my nose is too sticky-outty and now I just wish I had her nose so I could pull off a nose ring.
Her Teacher Miss Belmont Was Awesome
God, I yearned for a teacher like Miss Belmont. In Grade 9, I tried to manifest a new teacher into being like her. I even told her how I like that she "crushes us like little bugs". She left at the end of the year when I needed her the most.
Belmont had style (somewhere between part time dominatrix and a Vintage fan). She had attitude. She had hilarious lines and delivery. This was literally the first time I had seen Jean Kittson in something and I have always admired her ever since.

Her House Is Too Real
If I walk 2 minutes down my street, I will have seen like an entire block full of the same variation of house (although only 1 or 2 will be as filthy).
Australian architecture hasn't changed much since the Gold Rush. Sure, people try to get fancy but the main design is always the same and with a veranda or porch.

At Some Point, I Wanted To Be Her Older Sister Valjoy
"Where do you think you're going, dressed like that?" "Hmmm, let me think... OUT!"

I Have Always Wished To See Erica's Play In Full
The set design, costumes and having real actors play school kids do amateur theatre just makes me so happy.

The Soundtrack Was A Holy Grail Item For Me
It was one of those things I kept trolling eBay for for many years until I found it.
The soundtrack featured many Aussie bands and singers I that never knew, had a few American exports such as Hilary Duff and Eels, included very early Gabriella Cilmi songs before everyone knew her name, lots of songs I only ever heard on the film and never again plus the single was sung by the very elusive Amiel.
For Whatever Reason, I Kept Noticing This Girl In Most Scenes
I guess I liked her style, or she was just part of my bisexual awakening. Who friggin' knows. I just noticed her all the time. She was always bored or surly and that was cool to me.
If she sees this, I am really sorry about the screenshots.

Lastly, Lezbehonest: Hating Alison Ashley Coulda Just Been a Queer Story
Erica is a bit too obsessed with Ashley. She knows nothing about her and she creates this entire scenario in her head about how Ashley is a manipulative little troll and yet she takes every opportunity to be around her.
And her intensity at the end of the film when she lends Lenny's phone to Ash so she can notify her shitty rich parents that she is going to sleep over at Yuck's house... She wants to snuggle hardcore.
It is just another film (yes I am aware that it is adapted from the book that I never read) where they could had been lesbian and it wouldn't have changed anything about the story (*cough cough* Bend It Like Beckham).
