How did you get to be a professor if you don't mind me asking? I'm thinking about going into academia, but it's so hard to find anything on how to do it :(

full disclosure, not a professor (though working on it)! I have a master’s degree and am working as a teaching fellow while i complete my PhD-- i do #professor stuff, such as teach my own classes, but at about...30% of the pay. grad student labor is a whole ‘nother can of worms that you probably didn’t sign up for, but i’m happy to talk about that privately if you ever want to send me a message. (spoiler: pretty shitty)

this got long, so under a cut it goes:

for me, personally, i pretty much stumbled into it. i was a shit student in undergrad (1 academic suspension, 3 academic probation periods, 6.5 years to graduate with my bachelor’s), and didn’t know why i was there. changed my major like. 5? 6?? times. i hated university and didn’t want to go back to it.

but then i also didn’t really have a good enough GPA or experience for any of the jobs i wanted, and i was tired of working 3-4 retail positions simultaneously. after being broke for a while (stealing toilet paper and only eating eggs & ramen broke) and feeling real shitty in my life, i sobered up (that’s another line of conversation i’m happy to have privately), and was fortunate enough to have a great mentor who pretty much shoved me into grad school.

grad school was so much better than undergrad ever was. like, SO MUCH BETTER (im happy to talk more about that too). i fast tracked through my MA and applied for a PHD program in a related but different field (should also note that while all three of my degrees are humanities degrees, they’re in different disciplines and you should totally not feel married to whatever your previous degree was in if you want to try something new), got funding for 5 years, and moved across the country.

for getting into both a master’s and doctorate program, i really want to stress the importance of talking to professors. im super fucking introverted, with social anxiety on top of it, but if i didn’t have that support system i wouldn’t have gotten through.

in terms of getting into academia, it depends on what it is you want to do, what field you want to be in, and what country you’re attending university in. in my discipline (humanities-based, in the united states trajectory usually follows a timeline like this:

master’s program. ~2 years if going full time. usually working as a teaching / research assistant (you help a professor teach a class or do a research project) or as a graduate instructor (you teach the class). pay comes in what’s called a stipend, or a fixed wage for the time you are working/attending the program. the amounts vary, but they’re typically Not Great. (mine was 10k/year, with NO paychecks in the summer. living that dream).

if being employed by the university, you’ll usually be taking 3-4 classes a semester and teaching 1-2 sections of an intro course in your field. there are alternatives to that, such as working in a lab, TAing for a higher-level course, writing center/tutoring work, etc. but that’s the Gist. i was a graduate instructor, teaching one class a semester and taking 3 classes. i moonlighted at other jobs because that wasn’t a liveable wage for the bills i had, but that’s usually discouraged.

you can work in academia and have the master’s be your terminal degree, but to keep going:

phd. ~4-7 years. about 1-3 years in coursework (meaning you’re still attending classes), 2-3 years-ish for comprehensive exams and writing the dissertation. ultimately, these numbers mean nothing because there’s no consistency in how fast people get done with the dissertation in my experience. this also assumes full-time student status (as opposed to part-time). again, happy to talk more on this subject if there’s specific questions

assistant professor. 5-6ish years, hopefully. this means you (usually) have a tenure track position, but no tenure. after roughly five years, the university reviews you for tenure and essentially decides if they want you to keep your job (people are denied tenure. which means you’re back on that job market)

associate professor. 6 to infinity years. tenured! most people stop here (or are unable to move past here because of bullshit systematic promotion practices)

full professor. same as associate, but with more $ and admin power
