CREATION the angel was made by god himself and he is a part of the first generation of angels that followed the archangels lucifer, michael, gabriel and raphael. it makes him older than many creatures in this universe and he had the “privilege” to be one of his father’s favorites for a long time. it was the reason why he was trusted with one of the first missions on planet earth, accompanied by his better half and best friend, pinniki.
VISITING EARTH was something that was feared by many angels while others were eager to see the new realm their father created. cosimo himself felt indifferent about it, but he was eager to please god and show him that his faith in him was nothing but justified. for a long time, he was nothing but a perfect little solider, but things were about to change when pik and him were tasked with the destruction of a nephilim. instead of ending the child’s existence, both angels raised them for a long time, but god was displeased with their choices and their lack of obedience. his better half was ordered to return to heaven and it would take a very long time for the two of them to find each other again.
FINDING HIS TRUE VESSEL after countless missions, cosimo finally located his one true vessel. the human body that was made for him, meant to last forever. it wasn’t hard to convince the young man to say yes to the angelic possession, but there was something else that made cosimo feel guilty: the man’s family. he could feel that his vessel was really close to his twin sister, camilla. he planned on giving them a few more days together, but within moments of staying around, cosimo felt something that he never experienced in his entire existence. he grew attached to the blonde and with it came a possessiveness that he never felt before either. it was impossible for him to lie to her and so he finally came clean about her twin’s fate, hoping that it would help her accept everything that happened. what he did not expect was for the attachment to be mutual. camilla refused to leave his side and by now, it no longer matters that they were not born as twins. she is his twin sister and cosimo loves her with all of his heart.
BECOMING CROWN PRINCE OF ITALY was not something that he planned on when he encountered teresa de’ medici. the queen was desperate: the king and her tried everything to conceive children for so long, but it just would not happen. their kingdom began to talk and she feared for her life, so when she noticed the resemblance between herself and the twins, she begged cosimo for his help. she would introduce them as their children, claiming that they were hidden away for their safety, and announcing that cosimo de’ medici was the rightful heir to the throne.  he was hesitant at first: his acceptance would have an impact on the development of history and his father would not be pleased, but he finally agreed, unable to turn teresa down. camilla and him moved to italy and he took his place as crown prince.
ENDING AN OLD BLOOD FEUD months after his arrival in italy he came across a rarity. another supernatural being, a dragon, that went by the name of illyria pazzi. her story was much like cosimo’s: the pazzi family found and adopted her and there was an instant fascination between the two of them. their families, which had been enemies for quite some time, saw that they spent time together and they started to see it as an opportunity to end the bad blood between them. illyria and cosimo were asked to marry. again, there was lots of hesitance, but they finally agreed. why not? they were interested in each other, there was attraction. they would not have to live on without each other, since they were immortal. perhaps marriage would not be so bad and if it helped teresa and the house of medici, cosimo was willing to do it. a beautiful ceremony took place, making the dragon and the angel man and wife. a fact that only let his father’s anger grow.
FALLING IN LOVE while angels are not supposed to feel, he tried everything in his power to let himself feel. he wanted the full experience, but unfortunately, it did not happen with his wife. illyria and him still had their attraction to each other and their physical interactions were passionate. he cared for her, deeply, but it did not go past that. instead of loving her, he did something he knows he should not have done. when illyria moved into the castle, it was impossible not to notice one of her ladies in waiting: anastasia. she was nothing like the rest of them. she was wild and spirited, constantly leaving smiles on the prince’s face, even if he tried to hide them. it only took so long before they began to interact and soon enough, their conversations turned into a heated affair. in order to protect anastasia’s reputation, he made her his official mistress, even though he knew it would hurt illyria’s feelings. he was too consumed by ana and it was not just lust. he was slowly falling in love with her and their love was crowned when his mistress told him that she was pregnant with his child.
RETURNING TO HEAVEN at this point, cosimo was ready to take a step back to focus on anastasia and their child. in the past years, teresa managed to have children of her own. the medicis reign seemed secure, he held up the end of his bargain and when his first daughter, aurora, was born that was all that he wanted to be: her father. but things got delayed when teresa became ill. a reaper showed to warn cosimo. this was his father’s punishment for creating a nephilim and her soul would be denied entrance to heaven. infuriated by the thought, the angel warned camilla and anastasia that he would have to return to speak to his creator, but things were not supposed to work out the way he wanted them to. teresa’s soul did go to heaven, but his father’s punishment was severe. in his absence, aurora was destroyed. anastasia and camilla sacrificed their humanity and turned into demons, while ana took her own life to be with their daughter. illyria faked her own death to punish cosimo and god took their memories of aurora and anastasia, leaving him with nothing as he finally made his way back to earth.
BEING BANISHED FROM HEAVEN was not the worst thing in the world. he never relied on heaven’s forces to sustain himself and after his return, he tried to handle the mess in italy, staying there for a long, long time to guide and protect the house of medici, since he felt like he failed his job the first time. he stepped back from his position as crown prince, living his life in the shadows, always feeling like something was missing. it felt like he lost everything, except for camilla, and it only strengthened their bond. he tried to convince himself it was all he needed and it took centuries before they managed to remember what they lost, breaking through god’s spell.
DEFEATING THE EMPTY there is one resting place for celestial and demonic beings. just one. the empty. a place where souls are supposed to slumber for the rest of eternity. a peaceful thought to some, but when cosimo finally remembered his wife and his daughter he refused to let them stay there. cosimo cannot count the sleepless nights that he spent planning their recovery from the empty and it took a great amount of power that would weaken him for months to follow, but he managed to retrieve their souls, resurrecting both the love of his life as well as his firstborn.
RETURNING TO ITALY was the only thing that really made sense to cosimo after they reunited. with illyria long gone, the two of them finally married and after months spent together, their second daughter, leilani, was on their way to them. cosimo knew about the risks, but he promised himself to protect his babies with everything that he has. to send god a warning, he tracked the angel that destroyed aurora and anastasia, camilla and him had their revenge in ways that should not be described.
THE SEELIE REALM was not on the list of places that cosimo wanted to visit, especially not while his wife is pregnant with their third child, liam. he does not care about the feud between the clave and the downworlders, as harsh as it sounds. both sides are making mistakes and he believes that they should be able to handle things better, so he built himself a residence, hidden away in the woods, to keep his family as safe as possible.

Tumblr content school: why you don’t always get notes and how to (potentially) get a bit more
So in recent weeks, I’ve seen quite a few posts floating around that centre around the same subject: content creators, mainly gifmakers, not gaining followers as quickly as they would like to and/or not getting as many notes on their original content as they would like to. Most recently I’ve seen people share their like-to-reblog ratio, with a call to users to also reblog content instead of just liking it, which would result in more exposure and recognition for the creator.
Now, while all of those feelings are perfectly valid and you’re obviously allowed to post whatever you like on your blog, the conversation around this is quite unnuanced and, at times, a bit uninformed. I’m not claiming to be some kind of expert, but having been a content creator (gifmaker) on this platform for quite a few years, with my own small share of popular gifsets floating around and having built both my own blog an two fansites/group blogs to at least moderate success, I do think I have a certain degree of insight re: getting notes, so I thought I’d put in my two cents. Please note that I’m not making this post to be condescending in any way, or even to tell you what to do/how to create content, but I thought I’d help as much as I can, based on my own experience.
Below the cut are 1. reasons why I think gifsets don’t always get the number of notes you wanted/expected them to, and 2. tips on creating and posting content in a way that will potentially get you more notes.
Why you might not be getting (a lot) of notes
So let’s start with some general trends re: gifsets not getting as many notes as you’d like/expect, and not as many as they would have maybe a few years ago.
1. Tumblr is past its peak
Based on experience, I’d say fandom Tumblr reached its peak in 2015-2016, and was riding that out in 2017. I’ve mainly been a Marvel blog in recent years, so I can’t speak for other fandoms, but Tumblr was... wild in the lead-up to and aftermath of Captain America: Civil War (2016). Wonder Woman (2017) was a similar situation on the DC side of things.
New Marvel releases (like Ant-Man & The Wasp, Avengers: Infinity War and probably most notably, Black Panther) still get a lot of traction and fandom definitely isn’t dead on Tumblr, but I feel like 2015-2016 were definitely peak years. I only recently returned from a year-long hiatus; I stopped being active in late 2017 and even then my dashboard wasn’t quite as active as it was a year before that. Upon returning here about a month ago, most of my mutuals from back in the day had also become inactive and a lot of gifmakers I used to follow were not creating content anymore.
So it boils down to this: I think it’s very likely that the amount of active users within your fandom has diminished significantly as compared to two years ago. A set that may have gotten 10k notes within a few days in 2016 might now only get half of that.
2. The URL thing
This is a sad truth, but it does seem that having a semi-canon or canon url does at least help with getting a larger amount of notes on your content. I have no tips on getting a canon url (I got very, very lucky with this one), but this is a simple observation I have from over the years. Url trading/selling has basically become a genuine business due to this - canon urls are in high demand.
More importantly, what I can say is that it’s smart not to change your url too often. Becoming a popular content creator on this platform is basically the same as building a brand - and a brand has an easily recognized name. Once you have a url you are happy with, try to stick to it for a while. When you change your url, links break on reblogs of your old gifsets, by the way.
3. The like-to-reblog ratio has always been unbalanced
For as long as I can remember, posts have gotten more likes than reblogs. If your ratio is 2-to-1 or 3-to-1, trust me, you are doing perfectly well for yourself! Again, as with my first point, this might have gotten a bit more extreme since 2016, but it’s not a new thing.
4. Popular users support each other
Obviously there’s nothing wrong with this (in fact, I love that we all support each other), but yes, in general big/popular blogs are friends with each other and tend to reblog each other’s content, which can be discouraging for smaller or aspiring content creators on the platform.
However, please be aware that these big blogs built up the following they have by posting content for years and it just takes time. Also, know that most users on here actually really enjoy being tagged in your posts - so if you gif a movie or tv show you know a popular user (that you follow) likes, tag them in it and if it’s high quality content (I’ll touch on this later), they’ll probably reblog it.
Tips on getting more notes
Alright, on to part two: my personal tips on getting more notes. These are strictly based on my own experience, and as a repeat of my disclaimer earlier: I am genuinely trying to share my knowledge; none of this is with the intent of being a condescending know-it-all.
1. Don’t look like you’re complaining
No matter what the intent behind your post about your lack of notes and/or followers is, it’s very likely you’re going to come off entitled or ungrateful. I’ve personally unfollowed multiple users who post consistently about reaching their next thousand, who make angry/frustrated posts when their followers don’t increase as quickly as they’d like to, when they lose followers, etc. I understand that the hustle is frustrating, but posts like these are really quite annoying for your followers; you’re complaining about followers you don’t have to followers you do have, who are then more likely to unfollow you because it looks like you’re complaining. Your mutuals might understand why you’re posting this, but others probably don’t.
When it comes to posts about like-to-reblog ratios, which I’ve seen a fair few of recently, please consider a couple of things.
When you ask people to reblog your post instead of liking it, you are essentially telling them what to put on their own blogs.
A lot of users on here have carefully curated content; while some users simply blog about everything they like, others stick to a certain set of subjects/movies/tv shows. If they see a post they like that doesn’t fall into those categories, they’ll give it a like to keep track of it and show their appreciation, but won’t put it on their blogs. You can’t tell people to reblog something they don’t want to.
You’re essentially asking people that you do not really personally care about to do something for you. Most of the likes you get on your post are likely from people that you do not follow yourself. I’m not saying that you hate your followers or don’t care for them, but you can’t really ask anything of a user that you don’t even follow yourself.
Look at it this way: Tumblr is basically a mini society, with its own market in the form of content creation. The ones who have a few thousand followers, and who get a few hundred or a few thousand notes on their posts are already the lucky ones. If you’re a user who gets hundreds/thousands of notes on their posts (even if it’s not as many as you like or deserve), you should keep in mind that the vast majority of users on here are small blogs that don’t have the traction that you have. If you post a screenshot of the like-to-reblog ratio on a post that has 2k notes, they’re going to think, “what on earth are you complaining about?”
Posts like these can really only backfire. I don’t think it’s likely that a lot of users will suddenly start reblogging instead of liking because of them. I know those posts are getting traction, because your mutuals and fellow content creators understand your frustration (believe me, I do too!), so they reblog/like/comment on it, but you’re essentially in an echo chamber of content creators. Anyone outside of that circle will not understand it and might unfollow you because of it.
2. Quality
Another disclaimer: I’m not implying that the people who have made posts about notes/followers don’t make HQ gifs. This is simply the “tips on getting notes” section of this particular post, so that’s what I’m doing. Veteran gifmakers can skip this section because I won’t be presenting anything new here.
Here’s the thing: high quality gifsets get notes. I know that what constitutes a HQ gif is subjective, but there is a consensus on this amongst big blogs, so I will summarize it below.
Make gifs from high-quality video sources. If 1080p is available, use that. Don’t gif from videos below 720p. Also, the larger the t*rr*nt file, the higher the quality. If a 1080p t*rr*nt from a movie is under 2GB in size, it’s probably not decent enough to gif from.
Use the new dimensions. Tumblr changed from 500px to 540px over 3 years ago now I believe, and all the big blogs use these dimensions. I rarely see sets like this anymore, but some users do still hold on to the old dimensions. Obviously, you should do what you like, but know that you’ll get more notes if you make the switch.
Do not skip frames. If you use screencaps, extract 25 frames per second. If you are an ‘Import video frames to layers’ kinda gal, like me, import all frames.
Sharpen your gifs! It makes an insane difference. My faq section links to a sharpening action.
Your frame delay should be 0.05. If you have a low amount of frames, you can get away with 0.06, but do not make your gif any slower than that. It will look unsmooth.
Go for natural coloring, where you simply brighten up the gif and enhance the colors (beware of whitewashing tho). I know that using PSD’s from resource blogs is tempting, but it’s very likely they will not work for the particular scene you’re giffing. It’s best if you learn to color yourself and adapt your coloring for every set. Also, it’s up to you what you think is pretty, but extremely vibrant and extremely pale coloring isn’t very popular anymore. Natural is the way to go. (This is with the exception of those gorgeous color edits people have been making recently. Y’all are queens & that shit is hard to make yo!)
If your gif is larger than the 3mb limit, NEVER sacrifice colors in the ‘Save for web’ window. Always delete frames to lower the size of your gif.
Just saying, but Photoshop CS5 has been known to make the best gifs.
For beginners out there, please don’t be discouraged. I’ve been making gifs for years, and they were absolute shit in the beginning. It just takes time to learn, but if you stick to it, you’ll get there.
3. Concept over quantity
Allow me to draw a comparison with YouTubers here - I think we all prefer YouTubers who post one well fleshed out video a week (for example, Safiya Nygaard) over YouTubers who post an okay video every day.
I think a lot of users think the way to get notes and followers is to post a gifset every day. This probably does work to an extent, but I personally think it’s better to come up with original concepts that you post every few days.
When you watch a movie, you can make five gifsets out of scenes from that movie, or you can come up with a concept. For example, parallels between scenes, parallels with other movies, the best lines of a certain character, etc. This takes more work, but sets like these are highly appreciated because they’re original, and they tend to get more notes.
This doesn’t apply to new releases, as you are probably among the first to gif a particular scene, but if you’re giffing a scene from a movie that’s been out for a while, you’re very likely not the first to do it. People will see it, realize they’ve already reblogged something very similar, and keep scrolling. But if you come up with a new idea, that’s what’ll get you more traction.
To give you a personal example; I recently rewatched all of the cap films. Now, I could have giffed popular scenes like “I could do this all day” or “I’m with you ‘til the end of the line”, but that’s been done before... a lot. Instead, I came up with this, and got 6.5k notes. I haven’t posted that many new sets on my blog recently, but posting content like that has gained me some followers and new mutuals.
4. Timing
All this requires is keeping an eye on your dashboard and taking note of when most of the people you follow are online. I sometimes see European content creators posting their sets smack dab in the middle of the day. Lemme tell y’all something: the Americans are sleeping.
I’m in timezone GMT+1. My dash wakes up around 5pm. I never post before 6pm - I’ll post anywhere between then and midnight, so feel free to convert that to your own timezone. The scheduling feature on posts comes in handy if you’ll be asleep or at school/work around that time.
If you post when Tumblr isn’t active, your set will drown in all of the other content, so be smart about timing.
5. Strategic tagging
It seems that a lot of users still don’t know this: only the first five tags on your post show up in tags on Tumblr. Anything past the first five will only be useful for your own tagging/archiving system, but will not show up in any tracked tags.
So first point: always use the most prominent edit tag for the fandom you’re posting in. Examples are #marveledit, #hpedit, #filmedit. These are frequently used, and often tracked by big blogs.
Second point: figure out who the big fansites/group blogs are, and if they track a tag, tag them. Make sure you follow them, obviously. If your post is funny, you might wanna tag bob-belcher (#bbelcher) as well - this blog is popular across fandoms and posts content from all over!
Third: tag users who you think will like your post. Don’t be thirsty with this. Again, only do this if you follow them. Tagging 2-3 users is ok, but don’t be out there tagging 8 to 10 blogs on your post. Not only is that a little pointless (because only the first five tags will show up), it also makes you look thirsty. Users might not appreciate this, and ultimately might not reblog your post because of that. Also, try not to tag the same users on every single one of your posts.
6. Popular content
If your fandom is niche, so is your content. That’s perfectly fine; don’t feel pressured to post about anything that isn’t your passion.
But if your goal really is to get more notes and followers, create content from fandoms that are big on the platform. Examples are Marvel, Harry Potter, Star Wars, film blogs, etc.
7. Join a fansite/group blog
Every big fandom on Tumblr has one or multiple fansites/group blogs. I recommend you figure out who they are for your fandom, and apply to one that’s accepting new members. You’ll likely get in if your gifs are HQ.
I know this sounds a bit counterintuitive, as you’ll be posting content on another blog that will be getting the notes and followers from it, but it actually is a good way to gain more exposure. These blogs have large amounts of followers, and they usually allow you to reblog your own content to them, as long as you’re active. I think it’s a great way to get your content out there.
Alright, time to wrap up this post. I’m not personally calling out anyone who has made posts about followers, notes, like-to-reblog ratios, etc. I’ve seen at least 15 of those posts in recent weeks so I’m just reacting to a trend I’m seeing, by presenting a potential solution to a problem people seem to be having.
My last tip is this: if notes and followers on Tumblr are making you feel down or frustrated, maybe it’s time for a little hiatus or a step back. In the end, you are not getting paid for this and your popularity on the platform has no bearing on your real life. This is supposed to be a fun outlet for your passions and interests, not a source of frustration and anger. Don’t take it too seriously! You’re doing amazing sweetie.

[4:59 PM] Kat: @everyone Here's soemthing entertaining to look at while waiting for the dires: #T H I C C
Tumblr media
[5:08 PM] Kat: @everyone Here's yet another reminder to folks to please, seriously, stop messaging me to ask when the dires are going to be out. I legit already posted it in announcements. I'm on the edge of being nice, and am coming dangerously close to telling people to just outright fuck off and relax so I can get this thing done before the end of the year because every minute I spend explaining to every individual who IMs me, is a minute I could be finishing the avatar. If you want a refund because of the delay, that's fine. I'll honor it before the launch. Just please relax for a couple more days. I am literally doing what I can without pushing myself too far and the added stress of all the IMS is NOT helping my mental state.
[5:08 PM] Kat: I love you all, seriously. but CHILLLLL [5:10 PM] Kat: I get it. I pushed these too early. I fucked up, Okay? [5:12 PM] Kat: @everyone also Iming me to give your support and understanding also helps less than you think. The best thing you guys can do for the moment is just.. go play a game, binge a show, or even go rub one out. anything is better than nuking my notifications right now. Please.

DEC 29, 2018
[10:45 PM] Kat: @everyone So, the moment we've all been waiting for. The Direwolves have officially entered Internal beta. Scary, I know, considering I have until tommorrow night to squash any world ending bugs, but, bear with me and please understand that this avatar will not be flawless right out the gate. There are some known, documented issues that will be addressed once I've returned from my trip, but so far 95% of the avatar's features are working as intended.  However, a couple of small features are being delayed in the interest of getting the avatar out into the hands of those who've been so patiently waiting, the features in question being only stuff relating to the AO. At launch, the Direwolf will not have its idle animations, half of the planned 'actions' are still WIP, and the only currently included dance animation leaves something to be desired. But, I hope you will all still enjoy what Stickman and I have created. Once its passed testing and I've confirmed its well off enough to go out into the wild, I'll have flame issue the redelivery tomorrow afternooon-ish. I'll let you all know when I'll be available to process refunds, exchanges and devkit signups. Thank you.
[10:54 PM] Kat: @everyone I know there will be a fair number of you who will not like the news that the Direwolf, despite being under development for 2 additional months beyond its original proposed release date, is essentially releasing unfinished,  but.. I have no excuse. Please just.. Be patient. As with ALL KZK products, future updates WILL be free, and the first thing I'm doing upon returning from my trip will be taking a day to recover from traveling/convention, then immediately focusing on patching in the missing animations/features where possible, as well as squashing any known bugs. then I'll be prepping the preorder plush gift, available only to those who purchased a Direwolf on or before december 30th, and lastly, setting up the two freebie gift skins (as thanks!).
_____
DEC 30, 2018
[3:03 PM] Kat: @everyone Testing is going well. the last few major issues were resolved this morning! I will be doing my best to handle and refunds/exchanges/dev kit orders tonight. All that's really left is making sure everything's properly configured out of the box, and checking permissions. Thank you all for your patience, you've been incredible. I only hope you enjoy this avatar as much as I've enjoyed creating it.
[3:06 PM] Kat: @everyone and in the event that Im unable to help you tonight with exchanges/refunds, I will honor them up through January 20th, same with the devkit discount. This has been a rough launch, so I want to make sure I can make as many people happy as I can. I do expect some to game the system, and if you're one of those people, shame on you, but I know most folks are honest. I'll keep you guys up to date.
[3:07 PM] Kat: This release has been a sobering experience in many ways. Lots of lessons to learn. Lots of compromises to be made. Next time I do something like this, refunds/exchanges will be far less likely since I'll have made sure folks are more properly armed with the knowledge to make the correct purchase.
[9:19 PM] Kat: @everyone The Direwolf's gone GOLD! That's right, its boxed, its ready to go, but as these sorts of things go, Flame's the one who has to flip the switch (as I don't have the command for the database to force a redelivery).  And don't bother nuking the terminals because the newest assets aren't in the server yet. I will let you all know! SO! This means I'm available to process devkit orders, exchanges, and, if folks still want them, refunds. Feel free to drop me an IM inworld, or here in Discord, AND, if you're wanting the Dev kit (not PSDs), this is the contract you will want to read and review fully, as it is LEGALLY BINDING. You will need an active google drive to get access to the dev kit files(and those who already have the devkit should hopefully see the full devkit pushed tonight.) https://drive.google.com/open?id=17EijMp046_UUO-dsqDvj77rJb8Msf8aMiB2cbLvemTI (the contract. Please make sure I've spoken to you personally before sending me a signed copy. Signing can be done via photoshop and a tablet, or by printing the document and signing where needed.)
10:05 PM] Kat: @everyone Working my way slowly through the list of names in my sidebar, thank you all for your patience.
10:49 PM] Kat: @everyone So, looks like flame's in bed. To be faaaair, i didn't exactly have the chance to coordinate this with him, SO, i'm going to quickly fix a minor issue  with the HUD (visual, nothing too bad), pack up the fixed HUDS, and drop everything in the server and just.. see how it goes. Rofl'' Please wait until I give the word. mk?
11:39 PM] Kat: @everyone Well, since I yet again didn't plan things right (When do I ever  ) I've gone ahead and replaced the items in the server with their final versions. So, new purchases will deliver the correct items, and using the PURPLE redelivery terminal will send you an updated box. Also, dev kit owners, if you check your Drives, your Devkit beta v02 files have been updated to v1, and includes all 3 sizes and an updated set of PSDs that include shading for the bottoms of the feeth, the mouth, hands and inside the ears.

12:17 AM] Kat: @everyone For the devkit folks, the Applier script will be made available tomorrow morning. Apologies for the delays!
2:38 AM] Kat: @everyone Devkit owners, a small update has been made to the kit. Included now is the applier script. Usage instructions are inside it. Also, the Direwolf Overview Document (linked in the devkit readme) now includes information for scaling.
5:20 PM] Kat: @everyone so I was up very late last night(7 am) working on last minute costume stuff for the trip, and I still had a lot to do when I got up this morning so I was not able to get into sl to handle any last minute help requests. I'll do my best to help where I can as my fiance brought her laptop but it can barely run sl on potato graphics. I'll try and arrange to have the applied script passed out in the main store. Also as a reminder I will be honoring any exchange requests until january 20th as i am going to be out of town until the 10th and theres only so much I can do on the go. Had i planned things better, the fires would've come out long before this trip but.. at this point i decided it would be better to arrive late to the party than not at all so i will do everything i can to make sure it gets the TLC it needs when i return. Sorry if this sounds rambly.. I slept 2 and a half hours last night before packing for my flight.. 3 hour drive to the airport and a 3 hour flight.  But hey, well be landing around midnight so well get to see fireworks from the air!

12:48 AM] Kat: @everyone landed safe and sound in Virginia.  Been catching up on chat. Just want to remind people to read the documentation notecard for the direwolf as it makes mention of known issues, INCLUDING the animation problems for the medium and small.

[12:18 PM] Kat: @everyone by way of @Stickman " If anyone needs to use a texture applier for the Dire Wolf that has specular and normals, this script will work. Rather than putting it in a box, however, it needs to be placed in every attachment (eg, head, ear, neck, torso, arms, etc). Further instructions are contained within. https://pastebin.com/ALPEchgK "

Hey - Pat from StarterStory.com here with another interview.Today's interview is with Krystian Frencel (u/bunchofanimals) of Bunch of Animals, a brand that makes men's boxer briefsSome stats:Product: men's boxer briefsRevenue/mo: $5,000Started: October 2018Location: TorontoFounders: 1Employees: 0Hello! Who are you and what business did you start?Hello, my name is Krystian Frencel, and I’m the founder of Bunch of Animals, a men’s luxury underwear brand, AKA, the Bentley of banana hammocks. I’m also the co-founder of a Toronto based design and development studio, 3magine. I don’t have previous e-commerce experience and have never been involved in creating a physical product. I have wanted to combine my experience in web design/development with creating a physical product and learning e-commerce for some time now.And so, I created the world’s softest underwear.Softer than Katy Perry’s lips, two-hand touch football and Charmin Ultra Soft tissues.“Best underpants I've ever owned and feels like nothing at all.”“The softest underwear I've ever worn and it felt like wearing nothing at all. LOVE the print!”“OMG, I LOVE these..... Thank you so much... Did I order any more? I want more... :)”“It feels like wearing air. High altitude air.”Our flagship products are softer than soft men’s boxer briefs featuring beautiful, seamless designs created in collaboration with artists from around the world.I launched the brand in November 2018 and man, what a ride it’s been 😂Current sales are about $5,000/mo, with 500+ customers and an AOV of $52 (2 pairs)Let’s start at the very beginning.imageWhat's your backstory and how did you come up with the idea?In late 2014, I came across a very unique underwear brand from Australia, Stonemen Underwear. I think I found them on Instagram. What really drew me to the underwear were the seamless prints which looked like pieces of art sprawling across like a painting on a canvas. The prints continued without interruption across the front stitch lines such that when you were looking at the underwear from the front or the back you’d be seeing a beautiful piece of art, uninterrupted.Check out the picture below for what continuity in the design through stitch lines looks like.imageYou see, most men’s underwear (be it a brief, trunk or boxer-brief) is made up of two pieces of fabric stitched together to form the underwear. The two pieces are cut out from random locations of a fully printed sheet of fabric and sewn together. This means the prints will never line up. But Stonemen’s prints did line up. And they looked good!Wild horses running across the steppe, mountainous landscapes right out of a painting or some really wild illustrations. I have to say I was blown away a little bit. I’ve never seen anything like this before.Naturally, I had to have them and placed an order for two pairs of briefs (at that time I was strictly a grape smugglers kind of guy) with two prints I really liked. The underwear turned out to be a bit on the expensive side. $65 a pair after shipping, taxes and duties. It ended up taking about a month for it to arrive (I’m making this up. I don’t remember how long it took. It was 2014 man. You probably don’t remember what you had for breakfast last Tuesday). But when I finally got them I was excited. The prints were really nice! The fabric was soft. I put them on and thought to myself, “Damn!”. I was a bit into working out back then, so you know, I looked ok. I’d pause in front of the mirror for a bit longer than usual. Not gonna lie.I loved the way they looked but more so I loved the way they made me feel. I genuinely felt better about myself because of the underwear I was wearing. What a concept. Better underwear. Better self-esteem.It turned out I wasn’t the only one who loved the underwear. You see, 2014 was also the year my ex-wife and I separated. Probably the hardest part of my life to get through. I was dating again and whenever a lucky lady got me down to my underpants, I saw those eyes light up 😂But really, they would often give me the nicest compliments about the underwear. That made me feel really good. I think women get compliments way more than men do. When was the last time you were told that you looked like the sexy beast that you are?Naturally I wanted more. More of this kind of underwear. More compliments. The thing was, I only liked a few of the Stonemen prints. The underwear itself was quite expensive and shipping from Australia to Canada took too long. So I started searching for other printed underwear brands and came across two; PSD Underwear and MeUndies. At the time PSD was only making polyester underwear and my nuts are too bouji for that. Yours are too. Believe me. MeUndies was using MicroModal, a fabric I’ve never heard about but I wasn’t really a fan of the prints so I passed on them as well. The MeUndies prints were also not seamless. But I really wanted more printed underwear! So I decided to try and make my own.Take us through the process of designing, prototyping, and manufacturing your first product.I started by deconstructing, AKA pulling out the stitches from a pair of the Stonemen briefs. Created a paper form of the two pieces that made up the brief, and had it digitized.I also connected with a graphic designer who helped set artwork into the digitized template and made it match at the edges for a beautiful seamless print.imageI started researching different types of fabrics and their respective printing methods. Printing on cotton was called Direct To Garment (DTG). Printing on Polyester was via Sublimation. Polyester prints look cheap and the fabric itself doesn’t feel all that great on your body. So I decided to try my luck with cotton. This is what Stonemen used and at this point I have not yet touched MicroModal. That’s like never having tried whatever the most incredible dish you’ve ever had the pleasure of sinking your teeth into. If you’re a vegan it would be that stick of celery you dream about every night.I searched for local sewing classes first, thinking I was going to learn to sew myself. I don’t know what I was thinking. I was eventually recommended a sewing shop by one of the sewing classes/workshop places I contacted. This is where I met the owner of the shop, a masterful older German lady. She reminded me of my father a bit, an old soul with an immense amount of knowledge and experience. She was an expert at her craft. She talked me through the manufacturing process and taught me a lot about it. She connected me with a fabric supplier, a waistband supplier and set out a timeline to create prototypes. All I had to do was provide the printed templates of the underwear on a roll of fabric. Now, there were two ways of printing on cotton; via a press printer, or a roll printer. The underwear template is quite large and the press printers I found did not have print beds large enough to accommodate the size. I did, however, find one print shop that used roll printers. The company was also one of the largest in the city with an impressive portfolio.I remember driving to the print shop with a big smile on my face. Got a tour of the plant and many valuable lessons on the printing process itself. I felt like everything was coming together. It was too easy.I had the fabric. I had the sewing shop lined up and now I was working with one of the largest print shops in the city. It was peanut butter and jelly time.I dropped a roll of cotton and 2 weeks later came back to pick it up printed with the individual underwear templates. I didn’t even check the prints. I popped the roll on my shoulder and spirited away to the sewing shop.Man, I felt amazing. I was on top of the world.I remember walking into the sewing shop very excited. We got into the prototyping room, put the roll on the table and gave it a little push from both sides to unroll it. The various colours from the different prints hit first. This was a walk in the park. But wait. Something wasn’t right. The individual underwear shapes looked off. I took a closer look and started noticing that every single underwear template was distorted. WTF. This was my first humbling experience where I was brought back down to earth. Slammed right to the ground. It turned out that when the printer pulled the fabric through, it was stretching it as the fabric contains some Elastane in it, so the underwear can lightly stretch around the natural curves of the body. The underwear template was printed while the fabric was stretched out. When it came off the roll, and the fabric came back into shape, the templates were skewed.Fuck!I reached out to the manufacturer of the printing machine the print shop used. I asked for the contact information of all their customers in Canada. I started calling them up one by one (I don’t even think there were more than 5) and asked if they could make print prototypes. I was unable to get a guarantee from any of them, that the printed templates would not be skewed when the fabric was stretched during printing. I started looking to the U.S. but the problem was the same. There were some companies that were willing to try but the production costs associated with creating samples were just too high. I never thought of what I was doing as a business idea. I just really, really wanted to make some god damn great looking underwear for myself. And I couldn’t.So I gave up.That is…until the beginning of 2017 when I came across an ad for MeUndies on Facebook. Than I saw them on Twitter, Instagram, Youtube, Pinterest, Snapchat, Podcasts...they were everywhere. And I thought to myself. I’m going to do this! I’m going to try again.Their prints were still not seamless but their tagline had my full attention. “The world’s softest underwear”. I wanted to see what that was all about and ordered a pair of briefs (Still grape smuggling). It turns out, MicroModal is not from this earth. It must be some advanced alien technology. It is so goddamn soft words cannot describe it. Soooooo much softer than cotton. If you’ve never touched MicroModal in your life do yourself a favour and grab some underwear made of this fabric. You can of course try out the world’s softest underwear at https://bunchofanimals.com. Seriously. Your nuts will be blown away.I think this is as much hyping as I can give MicroModal, so let’s continue the story. The cut of the underwear was a fail for me. My balls kept coming out on the sides. I never had this happen to me before in a pair of briefs. I thought the size was too large, but the waistband fit just right. On the butt they felt fine. But the front had leakage. And so I got to work.I first looked in China and found a few companies who agreed to make samples for a reasonable price. I sent over my original underwear template files with the prints set in them and the waiting game began. You know, Chinese companies get bombarded with sample requests every single day. MicroModal is a luxury fabric and carries a higher price tag than cotton and is much more difficult to source. Turns out the samples I was able to get could only be printed on cotton with an assurance that they were going to print just as well on MicroModal. The samples I received were Cotton and Polyester. The quality of the prints was nowhere near what I wanted. I tried again with another manufacturer with the same result. There was also the language barrier. I found it a bit difficult to communicate and convey ideas. I also realized that if I wanted to get the type of prints I was looking for, I’d have to get off my ass, put a lot of time into researching manufacturing companies, building personal relationships with them and taking a trip to China to visit them and get to know them. Building a personal relationship is key to setting a good foundation to build on.But China was far away. I have a 9 year old son who I share custody of. I have significant commitments to 3magine as well. How was I gonna pull this off? I wasn’t.I needed to get a printed MicroModal sample first, before I would make a decision to travel. This was going to be my new qualifier. And if I contact enough companies, it was bound to happen. So I started getting in touch with factories in India, Sri-Lanka, Indonesia, Thailand, South Korea, Romania, Poland, Italy and England. Where I found MicroModal I couldn’t find anyone with the ability to print on it. Turns out that because MicroModal is so soft, it’s very difficult to print on.I can’t tell you how many times I wanted to just give up. But for some reason I didn’t. It’s hard to say why. Is it motivation? Is it the process? Is it the end goal? It’s probably all of it. But somehow, the Universe aligned and I was introduced to a gentleman from Turkey who was representing a textile factory. We chatted about what I wanted to create. From that first conversation I had a feeling that these guys knew what they were doing. It was very easy to talk to them. I sent over the files. Everything was clear and about a week later I got this photo.imageHot Damn! They did it. The prints looked delicious. The fabric was the softest I have ever touched. I resurrected and went back to heaven. We started working on the cuts. Briefs, trunks and boxer-briefs for men. Thongs, bikinis and boyshorts for women.“Krystian, come to Istanbul my friend. You have to see the city. We will talk with the factory owner and make a deal”.The prints were perfect. The fabric was softer than anything I’ve ever touched before. There was no ball overhang. I had to go. That was the next logical step.I chose the 5 days when our son was with his mom the following week and used my credit card points to book a flight to Istanbul.Oh Istanbul. A beautiful city. A magical city. The architecture. The mosques. The traffic. The people. The Bazaar. The food.I could write an entire post just on the culinary delights of Istanbul.Shitting into a hole in the ground with a water hose to wash your ass was definitely the highlight of the trip. It’s good to experience pooping in a foreign place, unlike the one you’re used to. It’s also quite a humbling experience. And if you have a toilet with multiple buttons and a heated seat, you should be very grateful as you’ve been blessed in life.I spent 5 days in Turkey. It was working around the clock with their team on finalizing prints, cuts, order quantities and manufacturing timelines. I returned home jetlagged but happier than a pig in a blanket. It was really happening!A few days later I got a text from my main man in Turkey. He was taking a position with a much larger textile factory. He got an offer he couldn’t refuse.Things come and go in a blink of an eye. He was my main and only point of contact and the only one I knew at the factory who spoke English well. I could not believe this was happening again. It was very draining emotionally. We tried working on the prototypes again with the new factory he was representing. We had to start from the beginning. New deposits on fabric. On printing. On waistbands.Samples came few and far between until they stopped coming entirely. I was out of money. I didn’t have a product. I felt defeated. The relationship came to an end. It was full of lessons, the highest of highs, and the lowest of lows.Describe the process of launching the business.I’m just being dramatic :) There is a happy ending after all.In the week leading up to my trip to Istanbul I was also introduced to another gentleman in Turkey who I was told could possibly connect me with textile manufacturers. I didn’t have a chance to meet with him because of the short time I had and because I was committed to working with my previous contact. It didn’t feel right to go behind his back and work with someone else. The circumstances were different now and I reached out to him, presented my idea, sent all the files over and waited for an answer.“Krystian, my brother, don’t worry about anything. We will make the best underwear for you.”He wasn’t lying.I don’t know if he’s the Prince of Turkey or if he just really likes my smile because he went out of his way to pull together the best of the best. We have the softest, most luxurious MicroModal fabric. I have tried numerous MicroModal underwear from other brands. We have the softest fabric! When we worked on the final prototypes, the factory making our waistbands stopped manufacturing them and we were forced to look for another manufacturer. Don’t ask me how, but we (and by we I mean my amazing Turkish brother) connected with a factory from Italy making waistbands for two high end luxury fashion houses. These waistbands are on another level of soft. Made in Italy. Like Ferrari. We have the Ferrari of waistbands. Our prints are vibrant, and do not fade in the wash. We print in a full spectrum of colors where all other brands print on MicroModal in a maximum of 9 colors.Remember when I mentioned I was a brief kind of guy before this all started? Somewhere along the prototyping journey I got the first pair of MicroModal boxer-briefs. My previous relationship with boxer-briefs wasn’t a great one. Always riding up. Or going in my ass. Or my balls were sweaty. Just stop texting already. Block my number! And believe me, I wasn’t expecting much out of these Micro-Modal boxer briefs because they were boxer-briefs. But these were a different beast. I couldn’t believe how soft they were on my skin. When I had them on, I would forget I was wearing underwear. It felt as if I was wearing nothing at all. But everything was firmly in place. No flocking around. Alien tech I tell ya. We’re living in the future. Now picture this. MicroModal is 3X softer than cotton! 3X! You have $100 in your pocket. Now you have $300. You have a day off. Ok. You’re happy. Now you have three days off. That’s not a day off anymore. That’s a fucking weekend. You now have a weekend getaway planned. Exactly! We started with a small run of 100 pieces to validate the product and gather feedback.I gave all 100 pairs away. To friends, to family, to my professional network, to complete strangers. I wanted to get a wide range of people to try them out and eliminate any last issues that remained. The feedback from men was nothing short of amazing. Feedback from women was about 50% excellent, but the other 50% was all over the place. It’s too tight. Too loose. Too high. Too low.The factory had a minimum order quantity of 1000 pieces per design, per style. I took out a line of credit and between it and credit cards, I had enough for 3000 pieces. I decided to cut out the women’s line altogether as well as the men’s briefs and trunks. My research showed that the boxer-brief was the most popular cut, and this is what I was going to start building my underwear empire with.I created an underwear template in Photoshop onto which I’d drop various designs, photographs and illustrations and curated about 100 unique designs. With the help of friends and my professional network I narrowed that down to a final 10. Because I could only afford 3 designs, I had to choose the best 3, and so in May 2018 I designed the Bunch of Animals website to validate the best designs as well as pricing. The product images were just Photoshop renders, but they looked good enough. My business partner at 3magine helped develop the website on the Shopify platform. I took an online Facebook Ads course and launched a number of ads using the Photoshop renders of the various designs.imageI didn’t really know what I was doing, but was able to get a 2X ROA which was good enough to validate pricing and get an idea of the 3 best designs. These initial tests brought in my first 100 customers. Problem was, I didn’t have any stock 😲I emailed everyone personally and apologized for the lack of product, and a 3-month timeline before I could have it. Over 70% were willing to wait. A lot of the remaining 30% who asked for a refund also asked to be emailed when the product came in as they really loved the designs, and a lot of them became customers.I received my first stock of 3000 pieces in October 2018. I sent out the initial orders to the first customers and decided to spend the last $10,000 in credit on Facebook Ads during November and December, the biggest shopping months of the year. The ads did not work as well as over the summer. Turns out that because Q4 is the most popular shopping season, it is also the most expensive time for ads. I was barely able to break a 1X ROA. I hired two different advertising agencies to help me run the ads, but they weren’t able to even hit a 1X ROA. I spent all the remaining money, and although I gained new customers I was operating at a loss. Once again I felt defeated.December was definitely a low point for me in this journey. I was out of money and out of hope. I felt lost and depressed. I got a nasty case of bronchitis in early January that lasted 3 long weeks that put me in an even worse mental state. But it was also a blessing in disguise. I’ve been a daily marijuana smoker for the last 10 years. I started smoking as a suggestion from my ex-brother in law to help with insomnia. At the time 3magine was experiencing rapid growth, I had just moved to B.C. with my ex-wife and our 1-year old son. I had a lot of stress and anxiety. It started off as a remedy for sleep but eventually became an addiction and an escape from the black and white of the everyday.Because of the bronchitis I did not smoke for those 3 weeks. I started feeling different. My mind was becoming more clear. I was feeling better emotionally. The break from Bunch of Animals lasted for about 2 months, and in March 2019 I decided to get back into it.Since launch, what has worked to attract and retain customers? In early 2019 I met a wonderful copywriter, Larissa Banting, through a private Facebook Group for a course we were both in. She has helped me tremendously with copywriting and blogger outreach. Product copy, emails, articles, captions, you name it.I decided to try out various marketing channels in an effort to identify the most profitable ones, that took the least amount of effort and resources to execute.Facebook Ads, Instagram Ads, Instagram Influencers, Bloggers, Pinterest, SEO and Email marketing are all active areas of focus.Since March I’ve ran a number of new Facebook ad campaigns with some success. I’ve been able to get 1.5X ROAS which put me at a slight loss, but generate new customers, who I hope to convert into lifetime customers. About 30% of the current customers have purchased 3 pairs of more, with a few who have purchased over 10 pairs!I’ve also worked with a number of sponsored mail-outs with various lifestyle and men’s brands, which have brought in some profit. At this point thought, every dollar earned goes right back into another campaign. In July, I’ve partnered with another e-commerce brand to bring my underwear to Amazon as well as niche markets in Europe and the Middle East.imageHow are you doing today and what does the future look like?I’m currently working on 2 new design collaborations with amazing artists as well as 3 solid colours to be introduced in the Fall.I’m thinking of getting back into Facebook ads, but this time with video ads as I just wrapped up working with a video production company on a couple of short videos as well as a photoshoot with some great BTS footage.Definitely more mail-outs with great brands. I’m also starting to look for outside investment. I validated the idea and have received phenomenal feedback on the product. Additional funds would allow me to scale a lot faster. I want to introduce more designs and really push Facebook ads.By beginning of 2020 I’d like to introduce a new design each month, as well as start a monthly underwear subscription club.imageThrough starting the business, have you learned anything particularly helpful or advantageous?I’ve been an entrepreneur for the past 15 years but nothing has really prepared me for running an e-commerce brand with the exception of one important element. Patience. If you put effort towards anything you’re passionate about, you are bound to collect the fruits of your labour.imageWhat platform/tools do you use for your business?Sales Platform: ShopifyEmail Marketing: KlaviyoEmail Capture: OptinMonsterFulfillment: Chit ChatsWhat have been the most influential books, podcasts, or other resources?I haven’t listened to any podcasts, but have participated in Jesse Elder’s and Cat Howel’s Time Piercing Course which has greatly helped with motivation, mindset and manifestation. This is also where I met Larissa.I have also read the following books which I found very helpful. Sometimes a book may only contain a single tip or insight, but it could very well be a life changer, and it’s all well worth it.CashvertisingContagious: Why Things Catch OnInfluence: The Psychology of PersuasionAdvice for other entrepreneurs who want to get started or are just starting out?Don’t get discouraged by failure. Think of it like playing a video game. The strategy may not have worked, but you can always try a different move. Learn, adapt and push forward. Are you looking to hire for certain positions right now?Yes. Chief Executive Financier :) AKA the investor.
