What is pooram?
Pooram refer to temple festivals that represent the heart and soul of Kerala. Entire regions come to life as the streets are decked up to celebrate these events. Caparisoned elephants take to the streets and the roars of the approving crowds can be heard far and wide. Many a folk art performance is held as the area around the temple turns into a virtual carnival. The colours on display are mesmerizing and people religiously await these Pooram festivals annually. Listed below are some of the most prominent temple festivals in the state. Each of them have unique rituals and traditions associated with them, and should be experienced first-hand to truly appreciate their grandeur and beauty.

Thrissur pooram A resplendent festival celebrated with a grand display of caparisoned elephants, dazzling parasols, and percussion music, the Thrissur Pooram is a magnificent spectacle merging the spiritual and cultural essence of Kerala. Celebrated in the Malayalam month of medam (April-May), the pooram is held at the Thekkinkadu Maidanam in Thrissur.

2. Arattupuzha Pooram. The oldest pooram (temple festival) in all of Kerala, the Arattupuzha Pooram is held at the Sree Sastha Temple in Thrissur for a period of seven days each year. Believers say that at this 'conclave', all Gods and Goddesses gather during the time period of the Pooram. As many as 23 deities from different temples in Thrissur are brought here and worshipped which makes for a stunning visual in itself.

3. Chinakkathoor Pooram. Sree Chinakkathoor Bhagavathy Temple hosts one of the most unique and colourful poorams (temple festivals) in Kerala. Situated in Palappuram near Ottapalam Taluk in Palakkad district, this festival draws in people in large numbers annually. It is celebrated on Makam asterism in the Malayalam month of Kumbham. One is treated to some of the best folk art performances that Kerala has. Majestic elephants marching through the streets are among the best sights seen during this pooram. The accompanying panchavadyam and pandimelam (traditional orchestra) add to the grand spectacle. Pulikali performances are also seen along with the constant beat of drums reverberating through the air. People of all religions and castes come together to celebrate this great occasion every single year.

4. Pariyanampetta Pooram. even days of cultural and spiritual revelry is what draws people to the great Pariyanampetta Pooram, the annual festival at the Pariyanampetta Bhagavathy Temple. The number of diverse performances here is a rarity even among the special and unique poorams that adorn our State’s landscape. People especially love viewing its famous Kalamezhuthu Pattu, where the images of the Goddesses are drawn on the floor using different colourful natural powders. Kathakali and Chakiyarkoothu performances can be seen at the venue, where Bhagavathi or Mother Goddess is the presiding deity.

5. Uthralikkavu Pooram About twenty-one elephants in the traditional attire line up with colourful parasols; swaying venchamarams (white tufts) and alavattams (peacock-feather fans)! Surely a spectacle you wouldn’t want to miss. Then ensure your presence during the annual festival at the Sree Ruthira Mahakalikavu Temple, popularly known as Uthralikavu Pooram.The festival is held every year in the Malayalam month of Kumbham (usually falls on February / March).

6. Peruvanam Pooram The Peruvanam Temple in Cherpu hosts one of the oldest festivals in the world, the legendary 1400-year-old Peruvanam Pooram. Dedicated to Lord Shiva, Peruvanam Temple’s ambience and charm draw in people from across the State. Legend has it that the present Sree Kovil (sanctum sanctorum) was originally a tree where Lord Shiva did tapas (meditation). The present festival has evolved over the years and saw a resurgence in the form of two spectacular poorams - the Peruvanam Pooram and Arattupuzha Pooram.

7. Anthimahakalankavu Vela. The annual festival of Anthimahakalan Kavu Vela of Anthimahakalan Kavu Temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva. Even though the presiding deity of the temple is Goddess Bhagavathy, the temple is famous for Lord Shiva who is in the form of Anthimahakalan (Kiratha). The temple is located at Chelakkara in Thrissur.

8.Thirumandhamkunnu Pooram Thirumandhamkunnu Pooram is an important temple festival of Central Malabar, Kerala, India. Thriumandhamkunnu Temple is said to be one among the three important Bhagavathi temples of Kerala, the others being Kodungallur and Panayannarkavu. Daily pooja attracts thousands of devotees. The famous Mangalya Pooja attracts thousands of young girls, who seeks fortune of a good wedlock.
The festival lasts for 11 days from Makayiram star in Meenam (March, April). There is evidence to prove that the pooram festival has a history going back to the early decades of the 16th century in the palm leaf records of Calicut University. People from different parts of the State have started reaching Angadipuram to seek.

9. Nenmara Vallangi Vela A festival celebrated annually in the Nellikulangara Bhagavathy Temple in Palakkad, Nenmara Vallangi Vela is among the most beautiful celebrations held on these shores. The vivid colours, lights, fireworks and art forms on display make for an entertaining and unforgettable experience.

Panchavadyam
Panchavadhyam is a classical orchestra. Pancha Vadyam is an orchestra, typical of Kerala, consisting of five instruments - Maddalam, Edakka, Thimila, Ilathalam and Kombu. It is an inevitable accompaniment during festivals, religious or otherwise. The most thrilling performance of Panchavadyam can be witnessed at most of the temple festivals in Kerala.During the orchestra, it is the maddalam and the thimila both vying for prominence. Panchavadhyam is a regular feature of all auspicious events and occasions. Panchavadyam, literally meaning an orchestra of five instruments, is basically a temple art form that has evolved in Kerala. Of the five instruments, four — timila, maddalam, ilathalam and idakka — belong to the percussion category, while the fifth, kombu, is a wind instrument. Some of the known institutions that give formal training in panchavadyam are Kerala Kalamandalam. Major venues, Thrissur Pooram, Nadappura Panchavadyam at Wadakancheri Siva Temple participating to famous Uthralikkavu Vela at Wadakancheri, Kaladi Panchavadyam ulsavam, Machattu Thiruvanikkavu vela, Nenmara-Vallangi vela, Vayilliamkunnu Pooram, Pariyanampatta pooram, Chinakathoor pooram, Varavoor Palakkal Karthika vela, Tirumandhamkunnu pooram purappadu, Tripunithura Sree Poornathrayeesa Aarattu, Tripunithura Thamaramkulangara Makaravilakku, Thiruvona Mahotsavam at Sree Vamanamoorthy Temple Thrikkakara and Cherpulassery Ayyappan Kavu ulsavam, besides temples in places like Chottanikkara, Pallavoor and several renowned temples in Malabar like Kottakkal Viswambhara Temple and Kottakkal Pandamangalam Sreekrishna Temple.
