Why is YouTube censoring pro-democracy Russians on behalf of the increasingly authoritarian Vladimir Putin?
A candidate in the upcoming parliamentary elections during a televised debate called for the release of dissident Aleksei Navalny and other political prisoners of Vladimir Putin.
YouTube was asked by state-run Russian TV to remove clips of the candidate, Maksim Shevchenko, on the grounds of “copyright infringement”.
The debate was aired on Rossia-24 state television, which is part of the state-owned All-Russia State Television and Radio Company (VGTRK). VGRTK asked YouTube to block the use of the video, citing copyright infringement.
Okay, but VGRTK had no problem with clips from other candidates who didn’t criticize Putin’s authoritarianism.
Other clips from the debates aired on Rossia-24 and Rossia-1 remain accessible on YouTube.
One of the problems with Big Tech is that they put money ahead of ethics. Social media allowed Donald Trump to spout dangerous non-stop lies for all but the final two weeks of his presidency.  Silicon Valley is preoccupied with kissing up to those in power in order to preserve their outrageous profits.
