I still think of Earl of Merioneth as being a "new" engine.
It was built in the 70's, AFTER the end of the steam age, had that weird "modern" styling to the outline, and...
Yeah it's just weird thinking of this as being an "old" machine whose prime time in service has come and gone.

I never thought I’d ever have the chance to share this game with you by means of an officially authorized release, but it’s happening soon, and I can’t wait.

Have I posted this before? I’m pretty sure not.
Anyway, here’s a shot of Surf Avenue from the F Train. Really lovely view of the Cyclone as the train enters Aquarium Station.
This is about as different from the Bluebell as it gets.

So I found a youtuber who has tons and tons of awesome VHS rips of period steam footage from the UK and elsewhere.
But that’s not why I’m even posting this.
Just watch the first 30 seconds of this video.
The production values for the intro sequence are so poor and out of date intensely charming.
The music genuinely sounds like it was composed and performed on an Apple II computer or a paired down version of a Manhattan Research Inc. “Electronium” system.
And the titles and captions in the intro and outro look like they were literally made using the “add title” feature from a home video camera of the late 80′s.
The music and caption production values would have looked and seemed “bad” even in the late 70′s, by the mid to late 80′s they would have seemed extremely obsolete and amateur level.
This video came out in 1996!
DVD was already becoming available at this point, and most high end home computers by then could produce “better” sounding music and title cards with the right programs, so how these production values managed to find their way into a commercially produced series of video tapes as late as 1996, is beyond me.
But boy am I glad it happened anyway.
Oh, and the actual footage is fantastic as well, the cheesy intro is just a bonus.

Twitter’s recommended content thingie actually did its job properly for once and exposed me to this animation.
It’s also my first exposure to the song itself and whoo boy.
I like how it totally derails (pun intended) at the end and becomes about the narrator murdering someone as a brain parasite, which has nothing to do with trains but hey why not.
