ROLEX GMT-MASTER PEPSI

This week's "Bob's Watch Pick" goes to the ROLEX GMT-MASTER PEPSI! With all the red, white and blue seen recently......... this watch reminds us of 4th. of July AND of course the famous soda PEPSI.

People ask "Why red and blue? Was it intentionally meant to remind us of PEPSI? Actually, not at all !!

In the 1950s, during the heyday of cosmopolitan air travel, two stalwart brands of the age, Rolex and Pan American Airways partnered to create a watch that would make it possible to tell the time in two time zones at once. With long-haul travel becoming more common, this was something pilots actually needed. And so the first GMT-Master was born in 1955 and featured a red and blue bicolor bezel to help aid in differentiating between day (red) and night (blue). It was a fairly wild and colorful take on the existing Rolex case and bezel design started by the Submariner just two years earlier.

It would be interesting to see someone wearing this watch while drinking a PEPSI don't you think!!

Ha! Reminiscing about our previous trips abroad as it’s not something we’ll be doing in the near future. Going through some old photos from our 2018 trip through Spain, I realise there are so many photos I didn’t share (probably due to being in the hills a little off grid). Legendary Jazz virtuoso Chet Baker during a session for “My Funny Valentine” in 1952. Mr. Baker, nicknamed "The Prince of Cool" by Charlie Parker during the height of the San Francisco ‘50s, led a brilliant, tortured life. His most famous work, a live album entitled “Chet Baker in Tokyo” featuring “Almost Blue” was released a year before his death in 1988.
