Fic Recs: A World in a Grain of Sand Edition.

I love epic tales in which authors slowly build up their worlds and characters. I love losing myself in works slowly outgrowing canon word count to the point of forgetting to go to bed at reasonable hours. However, I am in absolute awe of writers who manage the rare feat of conjuring the same level of immersion with just a short story or even a one shot.

This totally incomplete list of my all-time favorite short(-ish) stories is a tribute to all intrepid souls out there tackling this challenge.

I know, I know , 7 chapters with 31k words is putting A LOT of strain on the definition of „short stories“ but I just HAD to include this one. Reading it simply broke me. Absolutely gorgeous prose, two main characters you cannot help falling in love with and a story that keeps you guessing until the very end.

"Three Weeks on the Nimrodel" by @from-the-coffee-shop-in-edoras

Haldir is quiet. Stoic. Solitary. Not the easiest person to be around for three weeks of guard duty up a solitary mallorn tree. He knows that and has made his peace with it. Until a so far unfamiliar fellow marchwarden comes along.

Do you know this moment of utter bliss when you come home after an absolutely rotten day and are finally able to snuggle up with a fluffy blanket, your favorite hot beverage and your comfort book/band/movie? This fic is that exact feeling distilled into 3000 words. Add a good helping of pure love for the more obscure corners of Middle Earth and two absolutely charming, introvert main characters et voila: utter contentment for you to come back to again and again and again whenever that fluffy blanket is out of reach.

Still not an Elves person. But I might have to fess up to being a Haldir person one of these days. This gem surely is another nail in my coffin 😅

when you woke up you expected to still be on dante’s couch but when you realised you were in his bed you were very confused, dante lied and said Nero might’ve been the one to put you in his bed.

you and nero were fighting off some demons when you one of them ended up stabbing you in the leg by one when he wasn’t looking. after a while he realised that you weren’t fighting and when he saw you trying to pushing yourself off one leg leaning against a wall he panicked and ran to check on you

it took a while to convince you to let him carry you back to the van. when you finally gave in he quickly scooped you up and ran towards the van. it took him all but ten seconds to realise he was carrying the person he fell in love with and he started blushing, he was glad that you weren’t looking because mf was RED

when he got back to the van he placed you on the couch where Lady and Trish were, they both helped you get changed, cleaned up and bandaged up (if you’re a girl he looked away when your pants came off, out of respect ya’know)

poor boy was genuinely worried sick about you, it kinda made Dante jealous because when this man got stabbed or something nero was just like “ight so anyway-“. he asked if you were okay and if you needed something before he got off the van to go fight off demons

fun fact : he didn’t sleep the night you got hurt just incase you needed to get up in the middle of the night to use the restroom or something

virgil was staying at your house for a little bit and the one day that he was actually home you passed out in the backyard trying to do something that virgil offered to do multiple times but you said you’ll be fine. you pass out a lot, it’s been happening since you were in school so this wasn’t Virgil’s first rodeo dealing with you passing out. the only reason why he kinda freaked out was because you were on a ladder and very high up it too

when he caught you he gently placed you on the floor and thought of what to do for a second. he scooped you up and walked inside into your living room and then gently placed you on the couch. he stayed there next to you to make sure you woke up and to be there if you needed anything

when you woke up you were surprised to see virgil right there. he got you water and stuff. when you asked why he was being to nice all of a sudden he lied and said to make sure you don’t pass out again but itbwas really because he cared about you and hated seeing you pass out like that.

Vergil needed space. He was perfectly content fighting his brother until time itself was meaningless. He knew more than anyone, however, that all good things must come to an end. When an opportunity to escape back to the human world presented itself, both he and Dante took it without hesitating. It was only after they landed topside and he came face to face with Nero again that Vergil considered that maybe it would have been easier to stay in the Underworld.

Dante was determined to keep the little Sparda family together. And while Nero was nowhere near as obnoxious as Dante about it, it was clear that the boy wanted the same thing. It was all… a lot to deal with. Having so many people making familial claims on him after decades of being alone was-

“Vergiiiiiiiiiilllllllllll!!” The man was interrupted from his thoughts at the sound of a voice calling out to him. 

He furrowed his brows and glanced towards the sound. He was certain he didn’t recognize the voice. 

“Vergil!” Again the mysterious voice traveled along the wind. 

For a second he thought it might be a demon attempting to lure him out. But he could sense nothing of the sort. 

“Mrrrow!” A cat, whose presence he dismissed in his attempts to find the source of the voice, jumped onto the bench he was sitting on. 

It was a beautiful creature. In the fading sunlight, its silver spotted coat seemed iridescent. A reflected gleam caught his eye and he reached out to the cat, sliding his hand down its furred head to the collar around its neck. He flipped the tag and a small smile tugged at his lips. 

“So, you’re who she’s looking for, Virgil.” 

The cat maneuvered its head so that Vergil could scratch behind its ears. He gave in and gave the cat all the scratches it wanted. He heard your footsteps before you came into view, though he kept his attention on the purring cat. He did have a lingering fondness for felines, after all. 

“Virgil! There you are!” You yelled as you rushed up to meet the man who was keeping your sneaky cat in place. Quickly, before he could escape again, you picked up your cat and snapped a leash on his collar. 

You looked up from your cat to the man standing a few feet from you. You could only hope that your breathlessness could be explained away by all the running you’d been doing, because this was the most attractive man you’d ever seen. In any other situation you wouldn’t even approach him, much less be able to say a word to him. But this wasn’t any other situation. 

“Thank you so much, mister!” Smooth. To cover up your awkwardness, you turned your cat to face you and scolded him. “Bad boy, Virgil!” Of course you had no idea how humorous the man found your words. 

The man nodded, “That is an...interesting name, for a cat.” 

The warmth of a blush tickled your face as you looked back at the stranger. He had a nice voice, it was deep but not booming and just a bit gravelly. You’d bet anything that he had the most seductive bedroom voice. 

Putting a stop to such thoughts you cleared your throat and pulled Virgil back to your chest, supporting him so that he was comfortable. “Aheh. Yea…Well, he came into my life when I felt I needed a guide.” 

“I see.” 

“Oh! Sorry,” you stretched out your right hand around Virgil and introduced yourself and asked for his name.

The man had to take two steps forward to reach your hand, but shook it nonetheless. One side of his mouth pulled up into an amused smirk, “My name is Vergil.” 

You dropped his hand and scrunched up your face, “What?”

He chuckled (oh the sound of that light laughter!), “Truthfully.” 

You found yourself returning his smile and a giggle burst out of your chest. “Wow! That’s crazy!”

You looked between your cat and Vergil. “Is that why you were so nice to him, kindred soul or something?” 

He wasn’t sure if you were directing the question to him or to the cat in your arms, but took it as rhetorical either way. 

Before you could say anything else, a constable car pulled up near the bench and a park ranger stuck his head out of the window. “Hey guys, the park is closing. Start heading out.”

“Yessir.” You nodded. “Come on, let’s go home, Virgil.” 

You coughed and corrected yourself, “Kitty-Virgil, I mean.” Not that you’d be opposed.

As if sensing your thoughts, Vergil smirked at you, but didn’t say anything. He did however start moving in step with you as you both exited the park. 

“He’s usually doesn’t bolt out the door like he did tonight,” You started when you realized that Vergil was walking in company with you. “I think he was just upset because I’ve been kinda busy this week. So, thanks again for finding him.”

Vergil gave a slight nod and reached out to give the cat a final scratch, “In truth, he found me.”

‘Good kitty.’ You smiled and snuggled Virgil for a second before you reached the exit and stopped. “Well, I’m this way.” You said with a toss of your head to the left.

“Then this is where I leave you.” He said and stepped to the right.

“Hey, I come to this park often. Maybe I’ll see you again?” You dared to ask, hiding your embarrassment in Virgil’s fur.

“Perhaps.” Handsome and mysterious. 

“Good night, person-Vergil.” You said as you started off towards home.

The sound of his chuckle as he also bid you a good night would ring in your head all night. 

Virgil was aptly named. It seemed he guided you to a new friend, someone you were happy to have met. And Vergil left the curious meeting with a lighter heart than before. He was even looking forward to meeting you again.
