Battle of Alberta 2022 Survey Results

It’s time my friends! If you would like to see previous surveys, here is 2021 and 2020 for your reference.

We had a total of 16 respondents to the survey. The average BoAB reader is female, age 19-24, and Canadian. At least half of respondents this year identified as Albertan, which is a bigger proportion than previously. Most of you live in Canada, and of those in Alberta most live in Edmonton followed by Calgary or Lethbridge.

Read on for graphs and some notes about what’s new!

Demographics

A larger proportion this year are female while fewer are male, and more of you seem to be questioning. Whether you’re new readers or are old readers figuring some stuff out, we’re happy to have you!

Less of you are 14-24 year olds, but more of you are identifying as 25-30+. (I know I made a couple people feel old with that last category and I apologize, I can add a bit more nuance next year if you like). Again, either some new folks or some of you are just aging, no problem!

Most of you are from Canada, which is not unusual. We have more folks from outside of North America than previously, however.

A larger proportion of you consider yourselves Albertan. This year, we have fewer people who visit and more people who have never been.

More of you once again live in Edmonton - even with more responses, the proportions of this graph stayed about the same as last year.

This was a new question for 2022. This is basically what I expected, some of you are definitely more well-travelled than I am in the province! I also felt I should have specified that this question can be answered by all respondents, whether you live in Alberta or elsewhere.

Blog

Those of you who followed via IAMP or because of me stayed about the same. This year we had less people looking for Hetalia OCs and more looking up stuff about places in Alberta, which is definitely a significant shift. Feeling the pressure for sure now :)

Art maintains its position in number one; interestingly “culture” shot up there (is that something we have?) while meta fell, and the rest sort of jostled around a little. I might owe some of that to the phrasing of “connection to Hetalia”, seeing as I’ve done little to anchor this comic in the Hetalia canon and therefore there’s a drop in people who were looking for that content above. At least, that’s my supposition.

When I made this question I realized I had done very little other than asks, which isn’t a bad thing. I’m glad you liked ‘em!

Historical events muscled its way to the top this year, and in tandem with the next question I’ve definitely been thinking about how to deal with that. More on that later, but I also find it interesting that Asks fell significantly here.

I really tried to narrow this down to three things I was considering on working on or wrapping up so as not to scatter my focus too much, but of course a couple of you did steer your answers differently. The historical focus is definitely the winner here though.

I meant to just do simple timelines, but the more I think of it the more I feel I need to tell some sort of cliff’s notes “story” of Alberta in order to situate the characters and to accommodate readers who aren’t familiar with either the broad strokes of Alberta or Canadian history in general. It’s difficult to undertake such a task, but I promise I have been :) While the characters featured here span only a couple hundred years at most, there are broader scopes I need to consider in order to fully explain the contexts in which they came to be and to relate to one another.

Characters

So here’s where things get interesting...

All of you love Calvin. It’s clearly not just because of hometown pride. Is it because I torture him? Is it because he has a sort of stupidity naivety that makes you want to take care of him? Is it because he’s a scorpio and could snap any minute? Why??????

Secondly: a significant proportion of you have decided Jasper is your favourite of all the characters before I’ve even published any design. Wow. Mac has also dropped off the list entirely.

Okay, Jasper is no surprise here. I also think it is HILARIOUS that not only did your favourite character score low, he even scored below That Guy On the Fridge. Very interesting.

And oddly enough, I guess you guys must have felt sorry for Ed not being your favourite so he finally won the battle this year by a significant proportion instead of a deadlock. Bravo! We also had respondents refuse to choose and who summoned the rats back from last year. Special thanks to everyone for restraining themselves from naming any ucp politicians this go.

Cyberbullying, and the Story of “B”

I have been cyber-bullied, or whatever you would classify arguing with a complete stranger you have never met. Cyberbullying is something you allow to happen to yourself. You google your name and you visit the profiles of someone who wants to hurt your feelings. You feel attacked so you attack back. Cyberbullying is silly and it can be ignored, making it a waste of time for everyone. The reason people write insulting things online has everything to do with how they feel about themselves.

Cyberstalking is different, though just as pointless. There is no reason you need to know anything about someone you’ve never met unless you’re forging a relationship with them. If you have to spend a considerable amount of time on google, trying to figure out where someone lives, where they work, and who their friends are, you are cyberstalking them. Regardless of why you felt you needed to know this information.

When I was young I wanted to learn how to code, but I had no idea how to, so I copied others website layouts and altered the CSS/HTML to make it into my own. As an adult I understand how wrong I was and I would never do this again. But at the time I was very young, stupid, and quite stubborn. I apologized to the people I wronged, moved on, and assumed everyone else did too. But what I didn’t know was that someone was watching. Let’s call that person B.

B was from Tulsa, Oklahoma. She ran numerous websites where she pretended to be everything she was not, a mother, a wife, a musician, a drug addict, a cancer survivor, etc… She ran these websites for years, from 1999 – 2014, approximately. B was dedicated in her journey to live a fake life on the Internet and she was surprisingly believable (using stolen photos of a woman she went to high school with and photos of her children) and she acquired many followers over the years. She was also a notorious cyberstalker, having created thousands of websites about hundreds of innocent people.

I was unaware that B had been watching me for years. She obsessed over every detail of my life. She became persistent in her intent to ruin my reputation. She created websites and blogs where she posted awful and untrue things about me, things no normal person would say, things I refuse to speak about here. She gained access to my social media accounts, contacted my university and later on my employer. She seemed to know everything about me. She knew when I was working as a photographer in Alberta, a burlesque dancer in Toronto and when I was going to school in my hometown.

B had collected screenshots of my Deadjournal account dating back to 2003. She had screenshots of my brothers Deadjournal from 2003. She had screenshots of the first website I made in 2004. She had screenshots of my old 2005 Myspace profile. She had screenshots of my 2009 Facebook account. She had screenshots of a photography website I ran in 2010. She had screenshots of emails I sent in 2012. She had screenshots of my 2013 Instagram profile. She had screenshots of my partners tweets from 2013. B dedicated her life to trying to ruin mine.

Eventually I realized she was responsible for the majority of the cyberbullying, creating hate sites and hate listings about me while also creating fake websites in my name where she posted horrendous things, and people believed every word of it, attributing these awful comments to me. I suddenly had enemies I had never heard of, let alone spoke to.

Fortunately she wasn’t very clever, or maybe she was and I was just the first person willing to find out who she was. I browsed her Flickr profile and saw that the name on her prescription bottles didn’t match the name she used on her website. When looking up that name on Facebook I came across the profile of a woman whose photos were on B’s Flickr profile. I used a facial recognition tool to find out who the other photos B was using belonged to. As it turns out, she was using photos of a woman she went to high school with and had been pretending to be her for years.

After finding out who B really was I discovered hundreds of hate sites she created about other people dating back to as early as 1999. Blogger accounts, WordPress blogs, actual websites, and social media accounts. B wasted 25 years of her life to hating people she never met, people who were living normal lives, just trying to find peace and happiness like everybody else. People she deemed bad, or annoying, or people who had wronged her in some way.

B died of a heart attack in 2014. Sometimes I question her death and wonder if she really died, because she was so good at lying, but I understand that’s probably my trauma clouding rational thought. There’s no denying she had a very serious (and probably untreated) mental illness, and I’m very sorry for that. I understand she was bullied a lot in school and I’m very sorry for that too. She didn’t deserve to be bullied, and neither did her victims.

It’s a shame that B had no one in her life who cared enough to help her. She clearly had a flair for writing, and she could have made a nice life for herself if she hadn’t let her need for revenge get in the way. I do hope that wherever she is, she’s happy. And I’m happy to finally be rid of her and able to live my life freely without constantly looking over my shoulder. – K

Dylan Holloway and him being all PDA but you being shyyyyy

“dyl, babe,” you call from your place on the couch, “are you almost ready? we were supposed to be there, like, five minutes ago.”

“i was waiting on you,” he comes out of the bedroom of the apartment you’d rented for the weekend with his hair still wet and shirt in his hand. you click the side button on your phone and look at him with a raised eyebrow. after he pulls his shirt over his head, he focuses on you with a goofy grin, “what?”

“nothing, just put your shoes on and let’s get going. i want to get there before it gets too crowded,” you sigh and stand, grabbing your bag after dropping your phone in it.

he leans against the counter as he slips on his sneakers, “if it does get too bad, we’ll just leave. i don’t want you to get too overwhelmed.”

“you’re so sweet,” you pinch his cheek jokingly and he shoves your hand away. he pulls you closer and places a kiss on your lips, but you pull away before it gets too heated and you wind up leaving even later or deciding not to go at all. he pouts and chases after your lips, but you slip away, “we’re going. i’m leaving tomorrow and i want to have fun tonight because i won’t get to see you for a few weeks.”

“well, we should just stay here and make the most of your last twelve hours in wisconsin then,” he huffed and followed you towards the door. he waited for you to lock it before throwing his arm over your shoulder and leading you towards the elevator.

you interlace your fingers with his as you descend and tuck yourself into his side as you walk out into the winter wisconsin night. it wasn’t as bad as your hometown in alberta, but it still could be pretty brutal. you had learned that during your last visit shortly after the seasons had changed.

he tightens his arm around you and presses a kiss to the side of your head as you walk towards kollege klub. the apartment just so happened to be in a great location, so it took less than ten minutes before you were walking through the door.

“i see them,” dylan says and you let him lead you over to where his group of friends were already sitting. “hey guys.”

“holloway!” a guy shouts from the other side of the table. he wasn’t on the team, but he always seemed to be around. “and holloway’s girl! good to see ya!”

“good to see you too, tony,” you send a forced smile as you get into the tall chair. you greet everyone around the table and so does dylan as he wedges himself in between your legs. “dylan-”

“y/n!” cole shouts, running up beside you. “i’ve missed you, dude! why do you have to live in canada?”

you laugh at his whining, “because i still have school and my parents won’t let me move countries for school. unlike you, my athletic ability is slim to none.”

“still,” he pouts, and then he looks at dylan. he raises an eyebrow at how close he was, “seriously?”

“shut up and go talk to owen or alex or anyone else,” dylan snaps, burying his face in the crook of your neck. you flush and send cole an apologetic look, mouthing your apology before he slips away.

“you don’t have to be such a dick,” you mumble, flushing as he starts to place kisses on your neck. you rest your hand on the base of his neck and pull at the hair that rested there, “hey.”

“what?” he asks, trying to get back to what he was doing. you pull back and he gets a pleading look in his eyes, “y/n-”

“i’m gonna go and get some drinks and maybe that’ll help with your attitude,” you huff before pushing him to the side to slip off the chair. you make your way over to the bar. you signal the bartender and after flashing your id, order your drinks.

“he’s being extra clingy tonight, huh?” ty speaks up as he slides in beside you at the bar. you look back and find dylan talking with owen, but staring at you. you send him a smile before you turn towards the older boy.

“i’m leaving tomorrow. he always gets this way which never makes it any easier,” you explain. “do you have a girlfriend?”

he shakes his head, “i know that it’s not something that i can handle now. with the captaincy, school, and other things, it wouldn’t be fair to her. i’ll wait until i get myself figured out and settled before doing that.”

“wow,” you say, a little shocked at his answer. “that’s actually kind of sweet. good on you, ty.”

“thank you,” he chuckles. “i’m gonna let you go because i think dylan’s about ready to come over here and end my season. nice to see you, y/n.”

“nice to see you too,” you grin and give him a hug before he slips away as quickly as he had come. you turn back and grab your drinks from the bartender, “thank you.”

you walk back towards your table and dylan slips out from in front of your chair. you sit down and he instantly goes back to the way he was before, but this time you let him. you drape you’re arm over his shoulder and pull him back, planting a kiss on his cheek.

“what did ty want?” he asks, burying his face in your neck. you run his back as you hum, “not trying to make a move on you was he?”

you laugh at what you knew was supposed to be a joke, but his tone was slightly serious, “he wasn’t, dyl. you don’t have to worry.”

“i wasn’t worried,” he lies.

“sure you weren’t,” you roll your eyes. he rests against you for a minute before you call for him, “hey, dyl?”

“yes?” he pulls back and looks you in the eyes, resting his hands on your legs.

“you know that i love you right? like, a lot?”

“i know,” he confirms, pressing his lips to yours softly. you smile and rest your hand against his cheek. “and i know it’s hard now, but it won’t always be like this. someday soon, we won’t have to keep saying goodbye.”

“i know,” you say, “and i can’t wait.”

IcariaHQ Task 2: Character Development

BASICS

Name → Larkspur Durham Fox... But seriously, just call me Lark because my name is ridiculous. My mom swears up and down that she’d picked my name out months before I was born, which makes it worse than it being post-pregnancy nonsense. Larkspur because she thought it sounded beautiful and dangerous. Durham for my grandma’s maiden name. Fox because... that was my grandpa’s last name, so it’s my mom’s. And mine.

Age → 27

Date of Birth →  Ah yes, the 20th of July... 1993. A good day. I don’t remember it at all.

Hair → Blonde. I dye it, but that’s my business.

Eye Color → They’re a really light blue.

Accent (If any) → Steffi makes fun of me because of how Canadians say “about.” But I think I absorbed some inflection from when I lived in England and Germany. It’s more difficult to pick up any specific accent in Icaria because folks come from all over, so that’s probably or the best.

Height → Uhhhh should I measure myself? I think like 1.68 m/5′6″?

Weight → Okay, if I don’t remember how tall I am, do you think I know how much I weight? Maybe like 57 kg/126 lbs?

Tattoos or piercings and where → Single lobe piercings only. FUNNY STORY ABOUT THAT. My mom apparently decided to drop in and spend some quality time with me when I was two, and brought me back to my grandparents with pierced ears. Grandma’s still miffed about it. I can never decide on a tattoo design, so I haven’t gotten one yet. It’s probably for the best.

Birthmarks (if any) → I’ve got plenty of freckles? I have never managed to catalog them.

Scars (if any) → Haven’t found anything in a while. I guess some of the ones I had healed. Score.

Left or right handed → I’m left-handed. It’s annoying.

Single or taken? → I’m single right now, tragically.

Are you happy? → Happiness is fleeting. I’ve got some of that emotion at this moment, but I’m not content yet when there’s so much injustice.

How do you dress? → Casual. I used to dress a little better, but I’ve given up on presentation. When I’m done with my education, I’ll probably have to start caring again.

Is there anything you want to change about yourself? → Yeah, I’d like to be more charismatic, since I don’t know how to make people listen to me. Not just hear me.

FACTS ABOUT YOUR FAMILY

Mortal parent’s name and occupation → Diana Fox, office manager

Deity you’re related to → Zelus. I’ve met him literally once, but he sent me, like, a couple birthday cards before that. He seemed okay, but kind of a shit-stirrer. Did not have nice things to say about Grandma even though I’m 90% sure he’s never met her, so that’s annoying. I don’t have a high opinion of him.

Siblings (if any) → None from my mom. She said Apollo was really hot when she visited me a few years back, and I’m more than a little worried I’m going to end up with a much younger little sibling. It is harrowing to me that Mom hasn’t hit menopause yet. I know this because she tells me about her personal health in great detail.

Hometown → Calgary, Alberta, Canada. I still have Canadian citizenship, which is annoying.

Believe in love at first sight →  I used to, which mostly ended in misunderstandings for baby gay Lark. Listen, love is way too complicated to be boiled down to a glance. If I understood any more than that, I would be in much better shape.

A few warnings before we proceed:

The data below is pertinent only to the anime, not the franchise as a whole. Much of what is written here does not match the novel. Please keep that in mind when finding any controversies or additional information. This also applies to the characters from the anime who are not in the books and vice-versa.

The profiles follow summaries of each episode. They’re the same ones from the official site, all of which I’ve already translated, so I’ve embedded links to their translations.

The order of introduction of each character corresponds to the order of appearances in each episode, hence the numeration and hence why they don’t follow the official main character line-up. The only exception to this is Gilbert, whose profile is introduced by episode 8.

Unlike the other characters, Violet has three profiles. That’s surely for the sake of showcasing her development.

A few characters have their names written wrong. The people in charge clearly took their translations from the Netflix subs, which everyone knows got many things wrong. I’ve taken the liberty to correct them. Specifically, it’s Dietfried written as “Diethard”, Abelfreya written as “Eberfreya”, and Ale written as “Yale”.

Episode 1

Violet Evergarden CV: Ishikawa Yui

An Auto-Memories Doll of the CH Postal Company. Unknown background. Estimated age is 14 years.

She became an Auto-Memories Doll in order to learn the meaning of the words “I love you”, which her superior from the battlefields back when she was a soldier, Gilbert, had told her. Until becoming an Auto-Memories Doll, as she used to live only for the sake of fighting, she was neither able to understand the feelings of other people nor her own. However, through interacting with her clients, she comes in contact with all sorts of emotions, such as the feeling of loving someone and the sadness of losing an important person, and grows up step by step.

Claudia Hodgins CV: Koyasu Takehito

The president of CH Postal Company. His family is a wealthy one, which also invested in damage relief expenses during the war. Formerly, he served as a lieutenant colonel in Leidenschaftlich’s army, and so is able to take on jobs by using connections from the time when he was a soldier even after having retired.

He met Gilbert during their days as students in the Military Academy and became close to him. As per a request by Gilbert to take care of Violet, he now watches over her in the CH Postal Company, which he himself founded after the war. Understanding that Violet still did not comprehend people’s emotions and admiring her will of wanting to become an Auto-Memories Doll, he warmly sees her growth through.

Cattleya Baudelaire CV: Endou Aya

A popular Doll who is the face of CH Postal Company. She specializes in love letters, and there is no end to the number of clients who commission her. Upon observing Cattleya notice the feeling of “love” from her client, Violet took interest in Auto-Memories Dolls.

Amongst the Dolls employed in CH Postal Service, she’s the one with the longest career on the job, and so she watches over Violet with her juniors as the latter begins her own. She is an old acquaintance of Hodgins’s, and so she tags along with him in a friendly relationship to give advice about Violet and about work.

Episode 2

Erica Brown CV: Chihara Minori

An Auto-Memories Doll who works at the CH Postal Company. She was inspired by the novels of the writer Molly, and thought that she also wanted to write texts that could resonate with people’s hearts, thus aspiring to become an Auto-Memories Doll. However, due to her introverted personality, she tended to struggle in her interactions with costumers, and inwardly embraced anxiety while wondering if she was actually not suited to be an Auto-Memories Doll.

When meeting Violet for the first time, she could not fathom why the latter wanted to become an Auto-Memories Doll, but upon being touched by her straightforward desire to understand what “I love you” meant, Erica reminisced to her own dreams.

Benedict Blue CV: Uchiyama Kouki

A delivery boy (postman) of the CH Postal Company. He mainly does deliveries by bike. He appears to have an obsession with dressing styles, and so does not wear the company’s uniform. He seems to be the rude type at first glance due to not being too friendly, but also has a kindhearted side that casually showed concern for Violet, who had just barely joined the CH Postal Company.

He never stops quarreling with Cattleya over trivial matters, but he is trusted as a comrade who had been supporting the company along with Hodgins ever since its foundation day.

Bridget CV: Aizawa Yurika

A female costumer who came to the CH Postal Company for a ghostwriting request. Her hand had been asked in marriage by a young man who had started an automotive business, and so she commissioned an Auto-Memories Doll to ghostwrite a letter of response.

Bridget was overcome with the desire to attract the affection of the one that had asked her in marriage and test his sincerity. However, Violet was unable to grasp Bridget’s true intentions while ghostwriting the letter, which had her enraged.

Nerine & Lilian CV: Saitou Aya || CV: Hikisaka Rie

Female staff members who work as receptionists at the CH Postal Company’s front desk. They deal with the costumers who visit the post office. Same as with Auto-Memories Dolls, the reception is one of the fields in which socially progressing women are active.

Episode 3

Luculia Marlborough CV: Tadokoro Azusa

A girl aspiring to become a Doll, who attends the Auto-Memories Doll Preparatory School. The trigger being that they were paired together to write letters during a school activity, she started getting along with Violet. As Violet receives a critique from the teacher Rhodanthe and becomes upset, Luculia brims with sympathy and tries to make her feel better by showing her the beautiful view of Leiden from a bell tower.

On the other hand, she was unable to convey to her older brother Spencer, who suffered from emotional after-effects of the war, that she was “happy he at least was alive”, and so was burdened with worries. However, her feelings were delivered to him through a letter that Violet wrote in her stead.

Spencer Marlborough CV: Kimura Subaru

Luculia’s older sibling. He fought as a soldier during war times, but the western battlefield he had been assigned to was invaded, and so he lost his parents, who had come to a western city for work. He convinced himself that this was his own responsibility and wound up with psychological problems. Even as the war ended, he would drink continuously regardless of whether it was during the day or at night, unable to lead a proper lifestyle.

Through the letter that Violet delivered, he realized the feelings of his only blood relative Luculia, and gradually recovers. Later on, he visited the CH Postal Company in order to send Luculia a letter.

Rhodanthe CV: Nozawa Yukari

An instructor of the Auto-Memories Doll Preparatory School. She upholds the goal of nurturing “optimal Dolls” and works hard on teaching. She taught in a way that rubs where it hurts even on Violet, who was brilliant in the subjects, by stating things such as, “What you ghostwrote cannot be called a ‘letter’”, and did not break her strict posture in order to raise optimal Dolls.

Once the course ended, she read Luculia’s letter and acknowledged Violet’s graduation, for she was the one who had ghostwritten said letter as per accepting Luculia’s request.

Episode 4

Iris Cannary CV: Tomatsu Haruka

A newbie Doll from the CH Postal Company. She admired working women and moved to the capital Leiden from her hometown Kazaly. She had just become employed after finishing going through the Auto-Memories Doll Preparatory School. She was still in the process of maturing her will towards work, but was not following it through on the inside, and so she ended up going round in circles sometimes.

When Violet joined the CH Postal Company, Iris did not welcome her into becoming an Auto-Memories Doll, but as they went together to Kazaly on a business trip, the distance between their hearts shortened through Violet ghostwriting letters to her parents.

Eamonn Snow CV: Inagaki Takuya

A male childhood friend of Iris’s, who lives in Kazaly. He received a love confession from Iris in the past, but was unable to view their relationship as anything other than childhood friendship and rejected her feelings.

Iris’s Mother CV: Soumi Youko

Iris’s mother, who lives in Kazaly. She was worried for her only daughter, who had moved to the capital city to work, she used a fake name, made a request to CH Postal Company and called Iris over. Despite showing support for Iris as a Doll, wishing for her daughter’s happiness, she made a plan to throw a birthday party for Iris, but her thoughts ended up crossing purposes with Iris’s feelings.

Iri’s Father CV: Matsumoto Yasunori

Iris’s father, who lives in Kazaly. Just as the mother, he was worried about Iris. He came to know about his daughter’s serious feelings regarding her job upon reading the letter ghostwritten by Violet, and saw off his daughter as she headed to Leiden once again.

Episode 5

Charlotte Abelfreya Drossel CV: Nakajima Megumi

Third princess of the Drossel Kingdom. She was raised by the court lady Alberta. Her upbringing is that of a great princess, but on the inside, she is but a 14-year-old crybaby girl in love. In preparation for a tradition of Drossel Kingdom, the ritual of “Public Love Letters”, she gave thorough thought to her marriage with Prince Damian of the Fluegel Kingdom.

Nevertheless, she was unable to see the prince’s true intentions in the beautiful texts written in his Public Love Letters, and so she became anxious. As per a suggestion of Violet, who had been invited for the sake of ghostwriting her Public Love Letters, she wrote the love letters with her own words and conveyed her feelings.

Alberta CV: Koyama Mami

A court lady of Drossel Kingdom. She had served the court since before Charlotte had been born and watched over the latter’s growth, raising her as if she were her own child. She knew Charlotte better than anyone else, enough to realize that Charlotte was not satisfied with the reply from Prince Damian, which had been written by an Auto-Memories Doll. On Charlotte’s wedding day, she endured her loneliness and sent the latter off with a bright face.

Damian Baldur Fluegel CV: Tsuda Kenjirou

First prince of the Fluegel Kingdom, a neighboring nation of the Drossel Kingdom. He has the right to inheriting the throne of Fluegel Kingdom, but has never pretended to be composed. Due to him coming to talk to Charlotte on her birthday as she was alone in a garden of white camellias, their engagement happened.

Afterward, he came to know about Charlotte’s passionate feelings for him through their love letters, and becomes determined to marry her. He proposed to Charlotte in the garden of white camellias where they had first met. After their wedding, he took zealous care of national affairs along with Charlotte.

Episode 6

Leon Stephanotis CV: Uemura Yuuto

A staff member of the codex department in the Shaher Astronomical Observatory. In his childhood, he watched his mother abandon him and leave home to search for his father, who belonged to the literature collecting department and had gone missing, thus becoming distrustful of women and of romantic love. He was also disgusted by Auto-Memories Dolls because of this, yet wound up falling in love with Violet at first sight upon meeting her. As he squeezed out some courage and invited her to an astronomical observation, he realized that a different special someone is reflected in Violet’s eyes, perceiving the end of his short-lived love.

With his meeting with Violet as the trigger, he decided to become a literary collector like his father.

Kile Zenich CV: Yokota Daisuke

A staff member of the codex department in the Shaher Astronomical Observatory, who lives in the same dorm room as Leon.

As the complete opposite of Leon, he was happy that Auto-Memories Dolls were coming to the workplace of the codex department, which was lacking in women. He was chosen to pair with Iberis from the Fujimi Post Office, and the two of them got along with each other as they proceeded working together, so he made active moves, such as inviting her to the observation of the Alley Comet.

He also displays a friendly side that is familiar with Leon, who was bullied by the people around him for not having parents, and worries about the latter’s relationship with Violet.

Le Verrier CV: Hoshino Mitsuaki

The section chief of the codex department in the headquarters of the Shaher Astronomical Observatory. He commands the staff that works in the codex deparment. He invited the Auto-Memories Dolls who visited the headquarters, explaining to them the contents of their job. His thoughtfulness towards his work is extremely high, enough for him to discuss about the rare documents and records about to be lost.

Iberis Konoue & Bluebell Junoa  CV: Doi Mari || CV: Yuzuki Shouko

Classmates who attended the same Auto-Memories Doll preparatory school as Violet. They finished the course before Violet did, and while Iberis was employed by the Fujimi Postal Office, Bluebell was employed by her hometown’s postal agency, the two of them working as Auto-Memories Dolls. They reunited with Violet through the job at Shaher’s headquarters.

Episode 7

Oscar Webster CV: Taki Satoshi

A worldwide famous and renowned dramatist. He lost his beloved daughter Olivia, leading his life surrendering himself to alcohol due to the shock.

In order to finish his new play, he made a request to the CH Postal Company, and upon meeting Violet, he saw that she had the same hair color as Olivia and was reminded of his deceased daughter, which wound up disturbing his heart. However, as Violet showed Oscar the miracle of walking onto the surface of a lake, which Olivia had told him that she wanted to show him when she was still alive, he was able to rid himself of the darkness that he had been carrying in his heart.

Olivia Webster CV: Senbongi Ayaka

Oscar’s only daughter, who has a lovely smile.

Even after losing her mother to illness, so as not to make her father worry, she would entretain him by smiling incessantly. She used to like her light blue parasol and waterfowls, and had promised Oscar to show him that she would jump over the lake in their backyard with said parasol someday. However, Olivia was also plagued with an incurable disease, and contrary to her father’s wishes, her life came to an end.

Episode 8

an orphan girl CV: Ishikawa Yui

An orphan girl found by the military in a northern battlefield. All information such as her place of birth, real name and the whereabouts of her parents are unknown. Her body age was of about 10 years, yet she could not speak properly, and was mostly unable to communicate with people.

She was taken in by Gilbert and joined the Continental War between North and South.

Gilbert Bougainvillea CV: Namikawa Daisuke

A major of Leidenschaftlich’s army. He was born to a famous household, a family that had remained in the military continuously from generation to generation, and had led life fervorously fulfilling his responsibilities as such.

During the Continental War between North and South, he received an orphan girl from his older brother Dietfried as a “weapon”. He gave the name “Violet” to the girl who had none, telling her that she should become a person fitting of said name.

He was fatally injured during the last battle at Intense, leaving to Violet the words “I love you” and going missing in action.

Episode 9

Violet Evergarden CV: Ishikawa Yui

Through working as an Auto-Memories Doll, Violet was touched by many sorts of emotions. And so, she came to realize that there are definitely emotions within her as well. She was able to understand feelings she had never noticed until then; for that part, her sadness towards the fact that Gilbert is gone deepens, and it was painful to accept her past, from which she could not erase the things she had done. Her past could not be erased, yet she realized that neither could her memories with the people she had met nor the ghostwritten letters from her new life as an Auto-Memories Doll, and decides to move on.

Roland CV: Kagami Riki

An elderly postman who works at the CH Postal Company. He is an old man whose plentiful beard causes an impression.

He would watch over the lifestyles of the young ones with a cheerful smile, to the point of eating fried noodles with Benedict out of consideration, as the latter was treated coldly by Nerine and Lilian, and delivering a letter to Violet, who had locked herself in her room.

Every letter contains the precious feelings of someone. The words that Violet told Ann, “there is no such thing as a letter that needn’t be delivered”, were said by Roland to Violet.

Episode 10

Ann Magnolia CV: Morohoshi Sumire

The daughter of Clara, Violet’s client. She lives with her mother in a large manor in the outskirts of their town. She believed Violet to be a real doll and treated her as such. She would ask the latter to tie her hair and read picture books, thus becaming emotionally attached to Violet, but those were signs that she had wanted her mother, who was bedridden due to a disease, to do all of it instead.

She felt that her mother did not have life expectancy, and so begged Violet not to steal the little time she had left to spend with her mother. She was gently soothed by Violet, who knew of the whole situation, and parted from her with a smile in the end.

Clara Magnolia CV: Kawasumi Ayako

She had lost her husband in the war and lived together with her small daughter Ann in the manor. She suffered from sickness, and realizing that she had not much time left, she wrote letters together with Violet for 50 years in the future addressed to Ann.

Upon finishing preparing the latters that would be delivered after her death, she spent her remaining time with Ann, departing to heaven along with the arrival of spring.

Ellis CV: Horikoshi Mami

A servant who works in the manor. As Clara suffered from the disease, she began to take care of Ann, and is responsible for all of the housework in the manor. She was aware of the contents of Clara’s commission, and during the times when Violet was typing out the letters, she was attentive of not letting Ann go to the two.

Episode 11

Aidan Field CV: Asanuma Shintarou

A young male Soldier from the southern part of Ctrigall. When being recruited as a soldier, he found an advertisement of the CH Postal Company and made a request for ghostwriting. However, he was drafted to the front lines of a civil war and shot by the Anti-Peace Faction, finding himself on the verge of death. At that time, he met Violet, who had accepted his ghostwriting request and come rushing to him. And so, as his consciousness faded, he entrusted to her his feelings addressed to his parents and beloved girlfriend, Maria.

In his last moments, he was able to convey the words “I love you” to Maria through his letter.

Maria CV: Sudou Yumi

A childhood friend of Aidan’s, who lives in his hometown. She was raised together with Aidan since babyhood, and he used to show affection for her as if she were his younger sister. Love had blossomed between them when Aidan was still in their hometown, and so she kept waiting for him to return safely, but her wish did not come true.

She received the last letter from Aidan delivered by Violet, and amidst her sadness, she expressed her gratitude.

Ale Koster CV: Sasaki Takuma

A boy soldier who was in the same troop as Aidan. As Aidan did not have anything to use his money on, he suggested Aidan to write letters to his homeland. He was the youngest of the troop and close to Aidan, but was met with an attack from the enemy, losing his life amidst despair.

Lindsey Nicks CV: Akagi Susumu

The master sergeant of the troop that Aiden belonged to. As a civil war broke in Ctrigall, he gathered the soldiers and headed to their base in Menace. However, he was shot by the Anti-Peace Faction led by Isidor and collapsed.

Episode 12

Elias Vandal CV: Sakuya Shunsuke

President of the Vandal Aerial Post Office, which he runs in Ctrigall, and certified pilot. He rides a two-seat monoplane. He has a lively personality, and taking a liking on Violet, who did not reflect on danger and attempted to go to the battlefield her client was in, he rode her to the Menace Base. Afterwards, he also lent his utmost strength to her and took her to Aidan’s hometown.

Toby Sewlyn CV: Kobayashi Chikahiro

An employee of the Vandal Aerial Post Office. He is puzzled by Violet’s request of wanting to go to Menace Base, which is at the forefront of the battlefield, but together with the president, Vandal, he helps fulfill said request. He refers to Vandal as “boss”.

Isidor CV: Mikami Satoshi

A member of the rebel faction’s force, which had raised the flag of resistance against peace. After the war, he had been imprisoned in a military camp of the Galdarik Empire, yet succeeded in escaping through the guidance of Brigadier-General Merkulov. He led the remaining soldiers and took part in an operation to destroy the Intercontinental Railway. When the strategy was taking place, his flank was shot by Dietfried on top of the train and he fell onto the railing.

Brigadier-General Merkulov CV: Hirota Kousei

A brigadier-general of Galdarik Empire’s army. He served as the captain of the troops that conquered Intense. Many of his fellow man were killed by Violet during her days as a girl soldier, and despises her as the cause of Galdarik Empire’s surrender.

The soldiers that had fought with their lives on the line for Galdarik Empire, which was defeated, were spoken ill of by the citizens, and indignant of their situation of mistreatment, he revolted as a member of the Anti-Peace Faction. He attempted to destroy the Intercontinental Railway, which was in part a symbol of peace, and take advantage of the commotion in order to have Intense back, but was once again hindered by Violet and disappeared into the darkness.

Episode 13

Dietfried Bougainvillea CV: Kiuchi Hidenobu

A colonel of Leidenschaftlich’s navy. He is the eldest son of the Bougainvillea family and Gilbert’s older brother. As the polar opposite of the serious Gilbert, he would let his hair grow long and his bad conduct would stand out.

Albeit his actions not showing it, he cherishes Gilbert. Unable to accept Gilbert’s disappearance, he one-sidedly decided that Violet was to blame for the fact that Gilbert could not be saved, burdening himself with thoughts that had no outlet.

However, through the incident with the Intercontinental Railway, he acknowledged Violet and allowed her to meet his mother, Mrs. Bougainvillea, in person.

Mrs. Bougainvillea CV: Takashima Gara

Gilbert and Dietfried’s mother. Her memory is becoming faint, and she currently lives quietly in the Leiden residence of the Bougainvillea family. She thinks very fondly of her two sons, and while her chest ached with Gilbert’s disappearance, she spoke kind words to Violet, who had been living her life burdened with the same pain.

My first post...

I don’t even know where to begin with this...I have been through and done things that you wouldn’t believe if you know me. Let’s start this thing out right with my younger years. I don’t remember much of living in Canada as we moved to the United States when I was about to start the 7th grade. We would visit my Moms hometown every summer. My very German grandmother, Gertrude, lived there in the same house my mother had grown up in with her 2 sisters and her brother. The basement to their home had been created with a shovel and a bucket. The 2 bedrooms in the basement were what you’d imagine in some of these horror/drama movies. Dimly lit with a single light bulb in the middle of a room surrounded with gray cinder block walls and gray concrete floors. Once you step out of the 2 basement rooms you were walking in dirt, around the furnace to get to the wooden plank stairs to join the rest of the family. As a family I have so many fond memories of my grandmas house. The firepit in the back yard where my dad would play his guitar, and generic as it sounds sing kumbya. My brother, Eric, my cousins and myself being country kids running around with sticks we had put in the fire so they’d glow red. Most of my first memories are from here. When we would come to visit in the summer. The house was around two and a half miles from the little town of Hobson. Hobson has a little outdoor city pool and for a dollar you could spend all day in it. And we did. Every day for 3 months. My brother and I were fish here. We made friends here that we would see every summer and we looked forward to it. Little did we know those friends would become more than occasional as we moved from Gibbons, Alberta, Canada to this little town of 200 people. This town where being Canadian meant nothing more than what Southpark had taught us. Being an outsider in a town where my class would have a total of 13 people in it was not an easy hurdle to get over. There aren’t options. There weren’t groups. I was bullied. Not beat up, though I was beat on. I was bullied emotionally as these small town boys had something to prove. Granted I was a short, staulky and awkward kid. I played football and basketball like every boy in these small schools do. I was not good at either. I gave up on basketball all together once I got into high school but I kept trying with football. And I still sucked. Then out of the blue I had a growth spurt. A very painful growth spurt. It seemed as I left school after my sophmore year and grew 5 inches by the time I was starting my junior year. I had grown from 5’9” tall to 6’2” extremely quickly. All of a sudden the basketball coach wanted me to give it another shot. But I was no longer a basketball player. I was a football player. And very shitty football player. With this new found stature I wasn’t getting bullied much anymore. But I sure remember how it felt to be the butt of everyone’s joke. I treat people as I would want to be treated. Better even. This first post has gone on a few tangents but it got me here...I have been bullied and it didn’t feel good at the time. It felt like it was never going to end. But it did. And I am a better person because of it. Because I know how low someone can knock you down and keep you there. I know everyone has a battle of their own. I know I don’t want to be the guy making anyone feel the way I felt. So I try my best to live a positive life and respect EVERYONE who has not proven themselves unworthy of this respect. This positive outlook on life will sure come in handy 2 years ago (May 2017) when out of nowhere I lose control of my body below my neck overnight. I’ll get into this another day. It’s Friday, Feb. 15 2019 and it’s a 3 day weekend. I’m looking forward to some time with Presley and some time working in the garage. Hope you all (hopeful) have a great weekend and stay safe.

a collection of research exploring the idea, that if not for wynonna earp’s low budget and physical filming location, purgatory and its key landmarks should have been based in the united states,            around the colorado river specifically.  !important: earp roleplayers are more than welcome to also adopt this divergence if they agree with it, and may 100% feel free to REBLOG this post. please remember when interacting with my character, in all verses, that they are from purgatory, colorado, and not from canada. if after reading this, you feel bothered, please let me know and we can absolutely follow writers’ show canon in our threads!!

this divergence is strongly opinionated. the writers of the show have confirmed the plot setting for the television series wynonna earp, is in fact located in alberta, canada. i am 100% aware that alberta is absolute show canon. however, as a roleplayer, creative writer, and western fanatic, i can neither ignore, nor let wyatt earp and doc holliday’s history get completely washed away for the sake of filming convenience. make no mistake. i love the show, the storyline, and i love the characters immensely;  but because of both the comic book series, and nonfictional history, their story’s location does not make any sense to me or add up at all. 

☆  // PART I. WYATT’S JOURNEY.

first, let’s begin with wyatt earp’s original routes and a few historical events. i’ve taken the time, and mapped wyatt and doc holliday’s trail out below in order. they were obviously riding on horseback and taking ferries or trains, so they wouldn’t have been using main roads or highways ( although busy trails later became paved highways and roads throughout america ). at only one point does wyatt travel through canada and it is during his two, long journeys to alaska. as you can see below, he really goes nowhere near alberta or calgary on his way to his next stop, seattle, washington. 

it would make way more sense for purgatory to be located somewhere in the united states, in one of the towns wyatt earp lived or stayed in for a prolonged period of time. not to mention the old west  is well... united states history, and all notable events regarding the old west happened in the states. the original 1993 wynonna earp comics even pay homage to places like tombstone ( and can i mention when the t.v series says they’re loosely based on the comics, they are hardly anything like them? like barely even remotely? ). it mentions white trash and trailer parks, hill billys, pabst blue ribbon, you name every southern stereotype, and they cover it. no surprise, it is based in america.

but that’s totally besides the point, and another post probably worth making entirely. let’s get back to the real wyatt earp and docs holliday’s actual history. below are some maps, and i’ve linked bigger versions so they’re easier for y’all to see.

exhibit one: map a.  ↳ this displays his route from dodge city in 1875, up until his last ride to los angeles where he would also die in 1923. this map is all prior to docs death specifically, which is extremely important. why? because doc had obvious connections to both constance clootie and bulshar. this has become even even more so evident in season 3. wyatt earp did not travel through canada until after docs actual death. this alone raises a red flag as someone who thinks placing purgatory in canada was an easy cop-out by show writers, and as someone who often ponders plot holes in the show’s storyline. 

another point i have to to stress, is that a majority of wyatt earp’s time with doc holliday throughout life was spent in the southwestern united states. their stomping grounds are where a majority of the route lines cross on the map, and they traveled between each of those cities, owning saloons, gambling, hunting outlaws, etc.. countless times. i’ll have more to add about this later under section iii, which heavily regards the revenants.

exhibit two: map b. ↳ map b is probably the most important of all three. it depicts what his ride would have looked like from wrangell, ak to nome, and then from wrangell, ak to seattle, wa. google maps actually wouldn’t let me map the whole thing through from idaho and washington to alaska, because fun fact, you have to fly and take ferries to get around from the usa to those alaskan towns. phew, can you imagine wyatt’s adventure to alaska on horseback and water?? his wife actually tried to stop him from making the journey because she was pregnant at the time, but of course, he saw an opportunity for wealth and didn’t listen.

alberta is a far stretch out of the way. he would have had to go over or around the canadian rockies, and since he was traveling to and from alaska from either washington state and/or idaho with a clear destination in mind, it would make no logical sense whatsoever. the red triangle, accurately labeled show’s location wtf??  is where the show’s canon ghost river triangle is located. i know what you’re probably thinking, they never say it straight up in the series,             but writer’s confirmation aside, upon researching there is one particular episode which gave us show purgatory’s exact location right away. here is a picture of waverly in s01e03, with a map of purgatory. . . and here is another .... and now here is an actual, real map which indisputably matches waverly’s layout. note: those are not my screencaps, you can find the original post i got them from here !!

exhibit three: map c. ↳ vildal, california is where he built his home in 1911.  the earps bought a small cottage in vidal, the only home they ever owned. beginning in 1911 and until Wyatt's health began to fail in 1928, Wyatt and sadie earp summered in Los Angeles and spent the rest of the year in the desert working their claims. The "happy days" mine was located in the whipple mountains a few miles north of vidal.  wyatt had some modest success with the happy days gold mine, and they lived on the slim proceeds of income from that and oil wells.  ( source:  wikipedia. )

so, my question is likely the biggest plot hole in the whole freaking television series. how the heck did wyatt’s family homestead end up all the way near calgary, alberta, canada?? the show writers ignore this entirely and uses an insane amount of liberties. wyatt never had any children to begin with, but if one wants to paint the picture of family, love, loyalty, and closeness as they do on the show, i would think that the earps would have remained somewhere closer to wyatt’s grave. at the very least in the same country.

the other major thing to take into consideration, is that by the time map b and map c were traveled, real doc holliday was also dead and no longer amongst the living. i bet your thinking,  ❝   okay so maybe vidal, california would have been an alright place for the show to take place, since that was wyatt’s actual only home.  ❞  and i totally agree, but the more i thought about making this wynonna’s hometown and ground zero for the homestead, the harder i could picture the gang there. problem is, the landscape is nothing but desert. it’s hot and arrid. in vidal there are there are no prairie winds, or great plains, or chinook rocky mountain sunsets. on the show we see mountains, rivers, forests, and more importantly, large amounts of snow. 

this leads the divergence trail back to none other than the myth, the man, and the legend, doc holliday. let’s dive a little more into his relationship with wyatt in the next section.

☆  // PART II. DOC AND WYATT.

how wyatt and doc met in history & the show. ↳ earp had run two cowboys out of wichita earlier in 1878. during the summer, the two cowboys—accompanied by another two dozen men—rode into dodge and shot up the town while galloping down front street. they entered the long branch saloon, vandalized the room, and harassed the customers. hearing the commotion, earp burst through the front door, and before he could react, a large number of cowboys were pointing their guns at him. 

in another version, there were only three to five cowboys. in both stories, holliday was playing cards in the back of the room and upon seeing the commotion, drew his weapon and put his pistol at morrison's head, forcing him and his men to disarm, rescuing earp from a bad situation. no account of any such confrontation was reported by any of the dodge city newspapers at the time. whatever actually happened, earp credited holliday with saving his life that day, and the two men became friends.

how wyatt and doc actually parted ways in history. ↳  according to a letter written by former new mexico territory governor miguel otero, wyatt and holliday were eating at fat charlie's the retreat restaurant in albuquerque, "when holliday said something about earp becoming 'a damn jew-boy.' earp became angry and left…." holliday and dan tipton arrived in pueblo, colorado in late april 1882. doc’s death in real history. ↳ in 1887, prematurely gray and badly ailing, holliday made his way to the hotel glenwood, near the hot springs of glenwood springs, colorado. he hoped to take advantage of the reputed curative power of the waters, but the sulfurous fumes from the spring may have done his lungs more harm than good. as he lay dying, holliday is reported to have asked the nurse attending him for a shot of whiskey. when she told him no, he looked at his bootless feet, amused. the nurses said that his last words were, "this is funny.”  holliday died at 10am on november 8, 1887. he was 36.

wyatt visited sick doc before he died. ↳   wyatt heard of doc’s death shortly after he had died. he was close by in aspen, colorado at the time, and it’s thought that he may have visited doc before his death. josephine  earp told a story about sitting beside doc’s deathbed, but it’s thought that she may have confused this with another occasion ( because of old age ). she additionally gave an account of doc and wyatt’s last meeting in the lobby of a denver hotel. both men were quite upset and josie said that wyatt cried afterwards. there’s also a story that doc’s gun was also sent to wyatt although again not a lot of evidence to prove whether or not it’s true.

wynonna earp flashbacks. ↳   in s01e03, wyatt visited his bedside, where doc is very ill and lying down in a tent. it’s implied doc was resting, wyatt packed up his things for him, and dispite his sickness, earp keeps urging him to ride with him to purgatory. doc rejects knowing he can’t and says goodbye. this is likely right before he seeks out constance clootie for immortality, in whatever town they were in. there is no viable way his transformation could have happened in purgatory, because the church in wynonna’s vision quest later on was somewhere on the outskirts of town.

on the series, doc holliday had already come across constance clootie, and gained his immortality before the best friends had their argument and wyatt disowned him for becoming something of the devil’s work. wyatt also finally admits to his family being cursed. doc was also as equally heartbroken about wyatt’s opinion of his choice, and throughout the series, we see how deeply he considers and takes an earp’s opinion to heart. despite being set in modern years, and appended romantic aspects aside, his relationship with wynonna mirrors that of his and wyatts.  

consider that wyatt already killed constance clootie’s sons, and bulshar clootie is the man he was fixed on punishing for cursing him. it’s entirely plausible doc followed closely behind wyatt’s tail after being shunned, and that wherever wyatt was going was only a few days ride from doc’s staying place. the witch clootie admitted she turned doc ageless to hurt wyatt and succeeded, but we also know that where blushar goes, clootie is looking for vengeance. it’s conceivable to theorize certain suspicions such as, but not limited to; doc wanting take back his immortality due to wyatt’s rejection, and in turn while meeting clootie, got tossed with the final  seal into the well.

the “earp well” lol. ↳  we know doc winds up in a well , but it’s location seems to appear elsewhere from it’s original place on the earp property in season one’s pilot episode, to somewhere in a random forest, in s02ep08. the earp property is said by wynonna to be only 10 acres ( 0.125 sq miles ).  for a farm where you have to drive to get from point a to point b, this is not very large or inaccurate. all shots of the property are also mainly rolling farmland with no large forest vegetation resembling that of the well’s site. i’m going to chalk this discrepancy up to this scene having been in the pilot, having a low budget and limited choices for pilot filming location.

doc’s well was never on the actual earp property like some probably assume at first glance, but instead, somewhere else entirely. just go on ahead and re-watch. after retrieving peacemaker and talking to dolls, wynonna drives up to the purgatory town line, truck facing towards the town. it makes for a clear ( or not so clear ) clue hinting the well’s whereabouts. in s2ep08,  juan carlo takes wynonna outside of purgatory to the outskirts for her vision quest. the well is clearly located in that area and tied heavily to the flashback in the church. from a teen wynonna was a drifter. she could have stashed the gun in an abandoned well anywhere, somewhere safe, and no where too close to the homestead.  but here is another thought, doc and wynonna’s fates were entwined, so who knows? maybe she felt specifically drawn to that area and frequented there to clear her head when she was younger. merely a concept.

finally, bobos imprisonment in the well further proves it’s located elsewhere, since revenants can't step foot on earp land without being burned. this gives us some room to play for setting up wynonna earp’s story in colorado.

tying history and flashbacks together. ↳  this is where it gets complicated, where it’s hard to put things into words, and where my divergence really starts, because the show canon entirely ignores actual history when it comes to the true separation and deaths of both of these men.  we have no clue as to the location in either of these flashbacks on the show, but we do see wyatt is wearing a jacket and scarf. it’s apparently cold outside so there’s at least that to work with. the state of colorado has cold winters, which also works in this divergence’s favor.

if the real doc holliday died in glenn springs, colorado, and the real wyatt earp was in aspen, colorado around the time of his death, we could place purgatory somewhere in that area. doc faked his death on the series, between the time he decided he would became immortal, and the time he was thrown in the well shortly after. sewing these realities together puts purgatory in colorado. doc’s death would make the location default. in regards to the comic taking place in the deserts of the united states, this divergence will also have that covered later on.

the canadian show takes an extreme with creative freedoms and gives no resolution  whatsoever as to how wyatt earp somehow settled down in alberta, candada ( did they even do their fact checking?? ) or how every family member has lived there ever since. the actual wyatt earp had no children, and his home was and will always historically be in vidal, california. 

so, let’s make this more believable. what if in another universe that isn’t real history, but makes a hell of a lot more sense when unified with the show’s,            wyatt earp made a home in colorado after bulshar was buried?  not only close to where is thought to be his best friends grave, but where he can keep an eye on, and protect, bulshar’s remains until he dies? bobo moved him, but where were they prior? on the show wyatt is also said to have been partially involved in entombing bulshar’s body. therefore, this explanation would make 100% total sense as to why wyatt and his wife never made it to vidal, california. his life’s journey would have been stopped dead in its tracks, so he could keep the demon who cursed his family from the widows, and make sure bulshar never returned. one could claim, in a historically based, fictional western series, that wyatt earp built a ranch because of this, and settled down with his wife in a town called purgatory, colorado.

☆  // PART III. WYATT’S CURSE, THE REVS, & THE GHOST RIVER TRIANGLE.

wyatt earp’s curse. ↳  the earp curse makes all people that wyatt earp had killed in his lifetime resurrect over and over again. those revenants can only be killed by the peacemaker which only the current heir can use.           wait a minute. wynonna voice: say whaaaat?? wyatt never killed multiple people in canada. at any point in history. how would the 77 people he killed even get to canada if revenants can’t leave the ghost river triangle in the first place??         can you say, major woops? this is personally my favorite fudge up.

the ghost river triangle. ↳  the ghost river triangle is an area of cursed land, partially framed by the splitting of the ghost river into two, that imprisons the resurrected outlaws killed by wyatt earp. should a revenant cross the boundary line, they experience hell on earth. to quote waverly, in leavin' on your mind: '...everything from the mountains to where the north and south ghost rivers meet, forms the ghost river triangle. it cuts through the big city, contains thousands of square miles of forest, foothills, prairie, the badlands. and all of it...cursed.'

forest, foothills, prairie, and badlands? yeah, if we want to place divergent purgatory somewhere in the united states to make the show a little more historically accurate, the ghost river triangle definitely parallels to none other than the colorado river. the colorado river runs through colorado, utah, arizona, nevada, california, and all the way down to mexico. at least three of those states were in fact, wyatt’s stomping grounds before and after his historically recorded vendetta ride. 

not to go with some total, mythical, movie cliche here, but in an alternative wynonna world set in the united states, the ghost river triangle could have also been named by the native americans who inhabited the land along the colorado river. factually, many parts of the colorado river are actually suspected to be haunted. let’s not get too carried away, though. alberta canada is in fact home of a real place called the ghost river valley, and there’s totally no disputing that.

wyatt’s vendetta ride ↳  in history the vendetta ride was a deadly search, where wyatt lead a federal posse for outlaw cowboys they believed had ambushed, and maimed virgil earp and killed morgan earp. the earp brothers had been attacked in retaliation for the deaths of three cowboys in the gunfight at the o.k. corral on october 26, 1881. from march 20 to april 15, 1882, the federal posse searched southeast cochise county, arizona territory for suspects in both virgil's and morgan's attacks. several suspects had been freed by the court, owing in some cases to legal technicalities and in others to the strength of alibis provided by cowboy confederates. up to this point, wyatt had relied on the legal system to bring the cowboys to justice. now he felt he had to take matters into his own hands.

i could be wrong, but i have a feeling the chase for bulshar is loosely based on this part of wyatt earp’s history. the parallel of his two own brothers dying, and two of clootie’s sons dying, is a little thought provoking, no? coincidental even? an eye for an eye, perhaps? there is a lot of wyatt’s history left to be uncovered and explored, and that’s if the show writers even decide to reveal anything else at all. on the show, wyatt got innocent people killed, there was one hell of a lot of collateral damage surrounding him. 

i feel 100% comfortable standing firmly by the headcanon that after wyatt was cursed and his brothers were killed, that he went on a tear after bulshar and destroyed anyone who got in his way. this is important, because these events could be tied to his life in tombstone, arizona, and the events which took place in and after the shootout at the OK corral. if he was cursed in tombstone, then there is no way around it,          one of the ghost river triangle’s points would have to begin there.

the revmap, i mean . . . revamp. ↳ below is a map which bases a divergent ghost river triangle heavily off of history. it takes into consideration doc holliday and wyatt earp’s routes, where doc’s last known whereabouts were, where wyatt would have killed the most men, and finally, his vendetta ride. in total the divergent river triangle’s perimeter is about 2,500 miles and takes 36 hours nonstop to drive. in contrast, the show’s ghost river triangle is 617 miles and takes about only an easy 12 hours to drive from point to point. purgatory is west of denver, and the homestead is about where the house icon is.   ( larger image version is here. )

yeah okay, so the size may be of some issue, but vastness aside, there are three things this triangle does have, that the other doesn’t. firstly, historical accuracy. it includes nearly all of the areas where a number of wyatt’s targets made their peace. if we tie back to wyatt’s vendetta ride and the whole paralleling idea for a moment, many of the revenants who rode with bulshar would've died in various areas of colorado and the purgatory area. secondly, the terrain might aid with narrowing revenant whereabouts down. deserts and mountains surround a majority of these iconic towns.          and lastly another argument can be made that because some revenants do want to end the earp line, few might've simply migrated to colorado and placed themselves somewhere closer within wynonna’s line of fire.

i could continue ridiculously blabbering on and on about why i chose this location divergence for my character. everything from climate, to terrain, and how there are salt flats in utah nearby, or my really strong distaste for how the show writers erased wyatt earp and doc holliday’s real history,            but in honesty i think everything i’ve covered above nicely sums up my research and premise. anywhooo, that’s all for now folks, hope you enjoyed the read!

This rural Alberta county has a first-dose vaccination rate of only 45%. Here's why

In the small Alberta hamlet of Skiff, Cade Hollingsworth and two of his co-workers are lying on the ground next to a grain elevator, watching the clouds go by.

They're waiting for a truck to be loaded up at the farmyard just across the coulee to the north. That will take as long as it takes — they're on farmer time.

Hollingsworth works for Forty Mile Rail, a short line railway that runs between the village of Foremost and Stirling, Alta. When the grain cars finally arrive, the trio will load it up before it gets shipped to the coast.

Just a little more than 25 kilometres up the road is Hollingworth's hometown, Foremost, a community with a population of just over 500. Hollingsworth graduated with 15 students in his Grade 12 class.

"Everybody's friends. Everybody knows everybody, which can be good and bad," he said. "I think the saying, "It takes a village to raise a child,' actually is very true in the village of Foremost."

Hollingsworth says he knows he's one of the lucky ones in the world -- he's kept his job throughout the pandemic. The fact that things seem unchanged might be why his county is seeing such low vaccination rates compared to the rest of the province, Hollingsworth figures.

"Nothing changed as dramatically as I can imagine it would have in one of the bigger centres, like Calgary or Edmonton," he said. As of Friday, only 45 percent of residents in Forty Mile County over the age of 12 have received their first jab, far below the provincial average of 82 percent.

"I guess [people in urban centres] probably think of us like country hicks that don't know what's going on," Hollingsworth said. "But from what we see, what is the point, I guess? Our lives didn't change."

Health officials say the remoteness of communities like those in Forty Mile County doesn't insulate them from the spread of COVID-19 and its potentially deadly effects.

As of Friday, the county had an active case rate of 733 per population of 100k, higher than the provincial active case rate of 456 per 100,000.

"The delta variant of COVID-19 doesn't spare anyone," said Dr. Vivien Suttorp, medical officer for health for Alberta's south zone. And the province's recent implementation of a vaccine passport system has made the issue of vaccination a lot harder to ignore for residents in Forty Mile.

Businesses and venues are allowed to operate without capacity limits and other public health measures if they require proof of vaccination or a negative test result from those who enter.

Up the road from Hollingsworth and his colleagues waiting for the truck to arrive, the community of Foremost is split on the issue. Many express feelings of distrust when it comes to government and health officials. Others say they feel mass media has sensationalized the pandemic. Meanwhile, some say their neighbours have bought into conspiracy theories they've read on social media.

Given that only 38.4 percent of residents here over the age of 12 are doubly vaccinated, the reality is that businesses implementing this program could stand to lose more than half their customers if the passport doesn't convince them to get the jab.

"To me, it's unfair," said Joanne Schmidt, owner of the Main Street Cafe. "I don't think I should have the right to say, "You have to be vaccinated to come into my business.'"

Schmidt isn't adopting Alberta's restrictions exemption program at her cafe at this time, instead opting to do take-out only. Part of that, she says, is because some of her staff haven't been vaccinated.

Crystal Jahn, a waitress there, says she doesn't trust how quickly the vaccines were developed and is distrustful of both the provincial and federal governments.

"I like to say that [Premier Jason] Kenney is a liberal dressed as a conservative," Jahn says. "He's a hypocrite, you know, saying he is going to do one thing and then veer off completely to the left."

Kenney's handling of the fourth wave of the pandemic in Alberta has been under fire in recent weeks, leading political scientists to speculate it may have hurt the federal Conservatives on election night.

Schmidt says she's unsure how her decision might affect her business moving forward. Work crews who used to come in for supper and beers won't be able to do so now that Main Street has gone to takeout only.

"But I don't think most of them have their vaccine, either, so they couldn't come in anyway," she said. A common refrain among residents is that to live in Foremost is to be part of one big family. If there's ever a crisis or tragedy in the community, residents pull together to lend a hand.

But since the pandemic hit, many say there's been a noticeable split in the population between the "vaxxers and the anti-vaxxers. You know, you've got the groups that think COVID-19 is a dark web conspiracy theory," said Foremost Mayor Lorne Buis.

"Well, you're going to read what you're going to read on the Internet. If you're not fluent enough to check the facts out that you're reading further … that's on you."

Part of the issue, Buis says, is the rumour mill that can sometimes bubble up in small towns.

"In my mind, it's misinformation. They read something, and that's the honest to God truth. They haven't looked it up to make sure it's true," he said.

"One guy says something. I tell friends and they tell friends and they tell friends... Well, by the time it gets to the second set of pals, it's nowhere close to the original story, right?"

Forty Mile County says it has been supportive of AHS in setting up vaccination clinics and in disseminating information on social media and online about the benefits of vaccination.

Stewart Payne, the county's director of emergency services, says it's unclear why the county ranks close to the bottom of vaccination uptake provincially.

"There's been no surveys. There's been no studies," he said. Suttorp, the medical officer officer of health, says though the vaccination rates for Forty Mile County are very low, it's key to look at the total number of unvaccinated people in southern Alberta.

People travel, shop and visit the doctor in other communities, Suttorp says, so it's important to recognize that very few human beings are islands unto themselves.

Suttorp says when it comes to small communities in southern Alberta, immunization rates for COVID-19 mirror the uptake for childhood vaccines.

"It is the communities with low immunization rates where we have vaccine-preventable disease outbreaks — you had measles, mumps, whooping cough," she said.

"The communities where we have more children immunized, in the schools where we have children fully immunized, we don't see the disease transmission in those communities.

"So the difference, or the heterogeneity between communities, is significant in southern Alberta."

For some business owners trying to follow the COVID-19 rules and keep their heads above water, the frequent implementations and pullbacks of restrictions in the province are frustrating.

At Bobby's Bar and Restaurant, owner Charlene Rosse says she's tried to do everything she can to keep her community safe, including requiring masks, hand sanitizing and checking vaccine passports at the door.

The bar is usually like the sitcom Cheers, she says, even though the arguments taking place around Forty Mile County about COVID-19 and vaccines have begun to flare up in her bar, too. She's had to "kibosh the COVID talk" in recent months when it gets heated.

Tonight, the regulars have started to file in. Rosse knows them by name and is run off her feet by drink orders, cracking open cans of Bud Light and Kokanee.

Rosse took over running the place in June after the bar's longtime owner, Robert "Bobby" Prest, passed away from lung cancer.

"He had a heart of gold. Most people loved him," Rosse said. Rosse worked with Prest for 25 years, and she says he became like a stepfather to her. The bar meant everything to Prest, Rosse says, so it's important to her to keep it alive.

Right above the bar at Bobby's, just steps away from a decoration that reads "it's best to let Bob win at crib," is a photo of the eponymous owner. Right before his death, Prest recorded a video expressing his concerns that COVID-19 was killing small business.

"Bob built this right from the ground up, this place. I don't want to let it go down," Rosse said. "That kinda wants me to fight to keep it going even harder, for him."

How to Stay Disciplined While Saving For a Long Trip

If there is one thing I struggle with the most, it is finding the discipline to save for a long trip.

At first, it was just my school schedule that kind of conditioned me to travel for nothing longer than a month.

Then I realized, I kept going on short trips because once you get a taste of the traveling life, you just don’t want to stop. For me at least, when I would return home from a trip, my biggest concern was when can I travel again?

    Because after epic adventures, you come home feeling like society is just bland and school and work are the biggest drag. So the minute I would have enough money for my next adventure, whether it be a week or a month, I would go!

But then I would come back feeling unsatisfied, because I didn’t have enough time to get to know the country, and my wanderlust came back ten times stronger. Soon enough, the temptation to go on another short trip emerged.

My news feed was full of people starting their next trip. My travel friends told you to meet up with them for the next adventure, and I even started looking at cheap flights around the world. But before I accidentally ended up in Peru for two weeks, I needed to figure out how to stay on track for my big trip. My trip that will take more than half a year to save for.

But a trip that would be so worth it, because I would see Thailand, Vietnam, the Philippines, Australia, and New Zealand. But it can’t happen if Peru comes up in August or if Greece happens in September.

Ultimately, I’ve learned that it comes down to do you want a small cookie now or do you want the whole box later?

So what did I do to remind myself that the whole box of cookies is worth the hassle?

Make a Vision Board

Have I already lost you? A vision board is a board with pictures of what you want to accomplish.

In this case, my mission is to stay on track and save for Thailand, Vietnam, the Philippines, Australia, and New Zealand. So I would cut out pictures of volunteering with elephants, the beaches in Vietnam, the epic diving in the Philippines, kangaroos and the Great Barrier Reef in Australia, the glowing worm cave in New Zealand, and lots of money!

Then I would put it somewhere in my room that guarantees I regularly see it. This technique is literally keeping your eye on the prize.

It will constantly remind you why you’re doing what you’re doing and will also help you visualize your dream trip. When you can do this, it makes the trip feel more real. When you can see your trip and get excited about it, you’re less likely to think about your small trip to Peru.

    Try To Be Thankful For Where You Are Right Now

I live in southern big city North America and although the concrete jungle is just not for me, I still find a few reasons to like it. My friends and family are here. It is not cold here.

Even though I absolutely love hostels, nothing beats the comfort of home and it’s easy to work on my blog while I’m at home. We have great hiking in North America.

This is an amateurs list, I know, but if you start writing why you’re grateful for where you currently are, it can really put things in perspective. It will give you a more optimistic viewpoint on what your town has to offer, and remind you that you don’t need travel to make your life awesome.

Your life is just awesome, because you’re an awesome person.

So if you can make anywhere awesome, you’ll be able to tolerate your hometown a bit more and stay in place until your big trip!

But Also Feel Free To Spice Up Your Life A Little!

If you ever get bored of the same old routine while you’re saving, shake things up!

One of the reasons I love travel is because I am constantly exposed to new and exciting things. But this isn’t exclusive to travel!

If the wanderlust is coming at you hard, try to pick up a new hobby like rock climbing or acro yoga, or go out with your friends. Even just changing up your routine a bit can help. Really anything that makes you happy, do it!

Exercise is seriously one of the best things that you can try though! It is just known to make people happy for some reason! But cookies after working out also make me happy!

    Tell Other People about Your Long Trip

When you say things out loud, believe it or not, it has a better chance of become reality.

This is because when you say your thoughts out loud, you verify to yourself that it will happen.

Try saying “I will be going to Thailand in January” instead of “I might” or “I think I’ll be going to Thailand in January.” Not only does this method help you make your trip more likely to happen, but it also helps keep you accountable.

You can even go one step further and ask someone to keep you accountable. Better yet, you can even start sharing your financial progress with people. Sound crazy? It’s actually just the power of social pressure, but in a positive way. This little pressure works in our everyday life as well.

It’s probably the reason you didn’t cancel lunch with your friend even though you really would have just rather taken a nap. Well, it works the same way when you’re saving for travel. If you share your financial progress with your best friends and family, you’ll still probably stay on track and achieve your goal because of social pressure.

But that pressure would be heightened if you post your progress on social media.

If you aren’t comfortable doing that, that is perfectly understandable! But if you are, go for it! It almost guarantees that you’ll stay on track and save for your long trip. You can even start a gofundme page if you want people to join your journey.

Curb Your Wanderlust By Going On A Domestic Or Super Cheap Trip!

Saving for a long trip doesn’t have to mean all work and no play!

If you’re absolutely dying to go somewhere, check out some cheap domestic places to visit for a weekend or week. You can even use your travel connections!

By the end of June, I’ll be going to Florida to see one of my best friends and hopefully do some ocean loving! In October, I plan to go to Canada for four days to see my sister-in-law’s family and check out the Banff National Park in Alberta, hopefully to hike some mountains and see the rare northern lights.

But I don’t plan to spend much money at all, because I’m close to people there. So, I won’t have to pay for accommodation or transportation.

This will cure my wanderlust, allow me reconnect with amazing people, and help me stay on track for my big adventure!

I’m really fortunate that no one has really hurt me since, I guess, high school! And I definitely forgive high school shenanigans because wow, I thought my friends and I were mature then but this was not true!

4: what’s something you really want right now?

a really awesome nerd dance party!

5: are you afraid of falling in love?

No!

6: do you like the beach?

I used to love the beach, or any water, a lot! But I had some weird ear injury, and now it’s hard for me to swim much without getting ear problems. So I still really like the beach, but it makes me feel a bit wistful.

Yep.

Art museums, because zoos are nice but they also make me sad when animals aren’t well cared for or don’t have enough space! It would be so sad to live your life on display. That said a lot of zoos care for their animals in an amazing way – unfortunately too often, it seems like this isn’t the case though :/

As in, my first one to ever be added? I guess my parents, so my whole life. As in, the person I’ve texted the most over my entire lifetime? Since high school. As in, the person I talk to most over the phone now? Also since high school.

No! They’re all great people but our relationships ended for good reasons. I hang out with all of them though.

Sometimes when I’m home, but honestly my mom does way more of the cooking work even then! The balance is slowly shifting in my favour as I learn better to make things my mom likes and get less lazy!

We lived 9 timezones apart with limited internet access, then turned out to have very different attachment styles! But we’re still like. almost best friends! And it turns out this is a much better dynamic for us!

Non non!

Yes! Almost all of them, though since I’ve moved countries sometimes not in the frequency I would like. Like I really wish I could talk to my friends B.D. and T.J. more! But they’re both in California time.

A., who was one of my best friends but in retrospect I was definitely gay for;;;; (A. is most definitely Very Straight.)

Yes, it’s probably not a for sure dealbreaker but it is almost certainly a dealbreaker.

THE MOVIE HAD AMAZING BABY SPIDERMAN and I got to get really excited with a friend about cute. baby. spiderman. who i love deeply.

My mom! Honestly I only call my mom.

…no.

…knowledge of algebraic geometry? Ok, on a personal level, I wish I was better at talking to friends about personal issues?  I used to be really good at this, but over the past few years I just have been really fortunate and I haven’t really had many personal issues at all! So I’ve become used to dealing with them myself, and I haven’t been very good at this at all.

90: have you ever trusted someone too much?

People have betrayed my trust, yes. But I’m happy I trusted them because even if it didn’t work out, the alternative of being suspicious seems too dark!

Yes! the outdoors is nice and i want it in me!

Yes! most of my friends are women!

This blog post, too, is late. Most bloggers had their “Year in Review” up the second the New Year chimed in. I, on the other hand, needed a full 18 days (and maybe a few bottles of wine) to figure out how I felt about 2016. Needless to say, if you need 18 days to reflect upon a year, maybe it wasn’t your best yet? I came to the conclusion, after an emotional year of adjusting in a new country, that just maybe, I hadn’t taken advantage of my full year of supposed unemployed bliss.

In reflecting upon the year, the first few months were slow. I finished up my final law exams and we bought a house. Money was not being directed towards travelling at all. Nonetheless, we were still lucky enough to take a few trips away. Here’s where we went in 2016:

Durban & Cape Town, South Africa

Our first holiday in 2016 was actually a two week visit back to South Africa in April. We spent a week in Durban (my hometown) and a week in Cape Town (Craig’s hometown). We celebrated Craig’s 30th, our engagement and a best friend’s baby shower in a matter of days. It was chaos, and I’d probably never do it again – at least not in such a rushed manner – but we learn from these mistakes. Our highlights of the trip have to be the night we spent at the Oyster Box Hotel as well as wine-tasting at Delaire Graaf in Franschhoek (one of my favourite places in the world).

Calgary, Alberta, Canada

A fun little weekend getaway in June for absolutely no reason at all other than just getting out of Barrhead and Edmonton. It’s only a 4-hour drive, so this wasn’t the only weekend we whipped off to Calgary in 2016. We also went for a weekend in April just before our trip to South Africa. We love the foodie culture in Calgary and we pretty much stuffed ourselves full the whole trip – see evidence here. But a fun highlight was the Shakespeare in the Park, pictured below. I have a feeling Calgary is just going to be one of those cities we see a lot of.

Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada

We had a quick 24-hours in the west coast city to get our Schengen visas before our European holiday in September (A South African’s struggle). The highlight of this trip? The food. All of it. But at the top of the list had to be the amazing dinner we had at Hawksworth.

Potsdam & Berlin, Germany

Our beautiful friends, Les & James, got married in Potsdam in September, and of course that was the main event and main reason we were heading to Europe. The wedding was the highlight, no doubt about it. We had an amazing weekend full of activities in Potsdam and this too, deserves it’s own blog post. What I loved about this trip, is had Les and James not had their wedding there, who knows whether we would have ever seen this city? Life lesson learned: The best life experiences can come from seeing places you didn’t think were on your list to see.

Berlin had not been high on our to-do-list but we were heading that way, so we decided to stay on for two days. We walked, and walked, and walked. The sun was belting, the temps were as high as 35/36 degrees celsius, we were suffering from a bit of jet lag and I had basically only packed clothes for a mild-Fall vacation. The highlight: sleeping, in a really nice hotel, with aircon. In all seriousness, we loved the i31 Boutque Hotel.

Paris, France

Our favourite city so far, this was the second time we had been to the City of Love. It’s so difficult to pick a highlight! It really deserves a whole post to itself. We spent nearly a full week on our European holiday here, but one of our favourite days was a quiet Sunday morning stroll when we popped into Shakespeare & Co, grabbed a book each, grabbed a coffee next door and continued exploring the streets.

Amsterdam, The Netherlands

We only spent three-ish days in this city and it seemed way too short. Nonetheless, the highlight of this trip was the spontaneous evening activities the night before we were due to leave. We booked an evening performance at the Concertgebouw and on the way stopped in at Taiko for dinner. I still dream about the Forbidden Soup I had there.

Jasper, Alberta

This one-night stay was another spontaneous trip. We were itching for a day at the spa and a really good massage and we figured, heading to the spa at Fairmont Jasper Park Lodge was our best bet. The highlight, was obviously the massage. It was amazing. So amazing that there are no pictures as evidence. Phones were hidden away in my locker and forgotten about while we enjoyed one of the best couple’s massages we’ve ever had.

Banff, Alberta

Craig’s mom had arrived to spend Christmas with us, so we wanted to take her somewhere new. It was last minute and relatively cheap, but we had an amazing time and she loved the town! The highlight: the Juniper & Bistro Hotel. We spent so much time sitting by their fireplace having drinks, warming up from the very cold days and the staff were just incredible.

 And that’s a wrap on 2016.
