Completely Harmless Ch. 21
Completely Harmless An SSO SilverGlade Re-imagining Story (Or Fix it Fan Salt fic) By Ginny O.
When Lily and her friends wanted to buy horses and were directed to the Silverglade Manor and its myriad of problems, they didn’t expect to start a revolution. They were just a bunch a stable girls. Completely harmless. Right?
A/N: Things are only canon if I say they’re canon. Pre-Saving the Moorland Stables compliant for the most part. Posted in its entirety on my website. Posted in 2000 to 4000 word bits here. Rated T for Swearing Word Count 177,577
Chapter Twenty-One Did Someone Say Ice Cream?
The email Lily received from Aaron Silverglade was next to incoherent. Oh, there were legible words, but they didn’t string together to make any sense. He sounded quite upset, as much as written words could sound upset.
Lily hopped a bus to Jorvik City and met him at Leonardo’s.
“Sir Aaron, whatever is the matter,” she asked as soon as she was certain that he had a fortifying sundae and stiff coffee in front of him. They sat under one of the umbrella tables outside of Leonardo’s.
“I don’t know what I’m doing. I’m going to fail miserably and make my mother more disappointed in me. I don’t know why I ever thought this was a good idea. Anastasia is doing so much better at this than I am and I can feel mother’s icy disapproval from here. Why can’t I be more like mother?”
Lily’s eyes widened. “Slow down! Your mother loves you. You just helped her achieve a huge victory against G.E.D. by getting rid of those oil rigs. Not that you need to do things like that for her to love you. She loves you no matter what. Now, exactly what is the problem?”
“I don’t know what I’m doing.”
“What, what?” Lily waved her spoon. “The oil rigs are gone. We’re revitalizing the paddock. The race track can now move forward.”
“With the ice cream bar,” Aaron waved his hands and then slumped.
Lily blinked rapidly. “You know everything about ice cream.”
“But, what to call it? How to decorate it? I don’t know anything about that!”
Lily reached out and grabbed his hand and squeezed it. “You don’t have to.”
“But, but,” Aaron sputtered.
“That is what professionals are for. There are professional decorators. And professional marketers.” Lily sniffed. “Really, Dame Anastasia copped out by naming the restaurant the Silver Glade. That’s an easy go to stand by.”
Aaron bit his lip hard. He dug into his ice cream and took a few bites.
“Now,” Lily took out her phone and did a search for the decorator. She found the phone number and slid her phone over to Aaron. “Here is the decorator your sister hired for the restaurant.”
Aaron stared at it.
“Call him,” Lily urged.
Aaron reached for his phone and slowly dialed the number. He explained who he was and what he was trying to do. He took the phone away from his ear and looked at it with a frown on his face, brow furrowed. “He’s on his way. Since, we’re having ice cream.”
“We must have been photographed on social media.”
“Oh dear. I hope they aren’t saying anything salacious.”
Lily did a quick search. “Not really? They don’t know who I am and I’m wearing Silverglade Clan colors.”
“Hmm,” Aaron said.
“Random employee pep talk,” Lily shrugged and put it away.
“We should be more careful,” Aaron mumbled.
“That could make things worse,” Lily told him. She ate her ice cream. “I confess I don’t know a lot about wine or ice cream. Other than it is tasty and I like eating it.”
Aaron fidgeted. “Well, the winery is a very lucrative business and it could be more so. You see, the price of wine really depends on its scarcity. A good bottle of wine can sell for at least 500 Jorvik shillings.”
Lily got out her phone and did a currency conversion. “So, 20 American dollars?” It appeared that 1 dollar equaled 25 Jorvik Shillings. And 100 Jorvik shillings equaled 1 star coin. (Lily made a note to never use star coins on the transport.) So, 100 Jorvik shillings was roughly 4 American dollars in market value.
“I suppose,” Aaron blinked. He stirred his ice cream. “Of course, the price of an individual bottle goes down as you order more volume. But depending on the amount of wine made and sold in a year, a winery as big as mothers can make 50 billion shillings a year.”
Lily did the conversion on her phone. “2 billion dollars a year?”
“Not every year and, between you and I, we aren’t currently making nearly that much as we don’t have the proper marketing or demand.” Aaron flushed. “I probably shouldn’t be telling you this.”
“Probably not,” Lily said. “But that is really interesting!”
“Wine output is determined by how many hectares of grapes you have planted. And of course, everything depends on soil salinity and the weather. We have cooler weather here in Jorvik. That all effects the taste of the wine. And if your wine doesn’t taste good and pass certain standards, you can’t price it higher. We aren’t as fussy as France,” Aaron sniffed. “But we still have standards.”
Lily grinned around a spoonful of ice cream.
The decorator literally flounced up to the table. “I hope you haven’t started talking about anything juicy without me!” He struck a pose.
“Just about wine profits,” Lily said.
“Well, say no more until I have ice cream,” the decorator sat and ordered from one of the servers. She returned quickly with his bowl of ice cream and left them.
“All right, darlings, explain everything about this wine and ice cream bar?”
Lily raised a brow at Aaron.
He floundered.
Lily decided it was probably better if she took over. “The wine cave has a room that is meant to be a tasting room,” she said. “I haven’t been in it.” Her brow furrowed and she picked up the phone and sent a text. She set the phone down. “Sir Silverglade knows a lot about ice cream and the concept is to pair ice cream dishes with wine to attract tourists with something a little different? Sir Silverglade was telling me about how our cooler weather makes the wine taste different than if we had warmer weather.”
The decorator tilted his head. “Is it even possible to pair wine and ice cream without it ending badly?”
“Small cups! Small!” Lily widened her eyes.
The decorator grinned. “The whole point of a wine tour is to get gloriously drunk and buy lots of wine you don’t need.”
Lily sighed.
Her phone buzzed. She picked it up, checked the messages and passed it to the decorator. “The tasting room.”
“Another very empty box,” the decorator sniffed. “How distressing.”
Lily rolled her eyes. “If you remember, the outside of the wine cave looks like the Parthenon or another long rectangular greek temple.”
“It’s based on the Valley of the Temples in Sicily,” Aaron said stiffly.
Lily gestured. See?
“Romantic get away for a Silverglade ancestor, I’m assuming. Sounds like a story,” the decorator smirked.
Aaron mumbled something and fiddled with his shirt sleeves.
“Continue please, a big empty room is a blank canvas, I want to hear more about your ideas.” The decorator passed the phone back to Lily.
Aaron cleared his throat. “Outside of France, many wineries maximize their profits by having different types of grapes and they grow these grapes in different areas of their property called cotes that has the best weather suited for them and we have to be very particular about soil salinity. Our Pinot Noir grapes are in the area of the winery that has the best weather due to their rather finicky and delicate nature. All of the vines at the Silverglade winery are different types of red grapes, Cabernet Sauvignon, Pinot Noir, Melbec, Merlot, Zinfandel, and Syrah.”
“Is there a reason for that?” The decorator asked. “I know that Riesling is a very popular wine to have with local foods. That is if anyone ever recommends a wine at all. But Riesling is a German white grape.”
Aaron shrugged. “I don’t know. Those are the varietals we have. We also have a Rose blended wine and a Red blend fortified wine in the style of Port for sale. We use the skin contact method to make the wine pink and take the skins out before the wine becomes deep red. It’s traditional.”
Lily bit the inside of her cheek. The Silverglades could be so stuffy.
“But the good thing about red wine is that it pairs well with our local fruits such as strawberries, blueberries, and lingonberries. You can even pair it with apples and cheese,” Aaron brightened. “For white wine, you pair it with things like peaches, orange, and melons. We don’t have those around Silverglade so, it’s all fortuitous you see.”
“Or Fruituitous,” Lily wrinkled her nose.
Aaron grimaced at the pun.
The decorator laughed. “I like you, darling,” he waved a spoon at her.
“So my ideas for ice cream feature the local produce and of course we want to use local cream products and import chocolate, everyone loves chocolate.” Aaron fiddled with his utensils. “I have a list of items. I just can’t narrow it down.”
“Why bother narrowing it down?” Lily furrowed her brow. “I think it is more important that they taste good and pair well with the wines at the winery.”
“Yes, you must have a taste test,” the decorator nodded emphatically.
“I think they go well.”
“We trust your judgement,” Lily said quickly. “Having a tasting will provide publicity for the ice cream bar and let you gauge feedback on what the people will like.”
The decorator nodded. “She’s right. Publicity is, well, queen, in this case.”
“I mean, as long as you aren’t doing anything to outre like rose or violet or lavender ice cream,” Lily said.
“We could,” Aaron murmured. “Rose and cardamom go together and you know how much mother loves cardamom. And cardamom and lingonberries go well with red wine. In some recipes you can substitute rose water for red wine.”
Lily felt the need to point out. “You denude Agnetha’s rose bushes she’ll come after you with her chainsaw no matter if you’re the son of the Baroness or not.”
The decorator burst into laughter.
Aaron pursed his lips. “Agnetha is scary. They’re old friends you know, her and my mother. Went to university together.”
“Oh good grief,” Lily groaned. “That explains so much.”
“And Lavender goes with rose wine,” Aaron added.
Lily sighed. “Yes, but they also scream snobby.”
The decorator snorted.
“Wine making is snobby,” Aaron retorted.
“Okay, make them a special at some point.” Lily waved her hand.
Aaron tried to retain what very little dignity he had. “Most of my ideas are things that people will like, vanilla and berries, chocolate and nuts, strawberry cheesecake, sea salt caramel, that sort of thing.”
“Those all sound delicious,” Lily said.
“And something with cardamom for my mother,” Aaron continued stiffly. He slumped again. “I don’t know what to call it or what I want things to look like.”
“This tasting room at least isn’t in a drafty old cellar, even if the walls look like it,” the decorator sniffed.
“Aren’t wine cellars rooms nobles actually have?” Lily tilted her head. “I mean, does the manor have one.”
“Yes, the manor has a wine cellar,” Aaron nodded. “Mother keeps all the special bottles there.”
“Then, why not call it the Wine Cellar and keep it simple, like the restaurant was simple. I mean, no one is going to care that it’s not really in a cellar. Or they shouldn’t.”
“Since the cellar of the wine cave is filled with kegs and kegs of aging wine,” Aaron murmured.
“If we call it the Wine Cellar people are going to expect grapes as décor,” the decorator sniffed.
“I don’t see why we can’t do a bit of that.”
“And too keep the walls rough.”
“Also doable,” Lily said. She raised a finger. “Wait, why not face them with marble slabs. That way they can look “rough” and be fancy at the same time.”
“We don’t want it to have the same exact look at the Silver Glade, but the two should say they belong in the same place, did you just say marble slabs,” the decorator raised a brow.
Lily shrugged. “It’s an idea.”
“It’s going to be cold.”
“It’s summer,” Lily reminded him.
Aaron ducked his head and smiled.
“Let me see what other ice cream parlors are doing,” the decorator picked up his phone. “You never know what you can use for ideas.”
He scrolled. “All right, modern and elegant but with old world flair. I’m seeing two that have ideas that could work. This ice cream parlor in Prague that turns into a bar during the evening, and this other one in Palma, Spain. I’m thinking more the floor and the fact they have the greenery on the ceiling.” He turned the phone around so Aaron could look at the pictures.
“I like the lamps in Prague, they remind me of the lamps Agnetha is putting in,” Aaron said.
Lily craned her head forward trying to see.
Aaron turned the phone around.
“Oh, the one in Prague is very clean. Both have the exposed lighting. But the walls in Prague remind me more of the walls in the restaurant, like they’re clean despite not having the French Paneling.”
“An ice cream parlor and wine bar doesn’t really need French Paneling.” The decorator sniffed. “And the humidity would ruin it.”
“Could we make chairs out of old barrels?” Lily asked.
“Why do you even need me?” The Decorator asked.
“Because you can tell us if our ideas are good or bad,” Lily smirked at him.
The decorator sighed. “That is the sort of old world kitsch that it probably does need. We can use the same type of lamps or similar as to the restaurant and the rest of the winery.”
“We have hanging flower baskets already and urns of flowers,” Lily pointed out.
The decorator looked at the pictures again. “I know this building looks two and a half stories high with the pitch of the roof. All the lighting will have to be brought in it looks like. Let’s give the walls a good polishing. I know a contractor. We’ll install a marble floor with several coats of protection. Everything will have to be hand built. Maybe we can use barrel staves on the front of the bar.”
“We may not be able to use ivy or roses, aren’t those sunny plants. Agnetha talks and talks,” Lily bit her lip. She set her spoon down, ice cream done. “I can’t remember all of it.”
“I was thinking that we could take a nod from Prague and do the logo in lights, whatever it ends up being.”
“We’ll get a marketing team on it,” Aaron said. “I know Anastasia has one for the restaurant. I’ll tack my requests onto hers.”
“Excellent plan,” the decorator smirked. “I’ll get some drawings for these barrel chairs and use the same roman style idea we’ve been using and that should take care of the ‘wine cellar’ vibe we’re going for.”
Lily nodded rapidly.
Aaron looked faint with relief. He sipped his coffee.
“And use Agnetha’s artist for lights,” the decorator sighed. “She has to be charging through the nose to get it done as quickly as she is.”
“Would you say no to Agnetha or Baroness Silverglade?” Lily said.
Aaron smiled again behind his mug.
“No, not at all,” the decorator admitted. “Hmm, doesn’t she have that arch thing near the Riding Arena.”
“Yep,” Lily said. She produced a picture.
“Yes, exactly, we’ll create something to set off the bar area from the lounging area with that type of theme, though you know, one story instead of whatever that is,” he rolled his eyes. “I know, because I’ve been to France, that the top of that arch has square tile motifs. We can use grapes there, probably in a circle with roses in the corners. Then horses on each side of the arch on the walls.”
Lily nodded rapidly.
“That way we won’t have to change the base of the lamps that she already has a mold for and we won’t get bitched at.”
Lily giggled.
“And we can wrap them in something that likes to climb and is shade loving to help bring in more greenery. There, I think I have a plan. Hanging globe lights from the ceiling with more hanging plants. Put shade loving plants in the urns.” The decorator clapped their hands together. They finished their ice cream. “I’ll go get on making a picture for you to approve.” He stood up. “Excellent meeting you again, Ms. Lily. I’ll be in touch, Sir Silverglade.” He smiled and sauntered off shoes clicking on the tiles.
Lily stared at Aaron.
Aaron sipped his coffee. “He seems very good at his job.”
Lily bit her lip.
“Thank you, for, for all this, you do know just what to say.”
“Sir Aaron, we want this to succeed just as much as you do and, well, ice cream.” Lily widened her eyes. “Now, don’t forget to put up a JarlList to get some employees.”
“Of course, and I am going to call Anastasia and tell her I liked that outfit Franzeska came up with that had the blouse with the contrasting collar and cuffs. It was very professional looking.”
“Yeah, I’ll leave you to it,” Lily breathed. She got up. She wanted no part of the fight over what place was going to have what outfit. She retreated across the street and grabbed the trolley as it headed by to take her to the bus station.
At least, the crisis seemed to be averted.
Lily debated on the way back to Fort Pinta if she should pop her head in and tell Baroness Silverglade to remind her children she loved them a bit more often.
Lily shuddered.
No, probably not a good idea.
FOR THE ACCOMPANYING IMAGES PLEASE DO NOT REMOVE MY WATERMARK AND CONTACT INFORMATION. THANK YOU. I get it. Some of you might get excited and want to see this stuff in the game, especially the clothes, tack, and pets. However, the only way I want to see this in the game is if I get paid for it. If I see it in the game and I’m not paid for it, there will be hell to pay. You think I’m salty. I’d be angry. Personally, I’m not going to send this info to SSO. If you do, leave my contact information there! Don’t give them any excuses to steal.
Now, I’ll know you haven’t read this note if you leave me comments about how ‘salty’ I am about the game and if I hate it so much I should do something else. I am doing something else. It’s called Mystic Riders MMORPG Project. Mystic Riders however is a very baby phase game. You can check out our plans on the game dev blog. (Skills, Factions, Professions, Crafting, Mini-Games, 25+ horse breeds!) If you know anyone who would be interested and has money or contacts about game making, direct them to the blog.

Craft Fair Necessities
All Fairs
Tables- Lightweight but sturdy.  Plastic folding tables are the easiest for transport while still being durable, and come in a number of different sizes.  Adjustable height is recommended, or you can get furniture lift things, to raise them up for easier viewing of product. Quite a few indoor shows will provide tables and chairs, so make sure you know if they are beforehand. No need to carry the extra weight or take up extra space. And tray/TV tables!  You don’t want to be eating over just your lap, or the tables you are using for display.  They are also great for just setting things and organizing what you are setting up.
Tablecloths- Fabric is best for this, as it’s easy to care for and will last a long time.  Going with a matte fabric, like a sturdy woven cotton or polyester, will let the shine of glazed pieces catch the eye, as will having it be black or another dark color.  Polyester will not fade in sunlight as easily, but cotton is easy to just dye dark again. They will also cover the state the table itself is in, especially if it’s used or rented- those tend to be a bit beaten up.
Displays- Things to put your pieces in easy line of sight, and to make the ones that are more detailed or higher priced set ‘above’ the others, either figuratively or literally.  It’s as easy as boxes or blocks of wood with fabric wrapped around them, or you can go with professional ones that are available online.  These shouldn’t be eye-catching on their own- you want them to make your things look good.
Chairs- Folding is easy to get a hold of, and great for transport.  There are also some pretty comfortable ones out there, they’ve come a long way from vinyl slats on an aluminum frame.  Fabric or plastic will work great, depending on how you are comfortable sitting.  Seat cushions are also a nice addition to this.  You have to stay comfortable!
Food/Drink- A cooler of whatever size you need, and ice or cooler packs for cold things.  Water and some sort of sports drink is an absolute must, because the number one cause of headaches and irritability is dehydration.  Even if you don’t feel particularly thirsty, you have to drink.  Especially in hot or sunny weather.  As for food, things that are high-energy and easy or quick to eat, especially if you are running your booth alone.  Fairs don’t close for lunch, and you need to be able to pause your eating to talk to a customer. Coffee or other caffeine sources are fine, especially if you are used to drinking that, but it’s not a substitute for water.
Napkins/Paper Towel- You never know when you need to clean up a spill, and you would be surprised at how many events forget the little things like this.  Wet wipes, like for babies, is also a good idea, as they can clean sticky things like soda off of nearly every surface, including you.  These even have sensitive skin varieties, which are a bonus for obvious reasons.
Your Crafts!  In the rush or activity of packing, it can be easy to forget a small box of something you meant to sell.  Put these boxes in prominent areas when you are planning what to take, and double or even triple check that you have everything.  Also, some places might want or offer for you to be able to craft things on-site.  If you have a way to do so, I highly recommend it.  Seeing someone making something brings a lot of attention, and if you offer custom-made items, you have a higher chance of actually selling more!
A Helper!  Having a second person is very important.  Bathroom breaks, fetching food or something from a car, and helping talk to people who are interested when things get hectic.  In all honesty, a group of at least three, but no more than five, running a booth is the best idea, as there can always be two actually there at all times.
Cash Container- A lock-box or money pouch works.  You need some cash to start the day with, as well.  Most people are just going to be carrying larger bills, like $20s, at the beginning, so you need to be able to break that for change.  Keeping you prices as even intervals helps a lot with this, going by fives means you don’t need singles.  Start out with more than fifty, if at all possible, although smaller events you can probably get away with thirty.  And break that up into smaller bills, fives and tens are the best, and do a mix of them.
Inventory Book and Price Tags- Keep track of your sales!  If you have a small enough stock, or lots of very individual/unique pieces, take the time in the days before to catalog and price everything.  This also helps if you have to leave the table and your helpers need to find a price, like if something lost its tag.  For the tags themselves, the best kind depends on what you sell.  There are tags with little strings on them, and there are stickers.  Stickers often come in different colors, so if you do go with a price system that’s in even increments, you can just make a handy little note card or other notice with the color and price on that.  The stringed ones will need prices written on all of them.  And don’t forget to bring a pen!  Multiple, actually- they like to disappear.
Credit Card Reader-  A lot of people run out of cash, or don’t even bring any.  If you are getting seriously invested, this is a major point to work with.  Square accepts all major cards, and has a handy inventory keeper in it.  It just needs to be linked to a device like a smartphone or tablet, and access to the web- a data hotspot is easy to get a hold of for this.
Containers- You need things to carry all this stuff in.  Plastic bins of varying sizes are great, and will be able to keep everything pretty well protected.  They are also easy to carry, stack, and store.
First Aid- All fairs will have a place to get medical help, but having adhesive bandages and ointments at your table will prevent having to track down someone to get a minor cut taken care of. Also bring allergy meds, pain medications, anti-inflammatories, and tissues. Think you don’t need pain meds? Think again- your feet will hurt after every show, sometimes more of you, too.
Outdoor Events
Tent/Pavilion- Cover is one of the most important things, or you will be burnt to a crisp on sunny days and soaked to the bone on rainy.  If you are doing outdoor shows often, invest in one of the better ones, and treat it with a coat of spray Flex-seal (or something like it) on both sides of the fabric.  It will help waterproof it and make it last longer.  If you get tiny holes in it, as will eventually happen, you can just spray that area again, at least before it’s a big hole.
Pavilion Sides- Rain has a tendency to drift in any amount of wind, and it will get inside your shelter.  Again, spraying these with sealant will make them last longer and work better.  There is a downside- on extremely windy days, they may try to turn the pavilion into a kite.  To help reduce this, cut slits in the lower half of the walls, running vertically.  This cuts down on the resistance it gives the wind, without allowing too much of the possible rain in.  BONUS- they help block out early morning or late evening light!
Extra Tent Stakes and Paracord- Use these to tie down anything and everything you might need to!  It is literally invaluable to crafters with outdoor events.  Buy lots of both, and look up different knots.  Practice these, too, you never know when a speedy tie-down will be needed.
Buckets with Sand/Gravel/Rocks/Cement- Pavement doesn’t allow for tent stakes.  Five gallon buckets are easy to fill and carry, as they usually have handles.  Those make it easy to tie lines to as well.  If going with cement, you will want to get heavy duty eye screws.  While the cement is still soft, screw them into the center of the surface, up to the eye itself, leaving room for acord or rope.  When it is set, these will be heavy, but some of the best weights for the case.
Blankets- A sudden chill is terrible.  There are good outdoor/lawn blankets for sale out there.  They can also be put down on the ground if it gets really soggy for any reason.  Muddy ground in front of your booth is a huge deterrent for most people.  Rugs would work well for this too, as long as you have access to some way to clean them.
Extra clothing! Dress for the weather, and expect the unexpected.  If it’s supposed to be warm, have lightweight clothing, but still keep a jacket or something for any sudden drop in temp.  If the weather is cold, bring more than you think you’ll need.  Craft fairs are a lot of being in one place, and it’s much easier to feel cold faster.
Extra Info
Contact- Keep in touch with whoever is running the event.  This makes it easy to know when dates are changed, if certain things are provided, and if you will need extras of your own.  You can also offer ideas, find out where in the place you might be, and in general be helpful.  Try not to overwhelm them with questions or advice, though, as these people will be working nonstop in the weeks or days before it takes place.  If they are not answering something important, though, keep at it until they do.
Power Options- Some places will have electricity available.  Some of these will charge extra for it.  Know when the event is starting and ending, and if outdoors, how much light will be available in the general area.  If after dark, bring some form of light.  Battery powered lamps are readily available at camping stores.  Buy several, as one might not be enough to shed light on both your tables and behind them. If you can, try to find ones with a warmer tone, as white LEDs can wash out colors.
Wagon/Dolly- Because you now have all this stuff to move around, you need an easy way to do it.  Collapsible wagons are some of the best things out there, and come with heavy duty wheels, to go over rough terrain.  Or, you know, slave labor friends work too.
Something Else To Do- Sometimes, fairs are just slow. Talking with people is the easiest way to pass time, but having another small something can help a lot. Just make sure it is not too engrossing, as you need to be aware of your booth still.
A Sign!  Something to draw the eye is important, especially if what you are selling is small.  It also gives you a Name, which is invaluable if you want return customers.
~~~
Feel free to add to this post anything I missed.  A lot of this is from my own personal experience running booths with my friends and partners, and it is by no means a complete list of things.  And, please, please, reblog this!  I met far too many fellow crafters who came woefully unprepared.  I want to see people go into this kind of thing knowing what they need, not just having some vague idea that they want to sell things.
Surviving the Con: Food
Alternatively Titled: How Not To Starve To Death Because You’re Having So Much Fun You Forget To Eat For Three Days
Listen, I get it. Time moves differently at a con. It’s easy to forget about lunch and other mundane mainstays of a daily routine when there are panels to be attended, autographs to stand in line for, and cosplays to be paraded around and photographed. So as a reminder as much for myself as anyone else, and with Katsucon approaching faster than the falling blade of a guillotine (but, like, in a good way), I thought it appropriate to spend a few minutes neglecting my heap of incomplete costumes and break down the complicated relationship between cons and food. And how to weather it.
The Lay of The Land
Food options on site at a con will range from fantastic to pathetic, depending mostly on the venue and a little on the location. Sometimes you get lucky and there’s a full-on food court with lots of inexpensive options for food that’s not even terrible. Sometimes, your only option is one of those portable stands with a warmer box full of pizza that's about as fresh as you feel around 4pm on Sunday. And it costs $15. Lookin’ at you, Otakon. No bueno.
A lot of cons will have a concession stand running in the vendor hall/artist alley area. The food quality will vary from meh to downright depressing, and the prices are pretty uniformly unfortunate. Often, there’s a restaurant inside or attached to the venue. These usually have pretty good food, but you’re paying through the nose for it. Katsucon in particular comes to mind, with its swanky indoor atrium and the sports bar contained therein. There might also be restaurants within a block or two of the con. That’s about as far as I’m willing to travel in cosplay before my anxiety starts to literally cause me to shrink. If you’re less inhibited you can venture further. The point is, get the lay of the land early. Scope out your options before it’s 4pm on Friday and you’re gnawing on the corner of that fan art print you just bought because you haven’t eaten all day. Know where your best option is for real food. Know where your second best option is.
Breakfast (And Optionally, Coffee)
The most important meal of the day. My friends, do not just drink coffee. You will have a bad time. Put something in your stomach at the start of your day. I don’t think I’ve ever been to a con that didn’t have a conveniently located Starbucks, but if you don’t want to spend money on breakfast, plan ahead! Grab a couple of granola bars or bananas to bring to the con. You can keep yogurt in your hotel room mini fridge, if you’re a yogurt person. Bagels don’t have to be toasted to be edible. Neither do pop tarts (I know, not a whole lot of nutritional value but we’re talking survival here).
Snacks
The list of reasons why it’s a good idea to have pockets or pouches of some nature on your cosplay extends far beyond “snacks,” but “snacks” is probably near the top. Clif bars fit excellently inside a cell-phone-sized pocket or pouch. You guys, the chocolate brownie flavored ones don’t even taste healthy. It’s great. Keeping fruits and veggies in the room that you don’t need to cook is a great idea for when you collapse in the middle of the day to make repairs, change your cosplay, or otherwise rest and recover. Things like grapes, carrots, cherry tomatoes, berries, etc! If that sounds too healthy for you, use the in-room coffee maker without the little coffee pouch to get hot water for your cup noodles. But be careful children, that’s a lot of sodium. I’m sorry.
Water
Some cons will try to place water coolers at convenient locations around the venue, but don’t rely on this. Even if they’re around, they might be empty. (A lot of them have them in panel rooms more often than in the hallway, so if you’re wandering the con dying of thirst, try ducking into a room, often there’s a water cooler or pitcher near the back.) Carrying water around isn’t always convenient or possible, so don’t pass up an opportunity to hydrate if it presents itself. When you’re snacking or eating lunch or dinner remember to drink something!
Listen to your body. It may be trying to tell you that you need food, even if you don’t feel explicitly hungry. I’m exactly the sort of person who only thinks about the last time she ate when she’s lightheaded and wondering why she suddenly feels so crabby when really, she’s having a great time. I’ll start to get really lethargic and kind of sad, but I rarely feel my stomach grumbling or any of the usual signs of hunger. I don’t know why, but at least I know now what it means and how to fix it. The key to all of this is planning ahead. If you wait until you’re starving to figure out your food options, you’re more likely to fork over $20 for the first basket of fries you see, or even worse, you may decide not to eat because all the options are too expensive. Please eat. Don’t die. You can do it.
A Walk in the Park
A short while back, my classmate and I took a trip to see the Tipu Sultan’s summer palace and Cubbon Park, both located roughly in the center of Bangalore. Cubbon Park – known as the ‘lung’ of the city – is an oasis of green replete with winding trails, bamboo thickets, playground space, grassy expanses, and trees tall and dense enough to temporarily muffle the sounds of the surrounding city 1. Unfortunately, getting to the park entailed navigating traffic-congested highways and roads for extended stretches, cutting through a densely-packed commercial district, and being subjected to a constant bombardment of both air and noise pollution 2. Experiencing the tranquility of a quiet stroll through the park was an occasion for me to think about the costs of development, the importance of green space/vegetation for public health, and to draw parallels to my own concrete metropolis of NYC.
Tumblr media
One of Bangalore’s nicknames is the “Garden City” due to its reputation for having an abundance of greenery and tree cover. Several Bangaloreans I’ve spoken to, however, have remarked that this term is now a gross misnomer, as hyper-rapid development and land use changes over the past few decades have drastically reduced the amount of vegetation and public green space in the city. Our local neighborhood of Koramangala is fortunate to have relatively bountiful tree cover, but it isn’t too hard to imagine that much of it has been sacrificed to accommodate a ballooning population and growing economy.
Tumblr media
Article 39 of the Indian Constitution directs the State to “ensure that...the material resources of the community are so distributed as to best subserve the common good” 3. Surely, parks and public green space ought to be included in the inventory of material resources that subserve this public good. One could argue, however, that economic growth and development are also good for Bangalore. How to strike an appropriate balance?
Tumblr media
Eminent domain laws in India allow the State to expropriate private land (much of it formerly agrarian) for ‘public purpose.’ Some scholars 4 complain, however, that loopholes in the law have enabled the State to sell off this land to private commercial interests for the purposes of development. (I imagine that these types of sales have helped catalyze the IT industry/tech boom in Bangalore) 5. The end result: land that was intended to serve as a public resource – a commons for the people – is transformed into a commodity for the profit of private industry. Some may benefit enormously from these land use changes (India’s educated IT professionals, for instance). Others, not so much 6.
To get a sense of what has been lost, I dug up this map from a study conducted by the Indian Institute of Science 7, showing the drastic changes in Bangalore’s land-use over time:
Tumblr media
Other public resources that rightly belong to the commons but have been sacrificed in the era of rapid urban development are clean water (which I discussed in a previous post on the so-called ‘water mafia’ and which is quantified in the graph 7 below) and clean air.
Tumblr media
As reservoirs have been drained to accommodate developmental build-up, clean water – like green space – has become commodified and sold at markup to those who can afford it. Below is an example of a private tanker truck supplying water to a restaurant near St. Johns, which I suspect is being done without any oversight from a central authority.
Tumblr media
But what about clean air? That is every person’s birthright and can’t possibly be expropriated and commodified, right? Well peep this Fortune article from 2016, which I originally thought was an Onion article: Smog in China and India Have Given Birth to a New Industry: Bottled Air.
“In May, a Canadian company that claims to sell “100% Pure Rocky Mountain Air” announced that it would start distributing its product in twin packs of 3 and 8-liter bottles to the Indian market, for around $20 and $40 respectively.”
Writer and cultural critic Matthew Crawford has argued that even our very sense of mental peace and calm – relatively abundant, coincidentally, in places like parks – are things that we increasingly have to pay for. He uses the example of airports: the wealthy pay for the privilege of enjoying the quietude and privacy of the business-class lounge, while the rest of us are forced to contend with the noise and the constant stimulation of the airport proper 8. Another example: in the hospital, if you want the privacy and quiet of your own room, it will come at a steep price – a situation that has many parallels to ‘VIP suites’ in American hospitals.
One of the attendings I met during my first week in Bangalore described the city colorfully as a ‘sensory assault.’ Public parks like Cubbon are great because they are reservoirs of peace and tranquility – respites from the daily sensory onslaught that everyone ought to be able to enjoy (for free!). Whilst walking through Cubbon, I was reminded of how lucky I was to grow up across the street from a park and playground in NYC and how fortunate I’ll be to be steps away from Central Park during my residency. I was so glad to learn, via Wikipedia, that “the roads around [Cubbon Park] are closed for traffic from 5:00 to 8:00 am every day to provide more safety and fresh environment for morning walkers and exercisers” 9. Finally, a victory for Bangalore’s pedestrians (who I feel are generally shafted in favor of drivers/cars...)!
One last note about the environmental consequences of destroying urban green space – it tends to make a city hotter. Check out the below map 10 of NYC, showing a pretty direct correlation between areas of denser vegetation and lower average temperatures. Some life-long Bangaloreans I’ve chatted with have noted wistfully that when they were kids, the temperatures in the city were significantly cooler, to the point where they would need to put on a sweater in the morning to stave off the a.m. chill. Those days, it seems, are long gone.
Tumblr media
To place things in perspective, here is a comparison of green space/vegetation in Bangalore vs. NYC:
Tumblr media
Speculating on why preservation of public resources/the commons has been under-prioritized as a political issue, Dr. Koshy noted – quite provocatively, I thought – that “Indians… do not understand the nature of societal or social responsibility which is not just taking care of yourself and your family…We have to put the cart before the horse. This means enough water, food, shelter, clothing, education, jobs, power, transport, etc., for everyone, not just for some” 4 11. I thought his assessment of the Indian public was perhaps a bit harsh, and didn’t adequately account for the sometimes difficult tradeoffs between acquiring things like ‘jobs’ and ‘power’ (often attained via economic growth) and securing resources like water (often achieved via responsible environmental stewardship and conservation). His sentiment did, however, seem to be consistent with the overall spirit of Article 39, which defends a sense of collective responsibility and collective destiny in India.
[1] St. John’s is a similar oasis, as I’ve mentioned previously. ↩︎
[2] This of course exists in NYC too, to a lesser degree. ↩︎
Helpful Tips for Picking the Right Air Cooler on Rent
Summers can be unbearable! Excessive heat can have a severe effect on our mind and body. Following a tedious day after work, you generally want to unwind at your home. However, this heat won’t let you do so. Thus, there is a need for something to relax and be comfortable at home, thus escaping this extreme heat!
You might think of installing an A.C, however, its price and installation cost is relatively high. The power consumption of an air conditioner is a lot high too. You would also need to service it at regular intervals, keeping track of which might be quite challenging at times. Therefore, you’d need something that’s relatively easier to handle.
This is where the usefulness of air coolers comes into the picture. They are less expensive compared to A.C’s and don’t consume a lot of electricity either. If you have a limited budget but want to get some respite from the harsh heat, an air cooler is a convenient and possibly your best option. An air cooler's mechanism is based on evaporative cooling, i.e, to draw-in hot air from outside, condensing it, and releasing the cold air.
Therefore the following are a few tips to choose the best air coolers on rent:
Choose one depending upon the weather:
Whenever you want to pick a cooler on rent, think about the climate. You must have an idea as to how much humidity your area has. There are primarily two types of air coolers accessible:
Personal or Portable air cooler is made for your personal use. They are very portable, which makes them easy to carry. Besides, it provides cooling for longer and consumes less power. Moreover, it doesn’t make much noise either.
Desert Cooler is meant to be used in larger rooms, terraces, halls, etc. This one is ideal to use when there is less humidity in the air. Though they provide cooling for long hours, they consume a lot of power and are not portable.
Cooling Pads:
The pads are vital for the cooling effect. The pads’ thickness determines the amount of cooling. To offer substantial cooling, the thickness should be 90mmm minimum. Such pads are either made of aspen or cellulose. The ones made with cellulose last longer compared to aspen (a synthetic material). Though the aspen pads have lesser longevity than the cellulose ones and need regular maintenance, it's less costly than cellulose pads.
Speed Control:
The guideline of the speed of airflow is essential for your health. Therefore, you need to pick an outdoor cooler for rent consisting of a speed regulator; they are fundamentally alluded to as a variable speed air cooler.
Water Level Control:
Maintaining an appropriate water lever inside the cooler is vital. Otherwise, the water may leak and come out, thereby messing things up. Ideally, you don’t want any wreck while you intend to unwind! So it is imperative to have a programmed/automatic water regulator set in your cooler, so the water level is adjusted automatically, and you can relax peacefully!
Water Tank capacity:
This is a very significant feature. It is mostly decided by your room size and the cooler type, whether personal or desert cooler. The range of water tank ranges from 20 to 50 liters.
The Inverters:
An ideal air cooler is one that works while connected to an inverter. It consumes less power, and keeping in mind that usually there will be power-cuts during summer, it is the ideal alternative to have as it ensures you won’t be suffering in the heat.
Conclusion:
Thus, consider these fundamental features referenced to search for the best air coolers available online.
