(Planning the Day) To Meet You
Wangxian, Modern AU, Slow Burn, E-Rated

Chapter 5
Once they reach his apartment, Lan Wangji realises that he cannot take off his shoes while carrying a sleeping child. For a split second, he sees the appeal of flip flops.
He hands Wei Wuxian A-Yuan and takes off his not-quite-white-anymore shoes. He gets a pair of guest slippers and puts them in front of Wei Wuxian. He wonders when the last time was that he needed them. He can’t remember.
“Lan Zhan, wait. A-Yuan and I are just full of sand and your flat looks so… clean. Maybe we should just-”
“Wait here.”
Lan Wangji goes into the bathroom to fetch a wet towel, then comes back and ignores Wei Wuxian’s outstretched hand. He gently wipes A-Yuan’s dusty legs and feet, careful not to wake him. When he’s satisfied with the result, he almost, almost bends down to clean Wei Ying’s legs, too. Lan Wangji, what are you doing?
Instead, he exchanges the towel with Wei Wuxian for A-Yuan. Is it normal for children that they can sleep through anything? Remarkable.
“Do you have a couch? Or a thick blanket we can spread out on the carpet? Or maybe-”
Lan Wangji doesn’t bother answering and simply carries A-Yuan into his bedroom. He will not let a child sleep on the floor, when he has a large and comfortable bed. He softly lays A-Yuan down and then adjusts his pillow and the blanket until it looks sufficiently comfortable. While he’s closing the curtains, Wei Wuxian enters the room, radiating nervous energy.
“Lan Zhan, the couch is just fine, really. A-Yuan can sleep anywhere! He fell asleep with his head on his plate last week! Look, your sheets are so bright and clean, you really don’t have to-”
“Quiet. A-Yuan is sleeping.”
Lan Wangji leaves his bedroom and is pleased to hear that Wei Wuxian follows him into the living room.
Lan Wangji comes to a halt in the middle of his carpet, in front of his coffee table. He turns around and Wei Wuxian is right in front of him. Only two feet away. Wei Ying is in his apartment. What… what is he supposed to do now?
For the time being, he crosses his hands behind his back and straightens up to appear nonchalant and as though he isn’t wholly out of his depth here.
Wei Wuxian looks around his apartment, turning around in place and Lan Wangji is suddenly happy about the fact that he’s dealt with his confusing emotions by cleaning rigorously. Not that it is ever really messy, per se.
Wei Wuxian finishes his turn and smiles at Lan Wangji.
“Aah, Lan Zhan, so this is your place. It looks just like you! If somebody had asked me to draw a picture of your flat, it would have looked like this! So tidy, so elegant. Just like Lan Zahn!”
“... Mn.” His ears grow hot again, just a little.
“Do you live alone here?”
“Mn.”
“Ah, I see. You must have a lot of money then, living in a place like this while you’re a student. Good for you!”
Lan Wangji thinks this might not be the best time to explain that his brother and he inherited a lot of money when their father died and that his uncle owns this apartment complex. He simply nods. He does have a lot of money, he supposes.
Wei Wuxian seems to be unsure how to continue the conversation and Lan Wangji has never been good at keeping a conversation from dying. Before the sudden silence between them can grow and become awkward, Wei Wuxian’s face lights up.
“Lan Zhan, are those… bunnies?”
Wei Ying seems to have spotted the shelf dedicated to pictures of Cloud and Jade and happily bounces over to get a better look. Lan Wangji very much hopes that he can introduce them to Wei Ying one day. That would be… lovely. He walks over to stand next to Wei Ying, because he always likes looking at these pictures. He also likes standing next to Wei Ying.
“Lan Zhan, are those your bunnies?”
“Mn.”
Wei Ying turns his head, obviously looking for a place the bunnies could be hidden.
“They live with my brother.”
“Oooh, you have a brother? I’m learning so much about you today!”
Lan Wangji helpfully points at a frame with Lan Xichen’s picture.
“Whaaaat? Unbelievable, how is your brother so handsome as well? What did they feed you growing up? Not that I’m complaining, haha, it is an honour and a pleasure to look at your beautiful face every day. I mean… ahaha, so, uhm, your brother takes care of the bunnies, eh? You must miss them a lot!”
“Mm.”
“Just look at them, they’re so adorable!”
“Cloud.” Lan Wangji points at her. “Jade.” He points at a picture of Jade.
“Oh nooo, those names are so cute! Lan Zhan, don’t tell me, did you choose those names?”
“Yes.”
“That’s too much! No, you’re too precious!” Wei Ying puts his hand on Lan Wangji’s arm while he pretends to swoon. Ah. “Lan Zhan, please tell me you have a picture with you and the bunnies. Please, I need to see it!”
Wei Wuxian is tugging on his sleeve now, his fingers brushing against Lan Wangji’s upper arm with every tug. It’s not like Lan Wangji has a choice. He gets out his smartphone, scrolls through his picture gallery, trying to ignore how Wei Ying shamelessly looks at his screen, and finally finds a picture that he thinks is adequate. His brother took it a few months ago. Cloud is sitting in his lap and he cradles Jade in his arms. He’s not looking at the camera, but looking at Jade. He’s smiling.
He turns the phone so Wei Wuxian can get a better look. He’s expecting the excited chatter to start again, with plenty of “cute” and “Lan Zhan!” thrown in, but Wei Ying stays silent. Is it... not a good picture? It is the best he has. When he glances at Wei Ying, he’s frozen in place and staring at the picture almost as if in a… daze.
“Wei Ying?”
Wei Ying blinks and shakes his head as if to clear his mind and then looks straight into his eyes. His expression is unusually serious, almost intense.
“Lan Zhan… would you send me this picture?”
“... huh?”
Wei Ying keeps holding his gaze with the same intensity and Lan Wangji has to remind himself to breathe. He’s scared to move or say anything, because he doesn’t want Wei Ying to stop looking at him. It makes him feel… many, many things. Too soon, it comes to an end. Wei Ying suddenly laughs sheepishly and a flush spreads across his cheeks.
“Ahahaha, I’m sorry! That was a weird thing to ask, wasn’t it? I just… uhm, it’s a nice picture! Very… cute. With the… smile. Yes. But you don’t want to exchange numbers, I know! Forget I-”
“Yes.”
“Eh?”
“I will send it to you. I wanted Wei Ying’s number anyway.”
“You did???”
“Mn.”
He offers Wei Ying his phone, so he can put in the number and then he calls him, so Wei Ying has his number. It is done very easily and quickly and Lan Wangji wonders why it had given him so much anxiety. Then he excuses himself to the kitchen. That was… a lot and he could use some time to process what happened.
The way that Wei Wuxian looked at him… He’s not sure what the look meant, but he’d like to see it again.
Before any further processing can happen, Wei Wuxian joins him in the kitchen.
“Lan Zhan, look at this! Oh man, do you never cook? Why is it so clean? Or do you only ever eat raw veggies every day?”
“I cook.”
“Of course, I know, I know. Of course Lan Zhan cooks and does the dishes every day. Ah, so tidy and- No way! You have one of these?”
Wei Ying bounces over to his brand new, very expensive coffee maker.
“Jiejie has one of these, because her husband is fucking loaded… ah sorry, I shouldn’t use such foul language in your presence!”
“Don’t mind.”
“What, no rule like ‘No cursing next to the coffee maker’?”
“Of course not.” Lan Wangji points at the electric kettle. “Don’t curse in front of the kettle. It gets upset.”
Wei Wuxian looks delighted.
“Lan Zhan, did you just make a joke? You’re secretly very funny, aren’t you?”
He doesn’t think anyone has ever called him funny before. Not quite knowing how to react, he turns towards the coffee maker and presses ‘Start’.
“Wei Ying, coffee?”
“Yes, please! Oh, Lan Zhan, can you also steam milk and do you also have those syrups? Vanilla and caramel and stuff like that? Jiejie always makes some ridiculously fancy latte creations that are literally to die for!”
Syrups? The internet didn’t tell him that he needed syrups for coffee!
“No.”
Lan Wangji makes a mental note to buy some coffee syrups as soon as possible.
“Is… vanilla your favourite?”
“Syrup?”
“Mn.”
“Ah, I’m not picky! As long as you don’t make it too sweet like Jin Zixuan… He made us coffee once and I almost died! I think he tried to poison me and Jiang Cheng with sugar. He really holds a grudge, just because I hit him that one time! And it doesn’t even count! Jiang Cheng was the one who wanted to punch him and I tried to get in between them and sort of accidentally hit Jin Zixuan with my elbow and there really was only a little bit of blood and nothing was broken and my sister ended up taking care of him so I really don’t know what he was complaining about! He should be thanking us every day, if you ask me!”
Lan Wangji is not sure what he’s supposed to say to… all of that. So he just nods and makes a vague agreeing sound and busies himself with making coffee for Wei Wuxian. Black, because he does not know how to steam milk with this thing and because he has no syrups. Yet.
“Hahaha, oh sorry, you don’t want to hear about my family drama.”
“I do.”
He may have trouble keeping up with all the details, but he does want to hear everything Wei Ying feels comfortable sharing with him.
Wei Ying cocks his head, considering, and opens his mouth, but then closes it again, before any words can escape.
“Wei Ying... “
“Lan Zhan.”
“Maybe it is not my place to ask… but if you want to talk about… your brother… I will listen.”
“I never told you about my situation, did I?” Wei Wuxian still seems to be considering and Lan Wangji hands him his coffee and then goes to make tea for himself, so Wei Ying can think a bit more.
“Mn. You don’t have to.”
“Oh, well, no reason why you shouldn’t know. You already met A-Yuan anyway!”
They take their beverages to the living room and settle down on the couch, next to each other. Wei Wuxian fidgets and squirms and Lan Wangji would like to hold his hand or reassure him otherwise, but he doesn’t want to accidentally spook him even more. So he pretends that he doesn’t notice and waits until Wei Wuxian is ready to talk.
“Alright, so, Jiang Yanli and Jiang Cheng are my adoptive siblings and their parents, well, their dad, adopted me after my parents died but sadly they died too a few years ago, a lot of death in this story so far, ahaha, uhm, not important... “
Lan Wangji doesn’t say anything, but he does move his leg a little to the right, so their knees are touching.
“Aaaaaaanyway, so, Yanli got married to this rich guy and moved out and Jiang Cheng and I were going to live together in a swanky apartment next to uni but then I moved in with Wen Qing and Wen Ning to help them take care of A-Yuan, whose parents also died, wow so many dead parents, because Wen Qing is doing her internship at the hospital and Wen Ning was really sick at the time, some kind of mysterious auto-immune thing, he’s much better now, mostly… uuh, so I took a break from uni last year and moved in with them, Jiang Cheng couldn’t understand my decision, he hates me now and doesn’t want to see me, the end.”
Lan Wangji empties his teacup and then puts it down on the coffee table. He turns to look at Wei Ying, whose fingers are playing with the pillow he had pulled into his lap, whose shoulders are tense and whose eyes are pointed at the ground... as though he’s expecting Lan Wangji to… scold him? Judge him? That’s not possible. Wei Wuxian put his life on hold to help his friends raise A-Yuan. He’s putting up with his fucking stupid brother turning his back on him and despite everything, he is warm and happy and good.
“Wei Ying.”
Lan Wangji puts his hand over Wei Ying’s hand, to still his fingers and because this is important.
“Wei Ying, you’re wonderful.”
Wei Wuxian does look at him then. Wide eyed and slack-jawed.
“Lan Zhan, you-”
“And your brother is an idiot.”
Wei Ying’s eyes widen a bit more and finally smiles again. A small, weak smile maybe, but it is there.
And then… because he thinks it is pretty clear now, but he wants to have it confirmed once and for all:
“Are you married?”
“What?!”
Wei Wuxian’s flummoxed face is answer enough.
“Why would you even think that? Who would I be married to?”
He hadn’t considered that he’d have to explain himself for this line of questioning. How can he explain that?
“I thought maybe… thought A-Yuan was your son and… Wen Ning…”
“You thought what? “
Wei Wuxian sounds so horrified that Lan Wangji is equal parts embarrassed and pleased.
“Lan Zhan, you really thought I was married this entire time? To A-Ning??? You must have thought me completely shameless, flirting with you all the time!”
“... Flirting?”
“... You didn’t even realise???”
Wei Wuxian immediately launches into a long and indignant monologue, but his voice slowly fades out, as Lan Wangji’s brain tries to process what he’s just learned. Wei Ying has been flirting with him. (“How many times have I called you beautiful?”) And Lan Wangji didn’t notice? (“-telling me that my best winks went unnoticed? What a-”) He needs to have a look at everything that happened during these past two weeks and consider every interaction in a new light. (“-do you feed clementines to any random man you meet in the library, Lan Zhan? I can’t believe-”) What else has he missed? Not understanding the full context of their conversations, missing little details of his shared time with Wei Ying… how could that happen, how could he rob himself of that by being too scared and too stubborn to ask? (“-do I have to do, lie down naked across your books, or-”)
Lan Wangji needs some space to think, so he collects their empty mugs and carries them to the kitchen, hoping that this time he’ll at least get a minute or two to process things.
But no such luck. As soon as he has put the mugs into the sink, he hears Wei Ying’s footsteps behind him.
“Lan Zhan.”
Wei Ying’s voice is gentle now, as though he’s approaching a spooked animal. Lan Wangji closes his eyes for a second and takes a deep breath, before turning around. Wei Ying’s smile is as gentle as his voice, but there’s just the slightest edge to it, a hint of nervousness. Lan Wangji did just leave in the middle of a conversation. Maybe… He doesn’t want Wei Wuxian to think that he does not like the idea of flirting. He wants to tell him so, but he doesn’t have himself under control right now. He can only stand there and stare, frozen and exposed.
“Lan Zhan, were you shocked?”
“... Mn.“ Shocked to his very core.
“Now that you know this humble student has been flirting with you, do you want him to stop?”
The way Wei Wuxian says it, it is clearly meant to be taken as a joke, but Lan Wangji thinks he does hear a sincere question underneath the mirth. He’s grateful to Wei Wuxian that he asks this, that Lan Wangji does not need to stumble over unfamiliar words in order to reassure Wei Ying.
“No,” he says with as much conviction as he can muster.
Immediately, Wei Ying relaxes and his smile is pure happiness again. Lan Wangji relaxes too, albeit only an infinitesimal amount. Wei Ying closes the distance between them and leans against the kitchen counter next to Lan Wangji. Lan Wangji manages to turn his body, so he can continue looking at Wei Ying. Wei Wuxian taps his nose, apparently deep in thought.
“Lan Zhan… “ Wei Wuxian’s gaze travels from Lan Wangji’s feet all the way up to his eyes and he swears he can actually feel the path it takes on his skin. “Let me tell you again, because I want it to be absolutely clear: I am not married.”
“Mn.”
“I am not in a relationship with anyone. I am single. Not coupled up. Available. Just waiting for someone to come and sweep me off my feet. Alright?”
“... Mm.”
Wei Wuxian slides even closer and they’re so close to touching, that the little heated space left between them makes Lan Wangji shiver in anticipation.
“What about you?”
“Hm?”
“Are you married?”
“No.”
“Coupled up?”
“No.”
“Available?”
“... Yes.” A single drop of sweat crawls down Lan Wangji’s spine.
“Good!” Wei Wuxian beams at him and then winks. “Then I’ll make sure to flirt so shamelessly that even Lan Wangji can’t help but notice. Alright?”
“... Mn.”
Lan Wangji feels as though by now he must be flushed from head to toe and he sincerely hopes it isn’t so. He does not need his body to broadcast his embarrassing excitement to Wei Wuxian.
Then, just like earlier on the playground, Wei Ying puts his hand on Lan Wangji’s arm. His fingers are cool on Lan Wangji’s heated skin and it is slightly mortifying, because Wei Ying must notice, must realise that Lan Wangji is completely out of his depth here. But he does not move away from Wei Ying’s touch this time, because he thinks it’s safe to feel like this around Wei Ying. He would not mock him, nor would he take away his touch because of this.
And indeed, Wei Ying smiles... no, he laughs, a bright and happy sound and Lan Wangji is helplessly in love. He has no choice but to return the smile.
Wei Ying draws in a sharp breath and lifts his hand from Lan Wangji’s arm, but before he can miss the touch, Wei Ying’s fingertips gently trace over Lan Wangji’s cheekbone. The wonder he feels is reflected on Wei Ying’s face. Wei Ying trails his fingers down to the corner of his mouth, as though he wants to touch his smile.
Lan Wangji wants to… He wants to do so many things, but he doesn’t know what is allowed, what is appropriate. He doesn’t know how to do anything but stand there and let Wei Ying touch him.
“Lan Zhan.”
“Mh?”
“Lan Zhan, Lan Zhan…” Wei Ying tucks a lock of hair behind Lan Wangji’s ear and for a second he leans closer and Lan Wangji thinks, he might… But then Wei Ying shakes his head and smiles and pulls his hand back. “No need to rush, is there? Ah, Lan Zhan, you’re really just so…”
Lan Wangji really wishes Wei Wuxian would finish his sentences, but before he can say that, a muffled wailing comes from his bedroom. Wei Wuxian looks from Lan Wangji's face to where the wailing is coming from and back, sighs wistfully and then smiles, his dimples winking at Lan Wangji.
“Ha, sounds like my little radish woke up! He must be confused, waking up in such a large and cozy bed!”
After a few minutes, Wei Wuxian returns with a sleepy A-Yuan on his arm and says they’ll be leaving and it was such a great time and thank you for inviting them to his apartment and Lan Wangji simply nods to everything and then brings them to the door and helps Wei Wuxian put on A-Yuan’s shoes. Wei Ying waves, and A-Yuan waves, and Lan Wangji waves. And then they’re gone, and Lan Wangji’s thoughts finally have space to unfold themselves.
But first he needs to take a long shower.
Later that day, so late in fact, that Lan Wangji is already in his pyjamas and about to climb into bed, his phone buzzes with a message from Wei Ying. And then it buzzes again. What a wonderful sound. What a wonderful day. What a wonderful Wei Ying.
