so. kiriona huh?

under the cut: full nona spoilers, plus me trying to process some thoughts and coming to very few conclusions

what a kick in the teeth that was, huh?

I want to touch on two main things about gideon's appearance as kiriona in ntn: kiriona's behavior toward the other characters and kiriona as revenant and how I think those things might be related.

so I'm open to both the ideas I've seen floating around wrt to kiriona's behavior in ntn, those being 1) this is an extremely traumatized, sad, and angry but functionally complete gideon nav and 2) that this is only a fragment of gideon's soul.

I think enough people mention "parts" of souls enough times for the fragment theory to have weight, as well as the interview in which tamsyn compares gideon's soul to a happy meal (yeah) and saying that harrow only ever ate the hamburger, whither the fries and drink, etc. maybe what we're seeing is the discarded plastic toy of gideon nav's soul.

however, there are things kiriona says and does that are absolutely 100% gideon. I think what's giving a lot of people pause is kiriona's apparent indifference to seeing her friends and allies again and, most significantly, her indifference over seeing harrow's body. for better or worse, one of gideon's defining characteristics is that she cares a whole fuck of a lot about harrowhark nonagesimus. kiriona acts aloof and unconcerned about all that for a good chunk of her page time in ntn, but particularly near the end we some behavior break through that facade that we would more readily associate with gideon (holding harrow's body and telling her to keep it together when nona starts to come apart; telling alecto to get in line when she offers harrow her service).

so, yknow, I think either option is fair game at this point, but unequivocally this is gideon, at least in part.

so then, this is gideon. and given that, there are some behaviors that I am having trouble reconciling with the gideon we've seen thus far.

I have a hard time believing that gideon would shove an injured and dying cam the way that she does, but hey, she's having a really, really bad day. just what we've seen her experience on page could fill her therapy appointments for the next myriad, and idk what eight months with only john "gaslight" gaius and ianthe "girlboss" tridentarius will do to a mf. I am withholding judgement.

but even moreso than that, I have a hard time reconciling the gideon we see in htn with whatever the hell kiriona's got going on with ianthe. gideon hates ianthe. gideon is furious with ianthe for the way that she treated harrow throughout htn, and yet kiriona and ianthe have friendship bracelets and a secret handshake. and so I'm wondering: how much does kiriona remember about the events of htn?

I'm also interested in why god made gideon into a revenant. he did not have to do that—he's god. presumably he could have fixed her body and put her soul back where it belongs, provided he had access to both those things. and yet kiriona is tied to her own mutilated corpse. is, in her own words, mega-dead. why?

perhaps because john wants total control over this asset, this weapon he's created. john, who "knows where remembrance lives in the brain" and is perfectly willing to exploit that. now, he did that with his lyctors while bringing them completely back to life, but gideon has always been a special case. gideon survived nerve gas as a toddler. gideon made harrow's much-abused skull go SPANG back into shape after a few minutes residence in her meat. maybe if john put gideon's soul back in a living body, gideon's healing factor has the ability to revert whatever alterations he may have made to her brain.

(this is assuming I know how revenants work, which is a big assumption. is whatever kiriona's got going on even being processed through gideon's brain, if that brain is dead? unsure. I am not a spirit magician.)

but regardless, we've had a couple examples of how integral memory is to identity in the locked tomb, the biggest one from this very book being nona-who-is-alecto, but alecto-who-is-not-nona. plus the lyctors with their memory of god's fallibility removed, plus harrow reduced by her half-remembered life.

and then there's what kiriona says to aigalemene, "don't—that's where my heart used to be."

is it possible that kiriona gaia is a gideon with the parts most inconvenient to god cut away?

very brief character thoughts: harrow the ninth

maybe i’ll do an in-depth analysis later, but for now, take these scraggly sentences please and thank you okay here i go:

Harrowhark Nonagesimus - please go 2 therapy. my child i love you and i want you to not flinch away from affection. also i want your gender. also please don’t make soup. also kids don’t give yourself a homemade lobotomy without an expert

Ianthe Tridentarius - devious little raccoon. bitchy but in a good way but in a bad way. she is so pretty and will also claw your eyes out. also sided with john mf gaius in the end, like honey no, decision-making not on point

John Gaius - i’m sorry i still kinda love him even after everything he did. he’s just so nice and also bisexual and he hugs people and says ‘for fuck’s sake’ but also probably genocide, and lying a shit ton?? but he made a dad joke - sorry not my fault i get attached to mentor characters (yes it is but ok.) i just - very mixed feelings bc he is literally enacting colonialism and for what, john, for what, you polite-ass tea-drinking hug-giving lying cool-eyed bastard

Augustine - Very British Man. tall and old and very cool and i like him a lot a lot. really came up with the solution of going down on god just to cause a distraction for an assassination. mad respect sir. another mentor character i am attached to

Mercymorn - didn’t like her at first and now i would die for her. powerful and petty. gaslight, gatekeep, girlboss, go down on god. also she can just touch people and see their whole anatomical layout and shit like,,, mad respect ma’am

Ortus/G1deon - i mean my first impression of him was as harrow’s attempted assassin so. he turned very chill in the end. he is a very good fighter, so mad respect. and pyrrha dve is excellent good sir, maybe just stop having affairs with people so i can actually comprehend the ending of this book

Ortus Nigenad - literally saves the day with poetry. big and sad. iconic, in a sad way. sad. melancholy. contains bursts of snark that truly add spice. also needs to go to therapy. really all the ninth house bitches do

Abigail + Magnus - such excellent mom and dad energy. abigail is iconic and so smart and very much college professor energy. magnus is so nice and is a people pleaser and we love to see it. they are a power couple and also have an amazing bond and i would thanergetically combust for them. they’re harrow’s parents now bye

Camilla + Palamedes - iconic as always. camilla is a stoic queen. sexpal is smart boi. they are the best duo. also kudos to palamedes for straight up attaching his soul to his skull. also kudos to camilla for being the most baddest assest person.

Wake Me Up Inside - did not like her but that was the point. gideon’s edgy mom. gideon’s mother whom gideon definitely inherited swearing like a sailor from (but john does that sometimes too so.) very cool. also dead and in cytherea’s body which was very intriguing.

Gideon Nav - last but not least. the queen. the legend. the meme god. literally a child of god. like. come on. just the most iconic fucking person. hi not fucking dead, i’m dad. please. gideon is just the absolute best there is nothing else to it. there is a lot more to it actually, and she also needs therapy, but she has the humor coping mechanism to work with at least so like. also trapped in harrow’s body which is kinda weird but ok she’s rolling with it

- so yeah alecto the ninth needs to be in my grubby little hands soon so i can spew even more tumblr posts about it. farewell

yeet i'm following the trend and doing the character thing !! under the cut will be all of my character information and their standings on the gangs - it will also be a starter call as well, i'm going to keep them uncapped so go mf wild fam !! this is a plotting call as well, so pls like for me to slide into those dms to plot !! and for starters, please tell me who you'd like the starter for and who you'd like it from !!

amilyn holdo // unaffiliated ( 4 / ?? ) leia, laurie, jane, emma

amilyn has always believed in doing the right thing, so naturally, she became a politician - fighting to end the gang war between both families, but hasn’t been successful yet, but she’s continuing to try.

anakin skywalker // the hargreeves ( 4 / ?? ) leia, rose, matthew, magnus, anakin

anakin’s knowledge of the force made him the perfect person to interrogate others - he can get information from peoples minds, even if they don’t want to reveal it - and from time to time, when the occasion calls for it, he uses his lightsaber for added influence.

annie james // the hargreeves ( 3 / ?? ) hallie, ginny, thor

annie, alongside her sister hallie serve as a distraction for the hargreeves - the devil twins who really live up to their names, though annie is the calmer of the pair, she wouldn’t hesitate to join her sister when she likes to use explosives.

ben solo // unaffiliated ( 5 / ?? ) poe, desireye, leia, ariana, obi wan, anakin

being the son of the president meant that staying neutral would be the best thing for him, which he didn’t mind. though, he’s disappointed that his brother joined one of the gangs and has tried to get him to stop and come back home. ben usually works with his mother in the white house and on occasion spends his evenings with his girlfriend going dancing.

cassian andor // the death eaters ( 5 / ?? ) han, rose, carol, leia, jyn

cassian has done some things in his life he isn’t proud of for the rebellion, but being a smuggler isn’t as hard as he thought it would be - he usually just transports drugs and liquor from one place to the next so that the poilce don’t find them.

dimitry // the hargreeves ( 4 / ?? ) oswald, ginny, elizabeth, anya

dimitry has been a thief all his life and when he joined the hargreeves, that didn’t change. except now he isn’t stealing just to live, he’s stealing big-time things for the hargreeves now - guns, art, wine, you name it, he’s stolen it.

dorcas meadows // the death eaters ( 3 / ?? ) marlene, alecto, remus

dorcas was previously a dancer in one of the many speakeasies owned by the carrows, but after reuniting with her ex-girlfriend, alecto carrow - the two reunited and after the mysterious death of alecto’s husband, dorcas joined the higher ranks as her underboss, but on occasion, she still dances in the cubs.

ewan mckinnon // the hargreeves ( 4 / ?? ) marina, jemma, abi, marlene

ewan isn’t really too fond of the fighting, so he’s keeping out of it - being a bartender in one of the many speakeasies, the only real thing he needs to worry about is people getting too rowdy and having to throw them out. he does some deals on the side as well to earn some extra money.

hera syndulla // the hargreeves ( 5 / ?? ) breha, desireye, leia, ahsoka, jessica

hera has always been a pilot, who likes to go fast on occasion - so becoming a getaway driver was only second nature to her. a few jobs a week set her up for the entire month - whether it’s deliveries or robberies, she’s always there to help get the others away before they’re caught and they haven’t been caught yet.

jessika pava // the death eaters ( 5 / ?? ) han, desireye, breha, alastor, ahsoka

jess has always fought, and fighting here was no different than fighting back home - so she joined the death eaters, not only for protection but to help those who can’t protect themselves. she became a bodyguard for hire and hasn’t lost a client yet.

jeyne poole // the hargreeves ( 4 / ?? ) dany, mya, frank, chuck

jeyne joined the hargreeves for one thing, protection - fighting makes her uncomfortable and brings back horrible memories, so she stays far away from it - working as a waitress in a speakeasy, she tries to stay away from all conflict.

lando calrissian // unaffilated ( 4 / ?? ) leia, veronica, ahsoka, han

lando has always been a sweet talker, doesn’t matter who he interacts with - everyone loves him. almost everyone. that’s why being a politician was the best job for him, the business might be a little corrupt, but he doesn’t mind.

lucy weasley // the hargreeves ( 4 / ?? ) hugo, james sirius, hermione, roxanne

lucy had never really been one for fighting, but causing a distraction is something she’s excellent at. her signature is letting off a highly dense smoke bomb so that it blinds everyone else except for the gang members.

peggy carter // the death eaters ( 5 / ?? ) steve, jemma, mary, tasha, ellie

having been an agent prior to her life in washington, peggy thought it would be best to keep to what she knows best - so she spies on the hargreeves, wearing different disguises each time and passes on any valuable information she happens to hear or finds.

shara bey // the hargreeves ( 2 / ?? ) bb-8, daenerys

shara has always been good with her hands, fixing things comes as second nature to her so becoming a mechanic when she joined the hargreeves was the best option for her - it kept her out of the fight, but still in the loop so she could help if need be.
