2 Timothy 2:8-15
If we have died with Christ then we shall live with Christ
Remember the Good News that I carry, ‘Jesus Christ risen from the dead, sprung from the race of David’; it is on account of this that I have my own hardships to bear, even to being chained like a criminal – but they cannot chain up God’s news. So I bear it all for the sake of those who are chosen, so that in the end they may have the salvation that is in Christ Jesus and the eternal glory that comes with it.
Here is a saying that you can rely on:
If we have died with him, then we shall live with him.
If we hold firm, then we shall reign with him.
If we disown him, then he will disown us.
We may be unfaithful, but he is always faithful,
for he cannot disown his own self.
Remind them of this; and tell them in the name of God that there is to be no wrangling about words: all that this ever achieves is the destruction of those who are listening. Do all you can to present yourself in front of God as a man who has come through his trials, and a man who has no cause to be ashamed of his life’s work and has kept a straight course with the message of the truth.
The Word of the Lord
R/ Thanks be to God.
Responsorial Psalm
Psalm 24(25):4-5,8-10,14
R/ Lord, make me know your ways.
Lord, make me know your ways.
Lord, teach me your paths.
Make me walk in your truth, and teach me:
for you are God my saviour.
R/ Lord, make me know your ways.
In you I hope all day long
The Lord is good and upright.
He shows the path to those who stray,
He guides the humble in the right path,
He teaches his way to the poor.
R/ Lord, make me know your ways.
His ways are faithfulness and love
for those who keep his covenant and law.
The Lord’s friendship is for those who revere him;
to them he reveals his covenant.

Mark 12:28-34
'You are not far from the kingdom of God'
One of the scribes came up to Jesus and put a question to him, ‘Which is the first of all the commandments?’ Jesus replied, ‘This is the first: Listen, Israel, the Lord our God is the one Lord, and you must love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your mind and with all your strength. The second is this: You must love your neighbour as yourself. There is no commandment greater than these.’ The scribe said to him, ‘Well spoken, Master; what you have said is true: that he is one and there is no other. To love him with all your heart, with all your understanding and strength, and to love your neighbour as yourself, this is far more important than any holocaust or sacrifice.’ Jesus, seeing how wisely he had spoken, said, ‘You are not far from the kingdom of God.’ And after that no one dared to question him any more.

2 Maccabees 7:1-2,9-14
'The King of the world will raise us up to live for ever'
There were seven brothers who were arrested with their mother. The king tried to force them to taste pig’s flesh, which the Law forbids, by torturing them with whips and scourges. One of them, acting as spokesman for the others, said, ‘What are you trying to find out from us? We are prepared to die rather than break the laws of our ancestors.’
With his last breath the second brother exclaimed, ‘Inhuman fiend, you may discharge us from this present life, but the King of the world will raise us up, since it is for his laws that we die, to live again for ever.’
After him, they amused themselves with the third, who on being asked for his tongue promptly thrust it out and boldly held out his hands, with these honourable words, ‘It was heaven that gave me these limbs; for the sake of his laws I disdain them; from him I hope to receive them again.’ The king and his attendants were astounded at the young man’s courage and his utter indifference to suffering.
When this one was dead they subjected the fourth to the same savage torture. When he neared his end he cried, ‘Ours is the better choice, to meet death at men’s hands, yet relying on God’s promise that we shall be raised up by him; whereas for you there can be no resurrection, no new life.’
Responsorial Psalm
Psalm 123(124):2-5,7-8
Our life, like a bird, has escaped from the snare of the fowler.
If the Lord had not been on our side
when men rose up against us,
then would they have swallowed us alive
when their anger was kindled.
Our life, like a bird, has escaped from the snare of the fowler.
Then would the waters have engulfed us,
the torrent gone over us;
over our head would have swept
the raging waters.
Our life, like a bird, has escaped from the snare of the fowler.
Indeed the snare has been broken
and we have escaped.
Our help is in the name of the Lord,
who made heaven and earth.
Our life, like a bird, has escaped from the snare of the fowler.
Gospel Acclamation
Mt5:3
Alleluia, alleluia!
How happy are the poor in spirit:
theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
Alleluia!
Gospel
Matthew 5:1-12
How happy are the poor in spirit
Seeing the crowds, Jesus went up the hill. There he sat down and was joined by his disciples. Then he began to speak. This is what he taught them:
‘How happy are the poor in spirit;
theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
Happy the gentle:
they shall have the earth for their heritage.
Happy those who mourn:
they shall be comforted.
Happy those who hunger and thirst for what is right:
they shall be satisfied.
Happy the merciful:
they shall have mercy shown them.
Happy the pure in heart:
they shall see God.
Happy the peacemakers:
they shall be called sons of God.
Happy those who are persecuted in the cause of right:
theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
‘Happy are you when people abuse you and persecute you and speak all kinds of calumny against you on my account. Rejoice and be glad, for your reward will be great in heaven: this is how they persecuted the prophets before you.’

Genesis 22:9-18
The sacrifice of Isaac
When they arrived at the place God had pointed out to him, Abraham built an altar there, and arranged the wood. Then he bound his son Isaac and put him on the altar on top of the wood. Abraham stretched out his hand and seized the knife to kill his son.
But the angel of the Lord called to him from heaven. ‘Abraham, Abraham’ he said. ‘I am here’ he replied. ‘Do not raise your hand against the boy’ the angel said. ‘Do not harm him, for now I know you fear God. You have not refused me your son, your only son.’ Then looking up, Abraham saw a ram caught by its horns in a bush. Abraham took the ram and offered it as a burnt-offering in place of his son.
Abraham called this place ‘The Lord Provides’, and hence the saying today: On the mountain the Lord provides.
The angel of the Lord called Abraham a second time from heaven. ‘I swear by my own self – it is the Lord who speaks – because you have done this, because you have not refused me your son, your only son, I will shower blessings on you, I will make your descendants as many as the stars of heaven and the grains of sand on the seashore. Your descendants shall gain possession of the gates of their enemies. All the nations of the earth shall bless themselves by your descendants, as a reward for your obedience.’
Responsorial Psalm
Psalm 39(40):7-10,17
Here I am, Lord! I come to do your will.
You do not ask for sacrifice and offerings,
but an open ear.
You do not ask for holocaust and victim.
Instead, here am I.
Here I am, Lord! I come to do your will.
In the scroll of the book it stands written
that I should do your will.
My God, I delight in your law
in the depth of my heart.
Here I am, Lord! I come to do your will.
Your justice I have proclaimed
in the great assembly.
My lips I have not sealed;
you know it, O Lord.
Here I am, Lord! I come to do your will.
O let there be rejoicing and gladness
for all who seek you.
Let them ever say: ‘The Lord is great’,
who love your saving help.
Here I am, Lord! I come to do your will.
When a Feast of the Lord falls on a weekday, there is no reading after the Psalm and before the Gospel.
Gospel Acclamation
Alleluia, alleluia!
Christ became obedient for us unto death, even death on a cross.
Therefore God has exalted him and given him a name which is above every name.
Alleluia!
Gospel
Matthew 26:36-42
My soul is sorrowful to the point of death
Jesus came with them to a small estate called Gethsemane; and he said to his disciples, ‘Stay here while I go over there to pray.’ He took Peter and the two sons of Zebedee with him. And sadness came over him, and great distress. Then he said to them, ‘My soul is sorrowful to the point of death. Wait here and keep awake with me.’
And going on a little further he fell on his face and prayed: ‘My Father, if it is possible, let this cup pass me by. Nevertheless, let it be as you, not I, would have it.’
He came back to the disciples and found them sleeping, and he said to Peter: ‘So you had not the strength to keep awake with me one hour? You should be awake, and praying not to be put to the test. The spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak.’
Again, a second time, he went away and prayed: ‘My Father, if this cup cannot pass by without my drinking it, your will be done!’

Review for ‘The Queen’s Rising’ series by Rebecca Ross
I stayed up until 3am last night to finish this 2-part series and wow oh wow do I not regret it at all. Both the first book, The Queen’s Rising, and its sequel The Queen’s Resistance had pretty slow starts... but jeez once the plots got going they really got going. This duology was one of the many books that I had put on hold awhile ago. I think I originally wanted to read this during my sadgirl post-breakup phase exactly two years ago, a 3-month long period of time where I got broken up with, had an identity crisis, and proceeded to drop out of my sorority while fully embracing my inner nerd. Disclaimer: I loved being in a sorority, I really did. It just took up way too much of my time and I had realized juggling sorority duties and school left me with no time to pursue my own personal hobbies.
BUT ANYWAY, I’m really glad I finished this series and really glad I took my time with it. The Queen’s Rising has a pretty slow start and by start I mean probably the first half of the entire book. But it became super complex with all the court politics going on and honestly it went from slow to holy shit whaT’S HAPPENING AHH over the course of like a chapter halfway through the book. The Queen’s Resistance was more or less the same, except with way more political twists (in my opinion, of course) and a touch more romance. Emphasis on touch, because neither of these books were romance-focused or even had that much romance at all, which was kind of a bummer because hello it’s me the lover of all things sappy romance. But I’ll get to that in a second.
The Queen’s Rising follows a young girl named Brienna who essentially gets dumped by her grandfather at a prestigious academy that trains young girls to become ‘passions’. This refers to someone who is master at one of the five subjects: art, music, drama, wit, and knowledge. Brienna’s mother dies before the start of the story, and Brienna’s father is purposefully kept a secret from her. Brienna herself dabbles in each of the five passions before settling on knowledge, which is taught by Master Cartier. Her biggest fears at the beginning of the book is not being picked up by a patron who will endorse the utilization of her passion, and unfortunately this comes true. But she’s offered by the academy headmistress to stay the summer and continue studying her passion, and the headmistress will try her best to pair her with a suitable patron in a few months. Brienna agrees to this and stays in contact with Master Cartier through letters for much of the summer when suddenly everything changed when the fire nation attacked. Just kidding. Brienna shares her strange visions of a Maevana lord from over a century ago with the headmistress, who gives her the choice to choose a strange man who goes by the name of Jourdain as her patron father. Brienna complies, and basically her entire fate is changed at this point.
So my first thoughts were that I really liked the sisterhood that went on throughout the six girls at the academy. Even though the book opens with the conclusion of their schooling we, as the reader, can still get a glimpse of how deep their relationships go. Ciri was a little bit of a brat, but I personally don’t blame her due to her unusual circumstance of sharing an instructor with someone else and Merei was LITERALLY Brienna’s ride-or-die. Obviously spoilers (because my reviews are always ridden with spoilers), but Merei’s role later on in the plot while they’re all in Maevana had me mentally screaming “YESSS SIS”. Cause honestly if I was Brienna, that’s what I would’ve done, especially when Merei shot Allenach on the battlefield. Well, maybe not if I was bleeding out on the ground but still.
And how could I forget, Brienna the main character. I liked her quite a bit, truly, but if I’m being nit-picky then I definitely do have an issue with how her character progresses in The Queen’s Rising. Brienna starts off as someone who is clearly headstrong and determined, so I guess that’s ultimately the drive that keeps her going through the revolution and such. But I kind of felt like she went from “sheltered girl who’s only ever had time for books” trope to “Maevana warrior who is willing to fight and die for her rightful queen” a little too quickly. I get that she is half Maevan on her dad’s side (who is holy shit such a dick) but it just seems kind of abrupt for her to go from “I grew up as a dainty fair maiden in Valenia my whole entire life and don’t know anything about Maevana outside of what I learned from books” to “I’m going to beg the cruel king of Maevana for my adopted father’s safe passage back into the country and then when no one’s paying attention to me I’m going to scout this land I’ve never been on to look for a stone that has been lost for over a century and everything will be fine” all in the span of... maybe two or three chapters? We are shown that she receives sword/combat lessons from Isolde, the rightful queen of Maevana, but if my mental timeline for this story is correct then those lessons should have only been over the course of maybe two weeks. How much sword technique can a sheltered eighteen-year-old girl actually learn in two weeks? Enough to walk around enemy territory with a concealed weapon and be confident enough to use said weapon when needed? Errr... I don’t know fam that just doesn’t seem realistic.
Another related issue I have with Brienna is that I feel like she embraces Maevana as her home incredibly quickly. In The Queen’s Rising we found out that Master Cartier is actually Lord Aodhan Morgane, the son of Kane Morgane who had survived the failed first uprising as an infant. He, like Brienna, spent virtually his entire life growing up in Valenia and was schooled in the passion of knowledge. In The Queen’s Resistance every other chapter was in Cartier’s POV, so we got a lot of glimpses into his personal thoughts and his own struggles with returning to Maevana. Unlike Brienna, Cartier/Aodhan really struggled with settling into Maevana, being a Lord, finding his place in a land that he didn’t grow up in, and trying to be a leader to people he had never met before. A lot of the first half of The Queen’s Resistance was centered around Cartier/Aodhan’s inner turmoil in these regards, whereas Brienna (in BOTH books) never seemed to have this struggle despite having a very similar upbringing. Brienna just seems to fit right into Maevana in a way that doesn’t seem particularly realistic or natural given the circumstances that surround her upbringing.
Now onto the romance! The romance is all centered between Brienna and Cartier, and there are some subtle hints at the beginning of The Queen’s Rising that indicates this is the main relationship throughout the story. However, like the plot this relationship does not really exist or evolve in any way until after the halfway point of the book, when Brienna finds out that Cartier and Lord Morgane are one and the same. Which, by the way, came as a HUGE shocker to me. I DEFINITELY did not see that coming. I assumed Cartier would show up in Maevana in some way or another, but definitely not like that. It was a great twist though, and having both Brienna and Cartier in Allenach’s castle made for a great yet somewhat slow-burn romance. Admittedly, the romance aspect was pretty negligible in The Queen’s Rising. There’s a little bit more emphasis on their relationship in the sequel, but even then it’s not all that much... unfortunately. I really liked these two, and I thought the matching constellations on their passion cloaks were JUST SO DAMN TOUCHING. And the ending of The Queen’s Resistance with the whole golden thread tradition low key had me clutching my chest for a solid two seconds. So the final verdict here is that for the little bits of romance that this series featured, it was beautiful. But ultimately romance wasn’t the focus, nor was it even an emphasis, and if I could have things my way I would’ve definitely liked there to be a little more romance building and one-on-one moments between the pair.
Let’s see... I’m racking my memory for any notable thoughts on some of the side characters. Not gonna lie, Isolde fell pretty flat to me and despite her being the queen I personally could not bring myself to care all that much for her. Luc was a jolly guy, but again not very notable or stand-out-ish in a good way. While it doesn’t bother me, I do have to ask what was the point of Neeve’s character? She shows up in The Queen’s Resistance, and we learn pretty early on that she’s actually another one of Brienna’s half siblings through her father. I don’t understand why Neeve was cast aside by Allenach, after all wasn’t she a daughter that he so desperately wanted? Illegitimacy didn’t matter to him anyway, he could’ve just legitimized her and the fact that Neeve’s mother was dead meant that Allenach didn’t need to worry about anyone influencing Neeve aside from himself. Was Allenach banking THAT much on Brienna? I dunno, none of Neeve’s backstory really makes sense to me or brings much value to the plot either. I like the character just fine, I just don’t understand her purpose... aside from being a long-lost half-sister to the main character.
I also kept thinking Sean Allenach would eventually betray the queen’s side but he never did, which also makes little sense to me. I mean I guess deep down he really is just a good kid, but it just seems so unlikely for that to be the case when both his older brother and his father are incredibly cruel people. I understood why Ewan and Keela didn’t take after their father, Declan Lannon, because after all they always had each other and they had Tomas who was always a good guy trying to set them on a better path. So for Sean, who seemingly did not have any kind of positive influence to counter the shitty influence that is his brother and father, to be such a kind person willing to undermine his own father’s power just seems statistically unlikely I guess?
And finally, the ending of The Queen’s Resistance with the whole thing about Cartier/Aodhan’s mother still being alive was... good GOD. She was the bone sweeper??? SERIOUSLY? Now that’s a fucking plot twist that I would’ve never saw coming. My heart definitely hurt for Lile, and her written account of what had happened to her over the last 25 years nearly brought tears to my eyes. I do wonder though, when Declan said he loved Lile was he referring to romantic love or the love shared between a mother and son? I was assuming the second type of love, since Declan kept referring to Cartier/Aodhan as ‘brother’. But in Lile’s written account of what happened in her life she writes that she took the Lannon name after ten years in the dungeons. I feel like there’s a lot of ambiguity as to what that actually means. Did she essentially become Declan’s consort? Or did she remain a motherly figure to him and her sharing Declan’s family name made it more real for him? I hope it’s the second one, because I would feel VERY uncomfortable if it were the first case.
When I started this series, I thought I had it all figured out. I guessed that Brienna was the rightful Kavanagh queen within the first chapter, but little did I know the author wanted to tell the story about the queen’s right hand woman, not the queen herself. Which is a very unique approach to a story and I think Ross did quite well (despite the queen herself falling flat as a character. Perhaps some sacrifices need to be made if the story is to emphasize someone other than the queen). Again, I do wish there was a bigger emphasis on Brienna and Cartier’s relationship. I enjoyed Brienna enough, but I simply adored Cartier/Aodhan and I admit I really wanted to see more interactions between the two through Cartier’s POV. I almost wish the last chapter of The Queen’s Resistance was written in Cartier’s POV because I wanted to know what thoughts swirled through his head while he was looking for the golden thread in the tapestry. Petitioning for a prequel novella, completely through Cartier’s POV, during the seven years he spent watching Brienna grow up dabbling in other passions before choosing to become a passion of knowledge. I would pay dumb money to read this. And I would go broke, because I would pay a lot of money to read a lot of things.

Unique Places to Get Married in Maryland - A Guide
Tumblr media
One of the hardest things to do when planning your special day is to spend hours scouring the internet looking for a unique, classy, and un-used location for your wedding. I've spent the past two days in searching for that oh so elusive perfect spot. I'm going to save you all the trouble I went through and compile all the spots I found through obscure Google searches and message boards and put these locations in one place. Welcome to your one stop shop for unique wedding locations all over Maryland. For your convince I've put them into genre such as "Castle Theme", "Relaxed Theme", etc. so if you're really in a knot, you don't have to spend your whole day looking when you could be finding the perfect pair of shoes to go with your dress. Here we go:
Castles:
Cloisters Castle: This private home that was commissioned and completed in a twenty seven year span screams with uniqueness. From the exterior built of Butler gold and gray stone, gables taken from a medieval house in France as well as medallions from a 16th century Venetian home, it's a work of architectural brilliance. Located in Luthersville, MD this venue is surrounded by sixty acres of trees and a lovely garden. Its insides are furnished with authentic medieval pieces and antique furniture. The fireplace was even commissioned to be built from an antique chest carved with Renaissance figures. Famously, it was the site of actor Will Smith's and Jada Pinkett's wedding in 1998 but that hasn't put a damper on the delightful and unforgettable atmosphere the house creates. Either the outside or the inside can be made available and there is only one event per day, allowing your day to be uninterrupted in its magic. The fee for rental allows for up to ten hours on the grounds and more time can negotiated through the contract via an extra hour's fee. The venue comfortably fits 175 guests and as a bonus the staff acts as your wedding planner directing set-up, timing, and valet parking.
Maryvale Castle : Functioning as a preparatory school, Maryvale Castle boasts huge grounds complete with wedding chapel if the bride doesn't envision herself walking down the castle's much talked of grand winding staircase. Built in 1917 in Greenspring Valley, MD, this treasure houses an oak-paneled Great Hall, a solarium, and a bridal suite. A stone manor house sweeping off in both directions takes its influences from Warwick Castle in England with its Gothic arched windows, port cochere, and imposing gray towers. A rental agreement includes four hours of time which includes the rehearsal time and full use of the property. However, because it is still a working school, hours on the weekdays are more restricted than weekends. With an indoor guest capacity of 125 people and an outdoor capacity of 200, this venue is worth the strict appointment-only tour.
Mansions:
Montpelier Mansion: A mansion straight out of a Jane Austin piece, this brick Georgian structure sits on seventy acres of land flanked by dogwood trees. Built between 1781 and 1785 this national historic landmark is open to the public for tours and festivities and once housed George Washington and his wife Martha. It is also home to an uncommonly found 18th century summer house which is beautifully preserved. The maximum capacity inside and outside is somewhat small, eighty-five guests total, but the unique floor plan with crown molding and period furniture lends itself to an opulent and old-fashioned charm all its own. For people set on a Sunday wedding this venue isn't for you as they don't allow rentals on Sundays, however, having free reign over this delicate place is well worth the date change. Located in Laurell this mansion radiates country elegance akin to many a bride's favorite novel, complete with circular stone driveway.
Glenveiw Mansion: Situated in Rockville, MD as part of a Rockville Civic Center Park the house is within the neoclassical tradition sporting pillars and an infinite number of beautiful black shuttered windows looking out over the lawn. The dining room is veiled in class and luxury as are its floor-to-ceiling dark paneled wooden walls and long oval windows. The conservatory shines with old-fashioned chandeliers whose light bounces off the Italian green marble floors. The rest of the house is touched with intricate details pertaining to the period in which it was first built housing a number of turn of the century, one- of- a- kind antiques sure to make any wedding memorable. Maximum capacity for this venue is 225 guests and amount charged allows for two hours of set-up and one hour of clean-up. Some strict drawbacks to possible brides are the impossibilities of seated dining, no cooking allowed on-site, and no red-dyed beverages of any kind.
Stronghold Mansion: On top of Sugarloaf Mountain in Dickerson, MD the completely white mansion with pillars and latticed widow's peak lends itself to the country simplicity surrounding it. The straight lawns emphasize the well designed rock walls that glide around the property housing a variety of elegant but simple flora and fauna normally seen in a country garden. The shimmering, circular lake to the side of the house has large willow trees surrounding it and making a path towards the house itself where the architecture inside matches the outside in its refined gentile decor. A standard contract allows for 7 hours and includes set-up and clean-up times. . Additional hours can be negotiated. Maximum number of guests in attendance is 200 and the rental includes 40 by 57 inch tent over the patio and can be added on to encompass the lake area as well. Parking is limited as there are only 85 spots available and clearly marked by the owners , small shuttle buses are permitted.
Liriodendron Mansion: An 1898 ornate masterpiece encompassed by a landscape dripping with flowers, this antique summer home in Harford County leaves nothing unchecked in your imagination. Whether it's the Grecian old-world architecture built around intricate carvings, urns of flowers and stone pillars, or the wisteria vines that form a canopy over the porch for a otherworldly rehearsal dinner, the house is awash in magic all its own. The Palladian styled mansion reminds guests of a fairyland surrounded by woods and fountains with a variety of romantic stone sculptures throughout the grounds. Maximum capacity is 150 guests outside, 100 guests inside with seating and there are plenty of guests parking. The renter has a choice of 6.5 hrs on weekdays where as on weekends they must choose between both rental times and party times in a wide selection of choices. Wedding rehearsals are extra payment as well as table and chair rental fees, but this is no different from most other venues.
Tudor Place: This home to Martha Washington's late granddaughter, Martha Custic Peter, is bursting at the seams with rich history and warm, comfortable elegance. The house itself was built in 1805 by Dr. William Thorton who was also famous for building the first United States Capital and The Octagon building in Washington, DC. Inside the house there are over one hundred objects belonging to George and Martha Washington and it's all been documented in an archived collection of letters, diaries, books, and photographs. As far as guests, the mansion can hold up to 35 guests for a wedding ceremony and for parties over 35 guests they must pay extra. This venue is for ceremonies only and the reservation includes an hour block of time for that ceremony. They also have their own on sight photography for a fee.
Ceresville Mansion: With a variety of ceremony options to suit any bride as well as an in-house consultant to coordinate everything smoothly, this Mansion comes with superior services. Whether the perfect wedding uses their white Grecian Pergola surrounded by dogwoods in bloom, or the terrace climbing with Ivy and backlit with candles shimmering over the reflecting lily pool, it will be something to remember. The white and black sweeping Cape Cod style home was built in 1888 alongside rivers, hillsides, and a ten acre meadow also open for events. Much of the original architecture as well as the antique furniture and fireplace are still the same as 1888. This venue has everything covered in the rental fee from seven hours of event coordination to all the outside details a catering company would normally provide like linens and a dance floor. Every Thursday evening they also offer an unusual wedding discount for those on a budget and cut the price nearly in half for the same services as a Friday or Saturday wedding event. The venue can provide for up to 200 guests and also gives a complimentary list of Food and Beverage minimum pricing so it is free of confusion and out of the way.
Inns and Taverns:  Flower Wall Rental Los Angeles
Slades Inn and Tavern: A Victorian dream painted in lively light blues and dark blues, this Inn sets itself apart with two matching circular turrets, high brick chimneys and a white wrap-around porch that Anne of Green Gables would envy. The laid-back romantic space is in Fredrick, MD a few minutes away from Baltimore. The land is dappled with greenery and horses while the exciting night-life and history of the city are in close proximity. Enjoy an easy day as all the guests are accommodated with places to stay after the reception and perhaps even stay past the ceremony for a honeymoon to enjoy hot air ballooning or a carriage tour. From beginning to end of that extraordinary day, Slade's takes care of everything from "his and hers" massages, bridal party hair and makeup sessions, as well as brunches and teas. Indoor buffet seating is for 100 guests whereas larger parties can be accommodated with tents for seated dinners and dancing for up to 150. Once the party is over, guests too busy having fun can tumble up to their rooms leaving the bride and groom clear and free of worry.

Whereas the kids play in the trip play area, you can stroll together across palm-tree-lined walking paths and relax on the trees and bushes.

A dinosaur exhibition is a fantastic thing for young to sit for hours exploring.

Chris Evans Fic: Hiking and Hypocrisy (Chapter 4)
To give him his due, Chris had strolled silently at your side for the last thirty minutes without complaining. He’d let Dodger off his lead once you were a little ways from the parking lot and he’d found a decent sized stick to throw for Dodger to fetch back again, which he did, time after time. You side glanced at him occasionally as you walked, desperately trying to keep your interest under wraps, and you realised you hadn’t taken in his appearance earlier.
He was actually dressed pretty well in dark grey cargo shorts in a soft but sturdy material and a lighter grey sweat-wicking tshirt. It was high end hiking gear, you could tell from the logos, but he’d managed to choose for comfort and practicality, not just for the brand. His hiking shoes were trainer style, rather than boots, which wasn’t great for ankle support but you figured he’d be okay on this day hike. The paths weren’t difficult to navigate and surfaces were fairly even so it didn’t concern you too much. However, you hoped his socks were sweat-wicking too or those brand new hiking shoes were going to shred his feet. But, you reminded yourself, he was here by choice and any time he got too uncomfortable, he was more than welcome to turn back, obviously.
Eventually, he broke the silence as you headed into the first valley. You supposed it was inevitable really.
‘So, do you hike often?’
You replied without looking at him, ‘Calling something a hobby generally implies one does it at least fairly frequently.’
You heard him sniggering at your side and you swivelled your head to look at him, unimpressed.
‘What’s so funny?’
‘Nothing. You won’t like it if I tell you, so nothing,’ he threw the stick for Dodger again, his muscles in his arm flexing against the soft fabric of his tshirt.
You rolled your eyes, knowing he was toying with you on purpose.
‘Go on, I’ll bite. Just tell me.’
But he just laughed even harder before answering.
‘My, my, we are full of innuendos today, aren’t we?’
You were momentarily confused as you thought over what you had said and then realisation dawned: doing ‘something’ fairly frequently made it a hobby… reference to biting… Jesus.
‘Oh my god, you’re an actual child,’ you huffed, indignant.
‘You said those things, not me!’ He tried to defend himself, ‘It’s not my fault these innuendos just drop out of your mouth.’
You wanted to tell him that they only became innuendos when he made them so, but you were done talking to him now, two minutes in. Instead, you picked up your pace and he had to jog a little to catch back up with you.
‘Hey, look, I’m sorry. Didn’t realise it was national no-sense-of-humour-day.’
You trained your eye-line straight ahead, determined and focused, maintaining a mantra of ‘do not react, do not react.’
In your peripheral vision, you saw him jog a little ahead and then walk backwards so he could look you in the face as you went.
‘Not talking to me anymore? Shame. We were doing so well.’
When you didn’t answer, or even glance in his direction, Chris fell back in line at your side before doing a stage whisper to Dodger.
‘Well buddy, I think she might be afraid that if she talks to me, she’ll like me, and then I’ll win the bet.’
You stopped dead in your tracks.
‘It is not a b-‘
The sight of his stupid, shit-eating grin shining out from under that ridiculous cap cut you off. You couldn’t believe you’d fallen for that. For fuck’s sake. Might as well own it now, you thought.
‘It is not a bet. And there’s seriously no chance of me actually liking you so talk all you want. I might answer, I might not. Either way it changes nothing.’
You started up again, your feet crunching against the dirt path.
He left you alone for a few minutes, busy working on his game of fetch with Dodger, before he started up again.
‘Aren’t you interested to know how I got all this stuff for today, when you didn’t even text me until yesterday evening?’
You were actually, in truth. Outwardly though, you just shrugged. He was going to tell you anyway, you knew.
‘I actually enlisted some help. It got to like Thursday night and I was fairly certain you weren’t going to text me so the next day I took matters into my own hands.’
You could just imagine the delight on every female member of staff’s face in whatever outdoor supplies store he walked into as he asked for help.
‘Let me guess, the most blonde, buxom, shameless employee you could find in the store? Bet you made her day.’
‘Actually, there were three of them, about this tall,’ he held a palm out to about the height of his hip. ‘Definitely male. Dark hair. Very knowledgeable about hiking but they told me they had a good teacher. They only asked for pizza and ice cream in payment so I figured it was a good deal.’
You remembered what he’d said about taking the kids out for dinner yesterday.
‘The Mackie kids helped you do your shopping?’ You were incredulous.
‘Yeah, they really sorted me out. Whatever you’ve been teaching them is sinking in. Told me I needed pockets in my shorts, and soft material so I didn’t chafe. Mackie’s kid, talking to me about chafing, can you believe it?’
You just imagined the scene in your mind’s eye and couldn’t help but smile.
‘And they did it all without a list from me,’ you stated rather than asked, a hint of pride lacing your words.
‘Yeah, your list came far too late. I mean, I’m pretty sure they talked me into buying things I didn’t actually need as a first timer but at least I’m well prepared.’
‘Don’t get too cocky, Boy Scout, we’ll see how long you last,’ you nodded towards a grey cloud just peeking out over the top of the valley, ‘I think we’re in for a rain shower.’
Now that wasn’t in the forecast, but you knew the weather could change quickly around here, the mountains tending to dictate the weather in their own way. But Chris didn’t seem fazed, the rest of the sky was still blue after all, and the sun was still out and warm.
‘Baby, I’ve got all the protection required and can last as long as you need me to, that’s a promise,’ he was only jokingly suggestive but you couldn’t help the blush that crept up your throat and cheeks.
***
If Chris thought he could win you over with a cute dog and a few instances of choosing to hang out with his buddy’s kids on a Friday night, instead of whatever it was that Hollywood stars usually did, he was very much mistaken.
However, trying to ignore him constantly was getting exhausting and you still had a good six hours of walking left to do, plus breaks for snacks and lunch, and so you reluctantly settled into answering his questions. It wasn’t quite conversation but he spoke and you sometimes responded.
‘It’ll be lunch time soon. You getting hungry?’
His face dropped, ‘Shit! I forgot to bring food! Fuck, I thought I was so prepared!’
You stared at him, deadpan.
‘You came out on an eight hour hike through the mountains, without any food?’
‘Yeah, yeah, I know, I’m an idiot.’
‘Good job I packed extra rations, isn’t it? I’ll share, but only because I don’t know what I’d do with all this heavy muscle if you fainted from exhaustion.’
‘You wouldn’t just leave me for the wolves?’ He grinned at you.
‘Don’t get excited. Not wishing death upon you is not the same as liking you,’ you pointed towards the path ahead and the way it curved upwards through the trees, ‘If we walk for another half an hour, we can get to the top of this ridge and the view is amazing. That will be a good place to stop.’
‘Not even a little bit?’ he was still grinning, referring to your not liking him comment.
‘Don’t push your luck,’ you warned firmly, although not as acerbic as you had been.
‘Okay, okay. Lead the way.’
You carried on up the path, your pace a little more purposeful now there was an end point in place. Dodger was still trotting along merrily, investigating the woodland around him, and you and Chris took turns throwing sticks for him as you ascended the side of the valley, heading towards the viewpoint. There were a few other people on the trail, mostly heading in the opposite direction, and you got a little tense every time you crossed each other, wondering whether they’d recognise Chris, but so far, no one had stopped him at least.
You realised the need for the cap.
‘I get it now,’ you told him after you’d passed a group of hikers heading down into the valley.
‘Get what?’
‘The cap and glasses combo. Keeps you hidden.’
‘Oh. Yeah,’ you thought he seemed a little bashful, ‘Force of habit now, I guess.’
‘Does it get really bad?’ You asked, genuinely intrigued. Chris was a little more ‘out there’ than Mackie, you thought. He was more of a news item, the handsome bachelor, whereas Mackie was married with a family that he kept pretty much under wraps.
‘It’s not awful. I can blend in most times. It’s easier when I’ve not got my Cap body, and I’m a bit smaller. But fans tend to be respectful most of the time. It’s the media that’s the worst part, but you have to kind of play their game. I think I’m probably okay out here though,’ he nodded towards your surroundings with a smile.
‘Yeah, can’t imagine there’s many paps lying in wait for you in the woodland.’
‘It’s peaceful. Free. Wouldn’t believe we’re only an hour outside of LA.’
‘That’s why I like it too,’ you agreed with him, and you walked on in something approaching companionable quiet.
***
Reaching the summit, you paused to turn in a slow circle and take in the breathtaking view down the valley.
‘Now that is something,’ Chris’ voice was quiet and awed at your side.
‘I know, right?’ You breathed out. It was beautiful, even with the grey clouds gathering to the north. You frowned in their direction. You weren’t bothered about getting wet, but a storm could be a bigger problem out here. You were a little under half way around the trail now, so there was no quick way back. There was a strong possibility you were just going to have to grit your teeth and bear it. There were some wooden shelters dotted about the park, mainly for bird watching, but it wasn’t exactly pleasant during stormy conditions.
‘What’s the problem?’ Chris asked, noticing your furrowed brow.
‘Those clouds aren’t looking very inviting. It might get a little rough later,’ you told him honestly.
‘That’s okay, I’m tough, I can deal with it,’ he flexed a bicep for show, mischief on his face as always, and you rolled your eyes.
‘I can’t believe you actually just did that,’ you pulled his arm down, feeling embarrassed for him, ‘Come on, let’s have lunch.’
There was a rock formation at the summit that had sort of been fashioned into a seating area and viewing platform for hikers to rest after the uphill climb and admire the view. You sat on the flat surface, crossing your legs under you and swinging your back pack off your shoulders and round to your front. Chris followed suit, letting his legs dangle off the side of the rock, leaning back on to the heels of his palms. Dodger sat patiently on the ground at his feet, and lapped up water thirstily when Chris set his bowl down next to him.
You dug out your lunch boxes and prised off the lids to reveal sandwiches, fruit, nuts, houmous and veggie sticks.
‘Help yourself,’ you gestured towards it all.
‘That is quite a picnic. How many people were you actually planning on feeding today?’ Chris reached over for a turkey, brie and cranberry sandwich.
You shrugged, tucking into the salmon and watercress sandwiches in another box, ‘The kids almost always want more food than they bring and obviously I thought they’d be here today.’
‘They really look up to you, you know?’ Chris threw out casually, ‘That’s how I know you’re not as mean as you make out.’
You looked up at him sharply but he just beamed at you.
‘I’ve been around them their whole lives pretty much. The Mackies are definitely the family I got to choose.’
You could see out of the corner of your eye a family appearing over into view as they clambered the last few metres to the flat summit. A couple of kids and two adults close behind. A pretty nice way to spend a family day out, you thought.
Then the dog appeared, what looked to be a beagle and the moment it spotted Dodger, it made a beeline for him. Dodger didn’t mind, as it so happened, and they said hello pleasantly before launching straight into play bows, tails and tongues wagging in playful excitement.
‘Jake, go and fetch him, will you? He’s annoying that poor dog,’ you heard who you assumed to be the mom in the family say to who looked to be the oldest son. The younger son, no more than five maybe, came bounding alongside his older brother just as Chris was calling out that it was fine, the dogs were getting on just great.
The boys approached and tried to tempt their beagle away from Dodger, but they were having too much fun now so the boys just stopped while they waited for the game to finish.
At some point, the younger boy looked at Chris and did a double take.
‘Captain America?!’ He asked, voice breathless with shock. ‘What are you doing here?’
You froze in your place on the rock, barely daring to even look over at Chris to see his reaction. How would he respond to this? God, you couldn’t take it if he was mean to this little guy! Granted you didn’t have a massively high opinion of him, but this would push you over the edge.
But, you were even more in shock when you heard Chris speak, his voice deep and controlled and very serious. You almost didn’t recognise it.
‘I’m here on a very top secret mission. Can I have some identification please? What is your name?’
‘Jake Matthews,’ the little boy bounced excitedly.
‘Well, Agent Matthews, I’m here today with Agent Fifteen to investigate some unusual activity in the valley. We’re undercover and we think there might be a secret Hydra lair down there.’
Agent Fifteen - was that you?!
‘Hydra are in the forest!?’ The little boy gave a look of serious concern. By this time, the boys parents had wandered over and were watching the exchange, practically without blinking.
‘They’re not armed, don’t worry. We think it is more of base, where plans are made in secret. We just need to get vital information from there,’ Chris quickly deflected.
The boy nodded, enthralled.
‘So, Agent Matthews, are you ready for a mission?’ Chris asked, still in his Captain America mode and the little guy nodded enthusiastically.
‘Take these contact details,’ Chris glanced up at the parents to give an indication that this was all very normal as he pulled what looked like a business card out of the wallet from his back pocket, ‘And if you should see anything unusual, you report it to this number here by text with your mom or dad. Can you do that for me, Agent?’
Jake nodded again, clutching the card like it was the most precious thing he’d ever been given in his life.
Chris stood up and saluted, the boy instantly straightening his back and copying him.
‘Mom, Dad, I got to go kick some Hydra butt!’ He called out as he ran off along the path.
‘Jake!’ His mom called after him, half heartedly scolding him for his phrasing but you were listening to Chris explain the business card to the boy’s father once Jake was out of earshot.
‘…so if you text that number later, he’ll just get a message signed Captain America, thanking him for his service.’
‘You’ve actually made his day, thank you so much man,’ the father replied, shaking his hand.
‘Not a problem, enjoy the rest of your day.’
The family quickly wandered off in the direction Jake had taken, calling their dog with whistles to come with them.
Chris sat back down next to you and you stared at him in disbelief. He caught you staring and looked sheepish.
‘What?’ He asked when you remained silent.
‘You know what! So you’re the type of actor that just carries around business cards for his superhero alter ego, in case you come across fans?!’ You were flabbergasted, but, you had to admit, a little impressed.
Chris rubbed the back of his neck, embarrassed, ‘I know it seems over the top but the kids love it, the idea they can send a message to Captain America and help save the world. Someone at Marvel helped me set it up.’
You smiled at him, looking away quickly when you realised, pretending to be taking in the view.
‘That’s a really great thing to do,’ you told him sincerely, still gazing out over the mountains.
You could see Chris in your periphery, helping himself to carrot sticks and houmous.
‘I saw you smile at me then, you know, for the first time,’ he teased.
‘Don’t ruin it,’ you half-joked back.

The Bluest, Clearest Waters On The Oregon Coast Shopping
Check out some extra the reason why you have to visit Palawan within the Philippines (residence to some of the finest beaches on the planet), here. Malaysia’s seashores have an enormous amount to supply, whatever it is you’re looking for. check this out
Travel Contests & Sweepstakes: Win Luxury Holidays!
Built in 1850, the Sankaty Head Light is well value a wander to the northern tip of the beach (it is hardly ever open to climb, besides on particular days—the next one being Sunday, June sixteen, 201`9). Best of all, though, is the ‘Sconset Bluff Walk—with the strong Atlantic on one facet and a row of multi-million-greenback homes on the opposite. Waves listed here are rough, even in summer, so bundle up for a long winter walk should you're on the island during the off season. Banana Beach has a backdrop of impossibly-green jungle and appears out on crystal-clear water—all part of a national park and marine preservation area (30 minutes by boat from Chalong Pier on Phuket). Banana Boat rides are popular, therefore the name, as is snorkeling, sea kayaking, and parasailing.
Boracay White Beach, Philippines
The waters are calm and excellent for sunfish crusing between anchored boats and out to Fort Berkeley, constructed in 1704 by the English Royal Navy. At the japanese most flank of the island, Siasconset can be reached from city via a six-mile bike journey on the Milestone Road path (or, in the summertime, on a NRTA shuttle bus). Food and restrooms may be discovered close by within the adjacent historic village of 'Sconset.
Meeru Island, North Atoll, Maldives
This is a seashore that is popular worldwide for the grand waterfall that varieties a part of the beach and flows into the ocean. Now, I don't mean a small, cute man-made waterfall like many resorts have. The waterfalls at Dunn's River are a whopping one hundred eighty feet excessive feat of nature that circulate over limestone rock to meet a cerulean ocean down beneath. Since the river flows proper into the ocean, many beachgoers float leisurely down the cool water anticipating the moment when the cool water will meet the warm ocean for a uncommon expertise. Those who need to make like Tarzan, can climb the swings that hang over the river and swing carefreely whereas making an attempt to spot the elusive supply of the melodic chirps coming from the trees.
Bingin Beach, Bali, Indonesia
As a result, there are about a hundred and fifty rescues every year, the very best number in Sydney's southern beaches. It is claimed to be the most harmful patrolled seaside in all of Australia. The beaches alongside Sydney's south side are a few of its most famous and exquisite, but one specifically is best enjoyed with maximum warning.
Find Your Next Beach Getaway
It is getting simpler for Americans to journey there, as this reportin the New York Times Points out. Experience distant and unique before the beautiful fantastic thing about this stretch of sand becomes extra widespread information. Don’t confuse it with one other unbelievable seashore by the same name in Tulum, Mexico.
The stings of a few of the varieties of jellyfish, like the Irukandji and Chironex fleckeri, could be fatal to humans. This seaside is rumored to be among the greatest surf spots on the planet, however few actually try and ride its legendary barrels to shore. The surrounding space is peppered with navy amenities, although that's not what makes these waters dangerous.
When you’re right here (and of course, depending on the place you’re staying some beaches value trying out here are Cove Beach, Liku Beach, and Vatulele Island). With its 333 tropical islands and over 500 islets, there’s plenty to explore – which is especially great when you discover that spending all your time on a beach isn’t your idea of an ideal holiday.
Whether they are backed by impressive rock formations, rugged cliffs, or gently swaying palm timber, these lovely seashores actually have to be seen to be believed. It's practically unimaginable to choose a favorite seaside in the Maldives—what with over 1,200 to select from—however we're drawn to the North Malé Atoll, and Reethi Rah specifically. Eight good strands of sand circle this bigger-than-average island, each seemingly higher than the subsequent—and with just one resort here, it by no means feels crowded.
With minimal infrastructure, and one restaurant constructed out of bamboo, this can be a great, much less-than-crowded spot to park your self for the day in the solar. It's less of a swimming locale, however you'll have plenty of photographs to publish on Instagram. Survival International also introduced that authorities on India’s Andaman Islands have failed to end human safaris to the vulnerable Jarawa tribe by their self-imposed deadline of March 2015. he Andaman Administration promised to open a sea route to the Islands’ hottest tourist destinations, which might cease tourists needing to drive via the Jarawa’s reserve.
But a rising occurrence of jellyfish assaults (there are more than 1 tonne’s worth of jellyfish right here!) means its seashores are best loved from a distance. The Bahamas has a few of the Caribbean's most spectacular, idyllic seashores. This beach accommodates the largest focus of tiger sharks on the planet, and ranks as one of the planet’s top 10 most shark-infested seashores. Tamarama Beach is wedged between two sandstone headlands, and the excessive-depth waves make sure that two rips are present on the seashore.
Adventure junkies and budding mermaids can explore the country’s beautiful coast by scuba diving (or if you’re not certified yet – by snorkelling). There are plenty of different kinds of beaches right here so that you’ll undoubtedly find one thing to make you very happy if you visit. Despite the nation’s rising recognition, there are a selection of quieter beaches tucked away simply waiting to be explored. Seek out hidden gems like Gunung Payung or Pandawa Beach to benefit from the Bali coast away from the crowds.
In fact, I’d go as far as saying many people plan our holidays round beautiful seashores (stunning seashores do have a tendency to come back hand-in-hand with beautiful weather so there’s a rationale behind those choices). The Costa del Sol region in southern Spain, within Andalusia, is a very stunning stretch of European coast (Malaga, anybody?).
With its steep hillsides, pink sands and glittering ocean, Komodo’s magnificence is almost as fierce because the world-famous ‘dragons’ that roam the island. It’s a world-class place to dive, and with its tiny inhabitants of just 2000 locals, the environment is authentic and laid-back.
Lying on Mexico’s Caribbean shoreline, Tulum is not only residence to one of many country’s greatest-preserved Mayan ruins, however considered one of its greatest seashores too. Tulum was built around 1200 AD when the Mayan civilization was already in decline and therefore lacks the magnificence of another famous sites. The tropical beach backdrop nevertheless makes this one of the most in style vacationer destinations in Mexico that could be a heaven for the photographer or artist.
Boa Viagem Beach has one of many highest shark attack rates in the world – fifty six within the final 20 years, with a death fee of about 37 %. Sharks use the ditch off the coast as a migratory route and do their searching within the surrounding shallows. A development boom has worsened the state of affairs, disrupting marine life and leaving sharks trying to find new sources of food. Third – “Kauna’oa Bay, Hawaii” – That photograph is definitely the Berjaya Resort in Langkawi Island.
Western Australia is house to some critically critical creatures, and Cable Beach in Broome has a particularly large concentration of scary animals. On land there are toxic snakes and spiders, and within the water, lethal field jellyfish and white pointer sharks roam. Cairns, in North Queensland, may be the gateway to the Great Barrier Reef, but its waters maintain far more than that. The time between November and June is notoriously known as "stinger season" because of the jellyfish that infest the area’s waters.
From the desert-island-really feel of Playa de Ses Illetes on the Balearic Islands to the spectacular rock formations of Playa de las Catedrales in Ribadeo, Spain’s shoreline is one that just keeps on giving. Australia is a big nation (the 6th largest on the earth by space) with an enormous quantity of shoreline, so it comes as no surprise that it’s residence to a number of the finest seashores on the earth.
The hazard lies beneath the waves, the place old nuclear submarines lay on the bottom, slowly leaking radiation. Dumas Beach within the state of Gujarat, along the Arabian Sea, is taken into account to be some of the haunted seashores on the planet. Originally a cremation ground, it's reportedly home to spirits that proceed to roam its shores. What’s not to love a couple of beach where crystalline water meets sugary sand? Fortunately, there are greater than 600 islands in Micronesia, so if the destination is in your travel bucket record, you can opt for an island that is extra like a Tahitian paradise and less like Chernobyl.
Fringed with coconut timber, virtually all lodge buildings usually face toward the beach. Diving-fishing facilities and boat tours to close by islands could be arranged.
The pure Doctor's Cave seaside sits in Montego Bay the place most guests to Jamaica discover lodging. As if the presence of a picturesque waterfall isn't magical enough, visitors to this beach get to really explore the waterfalls by becoming a member of guided hikes up into the waterfall. A hike takes you past naturally shaped cool pools earlier than encountering the more highly effective sections of the waterfall. Dunn's River Falls and Beach, located in the town of Ocho Rios is a should for anyone who truly loves nature.

Can Your Personal Choices Curb Climate Change? Not Even Scientists Agree.
Kim Cobb traveled to the Kiritimati coral reefs in the spring of 2016 and found, to her horror, an underwater graveyard.
A climate scientist at the Georgia Institute of Technology, Cobb was alarmed to see this precious research site in the Pacific Ocean in such visible distress. The reefs were mostly dead after months of being in abnormally warm ocean waters.
Then that fall Donald Trump was elected president, dashing Cobb’s hopes of the US implementing the environmental rules needed to prevent a warmer world. “It became clear after the election not only was that hope misplaced, but it was actually never going to be enough,” Cobb told BuzzFeed News.
And so, she underwent a “wholesale reorganization” of her life, she said, including biking to work, rarely flying, going vegetarian, investing in expensive residential rooftop solar panels, and getting involved in her community’s new transportation plans.
A growing number of scientists and activists are, like Cobb, taking dramatic personal steps to decrease their personal carbon footprint. But stopping the activities that make a real difference — flying, driving, eating meat, and having children — is for most people a big sacrifice, and even climate experts disagree about whether they have a moral imperative to do so.
The camp that’s going all out includes a 400-person Facebook group called #BirthStrike, formed in December 2018, for people who have decided “not to bear children due to the severity of the ecological crisis.” And hundreds of climate scientists have vowed to scale back on flying.
“I think it’s a good thing for climate messengers to ‘walk the talk,’” said Peter Kalmus, an associate project scientist at the University of California, Los Angeles, who has stopped flying altogether and created the website No Fly Climate Sci for others to publicly share why they are flying less. “It makes the message much more effective.”
Other scientists point out, though, that without strict laws to curb carbon emissions, no individual’s choices matter all that much. For them, the most important action is political — to try to change the direction of national and global policies.
If everyone who already cared about climate change “reduced their carbon emissions to zero, it doesn’t actually change very much,” said Gavin Schmidt, director of the NASA Goddard Institute for Space Studies. Making your home energy efficient is nothing compared to laws that would require all buildings to be greener. Buying solar panels for your roof doesn’t pack the same climate punch as electric companies relying more on solar farms, and less on coal plants, to feed the grid.
“Agitating and voting and writing letters and op-eds,” Schmidt said, “make far more sense” for promoting systemic change.
Many people who care about climate change are wrestling with what, if anything, they can do about it. Although many of the most popular consumer choices, from ditching plastic straws to using an electric vehicle instead of a gas-guzzler, have some environmental benefits — they don’t put a dent in global emissions. Meanwhile, carbon pollution is approaching frightening levels: According to an influential report published in October, the world could experience dangerous warming as early as 2030 if we don’t rapidly cut emissions.
And yet, President Trump has reversed course on a lot of US climate policies. His administration has repealed the Clean Power Plan designed to curb pollution from coal plants, gutted stricter climate standards for cars and trucks and, just this month, signed executive orders aimed to streamline the development of new fossil fuel projects. Trump also pledged to withdraw the US from the Paris climate agreement, slowing momentum for global action.
The one-two punch of witnessing coral reef carnage and then seeing Trump get elected sent Cobb spiraling into depression. She decided to try engaging with climate action on a personal level, focusing on changing things within her control, such as how she got to work and what she ate, and found a new sense of hope and energy along the way. “It became a daily part of my self-care,” Cobb said.
But talking about her transformation on social media sparked a backlash. “I brought the haters out,” Cobb said.
She has been accused of virtue signaling, and touting a lifestyle that some say is only attainable for the rich. Cobb said she’s not out to shame or judge anyone — instead, she’s trying to show that living a climate-friendly life doesn’t have to be a sacrifice.
As scientists have debated these issues, outsiders have piled on. Climate skeptics have repeatedly called out scientists and activists for their carbon-intensive lives.
For these people, Schmidt of NASA has no patience. “People who use the personal choices of climate scientists as some kind of excuse for not understanding science or refusing to accept science, those are not good-faith arguments, and we shouldn’t really entertain them,” Schmidt said.
Peter Kalmus’s journey down the path of a carbon-limited life started years before Trump’s presidency, back in 2006. He was a graduate student in astrophysics at Columbia University at the time, and a new father. One of the department’s weekly talks featured then-NASA climate scientist James Hansen, and his presentation had Kalmus on the edge of his seat. In the years since, he switched careers to focus on climate change, cut meat from his diet, and gave up flying. He shares his passion with his two sons, 10 and 12, who regularly strike before school on Friday to spread awareness about climate change.
Similar to Cobb, upending his lifestyle was a way for him to find meaning and hope in the face of a terrifying future.
“I’m basically freaking out about carbon emissions,” he said. “If I feel like, This is so urgent and I can’t even reduce, I would probably feel pretty hopeless.”
And more than many of his peers, Kalmus sees individual action as instrumental in bringing about larger change. “You can’t have systematic change unless a whole bunch of individuals are essentially voting for it and voting for it with their actions,” he said.
T. Jane Zelikova, an ecologist at the University of Wyoming, said she’s struggled with what to do. ”Climate change is a collective problem,” Zelikova said. “I think putting the onus of climate change solutions on climate scientists — it doesn’t seem fair. But I also realize we have to lead by example.”
Schmidt is fine with people changing their lives because it’s fulfilling. But he doesn’t want the public to get the impression that the only way to save the planet is by abstaining from certain products or not traveling. “I don’t think that is where we want to end up,” Schmidt said.
His philosophy is: “Individual actions are not really the solution, but there’s no reason that you should unnecessarily pollute the atmosphere.”
Neither Schmidt nor Zelikova have given up flying entirely, but they have tried to cut back by combining trips or using virtual conferencing software. Schmidt became a vegetarian, driven both by animal welfare and climate concerns, and Zelikova aims to only buy meat from ranchers with sustainable grazing practices.
Zelikova said she is “really lucky” to have a good-paying job and live in a place that makes such choices possible.
Zelikova has also mulled one of the biggest decisions of all: whether to have kids. Adding to the more common concerns, such as financial security, Zelikova told BuzzFeed News that, in the wake of increasingly catastrophic predictions from climate models, she and her partner have talked about “whether it’s responsible to bring new kids into the world or whether we should adopt.” They haven’t decided yet.
The top actions you can take to cut your own emissions, in order of impact, include having one fewer child (equaling, for someone in a rich country, an estimated 58.6 tons of carbon dioxide equivalent per year), living car-free (about 2.4 tons per year), avoiding air travel (about 1.6 tons per round-trip transatlantic flight), and eating a plant-based diet (roughly 0.8 tons per year), according to a 2017 study in the journal Environment Research Letters.
The study authors also looked at what recommendations were being shared in textbooks, government material, and other sources. They found the biggest actions, mentioned above, were often omitted, whereas moderate- and low-impact choices — like recycling, buying energy-efficient products, and taking public transportation — were featured. For example, the Environmental Protection Agency’s “What You Can Do” website includes a “green vehicle guide” and “fuel economy guide” but doesn’t suggest ditching cars altogether.
Climate scientist Katharine Hayhoe of Texas Tech University regularly engages with the public about climate change. She gave a TED Talk and created a YouTube series. Over and over again, she’s been asked the same question: What can I do about climate change?
This has led her down a multiyear journey of experimentation, giving up certain things and seeing how it felt. Over the past decade, she’s invested in solar panels for her home, bought an electric vehicle, and switched from a dryer to a drying rack. Increasingly, she’s been giving virtual talks to cut down on travel.
Hayhoe’s biggest climate impact, she said, is not cutting her own emissions or serving as a model for others on this front. It’s simply talking to as many people as possible about the perils of climate change.
“The most important thing I’ve done is restructure my life to tell as many people in as efficient and effective ways as I can,” Hayhoe said. “It is real. It is us. It is serious and there are solutions if we act now.” ●

ALISA GANIEVA’S APPEARANCE in the world of Russian literature took everyone by surprise, in the literal sense. A critic by training, she published her first work of fiction, the novella Salam, Dalgat! (Salam tebe, Dalgat!), when she was 25, under a male pseudonym; when the novella received the Debut Prize in 2009, Ganieva outed herself as a woman at the awards ceremony. Two novels written under her own name followed, enjoying similar critical success: The Mountain and the Wall (Prazdnichnaia gora, 2012) was longlisted for Russia’s National Bestseller award, while Bride and Groom (Zhenikh i nevesta, 2015) made the shortlist for the Russian Booker. What sets Ganieva apart from most other contemporary Russian writers has to do with what being a “Russian writer” actually means. Her background is culturally and linguistically hybrid. She was born in Moscow but is ethnically Avar, the Avars being the largest ethnic group in Dagestan, a Muslim-majority republic of the Russian Federation located in the North Caucasus. (It neighbors the more sadly famous Chechnya.) Although Ganieva later returned to Moscow, she grew up in Dagestan. As she explains in an interview, her first language was Avar, but she writes in Russian, with which she also grew up, as it is Dagestan’s lingua franca.
This movement between places, cultures, and languages is characteristic of Bride and Groom. Like her previous works, the novel is set in Dagestan, in the small village where Patya and Marat — the bride and the groom — are from and to which they have come back to visit their families. Marat works as a defense lawyer in Moscow, where Patya has just spent a year working in a courthouse copying documents. They are both intimately familiar with village culture and comfortable with Moscow’s modern ways. Intermingling in the novel also occurs on the linguistic level: while Ganieva writes in standard Russian, she injects many words and expressions from Avar and Arabic, making hers a specifically Dagestani Russian variant. In Ganieva’s original texts, these words and expressions are translated into Russian in footnotes, which presents her English-language translator, Carol Apollonio, with the question of how best to handle them in translation. Apollonio opts for two different approaches: in The Mountain and the Wall, she puts these terms in a glossary at the end, whereas in Bride and Groom, possibly because there are fewer of them, she italicizes them to mark their foreignness but leaves them untranslated, asking readers to rely on context for a general understanding of their meaning.
Literature by Dagestani writers is virtually unknown in the West. The press release by Ganieva’s United States publisher, Deep Vellum, notes that The Mountain and the Wall is the first novel by a Dagestani writer to be translated into English (making Bride and Groom the second). Yet even those living in the Russian Federation are poorly versed in writing from Dagestan, having been raised, as was Ganieva herself, on a Russian literary canon overwhelmingly made up of writers of European descent. The rise of a Dagestani author with Dagestani-themed works challenges this hegemony and alters the way the Caucasus, which occupies a prominent place in Russian writing, has been traditionally represented.
As part of its colonial expansion during the 19th century, the Russian Empire sought to bring the region under its control through a series of military campaigns, a conflict that resumed in the late 20th century, as Russia attempted to suppress separatism in Chechnya. Before he became a pacifist and insufferable moralist, the young profligate Leo Tolstoy (1828–1910) went to the Caucasus and joined the army after piling up gambling debts. Several writers were exiled to the remote region for displeasing tsarist authorities — notably Mikhail Lermontov (1814–1841), who fought in the military there. Indeed, the Caucasus as a literary setting is most often associated with Russian Romanticism and Lermontov, its most famous practitioner. His novel A Hero of Our Time (1840), whose Byronic protagonist finds himself stationed in the Caucasus like his creator, serves as a foundational text of the Russian novelistic tradition. This work highlights the way many European Russian authors exoticized the Caucasus as the polar opposite of European Russia: warm, lush, romantic, and full of adventure, yet also a foreign, non-Christian space of savagery and violence.
If the Caucasus has for the most part been written about from the point of view of Russocentric outsiders, Ganieva represents it as an insider focusing on Dagestani people and events, while sending up Russians who have no cultural understanding of the region. In the novel’s opening chapter — the only one set in Moscow — Patya becomes the object of fascination for a group of Russians when she goes to an acquaintance’s dacha for a party. When one of the guests begins describing his time in the Caucasus while serving in the army, she laughs at him — “You must be mixing up the nineteen-nineties with the nineteenth century” — and subsequently decides that it is easier not to argue when he asks whether she has to undergo a “gynecological exam every month” to ensure that she is still a virgin.
Ganieva’s works show a society that is much more nuanced than these Russian stereotypes suggest. Dagestan is a place where tradition vies with modernization. Those with hardline religious views chat up prospective partners on the internet: for example, Timur, a fundamentalist political youth organizer and denier of evolution, insists that he and Patya are meant to marry because they have been corresponding for several months. Crucially, Ganieva depicts a range of characters’ Islamic practices. Patya and Marat are modern secular Muslims. Patya tells Timur, “I don’t pray. That’s not happening,” while Marat refuses to consider marrying a woman who wears a headscarf and throws a proselytizer out of a cafe in which he and Patya are on a date — itself a modern concept. Marat’s friend, Rusik-the-Nail, eccentric by his society’s standards, walks out into the street with a placard declaring, “I am an agnostic,” for which he unsurprisingly suffers immense consequences. While most of the society is religious, there is a definitive split between families like Patya’s and Marat’s, who practice a conventional form of Islam, and those like Timur and his friends, who represent the Wahhabi fundamentalism encroaching on the region, which many of the other characters find abhorrent. This split is embodied in the two warring mosques in the village: the regular “mosque on the avenue” and the extremist one “across the tracks” that radicalizes its attendees. While fundamentalism is spreading — more women are wearing hijabs and there are violent clashes between the mosques — it has not completely taken hold. Ganieva has stated that she sees the tendency toward hardline practices as a problem in the region, and her works capture Dagestan in a moment of flux, the path it will head down still unfinalized.
Moreover, as a woman writer, Ganieva injects a different gender dynamic into the Caucasus narrative. The Russians who wrote about the region were largely men writing about male protagonists; Ganieva’s own Salam, Dalgat! and The Mountain and the Wall also feature male protagonists, with the latter especially depicting women as secondary characters in largely clichéd terms. But she takes a different approach in Bride and Groom, alternating the chapters between Patya’s and Marat’s points of view. Arguably, Patya’s point of view predominates, at least until the very end, since her chapters are in first person, while Marat’s are in third person. As a character, Patya is independent and headstrong, with ideas that conflict with the traditional mores of her society, which brand women sluts for sleeping with their boyfriends, as happens to her friend, and even prohibit them from wearing pants in public. She questions the narrowly domestic roles women are expected to assume in a society obsessed with marriage; as she wryly observes when she goes into town, “A wedding salon on every block […] Weddings, weddings, weddings. As though there was nothing else to do.”
To be sure, this society insists on marriage for men as well as women. Marat comes home to his village because his parents have rented out the banquet hall for his wedding and a bride must be found in short order. His mother personally escorts him to meet the women on the list she has compiled for this purpose. Yet marriage demands affect women’s lives more. While his parents will lose their deposit on the banquet hall if a wife is not found, Marat can return to his job in Moscow. In contrast, Patya’s mother refuses to let her go back to Moscow, insisting that she must stay in the village and find a husband; at 25, she is reminded at every turn that she is “[a] little long in the tooth for a bride.” While she eventually becomes engaged to Marat, she does so on her own terms. Even though everyone strongly encourages her to marry Timur, she rejects him because he treats her like an object, and although her family ultimately agrees with her choice of groom, it initially goes against their wishes. At the same time, Ganieva does not always depict Patya consistently. In the scene of their declaring their love for each other, which occurs toward the end of the novel, Patya’s responses to Marat — for example, she assures him, “Go ahead and tell me. I will understand,” when she clearly doesn’t — seem as though Ganieva is relying on cultural clichés of how women in love should talk to the men they are in love with. (In Apollonio’s translation the scene reads more neutrally than in Russian.)
Patya and Marat’s courtship unfolds against the social and political tensions around them, which form the backbone of the story and ultimately determine its outcome. The central event occupying everyone as the two arrive in the village is the arrest and imprisonment of Khalilbek, a man whose status in the community is nothing short of mythic:
Khalilbek was omnipotent, omnipresent, and more […] He had a finger in every pie and knew the details of the most minor matters; at the same time, he was behind all major shifts in power, missing persons cases, and fateful decisions.
Because of his epic powers, many believe he is “Khidr, a prophet,” a man of God and divine wisdom. At the same time, he is imprisoned on charges of corruption and murder and is directly responsible for the death of Adik, Marat’s half-brother and his father’s illegitimate son, whom Khalilbek ran over in his car several years previously. Although Khalilbek’s highly ambiguous nature is never fully resolved, the surprising reason behind Adik’s murder and Khalilbek’s role in the closing scene of the novel does suggest a particular reading. It is the confluence of external circumstances — Adik’s past actions, the jealousy of Marat’s ex-lover, the unscrupulousness of the local police in their efforts to root out fundamentalism — that ultimately decides the private fates of Patya and Marat, underscoring individuals’ precarious position in a world largely out of their control.
The novel’s ambiguous ending, while not entirely satisfying, works well enough. What works markedly less well is Ganieva’s decision to include an afterword in the English version, whose aim, as she explains, “is to address a quiet but very important subtext of the novel that has to do with Sufism, an esoteric Muslim teaching.” To be sure, Sufism is not a topic with which most of her English-speaking readership will be familiar, and it is understandable why she feels the need to elaborate (although she seems not to have felt this need with her Russian audience, most of whom would be equally unfamiliar with it). Looking back at the novel with this subtext in mind does change one’s perception, including the interpretation of the ending, which is Ganieva’s goal. However, adding an afterword in which an author instructs her readers how to read her novel is decidedly an overreach. This misstep aside, Bride and Groom is an intelligent and interesting read that brings into focus a little-known part of the world while challenging cultural and literary clichés that have clustered around it. The fact that this corrective is the work of a woman author and a woman translator may be coincidental, but it is hardly surprising.
