so somehow it’s the first time I’ve seen your Dogs illustration from May. it’s very very cool and strongly reminds me of AI-generated art — did you use AI to inspire the shapes? or otherwise influence the piece somehow? interested in your process! very cool.
yes! some more directly reference ai images id generated than others lol

Pretty sure people easily spotted the similarities between Courtney's testimonials and plot points that across all of Lily's work.
And people HAVE explained those connections

Secondly,

Not only, was "I can't do Stockholm, I wrote that one" either AI or Edited thanks to the Brittany Collectives powers, but it was an running gag?
counting this ask, i have received six about this post LO made. i wasn't able to answer because work and not having available my computer, but now that we're back in business it's time to take out the evidence. 1. no, LO didn't had that running gag. just no. that was never a thing.
2. so we used AI to generate that one clip. in 2014. full with voice that perfectly imitates LO, including her cadence and tone, and also the visuals that perfectly correspond to her style of editing at that time. that clip that was out and running before any of us made our blogs. that clip that corresponds to a time period in which multiple people, ex fans of LO, can testify to being there when LO still talked proudly about how much she loved writing stockholm. that clip was AI generated. we're just science fiction villains that have travelled through time, generated that clip and put it out there... just to say this reviewer of MLP wrote a fanfic about MLP. sure, that sounds plausible. let's say that is true for that one piece of evidence. what about this entire video in which she talks about writing Ascentia paired up with Twilight Sparkle in Stockholm, while showing the cover of Stockholm, and how nobody called her a Mary Sue?
youtube
did we AI generated this one too? 3. but let's say, to keep this science fiction villain story alive, that we did. we also travelled back in the past and uploaded this onto the internet and brainwashed Sega when she became part of the Brittany hivemind to believe she saw this video first on LO's channel. again, totally plausible! makes total sense if you think about it! alright, so that's what we did. what about the blog posts, some of them still connected to the current account that she's using right now?
Tumblr media
"but that image was manipulated". photoshop exist and we're actually very talented people so that makes sense to think about. but why then when you click on the "lily orchard" of this link it directly takes you to her current blog? did we mess with the tumblr code to make that happen? did we put a spell that makes everyone allucinate that they are reaching her blog when they press on her username and they're actually watching an entirely different person? oh, maybe we installed a brainwashing Brittany original gas in every computer and phone in the world, MK-Ultra style? i have more archives from other blogs, some active, some that are not, all connecting directly to LO one way or another.
the sankaku accounts can't be proven to be hers in quite the same way, unfortunately. but stockholm is and always was her most sincere creation and i say that with all the disgust that it's warranted.

ON THE AI ART THING
i see three main points people are making, which i think are fair: first the supposition that the products of people's labor are being used somewhere in the process of art generation in an unfairly profitable way; second the supposition that the products of the artists' labor are being stolen before they can sell it; third that the other two result in a chain-reaction down the line where nobody's an artist any more because neural networks are adjective-er than humans.
for what its worth the way AIs combine images is just not the way you think AIs combine images. machine learning is complicated. neural networks are complicated. read up on GANs; watch a few Two Minute Papers videos (like this one, which is particularly relevant: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FCf8OA4GPvI). the way they combine im its not forgery (AI are not perfectly replicating your piece and selling it as it is for their own value; at some point it might involve copying/"looking" at it), its not stealing (you still have your art with you), its not even Youtube Poop remixing. generally the hypest way to do neural networks right now is to take a collection of items the AI knows to contain similar concepts and creates an understanding of that shared concept; a good dataset will be big enough to understand all the full variations of that concept, or accurately deduce the rest of the variations, all through the natural inconsistenties that a bunch of pictures of the same thing might produce. an AI knows how to do an oil painting style because it probably knows quite well the actual qualities of an oil painting. it also knows what the sun looks like, how cloth drapes at different weights, how holes in the ceiling of a building might imply shafts of light illuminating on the floor, and other incredible stuff. beats me how it does that, and you likely won't get it either. but the point is the way people are talking about AI on here seems solely informed by imagination.
for unfair and stealing bit, there's something to be said about how certain online communities, websites, people, blogs. etc are naturally private due to obscurity while also being technically completely public; like caves hidden in valleys that take quite a bit of looking to get to and see. in the past we just assumed they would stay hidden: the art on this blog will only be seen by its followers, or people i link the blog to, surely; ill teach you the way to my little cave. unfortunately the internet has been filled with extremely informed and skilled valley-treading and cave-finding robots, and unless you have big ol' signs that say "DO NOT FIND THIS CAVE!" (i remember for forums you could stop scrapers from coming to your website, i think on tumblr there is something like a "do not show in search results" button too), or somehow otherwise avoid their path using strange internet tricks or complete luck, they will totally find your little cave and rummage through it. what i mean to say is this: your art is already part of the publicly available data, and you're in a tough spot to do anything about it. i have no solutions.
the objectionable part is not in this collection of references for analysis, nor in how the AI is usually interpreting what objects are what, but the misuse of the AI to produce things you don't like (which is part of the point i wanted to make in my first post, besides arguing for the artistic integrity of what the AI is doing with its sources). and i see how it seems unfair -- someone smarter and more knowledgeable about art, labor, intellectual property, and value could articulate this more -- that a customer of a neural network could so freely replicate someone else's work with the original stylist having nothing to show for it. it wouldn't be any better if a sufficiently skilled person was requested to draw original pieces in your style. so in that way this is less about AI and more an objection against the violation of someone's intellectual property, if that exists.
for the second point on losing artists, i understand the reasoning as following: nobody wants to be a starving artist, and to avoid that in capitalism one needs money, and if someone is dead set on being an artist (or for some reason can be nothing else) they must sell their art to make money. if no one is going to give them money for art, they will certainly be a starving artist, which we don't want. the conclusion here is, if we want artists (starving, at the very least), we should restrict anything else that makes art which might compete with the artist's. okay, that might work: we could stop having AI make art. but what if, despite our best efforts, we can't fully restrict such a thing? what if AIs are here to stay? more importantly, what if artists are actually already partnering with AI to make art, and you've just been none the wiser? What if you yourself could adapt to new technology and use it to better your own art? The improvement of this tech is, as far as anyone can tell, inevitable. Like any tool, it will be applied in obvious and creative ways. It will displace some people, it will be used by others, and further it will be ignored by the rest.
naturally we would think at least some artists could no longer be paid for what they currently do. if companies can afford a concept artist they likely could better afford a subscription to DALL-E. If their work is no better than AI and they cost more it seems clear they're out. but im simply not jumping to the conclusion that companies specifically will be replacing ALL artists with AI, since most trained artists are in fact better than AI, and come with the human factor. some companies will certainly try the switch to AI for the novelty of it, two or three might succeed, most will probably find out negotiating with an artist or two for long term projects is much easier than talking to the team of computer science geeks to see if the damn art-generating program will churn out something slightly more [quality], more palatable to today's changing tastes -- all that, IF "AI generated images" is even the zeitgeist in whatever hypothetical time period in the future this is happening. maybe by the time the tech is developed people will think handmade stuff is popular and companies will follow suit, with all their logos or whatever being painted on glass panes.
i mean, who are we even talking about, considering artists? the fandom artists definitely aren't disappearing because of neural networks. all those millionaire furry artists simply won't lose business because people are going to Midjourney and entering in "shirtless anthropomorphic tiger, [famous furry artist]-style". people who want oil paintings want some physical oil paintings and usually not a digitally-generated oil painting printed on canvas. people want a human intermediary for basically everything, and if you've ever worked retail with an older customer base you'd know that's true. id certainly prefer human-made art to neural networks if i was gonna spend money (and i apologize to our future robot overlords for such a statement).
so who is really completely losing out here? many artists are, quite frankly, not big enough to get fried. concept artists for triple-AAA shooters might take a hit, i imagine; its decently easy to generate generic cities and alien landscapes with AI. but frankly, artificial intelligence is a tool, and not a scooch-along robot replacing your cubicle in the office. you still need people who know about art, and artists willing to put in the work, for it to produce anything of commercial value. even if it gets so good that the CEO of a business can log on to ARTIFICIAL-INTELLIGENCE-WEBSITE.com and type into the text box "I wuld like to buy a compny logo for $50 please", im sure there will always be more status in having that "human touch" to your designs, and less status in those robo-packs of ugly slightly mismatched placeholders. besides, artists are already using AI to help create their products in the first place; i refer to that Two Minute Papers video again (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FCf8OA4GPvI).
Edit: Considering Two Minute Papers, we do see that VFX artists and simulation scientists are trying to find ways to realistically simulate liquid, gases, fire, etc. with AI. This likely will have consequences for whatever hand-simulated stuff VFX artists have been doing.
your art is publicly available and you really don't have much control over what happens to it. unless little intranets for families and towns and cities and such become more popular, unless you start password protecting websites like forums used to do, your shits getting collected. its not a good reality and im definitely an advocate for internet privacy. for many artists the internet is unfortunately the only place they know how to get their stuff out there. its not a good situation for artists to begin with. the thing is, what's happening with modern AI art generation isn't... really that bad. unless some specific human wants to make it bad. if from this moment on we decide to push for legal-social-whatever punishments for not compensating the artists whom AI was trained on, okay, i guess. companies developing these AI probably have too much startup money anyway and most artists make far too little for the years of wrist pain. but i would say the customers requesting your art style or whatever are certainly at more moral fault, because it almost certainly wouldn't just pop out a given art style unless your prompt guided it to.
i will stand by the fact that the art of modern neural networks is more complicated, less hurtful, and way cooler than ripped off collage nonsense, and it will be exciting and scary to see where we go from an AI winning an art tournament -- for the moment you can be scared if you want, i guess, but if you didn't already lose your job to a guy utilizing a neural network then you're probably already safe. (and you might as well get on the train before you're left behind.)

Hi,
I really admire your work. I have been doing photo manips with Photoshop for some time and would like to get into AI based work. But where to begin? Can you suggest a starting point? Also, is there any AI software out there that will allow me to create different facial expressions from a single image as a source? Thanks very much.
It's hard to know what to recommend so I'll do 2 things - 1. leave this Beginner's Guide Link here, and 2. summarize how I ended up here:
I started with DreamStudio which is more or less the official Stable Diffusion service. It's still a great place get familiar with the various settings, but the nsfw filter will be very frustrating if you're producing curvy content, and they don't have the best photorealism models. It also offers access to their API which means you can use it from within Photoshop, though you'd have to pay for it. (I used to just spam accounts to get endless free access, I did let them know that this was a loophole people were exploiting, afaik they never fixed it). After that I tried out various Colabs - the original demo is worth playing with if you're comfortable tinkering with code a little, as it explains how it works. I used to recommend this virtual notebook to run Stable Diffusion, Unfortunately Google has disallowed using colabs for webUI implementations for free. But you can still pay to use it, or try a different paid cloud service as per the links on that page. Due to the popularity of AI artgen all the free ML services are clamping down on such use.
Finally I treated myself to buying a 2nd hand gaming laptop with 8gb of VRAM, and installed the automatic1111 webui version of Stable Diffusion using this installer, way easier than trying to install Python and CUDA and all the other things needed to make it work.
So that's the short version of how I ended up here, without going into detail about model merging, what settings to use and other important stuff. Maybe I better walk it back a little - Stable Diffusion is the core program that generates AI art, it runs the backend of almost all the apps and sites available. There's different interfaces for getting inputs and outputs to the core program, the webUIs let you control Stable Diffusion via your browser, and the most popular one is stable-diffusion-webui which is maintained by automatic1111 on github. Other programs such as Easy Diffusion use their own app to control the SD backend. Part of the reason for the auto1111 webui's popularity is the wide range of extensions it supports, such as a plugin for controlling it from within editors such as Photoshop, GIMP, Krita and even PhotoPea iirc.
Aside from Stable Diffusion, Midjourney is still the best AI artgen system even though the interface is discord based, unfortunately it filters inputs and outputs strictly so it's of limited use to people creating erotic art. I haven't tried Bing, and I don't use Photoshop so I haven't tested their Generative Fill tools, my understanding is that it's their in-house implementation of Stable Diffusion, idk how limited it is for erotic content but I assume it's an excellent tool otherwise.
Because I mess around with computers a lot I've sort of worked it out as I go and don't know which how-to guides to recommend but there's a lot of good youtube guides out there and that first link isn't too bad. Stable Diffusion has vast untapped potential for photo manip artists especially with inpainting models, but that's a whole other thing. Only reason I haven't gotten into that is I'm no longer comfortable editing and sharing people's pics without permission, but 20yo me probably wouldn't have left the house if I had this to play around with back in the day. As for varied facial expressions from a single source, I think that's something that can be done but I don't know how to do it myself.
Hope some of this makes some sense. It's my way of saying IDK where to start, it really depends on what hardware you have available and how comfortable you are with stuff like command lines and code, but wherever you're starting from - there's options that will work for you.

Star Wars: from The Force to R2D2, does the science hold up?
by Carsten Welsch
Tumblr media
Nope, it’s not controlled by The Force. Author provided
Star Wars: The Rise Of Skywalker, the final film in the epic Star Wars series, hit the big screens on December 19. Science fiction in general – and Star Wars in particular – is a hugely popular genre, much because of the titillating possibility that the mind-blowing technology we see on screen could one day work.
But what is science and what is fiction in Star Wars? Could the technology be ahead of actual science?
The Force(s)
The Force is at the heart of the Star Wars universe. It “gives the Jedi his powers. It’s an energy field created by all living things. It surrounds us, it penetrates us, it binds the galaxy together” as Obi Wan Kenobi once explained to Luke Skywalker. But is there any science to back this up?
Our current understanding is that there are four fundamental forces in the universe: the electromagnetic force, the gravitational force and two different forces that control the atomic nucleus and its particles.
But you need different theories of physics to describe these forces. Quantum mechanics, which explains the nuclear forces, is notoriously incompatible with general relativity, which describes gravity. It is the holy grail of physics to try to combine these theories and unify all the forces into one “The Force”.
Science does however support the idea of an energy field that “surrounds everything”. In fact, if you take out all the stuff in the universe – the galaxies, planets and people – you are left with an exotic kind of energy in empty space itself. Curiously, this kind of energy of nothingness can actually give rise to forces, as implied in Star Wars. That said, its effect is tiny and it certainly can’t give anyone special powers.
To explore the forces of the universe, physicists use accelerators to create and study particles associated with forces that – in some cases – have not been produced since the Big Bang itself. One example was the Higgs Boson that was discovered in 2012 by the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) at CERN in Switzerland.
Tumblr media
A lot of science in Star Wars doesn’t hold up. Author provided
The LHC is world’s largest and highest energy accelerator and will soon receive an upgrade, further increasing its discovery potential.
Light sabres
Light sabres are one of the most famous weapon in film history. They are used by the Jedi and Sith and require knowledge of the Force so they can be controlled. Unfortunately, a real-world light sabre cannot currently be manufactured. One problem is that there is no way to make light emanate from a source and stop after only a metre – light will go on to infinity unless it hits something. Also, two intense light beams would cross each other.
However, the name “light sabre” could be misleading. There is a way to make something similar to this awesome weapon using plasma – a fourth state of matter consisting of highly charged particles. The blade could be made of plasma and be confined with an electromagnetic magnetic field. Theoretically, such a plasma sabre should be able to do many of the things the light sabres in Star Wars do. They may be more deadly though.
We are still far from having such a technology available though. One much less glamorous use of plasmas is to melt and weld metal. There are more exciting innovations using high-energy plasmas in the works though. For example, plasmas are now used to propel charged particles to high velocities over extremely short distances. This is helping scientists to design and build ever more compact particle accelerators, potentially up to 1,000 times smaller – and considerably less expensive – than current radiofrequency-based accelerators such as the LHC.
In this approach, a high intensity laser or particle beam is directed through a plasma medium. This creates a wake in the plasma, very much like the wake created by a boat running at speed along a river or lake. This allows the creation of a strong electric field which can be used for accelerating a beam of charged particles that is injected into this wake at the right time.
The hope is that plasma accelerators will pave the way for compact facilities being used for anything from imaging ultra-fast phenomena to testing innovative materials for industry.
Proton torpedoes
In the very first Star Wars movie, Luke Skywalker uses “proton torpedoes” to destroy the Death Star – the giant space station that obliterates planets. According to the Star Wars canon, these are a type of explosive warhead which releases clouds of high-energy proton particles (protons make up the atomic nucleus with neutrons). In Star Wars, these weapons are exceptionally manoeuvrable so they can be used against a variety of targets. This isn’t the case for actual torpedoes though.
More than 40 years on, protons are instead used in a different kind of war – that against cancer. Proton beams can penetrate tissue for a specific distance determined by their energy. They can deposit most of this energy at a specific location, destroying a target tumour but sparing healthy tissue. This is becoming a rapidly developing method of cancer treatment.
To further improve the technology, particle accelerator and clinical experts have been exploring ways to better control proton beams through online beam monitoring. Among others, instruments originally developed for the LHC are used to measure the detailed properties of the treatment beam without touching it. This helps target tumours with more precision and also helps reduce machine set-up times, allowing the treatment of more patients.
Droids
While we cannot currently build droids such as R2D2 or C3PO, research into Big Data Science, machine learning and artificial intelligence brings these technologies ever closer. So far, AI can already sort things, play games, diagnose disease and predict scientific discoveries. But it is still a long way from being able from developing general intelligence – and it is notoriously bad at conversation.
As the voiceover of Luke Skywalker says in the latest film trailer: “We’ve passed on all we know.” And that’s exactly what I and other researchers are trying to do. So let’s hope this article can inspire some readers who dream about what science could achieve in the next 40 years to become the next generation of scientists.

26 Mar 2021: Amazon: cooler but not fresher. Facebook’s habit. NFTs.
Hello, this is the Co-op Digital newsletter. Thank you for reading - send ideas and feedback to @rod on Twitter. Please tell a friend about it!
Tumblr media
[Image: part - about 3.5m worth - of Beeple’s Everydays: the first 5000 days]
Amazon: cooler but not fresher
“I asked [two young employees] if they liked working at Amazon Fresh and they both said, “Yes.” I followed up with, “Beats working at a supermarket?” and they both said, “Yes.” It’s a problem that it’s not cool to work in a supermarket.”
That’s a US supermarket executive visiting an Amazon Fresh store in Chicago. Also:
“I was amazed that the cart weighs the produce and snaps a picture of each item. [...]
“I couldn’t find a ripe avocado and the bananas looked chilled. [...] The stores don’t seem to have a personal touch, especially if you need something special. I don’t think it will be a weekly destination for me, but I’m sure it will be for some people.”
Elsewhere in grocery and retail:
Asda equal pay: when seeking equal pay, lower-paid shop staff, who are mostly women, have won the right to compare themselves with higher paid warehouse workers, who are mostly men.
John Lewis will permanently close eight more shops - most were already struggling before the pandemic.
Big investors shun Deliveroo[’s IPO] over workers' rights.
43% of weekly shoppers experience spoilage, damage or theft of delivered grocery - HomeValet has a “smart box” take on grocery delivery packaging that fixes those problems.
Facebook’s habit
Facebook’s AI algorithms gave it an insatiable habit for lies and hate speech. Now the man who built them can't fix the problem. Good long read on Facebook’s efforts to understand the system it had created.
“A former Facebook AI researcher who joined in 2018 says he and his team conducted “study after study” confirming the same basic idea: models that maximize engagement increase polarization”
Needless to say, there are competing views within FB about what “fairness” should mean, particularly in relation to politics. And unfortunately *testing* for fairness remains a nice-to-have:
“But testing algorithms for fairness is still largely optional at Facebook. None of the teams that work directly on Facebook’s news feed, ad service, or other products are required to do it. Pay incentives are still tied to engagement and growth metrics. And while there are guidelines about which fairness definition to use in any given situation, they aren’t enforced.”
It ends on this despondent note:
“Certainly he couldn’t believe that algorithms had done absolutely nothing to change the nature of these issues, I said.
“I don’t know,” he said with a halting stutter. Then he repeated, with more conviction: “That’s my honest answer. Honest to God. I don’t know.””
Political platforms
Bad news at the newsletter platforms. Mailchimp employees on unequal working conditions that led to women and people of colour quitting jobs. And Substack writers are mad at Substack over advances given against future revenue shares to writers who may have controversial or discriminatory opinions (although tbh, this is what all publishing companies do: offer authors with varying views advances on future royalty revenues).
It is getting harder for all platforms to remain neutral. Partly this is because neutrality is impossible: as platforms (and tech companies generally) get bigger, they wield more power. And partly it is because people actually want the platforms they use to take political, ethical and value positions.
Related: Very interesting read on moderation: whether each layer in the infrastructure stack should moderate its own layer or moderate the layers above it. It has interviews with leaders at Stripe, Microsoft, Google Cloud and Cloudflare.
NFTs, “non-fungible tokens” and art
Last week, a digital image by artist Beeple sold for 69 million US dollars. It’s a jpeg image by an artist called Beeple, and the auction house Christie’s handled the sale. To be more accurate, it wasn’t the image that sold for $69m, but a digital file on the blockchain that references the original image, although of course the very idea of “original” is complicated by digital files anyway (look, is this the original, on the Christie’s website?!). OK, let’s do NFT questions:
What is an NFT? A “non-fungible token” is a digital file that is put on some kind of blockchain so that it behaves less like a digital thing (infinitely and easily copyable and shareable) and more like a physical thing (not easily copyable and shareable).
Hold on, what, “non-fungible”? Money is fungible: it doesn’t matter whether you have this £10 note or that one, they’re both worth £10. “Non-fungible” is the opposite: only you have this unique thing, like a painting.
Is an NFT art? Everything can be art. The question is always whether it is good art, and the easiest way to know is to look at a lot of art.
Are NFTs good? Sometimes. They let true fans express their fandom by buying and collecting things. They make some money for artists, although most aren’t going to make 69m. They let artists benefit from the secondary market - that’s a good but occasionally sweary piece.
Are NFTs bad? Often. They’re hard to understand. When they use proof-of-work blockchains - eg Ethereum as of mid March 2021 - they are profoundly wasteful of energy. They are prone to scams because while the blockchain guarantees the chain of ownership of a digital file, it doesn’t do the same for the artwork the digital file points at, so there are some instances of artists being NFTised without permission. Though this may be more a characteristic of scammers than of NFTs. Some people speculate that NFTs are being used as marketing for cryptocurrencies.
How can NFTs be both good and bad? NFTs - and cryptocurrencies more generally - are a mirror: you see what you want to see. The excitement of being part of something new. The wish to make the world afresh. Taking apart industries that are inefficient. The white heat of investing in things that go to the moon. A way to socially signal others. The virus amplifying wealth inequalities. The underlying trend to monetise everything. Pointless showing off. Buying a file that merely points at some art. A scam.
Can you get off the fence, newsletter? OK, NFTs are on balance, bad. NFTs are everything you don’t understand about art multiplied by everything you don’t understand about technology multiplied by everything you don’t understand about money. And, right now, most of them are bad for the environment.
Who’s Beeple again? Beeple is an artist. The newsletter featured a Beeple image in August 2020. Co-op Members will be pleased to hear that the newsletter didn’t pay him $69m for it.
In other countries
A changing nation: how Scotland will thrive in a digital world - “this strategy sets out the measures which will ensure that Scotland will fulfil its potential in a constantly evolving digital world”.
Data, surveillance and how India is creating platforms to give people more control over how information about them is used (Related?: Two UK broadband ISPs trial new internet snooping system with UK Home Office.)
Spain to launch trial of four-day working week - “government agrees to proposal from leftwing party Más País allowing companies to test reduced hours”.
Various things
Self-driving startup Voyage bought by Cruise, which is owned by GM and Honda. Voyage was interesting because it focussed on a taxi service in retirement communities, and has designed an interior for Covid safety.
Is test and trace really the most wasteful public spending programme ever? Or have there, in fact, been larger squanderings of taxpayers’ money in the past?
'Right to repair' law to come in this summer. Manufacturers will need to make spare parts for appliances available to consumers - will this apply to mobile phones and other devices which have become decreasingly repairable as they became smaller and more complex?
A petition to Amazon: lower the number of parcels we have to deliver.
Black tech employees rebel against diversity theater.
I have one of the most advanced prosthetic arms in the world - and I hate it.

While there is no substitute for good-old-fashioned-experimentation when it comes to shooting photos, sometimes you want to grab your camera and take a decent picture. But maybe you want to live out your Casey Neistat dreams of being the next Youtube Vlog sensation. Heck, maybe you'd like to use a camera that doesn’t come with a monthly service plan or double as a handheld Bejeweled Blitz machine.
youtube
If only there were an entry-level camera that could help you solve those problems without costing a small fortune. If only a camera could take great photos without generating snotty looks from mustachioed hipsters effortlessly wielding their $8,000 Leicas. Well, folks, allow me to introduce you to the Canon EOS M50 Mk II.
The EOS M50 Mk II is the new 24.1-megapixel, mirrorless camera that improves upon the M50 Mk I from 2018. It uses the DIGIC 8 processor, designed to improve image quality even at higher ISO speeds. The EOS M50 Mk II can shoot 4K—more on that in a moment—at 24 frames per second (FPS); and shoot 1080P up to 60 FPS. The maximum video image size is 3840 x 2160.
Tumblr media
Canon considers this its "entry-level" offering, and I am inclined to agree. But, with the entry-level price point and consumer in mind, that means the camera offers several features that make it easy for the average person to use. I think that's one of the EOS M50 Mk II's biggest strengths.
What’s in the Box?

The Canon M50 Mk II is the second iteration of the previous Canon M50 mirrorless camera staple in the YouTube vlogging world. A search on YouTube yields an almost endless supply of M50 videos. Seriously, everyone has this camera.
The wide use means there's also an abundance of accessories available for the M50 Mark II, including lenses, cages, speed-boosters, USB power adapters, 110v A/C plug-in power supplies, and much more.
Tumblr media
So, what makes the EOS M50 Mk II better than the original? And why should you fork over an additional $50 bucks on top of the price of the original M50 for the standard Mk II body-and-kit-lens package? And what about all that negative press?! Isn’t the M50 Mk II just a software update to the original M50?
Yes. Essentially the hardware for the M50 Mk II is the same as the original M50. And Yes, the Mk II is essentially just a software update from the original. Don’t listen to the haters, though. You should still buy the Mk II unless you're only planning on taking photos.
Related: Common Camera Lenses and When to Use Them
But why? Well, mostly because I think it adds $50 worth of additional features that you’re not going to get if you decide to buy the original.
Features like autofocus improvements, and a clean HDMI out, which means that you can plug the M50 MK II into a desktop monitor to gaze into your own pretty face while filming for your adoring YouTube fanbase, or record to an external device.
Tumblr media
There’s also better battery life. That means about 1/3 more photos than the original M50, not to mention more video footage. And the Mk II offers improvements to autofocus, as well as a new feature—eye-tracking focus. Plus, you can use autofocus while the AI Servo AF is active—a feature that makes motion capture simple and is absent from the original M50.
Is the EOS M50 Mk II an Upgrade?
If you’re going to make a decently large purchase for a camera that is around $700, then you want the absolute maximum of features packed into whatever you buy. While the original M50 is still a great camera, it’s not the best for vlogging, and the camera’s anemic battery life has been flagged more than once. Of course, you could always spend a little extra and buy another battery if you like. That’s a great way to go as well. Or you could buy the Mk II.
Then there's the autofocus. Canon is famous for its dual pixel autofocus. I won’t get into the jargon-y specifics because I don’t like to bore my readers, but what you need to know is this: Canon's dual pixel autofocus is awesome.
youtube
It’s great for videos and normal photography alike. It’s also fast. Eye-controlled focus (eye-tracking) adds to the dual pixel autofocus by accentuating the subject’s eyes while shooting.
It’s generally accepted that if you want to take good portraits, then you should focus—no pun—on the eyes of your subject. The eye-tracking focus feature makes it easy to do just that.
Tumblr media
In addition to the improvements in autofocus, Canon added a vertical video shooting mode designed for your favorite photo and video-based social media platforms. The company has added wireless YouTube streaming (though YouTube restrictions mean you'll need over 1,000 subscribers), and you get that clean HDMI out so that if you’re streaming via the HDMI port, you don’t have to stare at the on-camera settings.

This on-camera info display was a huge gripe for a lot of folks with the original EOS M50. With that model, whenever you connected an external display, there was no way to turn off the busy informational display settings. The Mk II changes that.
Tumblr media
While we’re on the subject of minor gripes with the M50 Mark I, let’s talk about a feature that the Mark II has that the Mark I didn't. The flip-out screen record button.
That means you can now reach over and tap the on-screen button to start your video while you can still see yourself in the frame. The new on-screen record button is a little thing, but it’s something that the vlogging crowd and I certainly appreciate.
The M50 Mark II also makes it quick to get up and running. Charge the battery, pop on the lens, insert a memory card and get shooting. Additionally, for all of you colorists, the Mk II can shoot in a mostly flat color profile with a little software tweaking. But, I should note that it won't shoot LOG.
Tumblr media
Did I mention that the M50 Mk II can be used with Zoom and OBS or the Canon EOS Webcam Utility as a webcam? It can, and it is also fabulous for this purpose as long as you have enough battery life to support it.
Personally, I bought an adapter that allows me to plug the camera into an AC cable and plug that cable into the wall. I love it. Every time I use the M50 Mk II as a webcam, I get bombarded with questions about my setup.
For the best use of this feature, I'd recommend you look into the 22mm f2.0 lens that Canon offers for the EF-M mount cameras. This lens gives you a wider shot and a larger aperture than the 15-45mm kit lens that the M50 ships with.

Ease of Use
Arguably the biggest benefit of the Mark II is how easy it is to pick up and use. Unfortunately, the kit lens isn’t the sharpest, and the f/3.5 aperture doesn’t lend itself to the type of creamy bokeh that you’re used to seeing in professional portrait photography. Still, for amateur photographers looking to get their feet wet, this is a great package.
Tumblr media
For point-and-shoot photography, the 15-45mm kit lens is more than enough to make your photos pop. Though, you should know that low-light settings are going to require increased ISO. Past 400 things start to get a little grainy, but most photos don’t really suffer until you’re around the 800+ mark.
The one thing the 15-45mm kit lens is excellent at is vlog content creation. Paired with a small on-camera shotgun mic and a gimbal or GorillaPod, this setup is a vlogging beast. It’s no wonder so many YouTubers—some with several hundred thousand followers—use their EOS M50 as their primary run-and-gun rig.
Tumblr media
While the Canon’s mic preamp is slightly lacking, using this setup with both the Rode VideoMicro and the Takstar Sgc-598 provided plenty of decent quality audio capture. A little normalization and compression in post were all it took to get decent quality sound.

Is the M50 Mk II Durable?
It is, and I want to take a moment to focus on its durability. Now I admit, I am not the most careful person when it comes to my equipment. That’s why, when I managed to knock over my tripod not once but twice, with the M50 Mk II on top of it, I almost wound up on blood pressure meds.
Both times I thought I was going to scoop up a camera with some extreme damage. Maybe a broken viewfinder or a smashed touch screen.
Tumblr media
Well, I am happy to report that my Canon M50 Mk II doesn’t have a scratch on it. The lenses aren’t cracked or damaged, and the display is clear and sharp. The body of the camera looks like it was just taken out of the box.
There are really only two possibilities for why this is: either I’m lucky (and I certainly need to be more careful with my equipment) or, maybe the M50 Mk II is a pretty durable unit for even the most buttery of fingers.
What's Not to Love About the M50 Mk II?
After a few weeks using the M50 MK II, I can honestly say I have only a couple of complaints. First is the cropped image in 4K. While this camera is touted as a 4K camera and perfectly capable of recording in 4K, the sensor will dump a large portion of its field of view. This is an additional 1.6x crop over the APS-C crop of 1.6x (2.56x total). Also, while in the 4K mode, you lose Canon’s delicious dual pixel autofocus.
Tumblr media
This isn’t really a problem for me, as I don’t like shooting in 4K anyway. Even when I am creating content, I prefer to shoot at 24 FPS in 1080p full HD. Footage shot at 24 FPS has that cinematic look that I adore, and I can use the autofocus to make sure all of my shots are effortlessly tack sharp.
Second, on this list is the Canon iOS app. I hate it. It’s buggy, it’s clunky, it crashes often, and it constantly makes me reset the Wi-Fi settings of the camera to use my phone as a wireless display. The app drives me absolutely insane, and if any Canon app developers are reading—shame on you.
Tumblr media
Last on the list is the digital viewfinder. While it works well as a viewfinder, the sensor next to the viewfinder might give me an aneurysm. Whenever I am using the camera for Zoom meetings, I find the sensor will shut off the external display if it is near a reflective surface—namely, the watercolor painting hanging above my desk. Fortunately, this sensor can be disabled in the menu for the M50 Mk II.
Should You Buy the Canon EOS M50 Mk II?
I think you know the answer to this question by now. If you don’t, then get your credit card out; it’s time to do some camera buying. The original M50 was a great all-around camera. The Mark II adds several improvements aimed at content creators and vloggers. If you fit that description, and you can’t afford to spend $3,000 to improve your smartphone shots, then the M50 MK II is a great choice.
Tumblr media
If you are looking to start a YouTube channel, then the M50 Mk II has enough features to keep you busy for a while. You might eventually outgrow it, though some YouTubers continue with the M50 well into the six-figure subscriber counts.
If you need a camera that will allow you to level up your photographs, this is the camera to buy. And while you’re at it, think about upgrading from the kit lens to the Canon 32mm F1.4. It’s how I get most of my product photography shots. Finally, if you need a small and lightweight camera for taking on the road or for street photography, the M50 Mark II isn’t cumbersome and doesn’t draw a lot of attention.
On the other hand, if you’re a die-hard camera enthusiast who breathes shutter speeds, or if you can spot the difference between a nifty 50 and a 35mm at 300 yards, then you’re better off buying something a little more high-end. Additionally, if the thought of auto-anything makes you shudder (pun intended), then save up for a while and buy a Sony A7s III. You’ll be much happier.
Final Focus on the EOS M50 Mark II
Overall, the M50 Mk II is a delightful starter camera. Canon makes it easy for a total beginner to pick up the unit and get some great photos off the rip. That’s really what makes it excellent. It has a diverse range of functions for both budding photogs and experienced users alike. Unfortunately, it won’t compete with some of the more expensive models, but for regular people who want a camera that makes their photos look great without much effort, you can’t go wrong with the EOS M50 Mk II.
Ignore the crowd that says this camera is “disappointing.” It’s not. It just has a specific purpose, and what it is designed to do—namely, be an entry-level vlogging camera with excellent photo capability—it does well.
Though the M50 Mark II might not make you a YouTube star, it will help you get started.

‘Frankenstein’s Monster:’ Images of Sexual Abuse Are Fueling Algorithmic Porn
Content warning: This article includes firsthand accounts of sexual abuse.
A collection of thousands of photographs of naked women that is being used to create machine learning-generated porn includes images from porn production companies that have been accused of lying to and coercing women to have sex on camera.
The dataset, which is circulating in deepfake porn creation communities online, includes images scraped from Czech Casting, a porn production company in the Czech Republic that police have accused of human trafficking and rape, as well as still images from videos produced by Girls Do Porn, which was ordered to pay almost $13 million to 22 women who appeared in its videos, and whose founder is currently a fugitive on the FBI's most wanted list.
Much like thispersondoesnotexist.com, which uses a machine learning algorithm and thousands of pictures of human faces to produce photorealistic images of people who don't exist, the dataset is being used to generate photorealistic images of nude women who aren’t real and don't look exactly like any one person. One person using the dataset is creating what he describes as "a Harem of millions of actresses" that can be inserted into deepfake porn, while another is using the dataset to create what he describes as "porn generated entirely by AI."
Motherboard has downloaded and viewed the dataset containing images from Czech Casting and Girls Do Porn, as well as several others being used to create machine learning-generated porn.
The people who anonymously use these datasets say that since the final algorithmically-generated images they create technically aren't of real people, they don't harm anyone. In fact, they argue that their creations are a step towards a future where porn will not require human porn performers at all. But legal experts, technologists, and women who are included in the datasets described these creations as uniquely dehumanizing.
Motherboard has written extensively about how deepfakes and internet platforms' inability to sufficently curtail the spread of nonconsensual pornography upends the lives of and continually traumatizes women. This new form of machine learning-generated porn and the datasets it relies on introduces a new form of abuse, where the worst moments of some women's lives, captured on camera, are preserved, decontextualized, and spread online in service of creating porn whose makers claim to feature people who don't actually exist.
Honza Červenka, a lawyer at McAllister Olivarius law firm who specializes in revenge porn and technology, is originally from the Czech Republic and has been following the case of Czech Casting, which is owned by Netlook, the country’s largest porn company. He told Motherboard that the idea that images are less harmful because they're run through an algorithm and "anonymized" is a red herring.
"It's mad science really, and completely and utterly re-victimizing to the victims of the Czech Casting perpetrators," he said.
"It feels unfair, it feels like my freedom is being taken away," Jane, a woman who said she was coerced into shooting a scene for Czech Casting, told Motherboard.
The casting couch trap
Jane, who asked to remain pseudonymous to speak about a traumatizing incident, remembers her hands shaking as she read over a contract for Czech Casting. She was there to support her friend, who needed money for rent. They'd answered an advertisement for a modeling gig, and decided to go together. They'd both just turned 18. They didn't know what kind of modeling it was; the ad was vague about details. Someone picked them up at a metro stop and took them to a house on the outskirts of Prague.
(In an interview with Czech bodybuilder Antonin Hodan posted to YouTube, a male performer in Czech Casting videos named Alekos Begaltsis admitted that the women who show up for shoots sometimes don't know what they're in for because of deceptive advertising.
"The girls get here through agencies as well with the help of private agents or through friends, anyone can recommend," Begaltsis said. "We can't control every piece of information in the advertising. It can happen that a girl gets here thinking she'll do an underwear photoshoot. Which sucks because we are powerless in these situations. We are trying to push them to write the truth [in the ads]. Unfortunately it's not always the case. But once she gets here, we inform her about everything.")
Once at the studio, a woman at the reception desk took Jane's ID.
"We sat in a waiting room and got up to leave two or three times, but someone would always come up and tell us to stay, to not be afraid," she said. "We were scared to leave so we stayed."
A woman called them one by one into a room with a white sofa where the filming would take place, and handed them a contract saying the videos wouldn't be accessible to anyone in the Czech Republic. This part of the arrangement is similar to the lie Girls Do Porn told women about how their videos were only going to be distributed to "collectors" in New Zealand. In reality, Girls Do Porn videos were published and sold in the U.S. and promoted on Pornhub.
Czech Casting does indeed block users trying to access it from the Czech Republic, Motherboard confirmed by trying to access the site using a virtual private network. But people within the country can also easily circumvent the block using a VPN, which is free and easy to set up. Additionally, as women who accused Czech Casting of wrongdoing have said, their families and friends quickly discovered their videos, which were reposted to popular free tube sites, where sometimes their real names were doxed.
"Weeks later I started getting messages…These were mostly from men saying how beautiful I was and if they could have sex with me," Jane said. "I got so many of these messages and keep getting them. I even changed my Facebook name because of this."
After she signed the contract, a man came in and asked her if she was a virgin. She said that she felt like she had no way out, and that she couldn't leave without her ID.
"After I said yes, he took the camera and told me to get naked," Jane said. "I was told they were going to film something soft. . .I was scared to speak out."
Jane said they put the money into her hands as she was leaving. She wasn't given a copy of the contract she signed, or any proof that she'd been there at all.
"My friend found the room we were in on a porn site," Jane said. "I realised this was a massive fuck-up. I kept thinking we should have left even if it means not having our IDs on us."
In another Czech Casting video, a woman, who Motherboard was able to confirm is included in the dataset, starts crying while having sex and asks the man to stop. The man stops, and the camera zooms in to show that she is bleeding. He hands her a towel and tells her to clean up the blood.
Jane's story about Czech Casting isn't unique. Multiple women have accused Czech Casting of coercing them into having sex on camera. Czech police have charged nine people involved with Netlook, the company behind Czech Casting, of human trafficking and rape. Daisy Lee, a woman who went on to a career in porn after her Czech Casting scene and who is now friendly with Begaltsis, said the site has ruined lives.
"I was 18 and didn't know what I was getting myself into. Most girls do not. The majority of them stay, but some leave. It ruins many lives," Lee told Motherboard.
In a statement published in July by the adult entertainment news site Xbiz, Netlook denied the accusations and said it is cooperating with the police. Netlook did not respond to Motherboard's request for comment.
GeneratedPorn
In September, four years after Jane shot her scene for Czech Casting, a PhD student opened a new forum to show off his latest personal AI project: algorithmically-generated porn.
The person making these videos goes by the username "GeneratedPorn," and named the r/GeneratedPorn subreddit to post about the technology (we'll refer to this user as "GP" in this story). He said he started the project because he wanted to improve his machine learning skills. Like some of the earliest deepfakes that were posted online in 2017, what he shared were glitchy, spasming facsimiles of the images they're trained on: thousands of porn videos and images. Unlike much deepfake porn, the images GP is producing wouldn't fool anyone into thinking they are real porn. The final result barely looks human, let alone like a specific person.
Do you have experience with “casting couch” producers, or knowledge of how non-consensual porn spreads online? We’d love to hear from you. Contact Samantha Cole securely on the messaging app Signal at +6469261726, direct message on Twitter, or by email: [email protected]
But much like early deepfakes, they're rapidly improving in realism. GP has posted several experiments in the past few weeks featuring increasingly accurate naked human bodies, and even some slightly animated images, showing that convincing "porn generated entirely by AI" is not impossible.
"This all started as a quest for me to learn how all of this cool tech worked but then I ended up pivoting into the porn generation stuff as I thought it was a cool concept, especially after watching the movie Her," GP said in an email to Motherboard.
GP explained his process to Motherboard over email, as well as in detail on Reddit, posted in the popular r/MachineLearning community. He used a Stylegan2 model that's available on Github as open-source code, but loaded it with datasets of porn. It's similar to how any other face-swapping deepfake is made, but instead of using a dataset consisting of many expressions of one person's face, he pulled from multiple datasets found online.
To create the videos, GP trained the algorithms using datasets from around the web, including one that primarily consists of images ripped from Czech Casting. The datasets, which are hosted and are free to download from popular file sharing sites, are compiled by users experimenting in deepfakes and other forms of algorithmically generated images. GP found the Czech Casting dataset on one of these file sharing websites, but said that if he didn't he would have written a web scraper to collect the images from Czech Casting.
This is because of the scope and uniformity of the porn that Czech Casting has created.
Tumblr media
A censored sample of the Czech Casting dataset.
Creating algorithmically generated videos of a full, naked body requires many images and videos of real, nude people, and it's hard to imagine a more suitable resource for the task than Czech Casting.
Czech Casting, much like Girls Do Porn, specialized in casting couch-style porn, and has posted thousands of videos of women over the years. Its production style was almost algorithmic to begin with: Each video of a woman also comes with a uniform set of photographs. Each set includes a photograph of the woman holding a yellow sign with a number indicating her episode number, like a mugshot board. Each set also includes photographs of the women posing in a series of dressed and undressed shots on a white background: right side, left side, front, back, as well as extreme close ups of the face, individual nipples, and genitalia. In recent years, Czech Casting also started including 360-degrees photographs of the women, where they pose for interactive VR-style content.
"The main reason people opt for a data source like this, is that the generative adversarial models (GAN) people use, are trying to learn a general structure of an image for the class of objects you're trying to generate," GP said. "If your images are structurally similar, the model can learn more about the finer/granular details of the item class, like dimples or freckles on a face. Which leads to a higher quality result."
GP sent Motherboard a sample of the dataset he's using, which also included images from Girls Do Porn videos. Other datasets that GP is using, which Motherboard has viewed, include images that appear to be scraped from across the internet, including other porn sites, social media, and subreddits where users post selfies, like r/roastme, a subreddit where people post images of themselves for other people to judge.
Gigabytes of questionably-sourced images
In a post to the r/MachineLearning subreddit explaining how his algorithmically generated porn works, GP pauses halfway through the explanation to address "a potential ethical issue."
"I wasn't sure what to do with it, other than it being this cool thing I'd created… I'd contemplated making an OnlyFans and offering personalised AI generated nudes that talk to people," he wrote. "But someone I knew frowned upon this idea and said it was exploitative of Males who might need companionship. So I decided not to go down that route in order to avoid the ethical can of worms."
He also noted in that post that training dataset ethics is something he's concerned about. "Are the images we are training on ethical or have the people in the images been exploited in some way[?]" he wrote. "I again can't verify the back story behind hundreds of thousands of images, but I can assume some of the images in the dataset might have an exploitative power dynamic behind them," noting that some of the images are from Girls Do Porn. "I'm not sure if it's even possible to blacklist exploitative data if it's been scraped from the web. I need to consider this a bit more."
These questions didn’t stop GP from building the project in public, on social media platforms, which means he’s perpetrating harm regardless of whatever ethical quandaries he says he may have. Much of the most harmful nonconsensual content is spread on the internet through surface-level platforms like Twitter, Facebook, Reddit, OnlyFans, and tube sites like XVideos and Pornhub.
"So many mainstream porn websites host child pornography and nonconsensual pornography, and does depict rape, and profit from those through ad sales," Červenka said.
When Motherboard contacted Reddit for comment, a spokesperson said Reddit's site-wide policies "prohibit involuntary pornography, which applies to all content, including deepfakes." Reddit banned deepfakes in 2017. Both r/GeneratedPorn and r/AIGeneratedPorn were shut down after Motherboard's request for comment.
Generated Porn's user profile on Pornhub was also taken down after Motherboard contacted Pornhub. A spokesperson for Pornhub declined to comment.
Porn tube site xHamster took down GP's user profile pending further review: "These new types of content are indeed grey areas and we will need to review with our own machine learning team and TOS team to determine how to evaluate and where necessary prevent," a spokesperson for xHamster said.
XVideos, another free tube site, directed Motherboard to a content removal form.
OnlyFans did not respond to a request for comment. Patreon, where GP was asking for people to fund his project with little success, told Motherboard that while funding nonconsensual sexual content isn't permitted on the platform, if an account does contain nonconsensual porn, the platform works with the creator to bring the account within its terms of use. The project was taken down from Patreon as of Monday.
Twitter directed Motherboard to its nonconsensual nudity policy and rules for sensitive media.
"Now somebody walks up and uses those images to create a baseline for computers to use, potentially for decades to come, to use for computer generated images?”
In an email to Motherboard, GP expressed another ethical concern: that the algorithm might produce something that is recognizable as a real human—a result that would negate the whole point of his project: anonymity.
"It's quite possible for the algorithm to reproduce fake people who resemble real people, but it wouldn't be a 1-to-1 replication of the data it has trained on," he said. "This presents an ethical problem I'm trying to navigate around, which is identifying the rare situations where it does replicate a person from the ~7,500 images it's learning from. It's something that plagues generative networks… It's possible and I'm not quite sure how to 100% avoid the possibility of this happening. But I really do want to avoid this. I'm not interested in deep-faking anyone, even by accident, it's a bit scummy imho!"
GP is far from alone in this type of project. The creator of the first deepfakes told Motherboard almost the same thing in 2017: that he wasn't a professional researcher, just a programmer with an interest in machine learning who “just found a clever way to do face-swap,” he said.
These Nudes Do Not Exist and a subsequent project from the same creator called "Harem" most likely draws its data from Czech Casting—the images come out looking unmistakably similar, but the creator of that project hasn't responded to requests for comment on where the images in their dataset come from. Another abandoned project at r/AIGeneratedPorn did the same.
The real ethical issue plaguing this project is not the risk of parting lonely men from their money. It would take one search online of Czech Casting, and some basic awareness of the concept of pirated content being harmful to creators, to recognize the datasets these non-existent women are built from are comprised of gigabytes of questionably-sourced porn, some of it potentially depicting sexual assault.
On Monday, the night before this story was published and after his Patreon account was suspended, GP told Motherboard that he “decided to shut down the project.”
"It certainly should be illegal"
Jane told Motherboard that she was hoping her video would get lost among so many others online, and no one would find it. "But there is always someone who manages to fish it out from the depths of the internet," she said.
Červenka, the lawyer at McAllister Olivarius law firm who specializes in revenge porn and technology, told Motherboard that because some of the Czech Casting videos were allegedly edited to look consensual from the start, they have always been deceptive and harmful—and churning them through the meat grinder of machine learning algorithms doesn't make them less so.
"Now somebody walks up and uses those images to create a baseline for computers to use, potentially for decades to come, to use for computer generated images? It's awful, on a personal level, and it certainly should be illegal," Červenka said.
Even for professional porn performers, stolen content is an issue that plagues the industry. Adult performer Leah Gotti, whose images are part of the datasets GP is using without her consent, told me that the problem of stolen content isn't just disrespectful—it's dangerous. She's currently working to stop a stalker-fan from creating fake Instagram accounts of her and targeting her family by stealing her content and reposting it.
"It just goes back to, no one truly respects sex workers," Gotti told me. "All those things are pirated, and that's supposed to be against all the rules, but because we're having sex on camera they're like, well, she asked for it."
Earlier this year, a rumored OnlyFans leak of a database of stolen porn threatened to put sex workers on that platform in danger of being harassed or doxed.
Daisy Lee, the performer who started with Czech Casting when she was 18 but continued working in the adult industry after, told Motherboard that she blames herself for thinking that the videos wouldn't go viral worldwide.
"They don't put it on Czech servers but people download it and re-upload it everywhere," Lee said. "Every girl that goes in thinks it won't be visible to their friends and family… 14 days later [my] video was everywhere. It destroyed my reputation and spread around my home town within hours. But nobody forced me to do anything, no drugs, nothing like that."
Many of the women who were targeted by Girls Do Porn also blame themselves for believing the company’s lies claiming that the videos would stay in a certain region—in that case, in private New Zealand collections, on DVD. But the entire system of porn online, and all content online for that matter, is set up to spread videos and photos the harder one tries to remove it. Algorithms are driven by what people feed them. One Czech Casting model lost her teaching job after students found her episode online, and when she spoke out about feeling victimized by the company, people sought her video out more.

"The researcher in me feels like 'if it's been published online it's open source and fair game' however the budding capitalist in me feels like that violates IP in some sense," GP said. "I'm a bit conflicted. I've personally accepted that any data I ever create as an individual will be used by others for profit or research."
GP also said that he thinks the type of abuse Czech Casting has been accused of is "horrible," but that it's difficult to screen for this kind of abuse when creating or using datasets.
"There is no such thing as ethical use of an AI that uses database images without consent”
"Now that the abuse is present I can opt to not use that data and source data from elsewhere," GP said. "Others in the area may not care and may decide to use it anyway. It's quite difficult to screen for this data completely. Doing a google image search for 'female standing nude' gives you a bunch of Czech Casting images. Throwing on the flag '-"czech"' catches a lot of them, but some still get through the cracks."
While GP said that he could choose not to use images produced by Girls Do Porn and Czech Casting, he didn't say that he would, nor is it clear if his project and others similar to it could function without those images. GP also suggested that his project could also somehow help these women.
"I feel bad for the victims of this abuse and I can't say anything that may make them feel better," he said. "My only hope is that technology such as the tech I'm working on, now and in the future, leads to a reduction in harm to others. By making it an economical and technologically inferior choice to commit abuse."
Červenka said that even after three years of deepfakes panic and decades more of nonconsensual porn online, the laws to stop them haven't caught up. Victims could make a legal claim that they've been portrayed in a false light or defamed, especially when content is edited deceptively to make it look consensual. But that's often not enough.
"These laws have been around for a long time, and we are just trying to use them in the current context, because we don't have anything else," Červenka said "The legislature is unable to truly grapple with what people do online, and how to regulate harmful effects of what people do online."
It also becomes harder to go after anyone hosting the content if they're hosting it anonymously, all over the world, where every legal system is different. Even in the U.S., where some states have enacted deepfakes-specific laws, it differs from state to state.
When the content is buried inside a dataset, the problem is that much more difficult.
Is ethical AI porn possible?
The abuses the women in Czech Casting and Girls Do Porn endured happened in the real world, but the videos spread online made it worse. Some Girls Do Porn victims were forced to change their names, move states, drop out of school, and lost their careers or relationships with family and friends. Czech Casting victims have similar stories.
Revenge porn victims—as well as professional and amateur adult performers—spend hours sending takedown requests to websites that host their images. Often, those requests are ignored. And when it comes to datasets used to create more porn, it's hard to know where your images live on, unless you can locate where it's hosted and download a huge set of files, then sort through them to find yourself. Their worst moments are enshrined forever among gigabytes of others.
There have been efforts in recent years to create machine learning datasets that are fully consensual. After the privacy failures of MS-Celeb-1M, a dataset of 10 million photos from 100,000 individuals collected from the internet, ranging from journalists to musicians and activists, there's more awareness than ever toward ethical uses of people's faces. In 2019, for its "Deepfakes Detection Challenge," Facebook launched a dataset consisting of 100,000 videos of paid actors, for researchers to use. One of the sponsors of that challenge was data science community site Kaggle. One of the datasets Generated Porn used is hosted on Kaggle, and appears to be largely stolen, scraped porn content.
If machine learning engineers interested in creating AI porn wanted to start a fully-ethical project, they would do something similar to what Facebook did with its challenge dataset.
"They would get consent from people who want to be nude models, and say this is what we're going to build it for, and everything's on the up and up," Rumman Chowdhury, data scientist and founder of ethical AI firm Parity, told Motherboard. "And maybe even [models] would get royalties, [engineers] would go build their AI, sell it as a porn, and they would actually do pretty well." But doing things the right way costs money, and when you're tinkering with porn as a side project, it's usually money you don't have. r/AIGeneratedPorn's project died because renting server time and running the training was too expensive, according to a post in that subreddit before it went down.
"There is no such thing as ethical use of an AI that uses database images without consent," Chowdhury said.
"How can a tech that at its core has rape videos be anything but a perpetuation of rape culture?" Červenka said. "I don’t think I would sleep well at night if I were [GP], because he's relying on images of abuse to create a Frankenstein's monster."

Developing a Disaster Monitoring Service with Solace PubSub+
MakeUofT is Canada’s largest makeathon. Similar to a hackathon, it’s a place where projects come to life; a makeathon focuses on hardware-based projects where students build something from scratch through hardware and software integration.
The theme for MakeUofT 2020 was connectivity and machine learning. As a prime sponsor of the event, Solace challenged participants to make the best use of Solace PubSub+ Event Broker to stream events and information across cloud, on-premises, and IoT environments.
Alok Deshpande, a graduate from the University of Toronto in Electrical Engineering, participated with his group members in MakeUofT 2020 and chose Solace’s technology to make their project. Below, he shares how he and his group designed and developed their project.
Inspiration for the Project
Coronavirus is currently all you hear about in the news, and given that it’s a worldwide pandemic, this is quite reasonable. However, emergency events like disasters are still going on, even if you don’t hear about them as much. They can lead to the loss of lives and resources because of delays in notifying authorities, especially during times like these.
Natural disasters in remote areas, in particular, can go unnoticed because of personal and political reasons. For example, last June there was an issue here in Canada where wildfires were allowed to burn for extended periods of time because there weren’t enough members of staff available to monitor them. While detection by satellite imaging helps, clearly automatic real-time notifications from disposable sensors in the field would have provided supplementary support.
Sounds like a job for… Solace PubSub+ Event Broker!
The Telus-Telyou Project
Back in February, I worked on a team makeathon project at MakeUofT 2020 to develop the proof-of-concept of a monitoring service for this purpose, which we called Telus-Telyou. The goal was to develop connected sensor nodes that would automatically trigger warnings on connected endpoints based on their specific use. For example, in the case of fire detection, the endpoint might belong to a fire department.
There were three main requirements in this project:
The nodes should be transmitting over a cellular connection to enable both long-distance and reliable monitoring.
Many nodes should be able to provide a stream of notifications to many endpoints.
To ensure the nodes remained low-power, until a message would be provided by an end-user, the event would be recorded in low resolution
Fig. 1: General concept diagram
As shown in the diagram above, the connected nodes would transmit data to the cloud, to which multiple users could subscribe to receive notifications. Users could also publish messages to configure the nodes.
Our Design
Based on the available resources in the makeathon, my team and I decided that the sensory data could simply be temperature, humidity, GPS readings, and photos from a camera. These would be collected from a gateway computer and transmitted over LTE.
On the other end, the three endpoints were chosen to be social media (Twitter), mapping (Google Maps), and cloud computing services (Microsoft Azure) since these would simulate real-world clients in this proof-of-concept. The cloud service was chosen in particular because it would allow for integrating AI models to make predictions based on the raw sensor feed, as described in the section below on the extension to this project. Mapping was of course incorporated to ensure the end-user would be able to identify the location of the hazard.
Fig. 2: Diagram of the system architecture
Between them, we chose to incorporate an event broker to handle the messaging, based on the second and third requirements. After looking into some options (including Azure’s own broker), we decided that Solace PubSub+ Event Broker was the way to go because it wouldn’t tie the project to any given service.
Building Telus-Telyou
To physically build the project, we used a Raspberry Pi computer as the gateway, connected to a Telus LTE modem shield and a RaspiCam camera. My teammates interfaced the sensors on the HAT as well as the camera to the Pi using provided APIs. We then configured the modem to transmit point-to-point so that we’d be able to communicate over TCP to PubSub+ Event Broker.
Fig. 3: Hardware – Raspberry Pi and LTE shield
After this came the fun part – setting up the event broker!
I used the Paho MQTT client to set up the Raspberry Pi to continuously publish the temperature, humidity, and GPS data, since these are tiny payloads.
class IoT_Client(paho.mqtt.client.Client): def __init__(self,node_ID): self.clean_session=False self.publish_detailed = False self.node_ID = 0 #User-defined #A dictionary of requested measurements, with numeric keys and string identifiers as values self.sensor_data_enum = { idx : type_str for idx, type_str in enumerate(['temp', 'humidity', 'lat', 'longitude'])} def on_connect(self, client, userdata, flags, rc): self.subscribe("nodes/{self.node_ID}/detailed_request", 0) def add_measurement(meas_name:str): self.self.sensor_data_enum[len(self.self.sensor_data_enum)+1] = meas_name def getPubTopic(datatype_idx, event_stream): return f"nodes/{self.node_ID}/{self.sensor_data_enum[datatype_idx]}/{event_stream}" def getPhotoPubTopic(event_stream): return f"nodes/{self.node_ID}/camera/{event_stream}" ...... ...... try: #Get sensor feed continuously. Could be modified to pause conditionally while True: #Get sensor data from wrapper. Input is the dictionary of requested measurements # Returns sentinel NaN if a measurement type is absent or the measurements are faulty sensor_data, timestamp = getSensorData(iot_client.sensor_data_enum) for val, idx in enumerate(sensor_data): #For each measurement type in data requested… if faulty publish diagnostics if val == np.nan: iot_client.publish( getPubTopic(idx, 'diagnostics'), json.dumps({"error":'Absent or faulty'}) ) else: payload = {"node": iot_client.node_ID, "timestamp":timestamp, iot_client.sensor_data_enum[idx]: val} payload = json.dumps(payload,indent=4) iot_client.publish( getPubTopic(idx, 'measure') , payload) #…Otherwise publish measurements ....... except: iot_client.loop_stop() iot_client.disconnect()
I also set it up to subscribe to requests to publish photos, since they would be relatively larger messages and should only be sent infrequently.
....... #Set flag to publish more detailed information only when receive callback def on_message(client, userdata, msg): client.publish_detailed=True ...... iot_client.on_message = on_message ..... #Get sensor feed continuously. Could be modified to pause conditionally while True: ...... #Publish more detailed messages (just photo stream, for now) if(publish_detailed==True): publish_detailed = False #Clear flag once request acknowledged image_contents_arr = getImage() #Wrapper to take image using RaspiCam and read from file im_bytes = bytearray(image_contents_arr) #Convert to byte array for serialization im_payload = json.dumps( {"node": client.node_ID, "timestamp": timestamp, "camera": im_bytes}, indent=4) iot_client.publish( getPhotoPubTopic(iot_client.node_ID, "measure"), im_payload ) .......
Specifically, these requests would come from the end client, which would publish based on the end user’s interaction (not shown here). For this use case, we assumed that the end-user would review the sensory data and make a judgement based on the likelihood of an emergency as to whether to request a photo stream.
Finally, we used Node-Red to connect the Twitter, Azure, and Google Maps endpoints.
Fig. 4: Picture of node-red flow
The following screenshot shows part of the system in action, as it publishes messages to Twitter when the temperature exceeds an arbitrary threshold:
Fig. 5: Image of Tweets
Extension: Smart Public Camera
After the makeathon, we decided that this system could be greatly improved by leveraging the AI capabilities on Azure. This would allow end-users to avoid having to constantly monitor it. It would also solve the problem of having to run inference on the edge device, since many (unlike the Raspberry Pi) have limited memory.
To achieve this, we set up a pipeline on Azure ML where a Stream Analytics job would consume the messages from IoT Hub and a predictive model and then feed the results back to IoT Hub. From there, the prediction using the sensor data was published to a new topic called ‘/prediction’, as shown below. Other clients could then subscribe to this prediction.
Fig. 6: Picture of modified node-red flow
Unfortunately, this use case didn’t apply for our original application, since there were no disaster prediction AI models we found that would make use of our limited sensor data.
The alternative application we considered was in civil emergencies, such as identifying the need for help from cameras installed in a city. Since we had a RaspiCam, we imagined it could be installed similarly and an SOS gesture detected. After finding a pre-built gesture detector on Azure, we fed to it images of hand gestures taken with the RaspiCam and had the AI model predict whether the hand was raised.
The video below shows the prediction from the model – a bounding box when the gesture is detected – superimposed on the feed from the camera. Incidentally, the choppiness (low frame rate) is due to a combination of the slow rate of inference and of the rate of MQTT publications.

  What We Learned
For many of us, this was our first time working on an IoT project, so it was fun to see how easily a physical device could be connected to the cloud and web services we are familiar with. My team and I discovered how easy-to-use and versatile Solace’s PubSub+ Platform is for this kind of applications. The started examples in Python and Node.js were helpful to get up and running, and the Web Messaging demo (‘Try Me!’) particularly helped for just testing out the API. We also learned a lot about the event-driven architecture from talking with Solace employees, who were very helpful. For our next project, we hope to try other Solace messaging platforms!

Adobe Unleashes Flurry of Creative Cloud Features at its MAX Event
As Adobe continues to broaden its Creative Cloud offering it’s hard to keep track of all the new applications, let alone all the new features. This week at MAX, updates arrived for just about every piece of Adobe’s creator ecosystem. We’ll take you through some of the most significant for photo and video creators — specifically updates to Premiere Pro and Rush, Photoshop, and Lightroom.
Auto Reframe Comes to Premiere Pro
With the proliferation of different social media video formats and the requirement for specific aspect ratios for web video embeds, re-framing existing videos has become a major time sink for many creatives. So Adobe has harnessed the power of its Sensei AI platform to help them tackle the task, by adding an Auto Reframe Effect to Premiere Pro. You can simply select a clip, or an entire sequence, and Premiere Pro will generate a new version in a different aspect ratio. The auto-generated crop will move to follow what Sensei decides is the subject. You can give it a hint about how quickly it needs to react to motion in the scene. The output sequence or clip is governed by a set of automatically-generated keyframes. So if the output isn’t exactly what you want, you can further refine it. Of course all the Adobe demos of the feature look awesome, so rather than just show you one of those we put the feature through something of a torture test. We used the vertical format Osmo Mobile 3 sample video from our review of the product, and told Auto-reframe to generate a more-traditional 16:9 horizontal format. That’s about as extreme a change as you can ask for, so we weren’t sure what to expect. In some ways, the effect worked really well, but it had a hard time knowing which of the people in the frame were the best to follow, and it also seemed to jump around more than was necessary. But if I needed to do this task, it would definitely be a nice head start over doing it manually. Below are the original video clip and the one generated by Auto Reframe in Premiere Pro:
youtube
Here is the 16:9 automatically-generated version:
youtube
As one example of a nice time saver, notice that the Reframe is smart enough to move the motion graphics title caption up into the frame and hold it steady. Perhaps not rocket science, but would be an extra step if you were doing the reframing entirely manually. Other improvements to Premiere Pro aren’t quite as dramatic, but they include improved tools for working with shapes and layers. Underlining text is now supported, and there are some improvements to the workflow for Motion Graphics. One special effect that will appeal to some folks is native support for speedups up to 20,000% (200x) without needing to mess around with nesting. Under the hood Adobe has improved its support for modern formats and decoders, including better ProRes HDR performance, as well as HEVC and H.265. You can also now add HDR10 metadata to your exports. As far as hardware, support has been added for the Canon C500, Canon XF-HEVC, and Sony Venice V4. You can also export Apple ProRes in MXF on both macOS and Windows. Premiere Rush now supports TikTok as a native video sharing option. When Adobe first said they had an exciting improvement for Rush, I was really hoping for LUT support. But unfortunately, that’s still off in the future, as is a version that will run on Chromebooks.
Photoshop 2020 Focuses on Performance
Adobe’s big push for Photoshop in 2020 is performance. They even funded a study of benchmarks that concludes that on average it is twice as fast as the 2019 version. Part of that is improvements to the interface and workflow, and part is optimization of the software itself. In particular the Properties panel has been over-hauled with the goal of making more operations easy to access. One exciting piece of news for those who create on the road is the shipment of the first version of the promised Photoshop for iPad. It isn’t at feature parity with the desktop version — no surprise — but looks like it will be a solid option for those who don’t need full functionality and don’t want to haul a full laptop around. Adobe is also showcasing an extension to its AI-powered Subject Selection tool that allows you to select an arbitrary object. You simply drag out a rectangle that surrounds the object you’re interested in, and it will do its best to select the object. From experimenting with a pre-release version, I’m fairly impressed. It is certainly a big head start over using any of the current manual and semi-automated tools. However, as you can see from this example, it isn’t perfect. So if you have a complex subject, you’ll likely need to apply some finishing touches to your selection.
Lightroom gets new features across all platforms, although as has been true for a while the cloud-centric version of Lightroom for desktops gets more updates than the Classic version. It sees new guided tutorials and interactive edits — which have been very popular in the mobile version of the app. Export also offers additional options for resolution, compression, metadata, file naming, output sharpening, and color space. IMAGE AI comes into play here too, with the addition of an option to have both versions of Lightroom and Camera Raw fill in the blank edges caused in some types of panorama merges. There is also an interesting new tool that allows users to migrate catalogs from Photoshop Elements. That makes sense for photographers who started out with the lighter weight Elements tools and are moving up to Creative Cloud. The updated version of Lightroom also takes more advantage of GPUs for improved performance, especially on high-resolution monitors.
Lightroom can now automatically fill in blank areas created when merging panoramas
Plenty of Features for Everyone Else
For users of Character Animator, After Effects, Audition, and most of the other Creative Cloud applications, there are plenty of other goodies. One feature that can benefit all Creative Cloud users is access to Library assets from Microsoft Word and Powerpoint. An interesting app that Adobe didn’t discuss during its press briefings is a new Photoshop Camera app. It uses AI to analyze the scene as you shoot and make recommendations. It also provides some lens presets for creative effects. It is available as a preview version for Android and iOS now, with general availability expected in 2020.

A Review Of An Apple iPhone XS Review : Two Steps Forword, And One Step Back
The iPhone XS doesn't break the mold like the iPhone X, its battery life is shorter, but its camera, design and performance are at the leading edge.
The iPhone XS is not the only full-screen iPhone this year, but with its large screen and compact body, can it still buy an iPhone?
To say that the iPhone XS looks exactly the same as the iPhone X, it's a bit understated. In addition to a new pair of antennas and asymmetrical holes at the bottom, the phone is still the same metal and glass sandwich. Unless you buy a new gold.
Fortunately, this generation is not a bad thing, because it retains everything that the iPhone X did so well last year. This includes squeezing the big screen into a compact body, a luxurious feel and a first-class new design, abandoning the home button.
The 5.8-inch OLED screen is one of the best screens ever for smartphones, allowing you to watch movies and TV shows while commuting. The speakers are now loud, but this time there is still no headphone jack and no flash to 3.5mm adapter.
Weighing 177 grams, the iPhone XS weighs 3 grams more than the phone it replaces, 3 grams lighter than the Huawei P20 Pro and 14 grams more than the Samsung Galaxy S9. It is thinner than most of the 7.7mm thick. All of this says it's easy to carry pockets and handles with one or two hands.
The iPhone XS has the same internal structure as its larger brother XS Max and is not surprisingly identical. With the six-core A12 Bionic, this phone is responsive and fluent and may require more original power than most people until some magical new app appears to take advantage of it.
Game performance is also excellent, and the improved AI processor accelerates the AR experience and other machine learning systems.
Unfortunately, like the iPhone XS Max, the iPhone XS marks a step back in Apple's battery life. The iPhone X lasted 30 hours between charges, while the iPhone XS only scratched within 24 hours.
This means that if I remove it from the charger at 7 am the first day, it will only sound an alarm at 7 am the next morning without plugging in, which means you definitely need to charge at least once a day. On a heavy day, when I go to bed, it will fall to the ground.
This is using it as my primary device to send and receive hundreds of emails, messages and push notifications, listen to five hours of music on a Bluetooth headset, watch an hour of Netflix, and shoot about 10 photos a day.
The all-day battery is the lowest acceptable battery in 2018, and competitors can continue to nearly double.
While there are many factors that can affect battery life, it's worth noting that iPhone XS and iPhone XS Max are heavily affected by cellular network congestion, such as those encountered by commuter trains and packing stations, rather than competitors.
Both phones have a higher bounce rate between Edge, 3G and 4G than iPhone X, Google's Pixel 2 XL and another. Even with a full 4G signal, the iPhone has difficulty reducing data and when competitors are still trying to load the site. Become hotter and email, albeit very slow.
iPhone XS runs iOS 12 out of the box, which is an improvement over iOS 11 last year, not a massive reorganization. Due to the screen gap, it still has the same problem of losing state icons, but it has been greatly improved by packet notification processing, and now integrates health tools, so you can pay close attention to smartphone usage.
When you have a "Do Not Disturb" activity, Apple also adds a prominent banner to the lock screen, which makes it harder to forget to disable it when you wake up.
Facial Identification Code
Face ID is returned as Apple's only biometric option on the iPhone XS. It works the same way as last year, making sure I'm not wrong, uncovering my notice and unlocking my phone.
It may encounter problems with some sunglasses and may choose to use my fingerprint to unlock or pay for it.
Camera
The iPhone XS has the same camera system as the XS Max - with two 12-megapixel cameras on the back, one with a wide-angle lens and the other with a 2x telephoto lens.
This year's new feature is better detail capture, especially when viewing images at full resolution, as well as better low light performance. However, Apple's improved "smart HDR" feature is the most eye-catching, making images with extreme contrast, such as images that enter the sun, more practical.
The portrait mode has also been improved, and it is now interesting to be able to adjust the level of background blur after capture.
Self-timer cameras are great, but they are not the best choice for storing skin details on the market. Some people complain that it makes the skin smooth and makes them look orange, but this is not what I saw in the photo.
Opinion
• The camera block protrudes from the back so that it will shake when used on the desktop
• You can swipe on the gesture bar to jump to the previously used app
• You need a USB-C to Lightning cable to quickly charge your phone, but the box does not contain anything or a compatible charger.
• iPhone XS waterproof reaches IP68 standard, higher than last year's iPhone
• Wireless charging is great, but the iPhone heats up a lot when charging, more than a competitor's phone
• This iPhone XS, purchased from Apple's online store, charges well when turning the screen on or off.
Price
The iPhone XS is available in black, silver or gold with a storage capacity of £999 for 64GB, £1,149 for 256GB and £1,349 for 512GB.
The 6.1-inch iPhone XR will be released in October for £64 and is priced at £64.
Verdict
iPhone X provides a new standard for the iPhone. This is a huge improvement for Apple and is ahead of many competitors in smartphone design and functionality.
The iPhone XS maintains forward-thinking design and functionality, is full-featured, has a significantly better camera, and is still the best mobile phone on the market to balance screen size and usability.
But it is certainly not perfect, battery life is weaker than last year, and the price is still astounding. With the cheaper 6.1-inch in the iPhone XR coming soon, it might be worth waiting to see what it looks like before selling for £999, but the iPhone XS is still great.

Hands On: Google Pixel 3
Tumblr media
I’m here at Google’s launch event for the Pixel 3 and Pixel 3 XL in New York. Have they got a world-leading smartphone camera again? “People say last year’s Pixel 2 still takes the best pictures, even in a year with other great flagships,” boasts Rick Osterloh on stage. I’m a huge fan of Google’s latest Pixel phones. To me, they signaled a point at which Android competed with iOS. The cameras are world class, the software is butter smooth, and it sets the standard for other manufacturers. The iPhone is still the gold standard in my eyes, but the Pixel line has been nothing but a success. Google’s camera tech has been ahead of the curve for two years now, but will they get a third? Bear in mind that this year marks Google’s 20th anniversary. They’re announcing a partnership with Annie Leibovitz, stealing her from Apple. They also gave the phone to seven magazines to make covers: GQ, Glamour, W and others, with Ryan Gosling and Cardi B as subjects. Sure enough, the covers look great, and it’s a really cool rebuttal to Apple’s “Shot on iPhone” campaign.
Tumblr media
Initial Thoughts
The Pixel 3 feels like Google has done it again. If Android is your jam, then this is the poster child. Now if it only had a headphone jack. There’s a single camera on the back and front. That means all the tricks will need to be done with software, which so far Google’s been the only one to handle so well. Both the regular and XL models have the same camera setup. The notch on the XL is something you’ll just have to get used to. It seems pretty wide, but the, so is the iPhone’s. What might be more of a concern is the smaller version. It has the regular bezel on top, but also a chin on the bottom. It’s nice to have stereo speakers (which sound quite full-bodied when I tested), but it definitely loses part of the bezel-less feeling.
Tumblr media
Features
Dual 8MP cameras on the front, one 12MP camera on the rear. The rear can record 4K up to 30 fps, and we have 1080p on the front. Both phones are getting “Titan Security,” which Google uses in their data centers. This will be utilized with a dedicated chip in the phones. They’re being very clear about security here because this week Google+ was shut down over a security breach. As before, the camera takes a burst of photos to create their “HDR+” images. From experience, they’re stunning and have stellar low-light capability. “Top Shot” is a new feature to avoid missing the shot. It’s not unlike Apple’s Live Photos system, but intended to just get the best image. They’re also using AI to suggest the best photo to choose. They’re using AI to get better digital zoom. Other brands have been trying this. One way of achieving a better image is using AI to sharpen text. “Night Sight” is a new low-light mode, and it looks awesome. Better yet, it will also be coming to older Pixel phones next month. Stay tuned for our full review on this. Worth noting that Huawei and others have been including a night mode for some time now, so I’m excited to see how Google looks side by side. The front-facing camera is wider than before, but doesn’t include portrait mode, unfortunately. “Playground” is their new AR sticker system for both cameras. It’s built into the camera app as before. I love these, and apparently, characters can interact with you better. They’ve got a Donald Glover character and some new Avengers (Iron Man, The Hulk). Coming to older phones too. Google Lens uses the Pixel Visual Core to bring their search engine to the camera. One example is the ability to recognize a brand of sunglasses used in a shot. You can now change the focus of portrait mode photos, the amount of blur, and even get selective color between your subject and background. Smile to trigger and motion-tracked autofocus are also included. Non-Camera Features Google Assistant will now be able to book a table at a restaurant in select cities, and ask a caller why they’re calling before you answer (mitigating telemarketers). “Flip to Shhh” will allow you to put the phone down on its face and have it turn over to silent mode. The speakers are apparently 40 percent louder, which is handy because the phone comes with 6 months of YouTube Music. I couldn't hear any distortion, but they can't pack much bass.
Unlimited Storage
The first Pixel devices famously had unlimited photo and video storage at full resolution, so long as it was uploaded from the device to Google Photos. That also included 4K video, which was a real treat and saved a lot of money in cloud storage. According to Diya Jolly, 1.2 billion photos are uploaded every day. Unfortunately, this wasn’t the case for the second generation. The Pixel 2 would get unlimited storage, uncompressed, until 2020. After that, your images and videos will be compressed. Not a big deal because Google’s compression is really stellar, and you still get unlimited storage. A little annoying if 4K video is your thing though. This year, we’ll be seeing free unlimited storage, but this time it will last until January 2022 at full quality. After that Google compress new photos taken.
Comparisons
The original Google Pixel’s camera was surprisingly great, and was subsequently outpaced by the Pixel 2. Now that the previous generation is considered the best smartphone camera available, can Google go any further? This time around the bells and whistles are largely software based. I'm a fan of the wide field of view on the front facing camera, mostly because you can zoom in. Portrait mode on the rear is a nice touch, although I prefer the look of the main camera. Unfortunately both the video mode and portrait mode have a pretty big crop factor. The first generation Pixel didn't have that for its portrait mode, because it required you to tilt up the phone and was sort of a pseudo portrait mode. On the note of clarity: the screen doesn’t appear to have any color cast issues that some people found on the Pixel 2. Of course it’s hard to tell in a controlled environment. Bringing up a gradient showed no major banding, as expected, so there shouldn’t be any issue with crushed blacks like some Pixel 2 users saw.
Other New Products
Google Home Hub is like a tablet mixed with a Google Home speaker, and both this and their other speakers can work with Nest’s suite of products. It deliberately doesn’t have a camera, to put your mind at ease. It will sell for $149. Google’s new Pixel Slate is taking on Microsoft and Apple. Trond Wuellner said “filmmakers that make movies in 8K rave about this display” but I’ll take that with a pretty big grain of salt. 8MP cameras on front and back, and portait mode on both. No headphone jack but 2 USB-C ports. $599 for the tablet, $199 for the keyboard and $99 for the pen. The Pixel Stand is a wireless charger, that turns your phone into something similar to the Home Hub. Retails for $79.

Final Thoughts
The regular 64GB model starts at $799, and the XL starts at $899. Add $100 if you want 128GB. They'll both be available next month on the Google Store. It’s not the most exciting phone, there were no surprise announcements – but it’s probably still the best Android phone you can get. Google are proving that their AI and software solutions are an alternative to adding more lenses. I’m looking forward to seeing it out in the real world, and honestly I can’t see why this camera won’t be in the top three smartphone cameras available. We'll have a full review of this in the coming weeks so stay tuned. Via: Fstoppers Read the full article

How to Migrate Your Content from Medium to WordPress
Medium is a great platform for publishing content. While most people look at it as a place for blogging, the creators call it a publishing platform. And it’s very good at what it does. The community there is fantastic. The UI is clean, smooth, and easy to use. But people are migrating away from Medium to WordPress in droves because of the consistently inconsistent updates, social interaction, and monetization strategies. If that’s you, then this post should be useful.
Going from Medium to WordPress
I don’t want you to think that this is a Medium-bashing post. No, there are quite a few benefits to being on Medium, and we discuss those in comparison to WordPress at length here. Between security, ease of use, built-in audience and community, and simple monetization options, Medium is still a great platform.
For some people.
If you’re not one of those people or publishers, moving to WordPress is a strong option. A lot of high-profile companies have moved their web presence from Medium to WordPress over the past year, including Slack, ThinkProgress, The Awl, and Film School Rejects.
Generally, the reasons cited for the move primarily includes maintaining independent control of their own content and their monetization strategies.
For WP.com Users
Because of the exodus to our favorite CMS, the WordPress team has put together a Medium import tool if you use WordPress.com (including the VIP accounts). Unfortunately, this doesn’t work for self-hosted WP installs. You’ll use a slightly different method.
The first thing you need is your Medium content. So head over to Medium.com and go into your user settings. You may have to scroll a while to get to the Download Your Information button under the Account heading. From there, click on Download .zip.
The next screen tells you what information will be included in the download. Because of how Medium works, you will also get a backup of responses and comments and such as well since those are counted as content you created.
In the next little bit, they’ll send you an email with a download link. Just click it, and you will have your Medium post info.
For users on Gmail (and potentially other providers), the link may freeze when you click it, downloading nothing. If you right-click the link, you can save the file directly that way. It’s not a redirect.
Performing the Import
As soon as you log into your WP.com account, you will see an Import button at the bottom of your sidebar.
You will see the options listed on the next page. Select Medium, obviously.
After that, only an upload stands between you and your move from Medium to WordPress. Once complete, your content from Medium will appear as posts on your site — original dates included.
For WordPress.org (Self-Hosted WP)
Unfortunately, the Tools – Import page in your WordPress dashboard doesn’t have integrated Medium support like the .com dashboard does. That doesn’t mean that you can’t do it, though. You just have to use a different plugin.
Unfortunately, Medium doesn’t follow convention in many ways, and their export is not an XML file (they give you HTML). Their RSS feeds also don’t follow standard RSS conventions. Never fear, though. We have you covered.
The first thing you need is the feed URL for your account. It should be at https://ift.tt/2PzXa3G. When you load that up, you will see the raw code for the feed. It still doesn’t have a .rss or .xml extension, despite actually being a .xml file (thanks, Medium). Right-click anywhere on the page and save the page to your computer. This will be a .xml file.
But what to do with that XML file? Well, you want to download the very appropriately titled “Import any XML or CSV File to WordPress” plugin. Or as it’s referred to in the dashboard, All Import.
With it, you can take that XML that Medium should have given you and map it directly to the taxonomies of your site.
Step 1
All you have to do is go to the new All Import menu item, start a new import, upload the file, and tell it whether you want to create posts, pages, or another kind of content on your site.
Step 2
Step 3
The content from the feed is available to check here. Under the item box to the left, you can see all of the post parts put together. Don’t be scared of this, even though it looks intimidating. On the next step, you will build a template so that parse it all out so that WordPress knows what to do with it. (Don’t worry, it’s drag and drop.)
When you see the Title & Content header, you can drag the section you want to go into each field. So you click on “title” to the right, and you drag it into the Title field. Same for the “content_encoded” tag. You put it in the content area.
Categories work the same way. So do tags. You just drag the categories you want into the appropriate field. You can put as many categories as you want. The plugin will only apply as many as are listed in the feed.
Step 4
When the next screen asks for the Unique Identifier, it needs something to differentiate each item in your feed apart for database entry. And if you need to edit the import in any way, this will make sure things are applied appropriately. I just hit Auto-detect and trusted the software.
Step 5
The last thing you need to do is just run the import. If everything goes as planned (and it should), you’ll get some big green words telling you in big green letters that your import was a success. Congrats. Now all you have to do is check your posts section to see your new content.
The Caveat
Neither the Medium export nor the RSS feed contains the images you may have used in your posts. Because you are using the raw HTML to create new posts, the images being used are delivered by Medium’s own CDN. If you want them hosted on your own site, you will have to use an external importer to grab them from the feed, manually download/upload them all, or purchase the Pro version of All Import to handle that.
Medium to WordPress to…WordPress?
You do have access to a third, slightly more roundabout option, too. Not everyone will want to jump through the hoops, but you can:
use the Medium to WordPress import tool on WP.com
export your site contents
import the new WordPress file into your self-hosted WordPress
Just follow the instructions above to import them to WP.com. Then go to Settings – Export and pick which content is from Medium.
Now, with the newly exported file in hand, head to your main WordPress dashboard and install the WordPress import tool under Tools – Import.
And a few clicks later, you have taken your posts from Medium to WordPress…to WordPress.
Wrapping Up
Medium doesn’t make it easy to leave its platform. That’s pretty normal for a self-contained ecosystem trying to make a profit. But it’s not really that hard to go from Medium to WordPress, you just have to find the right tools. Because their export is HTML and not XML, you are limited to which importers can handle it. Additionally, the RSS feed is formatted in a non-standard way, so it doesn’t always directly link back to a domain (often it’s a relative domain). Regardless, you’ve got options when it comes to going to WordPress. Even if it may seem daunting, you can have it done in a few clicks and maybe a few drags.
It’s not that hard to do, but I suppose it’s not super easy, either. I guess we could say it’s…medium.
What are your thoughts on Medium? Why have you chosen the platform you did?

Best Gameboy Games Of Them All
Homes that are mobile can be bought by you for not as than adhere-built households in most areas of the nation. Itis all not flawlessly organic, with your personality, the foes, and power-ups ranking out properly from each other and the history, but it's undoubtedly got a look that is drab to it. The overall game comprises because of it to the technological area, with clean, smooth design, even though the battlefield is in utter mayhem. In a single room, a radio will help you hear an encrypted SSTV transmission, which when uncoded, leads to a secret spoiler graphic that clues at a later landscape in the recreation. Consequently arrive at searching for this one game that could or may not be worth a lot of dollars in attic and your garage. Mailed MacSoft (currently Destineer Games) about this, I would recommend everyone else does precisely the same. With all the A8 cpu, Apple-developed engineering like Metallic are supported, enabling app and game developers to obtain efficiency that is optimum from the nick with graphical effects and the most effective images. I do believe there is a massive progress of gender and libido in activities and it's really ridiculous to think that gamers aren't inspired not or by that into it. Simply because they program and would rather promote these at 10 bucks a take to the Wii and Wiiu. On getting their GameCube they plan plus they N64 lineup of activities in the couple of months that are next towards the Wiiu's process cycle's end. It would possess of catch up to perform a significant sport, even when expensive worked properly. Today they have got their motor fixed they often will only add it and what, build in more animation, enhance AI, all their future games and Science can take advantage of that. It really only requirements 1.8GB, there was a pest within the initial release where the assets were downloadable by in actuality the recreation double, however it has been fastened. Nor are http://gyonyoru-emelet.info/ on the App-Store, although not them all are success-stories... So as opposed to patting outselves on the correct to the again for landing (i.e. Worthwhile) aspect of the fencing and performing the praises of the favorite-yet-bothersome-and-potentially-selfconsuming mobile industry simply because folks have been running to it by association, probably we must contemplate what prospects the long run holds in the event the newest developments continue. If the overall game was a crank to perform is how exactly we determined our cherished NES carts' order - once again and so do not be amazed should you discover an important or important concept below something we cherished to perform over and over. Whilst the sport can be performed from start to end without paying a penny, high rate items and choices objects are almost entirely for spending participants just. The ultimate goal of the formation covering regarding activities is actually a world that self-perpetuates and where players earnestly generate and change the-world around these. And yet http://gyonyoru-emelet.info/ like IGN and Eurogamer are still growing and portable gaming websites like TouchArcade (the self-proclaimed main and greatest!) are tragedy and need a Patreon to survive. Samsung dual-sim mobilephone likewise related to on-line and sites like Wireless technology, Flash, Wi-Fi, GSM 900/1800, WAP and dual-band. I'm a huge lover of iOS devices, but adore the games devices on android (JXD, nVidia Protect, and OUYA for example) I'd never get an android phone, but prefer to get their console like devices. Generally speaking, you will prevent many of these problems of building criteria and codes if you purchase simply mobiles. As an example the burning town scene and Snake shouting while in the E3 2014 trailer, Africa child soldiers being experienced by their master along with a captive finding chance in the E3 2013 trailer, the mission-based in Africa which was highlighted within the TGS 2014 exhibition combined with the PS4 cardboard pack are not any where to be within the overall game. To complete the same over a Mac, take a look at our how-to move records to some Mac guidebook from an Android. But as far as being not unable to be a serious gamer on the cellular phone I do believe it's really a truth to tons of individuals the same as being a serious playstation player will be to a playstation participant. And GBAoid (also known as GameBoid) addresses these handheld activities without bursting a work. He is able to surely play a lot of games which are out for the Mac, but many things is stillnever out for the Macintosh. Like Miyamoto has claimed before, portable is just a marketplace by which games have an extremely low value (many shoppers don't desire to spend a cent regarding them, exclusively within the android market space, with more clients willing to purchase activities on iOS and Windows Phone, but nonetheless being a small group overall) and releasing their key activities there would simply devalue them. Game motors typically provide and manage characteristics that you just will have to produce oneself. Several foremost mobile community corporations and portable manufactures have worked to provide you having best deals fitting your monetary allocations. Most of them are only appealing to your general-education on sport characteristics hypothesis (epic indicating, societal material of games). It eclipsing its two prior entries. , and over 6 mil devices had previously marketed by the end-of the summer, rapidly observed an audience Odds are, if you are using Sport Center a whole lot, you're currently likely to get yourself a few friends needs each now and then. Osikiri.and and Nexus 5 using mobile community support Nexus SEVEN, as a result of Googleis attempt will get the 5.1 revise and the update, respectively later than a few of the tailored phones from Motorola LG, HTC, etc. I really donot get why posting an android article offers pissed-off numerous individuals (kiddies) I Have been here only over a year and presumed it was for several portable gaming, not only ios. The G does not feature the fast charging features nowadays present in leading Android devices, however it certainly appeared to impose faster when I swapped the investment charger. Nevertheless, it is not really a system era that was fresh, and Ms does not plan to release activities which can be simply usable on Xbox UTES. Let us take a look that is closer. The only real problem is which platform can first obtain it — Android (s goog) or Apple's (s aapl) iOS. The overall game has become a societal occurrence, not forgetting a money maker regarding Niantic Laboratories, The Pokemon Business. But if you know the right path around RPGs and are buying challenge, considerably mouthful wo n't be found by you here till incredibly overdue inside the recreation. Furthermore, each sport continues to be made for a global audience, indicating there is no wording. What I performed of Defeat Policemanis demo was merely the tiniest small pc-game not planned until after this drop for launch. Niantic has additionally uncovered it's currently considering adding a sponsorship system just like one it has using its other AR- based Ingress, which assigns holdsI outlets and merchandising devices as areas within the sport. We have outlined a number of the most popular MFi - suitable activities initial. Unfortunately, the games are not arranged well and I might suggest you trojan verify what you may obtain. Eventually, the developers resolved since it was allowed to be a viral advertising way of the next game Batman: Arkham Area, while in the line they'd simply disclose it themselves. All of these, capabilities that gain 100PERCENT of the devices that operate it, and improve the android expertise miles before what a shitty multiwindow like Samsungis execution might have gained (and it would likely get run on middle-top quality products). I seethe new console might link to the mobile earth which seriously is not a poor notion but let's delay and find out when they broadcast the system. Gazing to Rim many of these manufacturers that are massive are returning with selection of highend mobile phone models on the market usually. In regards to community buildings, wherever anyone place them to your home buildings in relation becomes a vital the main game. In case you try to go a gem the overall game can automatically return it to the original placement. I actually donot genuinely believe that status that is underdog can be an element for most people in choosing their smartphone, but the reality is that in Android (Bing) versus. iOS (Apple) or Apple v. Samsung, you'll find no underdogs. There's something fundamentally distinct about playing a video-game and becoming” a figure versus vicariously experiencing an account through actors on a screen. There are several community vendors that can give you mobilephone specials regarding this amazing system at some charges that are successful. This sport is meant for Android phones, it's at beta period, but we'll as time goes on help it become readily available for: Macintosh Computer and linux linux. Ought to not be unhappy with android. But for those that has an actual preference of iOS will never be happy with android.
