WIP Wednesday
I am full fucking steam ahead with the arranged marriage fic this week and having a blast. It's an absolute anachronism stew of, like: fantasy geography! but also a default assumption of sexuality in this world being bi/pan/mspec rather than straight! but also arranged marriages! but also internet!—world-building is my nemesis so we are one hundred percent just rolling with it, okay? Okay.
“Good afternoon, Queen Mary,” he says, rehearsed and careful. There’s a time and a place for his usual brand of irreverence, and even Alex knows this isn’t it. “Your kingdom has offered me such a warm welcome.”
“Yes, they have.” Mary doesn’t exactly seem thrilled about that, which is rude. Alex is a fucking catch, actually. “It would appear that my people are excited for this wedding to go ahead. But are you? Does the prospect of finally being married to my grandson please you?”
And how the fuck is Alex meant to answer such a direct question without kicking off a whole international incident? He can’t tell the truth, but neither can he bring himself to say what he knows she wants to hear. After a long, terrifying pause in which Alex is sure the entirety of both their families are staring at him, waiting for a response, he finally manages: “Our betrothal has been overlong, Your Majesty. I will be pleased to make Windsor my new home.”
Mary purses her lips. “Indeed,” is all she says in reply, a clear dismissal and a sign for the receiving line to keep moving.

Thanks for the tag @ssmtskw! The particularly eagle-eyed amongst you may have noticed that the Alex and Bea fake dating WIP is a WIP no longer, so here's the next one to tick off the list:
The morning after Alex’s twenty-first birthday, his mom calls him into the library after breakfast. She’s sitting on the sofa when he enters rather than one of the armchairs like she normally does; she takes his hand as he sits down next to her, and he knows.
“I’m getting married, huh.” He doesn’t bother framing it as a question.
“We’ve put Windsor off as long as we can, Alex; even the push to wait until you were 21 was controversial.”
“I know.” In fairness, he didn’t ask his mom to delay making it official after he turned eighteen. It wasn’t that she expected another option to materialise—he’s pretty sure she was trying to give him and Henry more time to get to know each other, maybe move past their animosity a little. They’ve been pushed together every few months for the last three years, their betrothal all but official. “I just… I still can’t quite get my head around it, you know? Married. To Henry.”

Six(ish) Sentence Sunday
I had a long weekend this weekend and it still went by way too quickly. I'd like a refund.
But! Arranged marriage. Poll on whether or not I should say 'fuck it' and start posting is still open for another few hours, speak now or forever hold your peace etc etc. In the meantime, though...
Alex has no idea what he’s done wrong, and it unsettles him.
He’s used to rubbing people up the wrong way. He’s free with his opinions, terrible at schooling his expression when someone he’s talking to is being particularly obnoxious, and, well, he’s a prince—he can be out of touch sometimes, even if he doesn’t mean to be. But usually when someone is making their dislike of him clear, he knows why.
This time, he’s at a loss.
Henry hasn’t even looked at him since he stepped foot into the room to sign the contract. A couple of dozen photographers capture the way Henry takes the pen out of Alex’s hand carefully—so carefully that they don’t touch once during the whole process—and adds his own, ridiculously flowery signature before stalking right back out of the room without a word or a backwards glance.

Thank you @stereopticons for the tag! Have some unavoidable infodumping/exposition from a little arranged marriage something-something I've been picking away at (world-building is my worst nightmare as a writer and is why I am so uncomfortable writing AUs lmaooooo help)
“And what would you have me do, sugar—throw aside the Charter and invite war?”
Every noble child learns about the Charter practically from birth. After centuries of wars between cousins, of thrones being usurped by other branches of the same family tree, the royal families came together and agreed: only eldest royal children would enter marriages that could produce children of their own. Alliances between kingdoms would be secured by same-sex unions instead; unions that could not produce potential rivals for their siblings’ thrones.
It should be an arrangement that still allows for plenty of choice—except for the last thirty years, kingdom after kingdom has produced younger sisters as far as the eye can see.
Even Nora has admitted that the statistical likelihood of Alex and Henry being the only royal male younger siblings on the whole continent is vanishingly small, and yet here they are. In the two hundred odd years the Charter has been in place, it’s never happened; it’s just Alex’s luck that it’s happening now, to him.

WIP Posting Pondering (arranged marriage edition)
So, I wrote the first of three chapters of the arranged marriage fic in a three-day fever dream, and it’s currently in the capable hands of @ships-to-sail and @celeritas2997 for betaing/picking apart/etc while @clottedcreamfudge has already shrieked significantly.
But I’m in a weird headspace at the moment, and I have this sneaking suspicion based on, like, who I am as a person that the best way through it is external validation. Don’t psychoanalyse me lol.
Again, I wrote 6000 words of this in three days, so y’all are hardly going to be left hanging for any extended period of time. I know exactly what’s happening in this story, I just have to actually WRITE it. But I’ve literally never posted a WIP, even a little baby three-chapter WIP, without a set posting schedule before — so here I am, outsourcing my decisions.

Yes! I posted some unavoidable exposition as part of a six sentence Sunday a few weeks back (world building is my arch-nemesis as a writer lol) but I am gonna say this one isn't quite what it seems on the surface lol.
His mom sighs. “I still think, given time and proximity, the two of you could learn to love each other.” She raises a hand to cut Alex’s retort off before he even opens his mouth. “Failing that, though… focus on the good you can do, as a Prince Consort of Windsor. Think of the people you can help.”

2. Which of your WIPs is currently the longest?
The way we get into each other's bones [Angstapalooza RWRB Edition]
3. Which WIP do you expect will end up the longest?
The Last Five Years || The Next Five Years - it's designed as a duology, so idk if each individual fic will beat out angstapalooza, but the duo definitely will, and y'all will want to read them together (unless you love pain I guess??)
4. Which WIP is your favourite to write/the most enjoyable to write? Why?
It changes day to day but right now I have @clottedcreamfudge going fucking feral at me over [Hockey bf Henry] at any given hour of the day which definitely makes it really fun to just... write a snippet and immediately be shrieked at.
5. Which WIP do you find the most intimidating to write? Why?
For some unknown reason, Years of dreams just can't be wrong which is the Anastasia AU?? I don't know why it's fucking with me so much, but it's very rude actually.
6. Which WIP do you experience the most self-doubt about. Why?
The way we get into each other's bones [Angstapalooza RWRB Edition] -- it's gonna be a balancing act in terms of not being gratuitous emotional pain etc
7. Which of your WIPs will you seek out a beta/sensitivity reader for? Why?
The long ones: The way we get into each other's bones [Angstapalooza RWRB Edition], The Last Five Years || The Next Five Years, [Leverage AU]. Maybe a few of the others depending on how the plot spins out.
8. Have any of your WIPs been struck by the curse of writer's block?

9. Which WIP has your favourite OC? Tell us about them?
[Rafael prequel] is the only one that has any OC of substance right now lol

In terms of what is actually on the page right now, not what is planned to be written, it might actually be [Henry writes] right now.

The way we get into each other's bones [Angstapalooza RWRB Edition], though Years of dreams just can't be wrong has given it a surprising run for its money.
15. Which WIP do you have the highest expectations for? Why?
The way we get into each other's bones [Angstapalooza RWRB Edition] -- I wrote a fic lovingly deemed angstapalooza for another fandom and people collectively lost their shit over it, so... idk I guess y'all love pain???
16. Do you dream about any of your WIPs?
Yes. And then I wake up and can't remember enough to write it down and then I cry.
17. Do any of your WIPs have particular complexities that your other fics don't?
Oh for sure! The Last Five Years || The Next Five Years has the non-chronological chapter order baked into the format, so making sure the chronology is right and that readers can follow where we're at is a complexity. [horny soulmates] has one of those worldbuilding things where the less thought you put into it as a reader the better because otherwise it's a Problem so trying to make sure it makes sense without being horrifying if you think about the real world implications is a balance lmao. What's left of me in our little vignette has some time-related fuckery. [Orpheus and Eurydice] is written in verse, so. You know.
18. Which WIP is the funniest or has the most humour?
In terms of what's actually written right now, probably Hold up, rewind, knock me off of my feet? But I like to think they're all funny lol.
19. Do any of your WIPs contain outside POVs or a deep dive on a character other than the main ship? How are you finding that process?
[Henry/Alex/Liam/Spencer] runs through all four listed POVs which is fun and also requires a lot of pondering about whose POV we have when for maximum impact. [Rafael prequel], Rafael is surrounded by disaster queers [Actor AU verse], Secret Agent Raf 5+1 [Actor AU verse] are all Rafael POV, but the latter two are actor AU verse so I have a bit more leeway -- the first one is is canon compliant, though, so teasing out the little info we get about him and building the timeline is a beast of a job. [Shaan/Zahra] is fully epistolary so doesn't technically have a POV I guess.
20. Tell us one thing we don't know about one or more of your WIPs.
The way we get into each other's bones [Angstapalooza RWRB Edition] is a prologue + 10 chapters and all those chapters are titled already lol, because I've never approached something in a normal order in my life.
