“Is anyone out there?”
https://youtu.be/wKFfM294M0s A beautiful song for a beautifully written visual novel. Now why I am I bringing up this song? Well personally it has been six years since I have read Ametarasu's fan translation of the Visual Novel Cross † Channel, so I figured it was due time to replay the game! Cross † Channel was an adult visual novel (meaning that there are H-scenes) that was written by Romeo Tanaka and released in Japan in 2003.  For some of the more casual people out there Romeo Tanaka's style of writing is poetic and brilliant within all of the scenarios that he writes.  One scene can be written in a way that seems normal, but after reaching the end of the story you realize that there were deeper meanings withing each scene creating a possibility that a re-reading of the story that much more interesting and not the same experience that you had the first time through.  Tanaka is great with his word-play, but unfortunately it gets lost in translations.  I'd still recommend the game for people to play through if they have the chance despite the translation's downsides. By the way, before you delve further I'm going to say right now that this is not a review.  Though I do plan to do one once I finish rereading it. Description
Gunjo Gakuen (Deep Blue School) is a facility designed to gather and isolate those students with a high adaptation coefficient (indicating that the student is less likely to be able to adapt to society), determined from an adaptation exam mandated by the government. After a failed summer vacation with other members of the school's broadcasting club, Taichi Kurosu and some of the other club members return to the city, only to find that all living creatures within it except for the club members have completely vanished. (Credits go to Wikipedia for this as well as the next section) Characters Taichi Kurosu: The Protagonist He calls himself “The Love Aristocrat”. He is also a pervert Miki Yamanobe: A girl with cheerful character and humble breasts.  Taichi jokes about her being his pupil in perversion.  Sometimes cruel but is funloving. Kiri Sakura: A squeamish, untrusting girl who hates and fears Taichi. Good friend of Miki, but clingy. Kiri and Miki are nicknamed “the flowers” by Taichi because they seem to be “two flowers from the same pot.” Misato Miyasumi: a girl with glasses and large breasts. She is the president of the broadcasting club. Her exam score is never revealed, but Taichi does note her engaging in severe self-destructive behavior from time to time, which would put her at least above 30. She refers to Taichi as "Peke-kun". Touko Kirihara: a girl descended from a samurai clan. "Kirihara" is an anagram of Harakiri, which Taichi sometimes uses as her nickname. Youko Hasekura: She's always monitoring Taichi. She is very devoted to Taichi, sometimes to the point of stalking him, but he for the most part ignores her. Nanaka: a mysterious girl who wears a school uniform different from that of Gunjo Gakuen. She always suddenly appears or disappears in front of Taichi without warning, usually by violently crashing into him on her bike. Who is Romeo Tanaka? Oddly enough not a lot of western weebs know the name Romeo Tanaka.  First of all I have to say, “Filthy casuals”.  People in the west rave about other writers in the Visual novel world, and yes they are great writers as well but some get more credit more than others.  Before I go into a rant, I should give examples of the works that Romeo Tanaka has written and/or a hand in, that people could recognize.  I won't go into details about plot about other works since this is supposed to be more focused on Cross † Channel. Jinrui Wa Suitai Shimashita (Humanity Has Declined) A light novel that Romeo Tanaka started writing that started its run around 2007 or so.  An anime adaptation aired in Japan July 2, 2012 to September 17, 2012. Kana ~ Imouto (Kana: Little Sister) - D.O An Eroge that was released in 1999 that had multiple endings, and yes it is incestuous, but still a good read for those who can look past that bit.  Fun fact, Romeo Tanaka wrote the scenario for this eroge under pseudonym Yamada Hajime. Yume Miru Kusuri: A Drug That Makes You Dream - Ruf Another Eroge that Romeo Tanaka wrote, and my god was this game a trip. Released in Japan 2005 and in America sometime in 2007. Those are just a few of the ones that I have read/watched that I figured others would be able to recognize, but if you don't even know any of those titles it's okay! Visual novels and eroges are not something that everyone really dabbles in. But here's a kicker title that may do the trick: Rewrite -VisualArts/Key No? Don't know what this visual novel is?  Well have you at least heard of VisualArts/Key? No?  Well they are responsible for works such as Air, Kanon, Clannad, Angel Beats, and Little Busters!.  Anyways Romeo Tanaka did not have a hand in those other works, but he did do the scenario writing for Rewrite.  If you haven't read this visual novel then you are missing out!  Tanaka wrote the main scenario, Moon route, Terra route, bonus Oppai route, and two of the heroines (Kotori and Akane)'s routes. Okay, so what? For those who have read, or know of the titles I had mentioned up above, you can get a picture of Romeo Tanaka's writing style. Stories that typically make you think, stories that take you out of your comfort zone but teaches you values and lessons that tend to be taken for granted.  Depressing at times, but not without any context.  It's pretty hard describing whilst tiptoeing around eggshells being careful not to spoil anything. Some of you may be thinking, “Why are you replaying a visual novel you already finished?”.  To be honest it's been so long that most of the story is murky in my memory.  I read this visual novel back in 2009 fresh out of high school, and frankly there were just some metaphors, and symbolism that went over my head back then.  Reading it again six years later gives me a chance to read this with a different outlook than I did back then.  I feel that the experience will hit my feels more strongly to the point of making me bawl my eyes out! All in all, I really recommend this visual novel for those who have not read it.  I wished that I can experience it as if it were my first time reading it, because the shock factor is mind blowing!  Trust me, you won't be disappointed! “See you next week.”
