I just read a very passionate rant about how even the tiniest amount of fanservice will ruin an anime... And I mean, 1) I don't agree with that as, like, a blanket statement. But 2) I have absolutely run into shows where my overall opinion definitely got downgraded a bit because the women were treated like sex objects first and whatever role they were actually supposed to play in the story second.

I've found that sometimes it really has to be taken on a character-to-character basis for me. ...And I'm back on my Yu-Gi-Oh! kick, so that's what you're getting today.

Let's take Mai Valentine from the first season. She could walk around in nothing but a bra, and I probably wouldn't think too much of it. Because she's a confident adult who feels entirely in control of her own sexuality.

But then you've got someone like Aki from 5ds... Whose design is hitting a little different now that I'm a little older while I'm watching it. When you realize she's only 16, and she's meant to be seen as a vulnerable child. Her whole story is about how she's being taken advantage of by an older man when her parents made her feel like she had no one else to turn to.

I'm just saying, in that case, the decision to design her with the huge boobs and the low-cut dress to show them off... Somebody purposely designed her that way. And that's kind of uncomfortable.

So I normally don't post my NGS stuff in here and in fact, i need to post more on my ngs alt. . . but I made a Lester cosplay in there (with a lot of difficulty) that I wanted to show off. It's very hard to get his outfit and hair accurate, so all of this is approximation. I also lack a necklace that even remotely resembles his, but. Close enough.

He sees his jacket around town sometimes. It usually takes him a second to realize it; the references of his friends he knows in an instant. The white jackets and brown vests immediately make him smile. The duos that hold hands, pretending to be twins, bring him to chuckle. The flashes of red worn in confidence stoke an ember of pride. But it takes him a second or two to realize what the orange flashes on blue mean. He's hardly worth imitation, with his friends out there to chase. But he's not upset. The smile they always share with their friends is the most accurate of all.
