Strange Ranger - “She’s On Fire”
Tumblr media
Earth, Strange Ranger has left you. Amorphous in their designs of alternative rock and experimental electronic departures of physical matter, the Philly four-piece are fully engulfed by their own desires to be of a sensation beyond what they’ve already created with “She’s On Fire”, the second single from their newly-announced album, Pure Music. Vocalist and guitarist Isaac Eiger, vocalist and synthesist Fiona Woodman, bassist Nathan Tucker, and drummer Fred Nixon form as one bond of electricity that burns to its hottest point, metaphorically doubling as the embodiment of a common perception we have in this lifetime: That enlightenment is a due given, eventually. The source of ignition is surely there, with its early chemical reaction -- an arpeggio synthesis of cosmic energy feeding its way through human synapses and accordant post-punk guitars -- converges to create one galaxy brain realization upon reaching climax. Though, it’s not what it seemed. “I would have thought the rhythm of the club might lead me somewhere,” Eiger and Woodman’s breaths press their way together. It’s a new level, but only one that begets the knowledge that there will always been another one to come.

Isaac Dunbar Reinvents Himself on “Bleach”
Tumblr media
Photo: Yulissa Benitez
When thinking about the next generation’s musical visionaries, Isaac Dunbar readily springs to mind. While most artists resorted to canceling tours and postponing events in the last year-and-a-half, Dunbar’s listenership skyrocketed during the pandemic. The singer-songwriter and producer’s latest single “Bleach” marks a new era for the Massachusetts-born artist. While his past releases, such as “fan behavior” and “onion boy,” showcased the more eccentric and innovative production side of his music, “Bleach” offers a new perspective to his sonic growth, drawing attention to Dunbar’s wide vocal ability and range.
Dunbar’s self-written and self-produced track showcases the range of musical talent that the 18-year-old has to offer. The track’s verses explore the depth of his vocals, which is contrasted by the experimental bridge that illustrates his ability to use production to elevate his art. To pair with his vocals and production, Dunbar’s lyrics are equally as explosive and biting. He sings, “I left my lover / I’m a classic sign of self sabotage / a monster dressed in your mirage / once I said I loved you / I ran away.”
Leaning into themes of teenage rebellion, Dunbar is able to connect with his listeners while finding the space to reinvent himself. “‘Bleach’ feels as though it’s my first single. I’ve taken a lot of time to hibernate and cultivate my sound these past couple of months, now I’m finally ready to let everyone into my world,” shares Dunbar.
Pioneering a new genre that draws inspiration from polarized genres such as Broadway and EDM, Dunbar explores new territory on Bleach.” His single is a pop explosion that is so convincing that it might spur forth the spontaneous desire to bleach your hair.

Strange Ranger - “Rain So Hard”
Tumblr media
Loneliness, when magnified, trips the headspace, especially within the throes of it arriving in the middle of a post-relationship maelstrom. Baring the weather of it all are Strange Ranger on their new single “Rain So Hard”, a track written in the foreground of the demise of vocalists Isaac Eiger and Fiona Demise’s own breakup, where the Philly post-indie rock band sonically delve into every prismatic accord they’ve set forth thus far in tandem with deep-diving exploration on solitude stasis. As one point, Eiger declares, “Any day there’ll be no more stars” and in another, “Now everything just runs backwards / And forwards all the time.” It’s heavy-weight existentialism, yet the soundscape Strange Ranger prop the still body over a blur of fast-moving surroundings syncs to its emotions with slow-exploding cosmic synths, fragmented glitches, and guitar electricity when realization clicks. “How do I get out of this movie now?” Hyperaware of everything all at once, the listen translates to that critical step in moving forward even when you need to let the lows sink in.
