SPN 300 Spec, or, The Case for John Winchester

From the EW promos that have been going around today for the 300th episode, it seems like John is going to come back either as a dream sequence, an alternate reality, or some sort of alternate timeline to their own.

It’s no secret I’m not exactly a big John Winchester fan. But I recognize that there are certainly a lot of shades of grey with his character, and I understand that he has a close personal friendship with J2 that affords a bit of character bleed. John is an incredibly divisive character though. Some people love him, but I know many of you are also none too thrilled at the prospect of him coming back and getting some kind of redemption arc.

Here’s how I would like to see it play out, and its something that I think would hopefully appease both camps of people when it comes to the show and its depiction of John:

An alternate timeline where John didn’t die, and Dean didn’t go to hell.

On the surface, everything is kind of wonderful, in as much as Dean would see it that way. Dabb calls it “a place of want” from Dean. And to go on a bit of a tangent here, if you’re worried about them giving John a redemptive arc, consider this: to be offered redemption implies you’ve done something in need of forgiveness, and that in itself is a certain acknowledgement of John’s past actions on the part of the show. Consider also that family is an incredibly complicated thing and although Dean may react with happiness to seeing John, we’ve been shown repeatedly that Dean has a lot of blind spots when it comes to the people he loves. He’s done so with Sam, Cas, Mary, and Crowley before. Heck, he’s done it with John before too. Remember how he imagined Mary as a pie baking housewife and was startled to instead encounter a kickass hunter who brought home takeout because she didn’t know how to cook? Dean reacting with happiness to having John back doesn’t inherently invalidate John’s actions and the things he’s done.

But moving on. The boys get both their dad back, and Mary gets her husband back. We get the heartfelt reunion, the embraces, the tearful apologies. And yes, the redemption of past wrongs.

But then, as suggested in the promos, the reunion is short lived because “as with any altered reality, not everything changes for the good.” We know Zachariah’s back and it sounds like we’re getting OG Cas as well in as much as he’s a “different though not entirely unfamiliar version of himself.” And if John lived and Dean never went to hell, then Dean never met Cas. Dean, so quick to assume personal responsibility for everything, has no doubt spent the past decade watching Cas evolve from the bad-ass angel he first met and worried himself sick over having been the one to screw him up. He’ll get a chance to see what Cas would look like if Dean hadn’t happened to him and be confronted with the reality that maybe he didn’t break Cas after all. Maybe he’s the best thing that’s ever happened to him. (Side note: this is everything I wanted with apocalypse world Castiel but cruelly, Dean never got to see him.)

I think/hope Cas will be key, if not overtly then definitely in the subtext. Because in the end, they’ll have to say goodbye to John in order to set their world right again and get their Cas back, effectively cementing the theme of found family. I’m certain it will be sad, and hard for the boys to say goodbye, but also exactly the sort of closure they so desperately need. And think what you will about John Winchester, these boys need closure and the narrative needs to come back full circle from where they started out. And Dabb… certainly likes his circles.

Assigned to oversee a concentration camp of humans run by Raphael and Apocalypse Castiel, Hannah developed a compassion for the humans that were being abused by the angels so she began helping them escape and secretly assisting Charlie’s resistance.

Timeline AUs: A number of period drama AUs in which Hannah and Castiel are both human and living in various points in time from Ancient times to the 1960s.

Caroline Johnson: A verse about Caroline Johnson’s life post Hannah as she struggles with PTSD, mental problems, and homelessness.

She excelled in the program but when she got to the test requiring her to kill her classmate, she refused. She washed out of the program and Lady Toni Bevell took her place. Bevell is her rival and she may have had past relations with Ketch as the three of them were all in the program together.

Apocalypse world Eileen spent time in a human concentration camp run by angels after the apocalypse.

High school or College Eileen Eileen goes to school with Sam or Gabriel. If in college, she is majoring in anthropology.

She was taken in by an elderly aboriginal man who retrained her as a hunter. Later on, she was bitten by a vampire and turned, but she has vowed to never take a human life. Options for canon seasons are seasons 8-14, with 14 being the default.

Jonah verse: Back story same as main verse, but always begins in season 8 and is in conjunction with Eileen and Hannah.

College or High school Jo: Any college verses involve Jo majoring in criminology.

Season three Jo: Jo was MIA during season three of Supernatural, she was traveling the country continuing her training as a hunter, this is her story.

Apocalypse Jo: Jo tried her best to stop the apocalypse, but, along with Charlie, she helped lead the resistance against the angels.
