This is not a place of honor.

(Nominative/base, accusative, dative, comitative, benefactive, and both possessives)

That's one of three gendered persons complete. In the tenseless variants, because I am still intending to mark tense directly on the pronouns somehow.

...by the time this conlang is done, I'm never going to want to work with a table again.

I'll not include an example for every form, just touch on examples of every gender, because no one wants me to write out sentences for each of twenty-eight pronoun forms, least of all myself.

The "divergent" gender has a couple different use cases—most stringently, it refers to an instance where there's a duplicate of you that used to be you, but you won't become them—i.e., the point of divergence is in your future. More lenient interpretations would allow you to use it even when the divergence is in your past, so long as you still think of yourself (or they think of you) as the "past version" of the other.

1.5th-person pronouns in use:

ok so all september I was sitting at home job searching and basically doing shit all and then about a week ago I got a locum (covering someone’s vacation in my actual field), working an (temp) office job (for election) and got put on this really cool research project.

and basically I’m supposed to email the head dr a bunch of background info by the end of the month and I started it today (lol @ me putting in 30 min work) and its not as straightforward as I thought?! and I’m running out of time to do it because I’ve basically been working full time at the other two places....(catch me working from 8:30am till prob 10 or 11 tomorrow). so yeah

Conlang Year Days 39 & 40

The past two days were set aside to figure out the syntactic alignment and basic sentence structure of the conlang. I've been doing a little bit of thinking about the grammar, but this actually wasn't a part of that. Even so, I had a few ideas about what I didn't want:

I'd prefer a more common word order over a less common one. No sense going for something like OSV—I'd just be making things more difficult for myself in a way that isn't fun at the moment.

SOV was out from the start. My previous, most developed, and possibly only preexisting decent conlang, Yvelse, uses SOV, and I didn't want to do the same thing twice in a row.

I'm always a little wary about defaulting to SVO, English being my first language and all. I probably don't need to be, but I am.

With that in mind, I had a few ideas. I could just go with SVO. I could have different word orders for different circumstances, like how some languages move the verb in questions. I even played with the idea of having SVO and OVS being equally valid structures, with subject and object markings to indicate which is being used. A verb-first ordering might also be nice to have, given my... other intentions for this language. Get the chonky, information-laden part of the sentence out of the way upfront.

And that's not even getting into syntactic alignment. Nothing wrong with nominative-accusative—even though I also used it in Yvelse, I still don't have any qualms against doing that twice in a row. Actually, I didn't really spend time considering much else—I was between that and tripartite alignment, and I wasn't seriously considering the latter.

Then there's how to mark them. In the natural languages I'm familiar with, nouns don't get marked for all that much. It's the pronouns that get tangled up in alignment—and, given that this conlang is going to have seven grammatical persons and either four or five genders plus a null gender (the former of which apply to three persons and the latter of which applies universally and exclusively to the other four), that's a lot of pronouns. Maybe tripartite isn't such a good idea.

(I'm going to have tables for days when I get to this part of construction. When are the Conlang Year Pronoun Days? I'm wondering if I should maybe plan ahead if only to block out a few hours on those days to descend into the pits of Pronoun Tartarus.)

I could also make use of affixes or the like. Yvelse used prefixes for direct and indirect objects, and I'm currently learning a (natural) language that uses postpositions for... basically everything, so I already know I've got options there.

There was a brief moment (I say brief... I postponed this post by half a day because I wanted to sleep on the idea) where I considered animacy-based word order and went so far as to write a whole list for that (which has since been moved to a new section of the doc entitled Cryogenic Freezer just in case I ever want to dust it off and put it somewhere else), but in the end I went with something more simple.

Sentence structure is VSO. After the object, other nouns such as location and instrument can be introduced, and these don't have a set order. I'm planning to have the role of each noun marked by an adposition which can optionally also encode subjective tense—allowing me to mark subjective tense for everything that partakes in a sentence equally.

I've tested out this system on a few sentences. They're pretty barren without anything to mark tense or role, but I feel they work well (and you'll notice that siza, the word for "humanoid" from a while back, has been redefined to "person" as its primary definition):

Zasi siza zacio. [repair person time machine] A person repairs a time machine.

Zono kota denege. [kill poisonous plant songbird] The poisonous plant kills a (small) bird.

Zuga zasi. [err person] A person makes a mistake.

Nai dato. [exist rain] It is raining.

You can also make sentences that involve arguments beyond subject and object, like so:

Kai siza gate gai. [give person gamebird grain] The person gives the (large) bird some grain.

Nai lokodo lepito. [exist earthquake coastline] There is an earthquake at the coastline.

Zono siza kadou kijao tanu. [kill person herbivore fire valley] A person kills an animal with fire in the valley.

Still debating about where definiteness should be marked. At least everything has a concrete form now.

Number

Number is marked at the end of a noun. The singular form of a noun is left unmodified.

The plural form of a noun is determined by repeating the final syllable of that noun. This process was integrated into the noun before Stage 2 sound changes, so some plural forms may appear to follow different rules:

*technically, the direct translation of sogei is "limbless creature." This covers worms, snakes, grubs, caecilians, and anything else with such a body plan.

Nouns that are by default mass nouns, such as gai (grain) and dato (precipitation) do not take on a plural form unless referring to a group of distinct parts or units: gaiji means multiple grains, datoto means multiple raindrops (etc.), kijaolo means multiple fires, etc. They do, however, take plural versions of definiteness markers.

The general form of a noun is formed by adding the suffix -li. This is distinguishable from words which are pluralized with a final syllable li at the next stage of noun-marking...

Definiteness

There are four definiteness markers. These exist as a separate word directly before the noun.

La: Indefinite singular Ki: Indefinite plural Ja: Definite singular Jia: Definite plural

All singular and plural nouns must take a definiteness marker. General nouns do not.

Returning to the note on mass nouns earlier, some nouns that would not normally be mass nouns may be treated as such in certain contexts. Usually, this would be interpreted as referring to the substance of that noun—just as in English, you may say "I'm eating a chicken" or "I'm eating chicken," you may say tei ne la denege or tei ne ki denege to the same end* (any future verb inflections notwithstanding).

*technically denege is most easily translated to "gamebird" but just means "large bird" and doesn't even have to mean a bird, simply something that flies or is in a category of flying creatures. Turkeys are denegege. Peacocks are denegege. Emus are denegege. Bats from the timeline where bats get as large as medium-sized dogs are denegege. Wyverns could be denegege, but napa (large carnivore) is probably more relevant. I'm going to stop talking now before this footnote gets out of hand.

Case

A noun phrase always begins with a case particle. Eventually, this particle will be inflected (ideally in a confusing fusional manner) for tense, but for now only the tenseless particles exist.

Nominative: tio Accusative: ne Dative: ka Instrumental: kao Comitative: no Benefactive: dei Locative: dio Inessive: kui Adessive: se Ablative: da Allative: sou Perlative: ki

Example forms:

In a house: kui la mijei From the house: da ja mijei Through the houses: ki jia mijeije With some dogs*: no ki mienana Near a tree: se la jumini To the time machine: sou ja zacio To the time machines: sou jia zaciolo

*translates more accurately to "companion animal" or "pet" etc. I'm going to stop making these clarifications now and you can figure them out as they crop up in the future.
