Genshin Impact wildlife vs. the real-life creatures that inspired them: Weasel Thieves
Only two of the real-life animals that inspired the Weasel Thieves are technically true weasels, these being the Siberian weasel and the stoat (also known as the short-tailed weasel). The others are closely related members of the mustelid family except for the red-tailed vontsira, which is a euplerid.
Black-footed ferrets are also known as American polecats. They were once thought to be extinct in the wild, but a residual population was discovered, and captive breeding programs have since led to their slow re-introduction back into the the wild. They are still considered endangered.
The origin of the name “Polecat” is debated, but it may be derived from the Old English colloquial name for the animal, “foul cat”, after the distinct odor of their skunk-like musk. These are the ancestral cousins from which originated the domestic ferret.
Siberian weasels, also known as kolonok, is viewed in Chinese folklore as a wandering spirit (shen) that can steal and replace people's souls. Their orange fur is used to create ink brushes for calligraphers. The brushes are called “wolf-hair brushes” after the Chinese common name for the weasel: 黃鼠狼 - "yellow rat wolf", with “wolf” referring to the animals’ incredible ferocity.
The red-tailed vontsira was formerly referred to as the red-tailed mongoose, but modern scientists have found them to be more closely related to fossas than mongooses. They are not related to weasels at all, but their scientific name, Galidia, means "little weasel" in Greek.
The term ‘ermine’ is used to refer to the stoat’s white winter coat; in warmer seasons they are reddish-brown, but keep their distinctive black tail-tip year round. In North America they are called short-tailed weasels.

hello guys! i just wanted to jot down a little itinerary here for those who are waiting on various requests to be filled! this week has been busier than i anticipated so i’m a bit behind but it shouldn’t take me long to get caught up!
i’m hoping to get the next round of sketch requests done tomorrow; if not i’ll switch to digital to finish them over the weekend
i HAVE played the update; i’m still editing screenshots and gifs but when they do go up they’ll be at the tail end of the queue so they won’t show up for at least a few weeks so as to avoid spoiling anything for those who haven’t played it yet
i’m going to try getting cutscene screenshot requests edited tonight so they can be up by tomorrow
for the record, the request box for both reference shots and my own sketches is still open, just please be aware it might take me a little while to get them up. thank you for your patience in the meantime!

[EDIT] as some of you may have noticed, this is actually Rhodeia, the Oceanid, and NOT Rhodonia, a fungal genus in the family Fomitopsidaceae, as i had accidentally mislabeled her.
pro tip: don’t watch nature documentaries while typing :/
