Prompt # 12 Favorite Parallel: Pete and Porsche

Both of them are goofy okay, and I think genuinely cheerful/happy most of the time, but it’s an attitude born out of necessity because of their childhoods., but still, they both chose to go through life with a smile. Both of them hold a lot inside while putting on a happy face, and they understand that about each other. 

Both are bodyguards who accidentally fall in love with Theerpanyakuls while handcuffed and in isolation.  

Both support each other’s fucked up situationship by helping their respective Mafia princes find and talk to them. Albeit with very different attitudes. 

But I think the parallels between them that strike me the most are how much they need to be needed, and how willing they are to give up everything once they are.

For Porsche, he feels like his only purpose is to protect and care for someone. First Chay and then Kinn as well. 

And Pete needs to be seen, known, and important to somebody.

Ultimately, they both wind up with men who don’t deserve them

but who do need them more than anything. 

A certain bunch of us celebrate the character that will burn down the world for love, but I think the character that will blow up their own world for love deserves just as much consideration (cause look, setting fire to things is easy, locking yourself in a cage with someone who can’t get free so they won’t be alone, isn’t.)

The show gives us two of them in Porsche and Pete, each on a perilous, parallel journey to a happily ever after much closer to the real fairy tales than the Disney version.

I have a question for the fanfic writers among you: How do you treat your work in progress when a very similar story is put out there? Do you go on writing - in the spirit that everything is unique in its own way - or do you abandon the piece - in the spirit of preventing 'superfluous' contributions?

Let's add a further wrench into the process by saying the recently published work by another author, so similar to your own, seems so much better written than your own (granted we are always our own worst critics). Where do you go with that?

Maybe this is a question for readers, too. Do you mind reading similar works/story lines?

#i feel like this is based on the (I think) incorrect assumptions that just because two people are writing for the same trope / prompt / idea #that the end result would be almost the same #when I don't really think that that's ever the case #like I've read some tropes a hundred or even a thousand times over by now and never have I thought “oh that's so similar to that other fic #I've read so there's no point reading this now“ #like has anyone ever thought that?? #so no I wouldn't abandon a fic just because someone else wrote one with a similar premise for the same fandom. #because our individual takes on the premise as well as our writing styles etc would still be so different from each other #also in my experience fic idea lodge themselves in my mind until i need to write them down to stop obsessing over them #so unless reading someone else's fic on that premise somehow makes me less inspired for my own fic idea (rather than more) #there's no reason not to finish that fic #polls #writing #fanfiction

While I really hate the narrative of "tech bros" because of how it conflates shitty CEOs with non-shitty base-level programmers, and how it conflates Dunning-Kruger-y early adopters with people who Know Their Shit about computers...

...On the AI art issue, I will say, there is probably a legit a culture clash between people who primarily specialize in programming and people who primarily specialize in art.

Because, like, while in the experience of modern working illustrators a free commons has ended up representing a Hobbseyan experience of "a war of all against all" that's a constant threat to making a living, in software from what I can tell it's kinda been the reverse.

IE, freedom of access to shared code/information has kinda been seen as A Vital Thing wrt people's abilities to do their job at a core level. So, naturally, there's going to be some very different reactions to the morality of scraped data online.

And, it's probably the same reason that a lot of the creative commons movement came from the free software movement.

And while I agree a lot with the core principles of these movements, it's also probably unfortunately why they so often come off as tone-deaf and haven't really made that proper breakthrough wrt fighting against copyright bloat.

It also really doesn't help that, in terms of treatment by capital, for most of our lives programmers have been Mother's Special Little Boy whereas artists (especially online independent artists post '08 crash) have been treated as The Ratboy We Keep In The Basement And Throw Scraps To.

So, it make sense the latter would have resentment wrt the former...

Out of the lineup of GMMTVs 2024 Part 1 & 2 series I have my top 14 series I really want to watch - so here are those 14 in order from my least to most excited for.

14. Scarlet Heart Thailand

A girl falls back though time where she meets several princes. I haven’t seen any adaptations of this story so I really don’t know know what to expect. This is a ridiculously talented cast and I’m sure it will be a brilliant drama. Win and Tu are gonna be fantastic together as leads and I can’t wait to see Fourth here too!

13. The Dark Dice

A group of students get trapped inside a world of games, the only way for them to get out is to win! Everyone’s Gemini and Prim predictions were right! It’s really Geminis first project without Fourth! This series looks dark but also really compelling - I can’t wait to see the different games through out the series’s. If this gets a good budget it’ll be something truly special!

12. Revamp the Undead Story (B.L)

An man awakens a powerful being, which introduces him to the world of vampires, where he falls in love with the one he woke up. I like this trailer even more than the og. Of the 2 GMMTV vampire series I am more excited for this as it seems less campy. I’m also just so happy to see my fave Santa back on screen! The plot still isn’t 100% clear, but I’m excited to see if New can step up his directing/writing game here.

11. Perfect 10 Liners (B.L)

3 couples, 30 episodes, 10 episodes per couple! And we are back in the world of uni engineering! 1st couple: ForceBook enemies to lovers - I don’t love their series they’re never my favourite. 2nd couple: PerthChimon with a roommates storyline - I want to give them another chance, I hope this is good! 3rd couple: JuniorMark with a “practice dating with me” plot - I’m sooo excited for their part the story looks adorable and I love them so much!

10. Us (G.L)

A girl is in love with her brothers girlfriend, when they break up to two girls fall in love. This is the G.L I’ve been waiting for! I’m so ready for a love story filled with longing, yearning and angst, especially when the chemistry is this good! Emi is always a great actress and I have so much love for Sing (even when he’s the villain) - this is also shot so beautifully! I’m ready and I need it now!

9. The Trainee 48k (B.L)

A group of people in their 20s enter into the workforce and strive to find themselves and achieve their dreams. An OffGun B.L 2 years in a row!? I never expected this and it looks so so good. This cast has so many of my GMMTV favourites, but it also looks like a story I’m going to really emotionally relate to.

8. Sweet Tooth Good Dentis (B.L)

A food live streamer goes to a university student dentist, they continue to meet and fall in love. MARK IS A BL LEAD! Finally! And I feel like Ohm really works as his partner. There wasn’t too much of a plot in the trailer so I don’t know what to except, but it looks sweet, it’s based on a JittiRain novel and is directed by one of the KinnPorsche directors. I hope this is as good as Mark deserves!

7. Ossans Love Thailand (B.L)

An adaptation of the popular jdrama about an office worker who discovers his friend and boss are both in love with him. I looove EarthMix so much, but this isn’t higher on my list because I never managed to finish the jdrama. BUT this trailer was so funny, it has a good director and I’m thrilled to see Earth in such a comedic role. And of course I shouldn’t be worried - EarthMix’s chemistry can make any series amazing!

6. Enigma 2

Ajin goes undercover again using his magical abilities to fight black magic and uncover the dark mystery that is Enigma. Series 1 of Enigma was a total masterpiece. Win was born to play this role and the direction and cinematography were so original and engaging. I am really excited to see where Ajin will go undercover this time for series 2.

5. Wandee Goodday (B.L)

A boxer and a med student go from strangers to friends with benefits to fake boyfriends to more? I was expecting Inn to star in a BL but I wasn’t expecting Great to be his partner, but it makes so much sense. Both their trailers were overflowing with insane chemistry. But I’ve never loved any of this directors previous series. I really hope this changes that because these 2 on screen are electric.

4. The Heart Killers (B.L)

The police convince a tattoo artist to investigate 2 brothers who may be assassins, but he starts to fall in love with one of them, whilst his friend starts to fall for the other. Of course FirstKhao finally get a romcom and it’s about assassins! I’m a huge fan of them and they really suit these roles. I’m happy JoongDunk are the other couple, they have great chemistry, but never have been given a good plot! I’m excited! The

3. Only Boo (B.L)

A boy that dreams of being an idol is made to transfer to a school in the country and falls for a food seller there. I fell in love with the adorable pilot trailer, but now the series is airing it’s even better than I even expected. Their chemistry is ridiculously cute. This series is hilarious, but it’s also about chasing your dreams and finding someone who supports those dreams. I’m in love!

2. Thame Po Heart that Skips a Beat (B.L)

This is the story of a man hired to film a idol groups final performances as they prepare to disband, but the groups leader and him fall in love. I’m obsessed with this plot and I was not expecting this paring AT ALL! I never thought William would lead a BL. Also how did him and Est have the best chemistry of all the trailers!? Also it was shot so beautifully - I can see this becoming an all time favourite for me!

1. My Love Mix Up (B.L)

An accident involving an eraser leads a boy to mistakenly believe his classmate is in love with him. My adorable, amazing, talented, wonderful sons are back! GeminiFourth! And they are adapting a manga I love. This storyline is going to fit their heart-fluttering chemistry perfectly. And Au is directing them again! I really hope this isn’t the last time we see GeminiFourth as a couple on our screens!

So that’s my list! This is gonna be a crazy year and I’m so excited! Which of GMMTVs lineup are you guys watching? I always get surprised in the end - I ranked My School President at the bottom of my list and it’s one of my all time favourite series now, so even though this is my current list I can’t wait for the surprises!
