There was no better place than the beach. The peaceful atmosphere grew immensely equatorial as the brilliant sun climbed out of the water—before the pristine beach was filled with noisy tourists and familiar locals hoping to catch a wave, their presences filling the landscape in sheer energy. The tranquility of the setting made anyone who stepped foot onto the malleable sand instantly at ease, their troubles drifting away like the loose kelp in the sea.

Six o’clock in the morning, time for the jaded lifeguards to report to their stations. Small wooden towers raised a few feet above the ground, painted a muted viridian, and sprawled across the strip of the beach—each belonging to a unit. Just like they did every early morning, the workers began to group around their specific constructions, ready for their daily duty.

“Gather around,” Oh Sehun, the chief lifeguard, called out, tapping on his clipboard with the tip of a pencil. He watched his group gather around, all but one present. He let out a sigh, far too disappointed this early in the morning. “Where’s Taeyong?”
