What kind of AU (or headcanon) Gasters do you like from the fandom? Like Handplates, Dadster (I thiiiinnnkk you've mentioned that you didn't really like that one?), Goopster(?), Xtale, Gaster is a horse or anything like that?

i’m not very interested in aus at all (and i don’t really know most tbh...) but my absolute favorite portrayal of gaster is basically just him being a grandpa made of slime. conceptually, THAT’S the perfect gaster. i don’t actually dislike dadster though lol—i’m just a firm believer in the superiority of grandpaster and i WILL brawl with any who oppose me.

for real though i think the huge variations of interpretation is one of the most fun things about gaster!! it’s extremely funny to me that you can see him drawn as some cool, sexy, evil chaos god skeleton man with a sexy suit and glasses or whatever, and then immediately the next thing you see is just a pile of goo with a goofy smile. obviously i have a preference for the latter, but if you enjoy slender sexy science skeletons then i mean more power to you. also i have literally never heard of that last one. gaster horse..... frightening.

anyway i think this about sums up my thoughts:

What really makes me curious about Gaster is that everything surrounding this dude is creepy and Bad. creepy theme music, creepy random events, mans got obliterated from reality and someone out there is still holding his face.

HOWEVER

What Mr. Fox has done in Undertale is flip our expectations. Asgore is described as kind, understanding, and “a big, fluffy pushover,” and has a design that’s typically “friendly,” but he’s very much a threat. Literal skeletons, spooky and bad in other games, are the only friends you make that don’t try to kill you. Heck, the game starts with a smiley-faced flower with an annoyingly sunshiny tune distorting into a murderous monster of terror.

So I am very curious as to whether Gaster is actually a harmless guy who just couldn’t help what happened, or if all of this bad stuff is actually telling of his character and he’s sincerely scary and dangerous. To do the former follows the pattern Undertale has established, but to do the latter is a bit of a meta-flip, which would be in line with the coding-exclusive secrets Mr. Fox has left us.
