i keep seeing the hcs (the tim seeing bruce as his son ones) you post and had an idea
so like bruce is like,,, grieving bc sum1 died (who is your choice) and tim js goes back to the behaviors he had when bruce was grieving originally like and every1 is like tim wtf???
i can imagine tim standing off to the side (like a parent watching their kid on a like,, a playground or smth) thinking how heā€™s going 2 drag bruce upstairs to sleep and sum1 (again your choice) comes up and asks ā€œtim why the fuck are you acting this it makes not senseā€
timā€™s like ā€œdonā€™t askā€
srry if was confusing
I completely understood. You're good šŸ‘
However, let's explore the angst potential ~
Bruce and the entire Bat family is grieving the loss of their family member (extra points if it's a pivotal role like Dick or Alfred [everyone would hurt, but the family relies on these people]). Everyone is visibly having a rough time.... except for Tim.
Tim cried when the news came (or when they watched the person die). He cried when his family broke down screaming, begging, and sobbing. He cried when he watched each and every family member lose a vital part of themselves.
And then he stopped. He crammed those pieces of himself together and gathered everyone up. He got them home, and his calm facade hasn't broken since.
It's worse this time around because he knew the person who died personally. He loved Jason and was devastated when he died. However, he didn't know Jason personally. He hadn't had his hair ruffled as the individual gave him a fond smirk. He hadn't been left a steaming mug of coffee as a silent sign of support. He hadn't been pulled into a hug or found himself startled into a laugh. He had never heard his name uttered by the person who died like he did this time.
There's a piece of Tim that died when that family member stopped breathing, but it's okay. He's used to that by now. Bruce and his family need him.
So, Tim gives B sympathetic smiles before shoving him into the batmobile for the car rides that help the man fall asleep. He clicks his tongue as the man comes back with too many injuries. He invokes the sticker charts again and the spray bottle. He ruthlessly utilizes emotional manipulation and sharp words until Bruce stops destroying everything around him (both in the literal and metaphorical sense). He provides Bruce with healthier outlets for his grief.
This time, though? He checks up on the other family members as well. He ensures that no one left in his family is alone. He makes sure that everyone has someone to lean on, that they support each other, and that they don't lash out at each other.
It takes a while, between the waves of grief everyone is drowning under and struggling to find the surface of Tim's efforts get overlooked.
Eventually, when the family starts to heal just a bit more, they notice Tim standing with his hands on his hips as he glares at Bruce.
"Bruce Wayne. If you do not strip off that armor, consume your entire dinner, and get into your bed upstairs, there will be consequences. Do NOT make me count to three."
The other Bats watch as Bruce winces, sighs heavily, and then drags his weary body to the changing room.
Someone points out just how weird that is.
It's the first time in months that the family acts with the chaos it usually has.

my take on the Reverse Robins au
damian - bruce met talia and trained with the LoA a few years before becoming Batman. a couple years into being Batman, talia leaves a 7-8 year old damian on bruceā€™s doorstep. he has to help damian unlearn years of violence and lets him become Batmanā€™s sidekick as an outlet. not sure what his hero name would be yet tbh but iā€™ll probably just go with Batboy. he becomes a vigilante at 9 y/o
duke - heā€™s 10 when his parents are jokerized, and he runs away from foster care. he uses his powers to try and become a vigilante but heā€™s still ten and untrained. batman finds him losing control of his powers and helps him calm down (he works with the justice league, he knows how to deal with super-powered beings). bruce takes him in and while at first damian (14) is wary of being replaced, duke grows on him rather quickly. bruce takes him to the JL and barry & clark help him learn to control his powers. eventually, after being trained by bruce and learning to control his meta abilities, he becomes Signal (at around 13 y/o)
tim - once bruce wayne officially has two kids, the drakes ask him if tim can stay at Wayne Manor whenever theyā€™re out of the country. the boys know each other from galas and get along well, so bruce agrees (he can also tell tim doesnā€™t have very many friends and is quite lonely). so tim ends up spending a lot of time at the Manor and ofc connects the dots of bruce and his kids disappearing whenever Batman and his partners appear. he basically just tells them he knows and asks if he can do anything to help. so they give him access to the Batcomputer and he directs them on missions and helps with cases. he starts staying at Wayne Manor when heā€™s about 10 (damian is 16 and duke is 12) and figures out their identities a year or so later. over comms he goes by ā€˜Tā€™ and later ā€˜Rumorā€™. eventually his parents die in a plane crash and he (15) is officially adopted by bruce
steph - she starts out as Spoiler at 13 (damian is 19, duke is 15, tim is also 13). damian has become his own hero at this point: Leviathan. steph works with Signal the most but will work with Leviathan on occasion. damian is a reluctant older brother figure to her and pretends to find her annoying but is secretly very protective of her. she tended to avoid Batman until damian pestered bruce into reaching out and offering to train her which she happily accepted. when they reveal their identities to her she finally meets tim (who is usually just on comms with them) and befriends him immediately. they become besties and an unstoppable duo
cass - same origin of being raised a weapon and running away. she shows up in gotham one day and stays in hiding for a while before letting Batman see her and confront her. she ends up going home with him and the others just accept that they have a sister now. her and damian are the closest because they understand each other best, but tim is her favorite sibling. she is a few years younger than tim and steph. she is 14 when she arrives in gotham (tim and steph are 16, duke is 18, damian is 22). she goes by Orphan and later Black Bat
jason - same origin of stealing the batmobileā€™s tires at 12. he is three years younger than cass (15). damian (23) has been his own vigilante for years now so jason takes up the Batboy mantle (duke is 19, tim & steph are 17). he is killed by the joker at 15, and returns as Red Hood at 17
dick - same origin of parents death and bruce being at the circus. he is 9, jason is 13, cass is 16, tim & steph are 18, duke is 20, damian is 24. jason and cass are dickā€™s favorite siblings (and the only ones who still live in the manor). jason is Batboy, cass is Black Bat, tim is Rumor, steph is Spoiler, duke is Signal, and Damian is Leviathan. dick becomes Robin at 10
babs - dickā€™s friend from school, theyā€™re on the mathlete team together. she is a year younger than him, but they are both very smart. has yet to get into the vigilante business but probably will eventually. knows dick is Robin. her and dick once hacked into the pentagon because they were bored. absolutely terrifying duo. they become friends in middle school- dick is 12, babs is 11

im tired of damian looking exactly like bruce. give me damian who looks like talia.
damian who bruce looks at and can't see any of himself in. damian who instead reminds bruce of talia with every smile and glare. damian who grows his hair when he's older as he's growing into his mother's face. and bruce suddenly has to be enforcing gotham/bat morals and rules on someone who looks far more like an al ghul than a wayne. damian who never gets as tall as his father or brothers and who doesn't build muscle the same way leaving him to fight like his mother and cass. like an assassin. damian who can't be batman the way he's always dreamed of because he will never be a looming vengeful presence capable of physical intimidation. and that's ok. because he can be worse. he's a batman that matches black bat. silent and terrifying and no one knows he's there until the fight is over. he fights quickly and efficiently with a combination of techniques that pull from black bat, huntress, batgirl, catwoman, and even nightwing (who is a gymnast/aerialist first and foremost) at their most terrifying. and on top of that everyone knows he used to be sword robin.
he doesn't need to look anything like bruce to be a terror inducing batman. and he doesn't need to look anything like bruce to cause bruce emotional turmoil.

Tim almost killed Captain Boomerang for killing his dad, full beliefs that at some point in the midst of looking for his son, Tim kills Darkseid
100%.
If Tim doesn't kill Darkseid, it's only because Bruce isn't actually dead. Alfred would support and even help Tim kill Darkseid if Tim had gone through with it.
Either Darkseid is never heard from again, or Tim had made sure he would never be a problem again.
The difference between Boomerang and Darkseid is the notion and emotion. Tim would spit at Boomerang something like, "You killed my dad."
For Darkseid? The last words he would hear would be:
"You took my son away from me."
Extra angst could be added on because Tim hunts down Boomerang after Bruce returns from the timestream. If Tim had killed Darkseid, he would have to make sure Bruce never found out after that confrontation.

Okay, but counterpoint to all the angsty Bruce-bleeding-out:
Bruce is relieved. All his life, it's felt like Gotham has called to him, a siren song not even pretending to be pleasant but enthralling all the same. She's had him in a vice grip since that night and he's always known it deep in his heart.
So, when he's laying there curled against a wall, feet away from the spot that claimed his parents' lives, it all makes sense. Gotham's mercy always came with a price. He had thought it was his parents, but that was never true. His parents' debt had been called in that night and his own had begun - Gotham's lucky owed her their souls and she would always collect.
And yet, for Bruce, it doesn't feel like a punishment. He looks up at the raining heavens, the cold water soaking through the suit, and asks her, "Is it finally over?"
She doesn't answer, of course. The sky just rumbles with thunder, not even any lightning.
He knows he's dying. There's already too much blood washed away by the water to recover from. He wants to take off the cowl, suddenly suffocated by the duty she'd placed on him. He's being freed from his task, and he wants to feel the water wash through his hair. She exerts her influence over him one last time to stop him - if his identity gets revealed, the children will be in danger - but grants him the energy to roll onto his back. The cool water will work its way under the cowl enough for him.
"I get to stop now?" He asks.
His body feels more sluggish and the aches he almost forgets he has leave him, no longer compelled forward by her relentless drive. He knows this feeling - death is coming. But for once, it feels ... permanent. Gotham's cold, dark tendrils had been wrapped around his heart and soul for most of his life, laying their claim on him. But tonight, he felt them slip away and this death ... this death feels like the real one. It's not cold or scary, just peacefully empty. He has done his job, fulfilled his role.
Batman dies, spilling out the same blood he was baptized in, born from.
As for Bruce Wayne, well ... he's back home, of course, finally resting.
hiā€¦..first of all how dare you? second of all how dare you. third of all how DARE youā€”-

Super whump jamie centric prompt / trigger warning for CSA, SA, james tartt and zava being assholes. It could be RJ/RJK (but also would love soft Will being present somehow and I love coach Bear and Jamie silent supportive relationship) ................................................................................................... ................................................................................................... I just have the icks every time I see the way Zava is around Jamie, both the way he touches him and talks to him, so I couldn't help but think of a scenario in which those touches go slightly beyond what is in canon and into sexual harassment and assault (grabbing him in inappropriate places, threatening him, making sexual gestures, and general violence like grabbing him at the back of his head like in the weight room) etc. Now from Jamie's POV he first of all struggles with "learned silence" and is unable to enforce boundaries (which is a very common thing among survivors of CSA and we're assuming he's not ever said anything about Amsterdam and this is pre-bike ride with Roy + he's canonically bad at setting boundaries with his own father and already has an off relationship with his own body #LCA). He also doesn't want to antagonize the team again since they're finally friends again and they're all super into Zava so he just really struggles every day with Zava being a piece of shit to him, everyone loving his abuser, even the coaches not taking his suggestion when he puts it out as "for the good of the team" etc
Maybe he finds support in an expected figure like Trent Crimm or Leslie or Will (my heart has a soft spot for Jamie and Will cuddling, a couple of puppies!) or Dr OSullivan or Dr Sharon.
To make it even worse, but it's not really part of the main prompt I guess, there would be something even more awful that could have happened aka either Denbo/Bug (who are aware of Amsterdam) harassing him once back in Manchester (threatening to tell Georgie or making jokes about maybe Jamie not liking it cause it was a woman) or someone at Man City academy (like a doctor or a physio - I feel weird it being a coach because then it'd make the royjamie of it all very hard to explore - who sees Jamie struggling post-Amsterdam, being irritable and sad and zoning out and who gets him to open up) actually betraying that trust and taking advantage of him and him being unable to speak up about it both because he just did and look what happened, but also, of course, because of shame surrounding it (and it having happened again) and not wanting to cause pain to Georgie and not wanting to be kicked out of the team like he's being threatened. So you can see how this all would cause even more conflict in Jamie wanting to speak up about Zava to the coaches at Richmond.
(Sorry for the angst! It would all, of course, need a good those of hurt/comfort because that is what we live for in the end. This is just the bad stuff of the prompt, but it can go in any direction in terms of how he does bring it up and recovery and getting help and the RJ/RJK of it all).
Zava gives me bad vibes all around, and he definitely pushes Jamie's boundaries in ways that make Jamie uncomfortable, so, unfortunately, yeah, I could see this happening, making the whole Zava arc even worse for Jamie.
I hope that all the coaches, not just Roy, find out about it because I need them all to realize that Jamie was right about Zava from the get go. I will forever be bitter at the show for the conclusion of the Zava arc being that he left himself and not that the coaches realized he was ruining the whole team's dynamic exactly like Jamie said he would. And this would make it soooo much worse.

another excellent moment: in the locker room when the guys were like ā€œwell statistically like 10% of people are gay so thereā€™s probably more than one gay person in here right nowā€ and EVERYBODY looked at Jamie and when he realized why they were all staring at him he was like

I would love to hear more about your thoughts on Jamieā€™s loan being terminated
You do not know the box you have opened my friend. I've been talking about this a lot today as fic may be coming but the one word summary is that it is all about the āœØopticsāœØ
Because if we step outside of the AFC Richmond bubble and just look at the sequence of events that goes on, it looks so bad for our boy.
He fights with his teammate on the pitch over his treatment of another teammate. They are both booked for this fight. Jamie is then yanked in the first half of the game very close to half time. This looks like disciplinary action. It looks like the blame is being placed at Jamie's feet and he is being pulled off the pitch as 'punishment'. Because if it is a tactical change, if it is a problem with the play on the pitch then you wait until half time so it can be a more thought out decision. And looking at the quality of Jamie's play during the match, he's not playing badly so it can't be because of that. So it must be disciplinary.
Then, in the press conference post match Ted makes the comment "Jamie knows what he needs to do". Which is just so Ted but I'm not going to get into the Jamie side of that now because that's not relavent to this argument. SO from a press POV, that sounds an awful lot like this being a recurring problem, internal disciplinary action had been threatened and Jamie continued with this behaviour and so it would be taken further. It also places the blame for problems squarely on Jamie's shoulders.
Next couple of days, Dani Rojas. Dani would be plastered all over social media about his return. Running around training, scoring goals, being hugged by his teammates. And who's missing from these scenes ... Jamie Tartt. The striker brought in when Dani got injured who has been walking a fine line. Whispers will start proper now, where is Tartt? He wasn't injured at the game, Kent didn't even touch him. Is this disciplinary as in being barred from training in which case that is ten times worse than anyone thought or is he choosing to miss training in which case that shows a major break down and potential breach of contract. Bad news.
Then ... Jamie's loan is terminated. Now from all the vagueness about Ted not being told, no one knowing if it was City that called him back or Richmond that terminated it that likely means there was a vague as fuck statement likely just saying "Jamie Tartt's loan has been terminated, all of us at Richmond wish him well". Which screams (say it with me now) disciplinary issues. The rumour mill would be going a mile a minute but what conclusions do we expect them to draw with that being the image that was painted in the lead up.
Jamie then barely plays for City the rest of the season which doesn't fill anyone with confidence that Jamie has been 'forgiven' for his transgressions.
SO - the point being, if any other team looks at Jamie during the summer loan/transfer window after S1, his record screams DISCIPLINARY ISSUES which for basically every team out there is a deal killer. Why would you want to spend premier league salary and transfer fees for a player that might come into your team and be hostile, refuse to train, fight within the team ... you just wouldn't.
Being returned from a loan for disciplinary issues is a career killer and it adds so much to beginning of S2 Jamie because what if he had looked for a footballing way out of Manchester but no one wanted anything to do with him for the money that Man City were asking and so ... what else was he to do? But then in running away to LCA ... he just proved all of those issues right and gave Man City a real opportunity to void his contract
... for ... disciplinary issues

hi neil! i have two questions about dead boy detectives.
firstly, you mentioned that you wrote a few of the scenes in the show. if you don't mind me asking, which ones were those?
secondly, why were charles and edwin's backstories different from how they're established in the sandman comic? i assume the plotline of season of mists will be featured in the upcoming season of sandman, so how come it was cut out of edwin's backstory?
When we started making Dead Boy Detectives it was for HBO MAX, and we weren't allowed Sandman connections.
Even if we had been, part of the fun of the Dead Boy Detectives is that Charles died in 1989. Sandman on TV exists in contemporary times. (Morpheus was imprisoned in the basement of Fawney Rig in 1989 in the TV version.)
I wrote the Sandman connected scene in Episode 1, the Sandman connected scene in Episode 7, and (before the move to Netflix) the final scene with the boys back in the office in Episode 8.
