I honestly like to think that the reason Gordon Freeman can't mantle or climb without the aid of a ladder isn't for any game design reason, but simply because the HEV Suit weighs 500 pounds and is built like a dump truck. Trying to do a pull-up in that thing seems like asking for trouble, especially for a 6'2 twink who weighs less than a wet paper bag.
