Living in The Big City
Tumblr media
Living in a big city has its own perks and benefits. I live in suburban area that is quite close to the big city and I am familiar with the way the city lifes are. I have to disagree with the statement above because I find living in a big city is very colorful and very accessible. Everything and everyone that you want and need are here for you to discover. There are many foods, stuffs, and activities that you can try. People who live in the big city are coming from different background and cultures. This what makes big city are very dynamic and unique. It is easy to find what you are looking for in the big city, everything is provided to meet everyone's needs. Big city is usually never sleeps that means many stores and shops are open almost 24 hours. You will never find the difficulties in fulfilling your necessities. Big city is also very connected and well designed. There would be no problem to go from one place to another with public transports and better sidewalks. Parks, libraries, coffeeshops, restaurants, and many more places to go on your weekends. Those many advantages of big city can spoil people who get used to live in the big city. However, the downside of living in the big city is that it is expensive to live in. It is also very competitive job market to enter to and because all of the crowds and festivities in the city, people can be easily feeling alone and fall into the pit of depression. This what can make city life loses its appeal. It is when people are too overwhelm to handle a big city and they fail to live up to their dreams.

Tiger Island: A Must Visit Island in Jakarta
Early June 2019, I went to the Tiger island that is located in the thousand island of Jakarta. Yes, it is a part of the north Jakarta so if you are happen to visit Jakarta in the future I recommend you to visit this island or any other island in the thousand island because there are a lot of them to choose from!
I already booked Tiger island’s sunset hut a month before my arrival because I am afraid that I will forgot to have it reserved at the time of holiday. The boat depart from Marina port in Ancol at 8 AM with a speedboat, the port was busier than the normal weekend because it was holiday season and I misjudge that Indonesian does not like island, they apparently do (which is good that they finally realized the ‘hidden’ gem in their capital city). Why did I called that a ‘hidden’ gem? because most people do not realize the beauty of thousand island until they experience to visit the island firsthand.
I was one of those people before I visit Tidung island on 2017 with my tourism class from the campus for our paper research. I was hooked with thousand island and by the time this article published I have visited 5/36. There are actually more than 300 island in the thousand island but among them are either privately owned or uninhibited.
Before I went to Tiger island I do my research on which island that I will be visiting next with my mother and brother for our holiday and my end decision is Tiger Island. The booking process was easy, I got the contact number from their instagram account and I messaged them which hut I choose and how many nights and guests will be staying, next they sent me the invoice and the payment method.
Fast forward to the Island, it was so peaceful, because there was only about four other guests at the time I am visiting. The island alone is limiting their guest number for only 30 guests per night. Tiger island is a private resort with two islands owned by the resort, the main island is for the accommodation and the other one is for sunbathing or other thing to explore (it has a lot of trees similar to mini forest).
It was perfect for my family because for months we have been working hard and being in a peaceful island far from the crowd and insanity is all that we needed.
The corals surrounding the island are beautiful and they had colors! I am impressed, there was yellow corals, red corals, pink corals, etc. A lot of sea urchins too which is possibly a good sign for the ecosystem I supposed. Tiger island is a resort with environmentally friendly concept. They build each of their huts and furnitures in the island with driftwood and they use solar panels for their electricity.
I could not get enough for it even though I stayed there for three nights! I should also mention that they have delicious foods, I love their salads it was so tasteful. If I was given the chance to visit the island again I would. Their staffs and host are also very friendly and helpful. Money worth spent.

Sambolo: A Beautifully Peaceful Beach in Anyer
If you are a foreigner or a local that don’t have a clue about Sambolo beach, stay with me and read the whole article because Indonesia has a lot to offer than just Kuta Bali, Lombok, etc. Sambolo beach is the alternative to your beach destination with cheaper and less crowded option. The Sambolo beach is located about 3 hours away from Jakarta.
In the first semester break of college my classmates decided to go on vacation together for two days, we choose Sambolo beach as our destination as suggested by Sandra, one of my classmate.
We decided to rent a cottage with a water-front view with 3 bedroom, one bathroom, a kitchen and huge living room. The cottage is very modest but match our college student budget and the fact that the only cottage that is occupied were ours it feels like we have our own private beach!
We choose the middle cottage out of 3 cottage in Sambolo and there were no one rent the other neighboring cottages. It is because when we went there it was not a public holiday, therefore everyone is either working or at school.
With minimum budget about USD$30/person for two whole day from transportation, accomodation, and food we successfully arranged the best short trip for about 10 people in our class. It was awesome, we even have barbecue and big campfire on the beach shore on midnight!
We circle the campfire on midnight singing and play the truth or dare game until we’re all tired and decided to sleep. The next day, we decided to rent a mini board to just swimming in the beach. After that some of us decided to play the banana boat thingy, so we asked the man who took care of our cottage and after we wait about 15 minutes the boat arrived in front of our cottage!
The banana boat guy came only for us in front of our cottage! I feel so rich with minimum budget at that time lol.
The view when I was on the boat was unbelievable, I didn’t bring my dslr camera with me for obvious reason. All I can tell you was that when we’re on the ocean I can see that far behind our cottage was a beautiful landscape of mountain and trees I was just speechless and amaze with the view.
If I have the time, I would definitely come to Sambolo again!
Sadly, before the Christmas eve in 2018 Sunda Strait was hit by dreadful tsunami caused by the eruption of mount child of Krakatoa and killed more than 400 people and thousands injured. From the news, it was confirmed that Sambolo is the most affected area and everything is completely destroyed.
I can only hope that the man who took care of the cottage we rented and his family were doing okay along with the other people that renting the board, selling the coconut and everyone that have helps us while we were there.

Life After High School
Congratulation! You just graduated from high school, so what’s next?
Your daily routines will never be the same exactly as it once was, the people around you, the familiar faces, the school canteen, the recess, the after school activities.
For those of you that have been accepted to the University, good for you! you just got to wait for the orientation and your new daily campus schedule. Years of seeing the same halls and classes about to come.
For those of you that choose to work, good for you too! No more school halls and classes for you. You have got to deal with job and taxes! It should be awesome when you received your first paycheck, finally you feel contributed to the economic activities.
To the other that are still deciding what to do next, there are a lot of activities that you can do! Such as become a volunteer, freelance worker, helper, or just being a free loader in your household. The choice is yours to make.
There are a lot of no more’s, no more popular kids, no more geeks, no more jocks, no more smarties, no more class clowns, the list goes on. It’s fun and surprising to see what everyone turned out to be in the upcoming years after high school but that is how life is. Everyone changed for the better or the worst.
We are not going to be a wallflower just observing everyone’s changing phase, we, realizing or not, are also changing overtime. Just be careful with where your next step is, cause I’m sure someone is always watching over you. Perhaps judging or appreciating you, it depends on that next step.
My tip? Don’t be so stressed up and overthink much cause what matters now may not be matters tomorrow.

Food Travel Experience: Tidung Island, A Short Trip To Jakarta’s Reputable Thousand Island
On Sunday, May 8th 2018 the tourism class that I am in went to Tidung Island for doing the Fun and Research program before the final exam. The well-known island is not so far from north of Jakarta, our boat trip was only about three hours to get there. On the way to the Tidung Island, the committees that taken care of this trip hand out some bread to the participants for a quick breakfast. The bread has chocolate filling in it, the sweetness from  the chocolate mixed with the bread itself that create a good taste for such a cheap price.
We arrived at Tidung Island at about 11 o’clock, we headed to our homestay from the main port with bicycle that we rented. For the record we went to Tidung Island with a guide that has taken care of our trip from Muara Angke port to Tidung Island because none of us has been there before so it is best for us to have a guide. Although, if we ever wanted to come back to thousand island, we will not be using a guide because we can press our budget cheaper than it already is.
At 12 o’clock we had our lunch that has been provided on a table near the gazebo. The menus for that day was fried fishes, tamarind vegetable soup (sayur asam), some fried tofu ball that was covered with bread crumbs. Unfortunately, the woman that serves us foods forgot to bring the sambel (mashed chili) but she rushed back to the kitchen which is supposedly at her house and when she got back some of us had already finished our meal.
The foods is not different from any regular food, there is no unique side of the food in Tidung Island. When we walked to the Love Bridge (Jembatan Cinta), there are some food stalls that serves food that would normally being served in daily basis in Jakarta such as Bakso Malang (Malang meatball), Instant noodles, Coconut drink, even Soto. The only difference is that the place where we enjoyed them, the seashore where the breeze followed by the wave washed away and the feeling of eating together with friends.
Before we went to snorkeling, the girls went to buy some street food we saw earlier near the main port. The street food that we look for was the egg rolls seasoned with papeda spices, the food was good but also ordinary which means we can easily find them in Jakarta (aside from the Island). Fast forward to when we were snorkeling, three participants were being stung by sea urchins that were lied just under our boat without us knowing. Our tour guide said that, the sea urchins in that place were not poisoned and that they will be okay. The only thing that they should do is to take out any part of the sea urchin that still being sticked on their feet.
If we talked about, sea urchin we usually see them being eaten right away but after its spine being removed and we cut open their shells. We do not need to cooked them because the meat is very small and fragile so it is best to eat them right away. People said it is taste salty just like the sea, some seafood restaurant sells them but it is not very easy to find in random restaurant.
In the night time, we were being served with fried chicken with sambal, tofu, and crackers (kerupuk). After we had our dinner, we went barbecuing in front of our homestay that is looking out right at the ocean. The boys have role to grill the foods, and the girls dance along to some music. We are all dressed in Hawaiian themed clothes accessorized with flower crown which I personally hated it, but it is exceptional for this event.
The foods that were being grilled were some fish, sausages, meatballs, and some frozen seafood special for barbecuing.
All food were being grilled and seasoned with simple soy sauce and butter only. My favorite meal was the sausage which were always be everyone’s favorite in every barbecuing event I ever been on. The fish alone, were being prepared by our tour guide and we assume it is fresh from the sea. The fish taste good combined with some soy sauce and sambal and again, we were being accompanied with some music mixed with sound of the oceans wave.
The next morning before we depart from the island, we were being served with some Uduk Rise with egg balado, sambal and fried potato as the side dish. The Uduk rise was delicious, I finished them all which is very rarely coming from me.
In conclusion the foods in Tidung island is not very different from the food that we normally eat in Jakarta, there is still lack of uniqueness that I assume can be matured from the surrounding area in the sea. The locals should be serving their own seafood that is fresh from the ocean considering Tidung island is surrounded by rich sea area rather than serving the mainstream foods that are already familiar with the tourists’ taste bud. Some creativity can goes a long way, if Tidung island have their own taste in culinary I am sure that tourists will not only remember the breathtaking scenery of Tidung island but also the foods that will eventually lead them back to the Island. Thousand island does not only have Tidung island as its destination, therefore creativity in culinary tourism could be divided Tidung island with any other neighboring island.
One thing that people will easily remembering and reminiscing is always either smells or taste of some remarkable food. In order to have more and steady tourist visit in Tidung island, other from their infrastructure is their food. They could transform the seaweed into edible food that can be served as the side dish or even dessert such as jelly.
There is so many way they can make use of their surrounding, if only they pay more attention to this subject rather than being a tour guide or only renting out their houses there are more into it than those mentioned subject.

Pencak Silat as Tourism Product
Pencak Silat can be categorized as tourism product comparable to Karate from Japan, Pencak Silat classified as a Martial Art tourism originally from Indonesia. Since the rise of hits action movie ‘The Raid’ Pencak Silat certainly has gained the international attention especially for those who have interest in martial arts.
It is proven by a media that stated, ‘The Raid’ movie helps Pencak Silat go international. Numbers of European show their interest in Pencak silat and wants to learn the methods of the famous martial arts in their country.
The government of Indonesia have held many events that promotes Pencak Silat abroad by organizing International competition for Pencak Silat. We also have school of martial art for Pencak Silat spread across the globe, mostly taught by native Indonesian.
The government can help to develop our beloved Pencak Silat by holding a Pencak Silat show in every national events abroad such as the Independence Day of Indonesia. We should make the citizen of the world familiar with Pencak Silat in a good perspective so they are willing to learn about this martial art technique.
If we successful in making Pencak Silat more famous, the foreigner will eventually have the interest to learn more from our country soil to experience the real Pencak Silat firsthand. Meaning more tourist attracted to visit Indonesia. This will make Pencak Silat professionals have job in martial art tourism equal to Karate in Japan.

Korean Band and Indonesian Band
Kpop is hands down taking the world by storm, filled with boy bands and girl bands which are mostly only do dancing and singing. These artists have to go through years and years of practicing and preparing before being debuted to the public. They sure have good quality of performance and energy, and that is what make the world attracted to Kpop now days. In contrast, Indonesia creative industry is varied. We have solo singers, boy and girl bands, bands that are actually play instruments and etc.
Let’s talk about bands that are actually play instruments, we do not see this kind of performers in Kpop. If we ever found one, it usually a rock band not in pop genre. In Indonesia we have Hivi and Maliq & D’essentials, who are adored not only in Indonesia but also people aboard. Their main markets are Indonesia, Malaysia and Brunei Darussalam. These three countries are targeted because most of the residents can and understand Indonesian or Malay language so it is easier for them to enjoy their music.
Hivi and Maliq both are unique because their members are not limited by gender, both of these bands have male and female member in their band. In Kpop, it is quite hard to find this kind of diversity in a band. CNBlue is a korean pop band who’s members are actually play instrument, though all members are male gendered.
Therefore, Indonesia is still, can be considered superior to South Korea in terms of Pop band that have diversity of the members and are actually playing music instruments. Not saying the Kpop are less talented obviously, because we know that some of Kpop band member can play instrument individually.
This was written for the purpose of my tourism paper, if anyone is not agree with me feel free to correct this article on the comment below.
