Blue - June: Mermaids (James Bond)

After the closing of Bond's latest mission, Q came into the office to find a small book lying on his desk. It was no larger than his palm and the cover was blank. When he flipped it open he was met with a hand drawn mermaid, her tail a deep radiating blue. Surprisingly, her modesty was intact. He flipped quickly through the book once and then returned to the first page and repeated the action at a slower pace, watching incredulously as the mermaid twisted and danced, tail flipping from side to side and arms stretching tantalisingly above her head.

Rush started at the voice, gravelly and possessing far too much bass for even an extremely bad cold to explain. It set him on edge, some instinct buried deep within him demanding he run this instant. He'd barely drawn his feet beneath him when a snarl echoed down the corridor. In the argument of fight-flight-freeze, it was rare his body chose the latter option, too well trained in the pain that would befall him if he didn't act. Now, however, he was frozen to the spot as if his higher brain functions had spontaneously ceased.

Simeon had hurt Rush, to such an extent that the man had risked losing Destiny - his life's work - in an attempt to hunt him down. Not just an attempt, Young thought. A fucking one man execution squad, ferocious and deadly and something he found himself incredibly proud of. I always knew you had it in you to play with the big boys and win. Why have you refused to enter the game for so long? The first time on Icarus a soldier talked out of the side of their mouth at you, you should have thrown down. Sure, we don't usually do that sort of thing with civilians, but if there are witnesses and the civilian's up for it, why the hell not? It's an awful universe out there; why shouldn't we be allowed to bond with some innocent rough and tumble?

Across the room the soldier jolts as if electrocuted. Rush sees his eyes open, terrible wet gurgles twisting free from his mouth. Rush doesn't have anything more than basic first aid training, but common sense leads him to believe it doesn't look good. Young and Telford share another of their brief bouts of eye contact where they apparently have an entire fucking conversation, Young turning away from Rush's bed without saying anything and approaching the team working. At the sight of him, the soldier tries to lift an arm. "It's alright, Baras," Young says, soothing and firm, every bit the staunch commanding officer. "Don't try to speak. We have the situation under control." Sweet lies you tell to dying men. Lies you tell yourself, his brain barks at him.
