Just found out I was thirsty not by receiving a signal from my body about it but by dozing off and dreaming about cold water from different alluring angles. This is great. I think all my wants and needs should be revealed to me this way

I'm nonverbal but I love to sing along to songs and people find it weird how I can't talk normally but I can sing just fine. My friends (I love them) found a way to communicate with me through songs and lyrics as well as some sign language. People look at us funny all the time. I obviously can't explain to them what's going on but they just kind of stare at me even if my friends explain. I don't like that at all. Is there anything I can do?
That sounds like echolalia! It's awesome that you and your friends are able to communicate that way and that they will explain to others when you aren't able to. They sound lovely :)
Unfortunately there are going to be people who won't understand and won't even try to - not necessarily to be mean, just out of ignorance. You can't control their reaction but you can control how you react, such as moving away or getting your friends to tell them to stop and leave you alone. It might help to have a signal you can give them to let them know you want to leave the situation so they can support you.
I'm sorry you have to deal with people who don't understand. It's their problem, not yours - don't let them stop you from singing or communicating in a way that works for you.

anyway this is what I mean when I say that certain disorders being made quirky and memeable does not help with destigmatisation. people can say “autistic cat girls make the world go round” and then turn around and say “[common autistic trait] makes you evil btw”. and don’t see anything bad about that. they’re totally not ableist! they said it right there! they find autism sexy! hell world

Omg yes. We have both of that.

"Autistics take things literally."
Not all of us.
But I do, often but not all the time. However, you will rarely ever notice. Because I've been called stupid so many times for not just "getting it". Even though, from my point of view it's you who are messing up the communication.
Because of this I will ask you a billion questions to make sure I understand what you're saying to me. I am terrified of getting it wrong.
Because this is rarely a cutesy matter of misunderstanding. It can mean extreme embarrassment, loss of friendship or loss of a job.

Shoutout to all the people who...
Are always talked over in group settings
Rehearse what they are going to say loads of times in their head and still end-up with their words coming out jumbled
Take longer to process jokes/people's speech
Just get brushed-off when they ask people to repeat their jokes
Always feel like they are seen as an acquaintance rather than a best friend by others
Find parties overwhelming and feel boring for preferring nights in
Feel lonely but also don't know how to go about making friends as an adult
Feel embarrassed/ashamed for not having friends

When my mum looked into the possibility of me being autistic when I was a kid, the information she could find said I would have to be nonverbal and unable to read.
While it's true that some autistic people are nonverbal some or all of the time, or may struggle with reading or be dyslexic, neither of those are a requirement to be autistic.
Every autistic person is different.
(I'm pretty sure I was hyperlexic.)
