besiwoo
is this the second? third? time they've been in the same team? siwoo can't tell anymore, it seems as though the days mush together to create one whole unforgettable experience called next gen. which siwoo, has had his... highs and lows of. clearly. still, his high had been very high. winning on puzzle and climbing up the ranks after what felt like forever. the judges were right though, after starting all of this out of spite, siwoo's finally taking things more seriously. instead of just not wanting to look stupid on stage, he wants to do well. like, actually. it's an odd feeling. he approaches seira, and pats her back. "we meet again," he says, and he tries to give her an encouraging smile. "what do you think of the song we got?"
seira has mixed feelings, she’s quite very happy to have made it this far, but she remains in the bottom. she’s not even entirely sure what she’s doing wrong, they’re saying she hasn’t shown an improvement, but personally it feels like she’s improved, she came here unable to sing, and though she’s not exactly the best singer yet, she’s not the worst. in dance too, she joined the show with kind of two left feet, and now she definitely wasn’t the worst dancer. she was unsure what she was doing wrong, but she still wanted to try her best.
she sends a smile to siwoo as he approaches her, it’s very comforting to see a familiar face. “glad to see you again” she says, her words very true, she feels more comfortable with the members she’s been in a team with before. “i love it! it fits me so well, last time i had to work hard to fit in, and the judges in the end said i didn’t even do it that well… this is a song i’m confident and comfortable in, i hope this performance can get me out of the bottom” she sighs quietly, “what’s your opinion on the song?”.

let me dance
this was a song seira felt confident in, unlike with puzzle, bang was in seira’s comfort zone. seira had landed in the bottom again, luckily this time, she felt comfortable and confident with the song. she got to show off her rap, her strongest skill, and it was a dance she could keep up with. she continued working hard like she did with puzzle, come in early, stay late, practice at home. seira was thankful to have made it so far, but she was still in the bottom, she needed to work as hard as she could.
practicing rap by herself is easy, she feels confident in her rap, and though she wouldn’t say it out loud, she thinks she’s the best rapper in the team. she doesn’t struggle with the dance, it’s easy to learn, but though seira is confident in her dance skills, it’s still nice to practice along with someone else, sometimes it’s easier to see if something doesn’t look right when you’re with someone else. "you wanna go over the chorus dance part with me?" she asks a fellow teammember.

do you know me
though seira hasn’t been in a group with every next gen participant, by now she knows everyone’s names. a lot of people she's been in a group with, a lot of her fellow participants has helped her come this far, and though she hasn’t been in a group with everyone, she’s seen the other’s perform, get scolded or praised for their performances. seira doesn’t think she’ll walk out of this with being everyone’s friend, but she hopes that some of the friendships she’s made while in the show will stay.
for now though, she can’t focus on friendships, she needs to focus on her performance, because no matter how hard seira worked, she’s still placed last. some of her group members she’s asked for help for before, but she’s interested in the advice of someone she’s barely had any interactions with yet. so even though jaeyoung and seira haven’t spoken much, she walks up to him, “hi jaeyoung!” the young girl gives a smile to the other along with her words.

“kinda. drawing– more like digital media.” she clarifies, shifting in her seat. at the mention of songwriting, she perks up a bit, curious. she gives a little hum, tapping the side of her cup with her palm. “you never know. you could catch the right eye of someone and blow them away.” lyric writing does seem hard, though. the few times that sua even attempted scribbling something down, she was quick to crumble it up and throw it away. “it is luck, but not always. luck and…” sua trails off, thinking. “patience, probably. it doesn’t happen overnight, but if you like it enough– well.” she shrugs. “that should be a good thing, right?”
she gives a nod “yeah, and you just have to be nice no matter what, they can yell at you, and you just have to smile and apologize, even if they’re wrong” seira had never guessed how hard costumer service would be, and she’d never wanted to hit anyone till she had to work with terrible customers. she now admires anyone doing a job like her, because it’s tough work.
she hums, “if i work hard enough it might work out well” she shrugs, “i’ve always liked songwriting, but never really had the time for it, now i have so much time on my hands” she sips her drinks. “maybe i should give it a try, i don’t wanna be a barista for forever”. “digital media, is that like drawing on your phone, or?”.

luciel gives a slow nod, “then i suppose picturing the concept may be difficult. i’m not the best, but i know a thing or two about portraying sensuality.” seira looks more desperate than him, which isn’t unexpected, from being in top rankings and then thrown to the bottom. so he’s careful with his words. “i told this to one of our other teammates — confidence and mindfulness is crucial in portraying the concept we’re giving. to be aware of your movements with poise, know how to play it cool when necessary.” seira’s role was a little more special than his. she’s a detective, but has an undercover role. he wasn’t sure how seira is visualising the double role, so he didn’t said anything further in case it disrupted her thoughts. “may i know how you’re fairing with the concept at the moment? you can tell me how it’s been going for you far.”
seira was a bit nervous, this was a performance that needed her to climb in ranks or she would get eliminated, but it was a concept she’d never tried before. had the concept been cute or girl crush, she would’ve nailed it by ease, but this was something she needed to work even harder on. she could learn the dance, she could learn the singing, she could learn the rap, none of that was the problem, what she needed to focus on was the details, her facial expressions.
“i’ve practiced my facial expressions a lot in front of the mirror at home, but it’s always good to have advice from others as well”. “i’m a bit nervous, but i’m also very excited, this is a side of me i’ve never seen before, i really want to do well, i don’t think i’ve ever worked this hard on a performance before”.

question time
"and i don't mind"
...
she sits down on the chair, pushes her hair away from her face and gives the camera a smile.
‘what was the greatest challenge during this mission?’ she hums, plays with the end of her sleeve. “it was new… i’ve performed a lot before, but never a concept like this before, so i was scared whether i could pull it off or not”. “learning the dance was easy enough, singing and rapping wasn’t too hard, but i had to use a lot of time on practicing my facial expressions and my overall vibe”. “with practice comes perfection, and i think my hard work has really shown off”. “i was scared in the beginning, but in the end i could give a performance i was proud and confident to show”
‘was there another participant who was especially helpful?’ “i think especially chaerin and nayoung were helpful. i practiced together with all of my teammates, but chaerin and nayoung gave me good advice. they’re trainees and know how to give a good performance, so their advice was really good, it helped me with my performance and confidence, so i’m thankful the two were willing to help me”.
‘do you feel confident in your performance?’ she nods immediately, “yes i do, i worked hard for this performance, and i think my hard work payed off, i’m confident in my skills and the performance i’ve given.

hyunki had been dancing almost his entire life, he'd cycled through all sorts of performances. elegant and sexy weren't exactly brand new to him, but the theatrics that came with idol performances were. it was rare that dancing he would have all these props and a large storyline to unravel. sure, he told story through song and dance, but he'd never been a part of an organized crime syndicate that was being hunted down by three detectives, one of which was actually a spy. either way, he was having a lot of fun. he hadn't gotten to show a sexier and more mature side to the judges yet. when seira inquired about the part they were working on, he took a moment to seriously consider where they were in the song and their story. "a bit more serious i would say, but it's very possible to be serious while also still being desirable and sexy," he tossed out, mostly thinking out loud. "what feels most natural to you for this section?"
seira has never acted much, does facial expressions count as a form of acting? she knows how to look cute during a performance. her group’s concept was cute and girl crush, so that’s the vibe and theme she used to practice for, seira doesn’t think she’s ever done a concept like this before. it worries her a bit, but it’s also exciting, she gets to show the world, along with herself, that she can do sexy concepts too. she knows her old members are watching the show, she’s looking forward to their reaction on this performance, after all, she’ll always be their cute little maknae.
but for something like this, something completely new, she’s happy to have people around her who has done this kind of concept before. she takes in advice from her team members, happy they’re willing to share their words. she has to learn a lot, and often it’s easier to learn if someone is teaching you rather than you’re learning it yourself. seira makes sure to practice by herself, especially when she’s the last to go, or is just practicing her facial expressions at home.
“i was actually thinking of a mix between sexy and serious, but would that look weird? here, i’ll show you what i had in mind, and you can give me your opinion”.

ara made it to the next round, but she had things she had to work through. the feedback she received from last round remains live and rampant in her mind - not to underdance and to teach the others, if that's what it had to take. she remained focused and engaged with the group though, the group was double in size in comparison to last time and they had a lot more fun things they could do with the choreography. and concept. it's honestly extremely exciting. and the song was a change from the last one she had too. to no one's surprise, her ranking dipped but just like her group mates, they wanted to succeed and hopefully escape eliminations. "yes, i definitely can help you with that. we can both practice together. especially since there's some light acting parts with our roles in this concept, right? i think it's important to not look bored, and look captivating while also fitting this concept. why not let me take a breather, and i'll watch you run through this part and i can give you a few tips? pretend like i'm not even here... except i'm right here, but you understand what i am trying to say," ara insists, stepping to the front to face seira, resting on the mirror.
seira wasn’t that nervous about her dance nor her rap, she’d done both for a while, she wasn’t a bad performer. and though placing last made her question her skills a bit, she looked back on the performances she’d given, and she didn’t find herself to be terrible. she knows dance-wise and rap-wise, she can give a good performance, but she needs more than that if she wishes to climb in ranks, and she needs to climb in ranks, she can’t stay last place.
seira has practiced a lot by herself this time around, mostly when she comes in early or stays late, but when she is with her fellow team members, she’s happy to hear their advice, she wants this performance to be perfect, every detail is important to her, so every comment or advice from the coaches and other participants, she takes in gladly. she gives the other a nod “i’ll do the dance like no one is here, except of course, there’s people here” she giggles. “look for the small things too, they’re also important”.
she runs a hand through her hair “can you start the music?”.

not my last chance
"see me now, let me know" performing: puzzle line distribution: ❥
...
this was a performance she would not mess up, seira wanted to prove she deserved to be here, that ranking her last had been a mistake. she’d never done a concept like this before, and though it had feared her in the beginning, now she was ready to give a performance filled with confidence. she’d worked hard, by herself, with her members, with the coaches. she used every second she could use on practice. came early, stayed late, went over the lyrics in the bus on her way home, practiced her facial expressions in the mirror once home, going over the dance in her head before she slept.
seira was not a bad performer, and she wanted to prove that, she was going to give a great performance. she finds herself going over the dance again backstage as she waits for her turn to go on the stage. she’s learned the choreography and her parts a long time ago, she’s practiced and focused on every detail, and though she’s danced the choreography a million times before without making any mistake, she practices again, because there’s no room for mistakes.
and then it’s her turn to stand on stage, she walks into the stage with a smile on, giving a wave to the judges, and then she waits for her turn to introduce herself. “hello, i’m ito seira, i’m thankful to stand on this stage, and hope i can give you a performance you’ll enjoy” the smile stays on her lips, right until she has to perform, where her facial expressions quickly change to fit the performance.
she’s worked hard, and she gives a performance she feels confident in, she lets her confidence be shown, she does the dance she’s practiced a million times, she’s remembered all of her parts, singing and rapping them like she’s practiced a million times. she gives a performance, and hopes it won’t be her last.

during the first performance, luciel vividly remembers @beseira helping him out in practice. seeing as they were both in the same team, this time he takes the opportunity to lend a helping hand. the latter didn’t seemed to be the most confident this time around, so he thought of returning the favor for the earlier times she helped him out. “is there anything you’re worried about?” he asks as he approaches her. the two were on the bottom rankings, so luciel has an idea of how seira was feeling at the moment. it wasn’t the best feeling — they were both at desperate ends, trying to find ways to climb back up. “some singing… or the concept itself, i could give a few pointers. for myself, i’ve been having a tough time in being more… expressive in my performance overall. i haven’t been too confident either, but i need to face forward and try harder.” he adds in that last bit in an attempt to bond with the other.
seira got the taste of top five, just to be thrown down the rankings. seira didn’t feel like she’d given a bad performance, but her performance had landed her on last place. seira refused to stay in last place, she refused to be the next to get eliminated. she worked even harder for this performance, there was no room for mistakes, she needed to climb the ranks.
she finds herself along with fellow team member luciel, the other offering help. “i’m confident in my rap and dance, and i know i’m not the worst singer, but if there’s something else i’m worried about? maybe the concept, it’s one i’ve never done before, so i’m a bit unsure about my facial expressions, maybe you could help with that?”.

before chaerin became a trainee, she believed that the greatest artists were those who were the most skilled. however, she soon learned that there was a difference between being a good singer or dancer and being a good performer. the latter required a lot more than just skills, and it's what she had to spend a good amount of time learning to do herself. "a lot of it is mind control. if you're unconfidence, it becomes really obvious on stage. even if you think you're doing a good job of hiding it, most people will be able to tell," she advises. it's something she was told at the beginning of her training period as well, and it felt a bit odd that she was now in a position to be saying this to someone else. "what i like to do is look in the mirror and just give myself a good pep talk. i know it may sound a little cringey, but trust me, it works. you have to convince yourself that you're the best in order for that to show up in your performance."
seira is happy to have nayoung and chaerin as the coaches, the two of them know what it’s actually like to be a trainee, and perform. a lot of coaches can be scary, they don’t know what it’s like to practice for a performance. it’s nice to be coached by people who have been in your situation, and seira looks up to the two coaches, who knows, maybe seira will manage to be a coach too some day.
she gives a nod “i want to show off confidence, i think if i practice enough, the confidence should come along too?”. “i’m really thankful for my team members, you guys have been a great help” she shows the other a smile. “i’ll take your advice, whenever i get home from practice, i’ll look in the mirror” yes it sounded a bit cringy, but seira would love to give it a try.

watch me
this was going to be a great performance, seira wanted to make sure of that. she’d never worked this hard on a performance, not even during her idol days. nothing could go wrong, every detail was important to seira. she’d learned her parts of the song and the dance a long time ago, now she was just making sure everything was good. she’d never done a concept like this before, which feared seira a bit, but she was sure with hard work she could bring a good performance.
she finds herself with fellow team member hyunki, the two going over the dance and their facial expressions together. “for this part, would it fit better if i tried to look serious or sexy?” she asks the other, any advice during this performance very important to her.

besiwoo
he's no natural when it comes to dancing. or at least, that's what siwoo firmly believes in. he's never actually formally been to dance classes ( except for the few that haein has dragged him to ), and has never actually learned how to rap – it just wasn't something that he thought would ever be inherently important to him. yet here he was, now tasked with the duty to rap and dance, and well, perform. at the very least though, the concept this time isn't completely horrible. if anything, it's something that siwoo thinks might actually be doable for someone like him. the dance is still something that he's a little iffy with, and he thinks it shows as his limbs move around awkwardly. "really?" he says, and he repeats the move once more, this time speeding up his arms. "ah... like that," he nods his head, and takes a look at himself in the mirror. not bad, he thinks. "thanks seira," he smiles, thankful that she's gone out of her way to help him. "for facial expressions, i just... think that i'm the best. even though i'm clearly not," he laughs – the judges remarks can back him up on that. "i think about how no one else can pull off looking like me... but me. something like that," he says, trying his best to give her some pointers, despite the fact that he'd never really been much of a teacher himself.
seira has often been used to being the one to ask for help, rarely ever giving advice to others. when she was an idol, she was the maknae, and she got quite babied, if seira needed help with anything, her members were quick to help. it was a skill she’d never really practiced, how to be the helper rather than the one needing help. but helping siwoo with his dance felt good, she felt like she was improving at the same time as she helped him. she gives him a nod with a smile “that looks much better!”.
seira listens carefully as the other speaks, seira might have learned the whole dance and all her lines, but she needs to learn to fit the vibe too. practice her facial expressions will be a great help for her performance. “so… i should just act really confident?” she tilts her head as she asks the other, “i’ve only ever done cute and girl crush concepts, maybe i could watch some performances of people doing a sexy concept, go through how they match the vibe?”.

betouma
although touma’s team had won, he doesn’t forget jihun’s reaction to both of the pink venom teams. truth be told, touma got a bit frazzled then—it’s hard not to, the entire scene was intimidating and even the editors made sure to point that out when the episode aired. touma, who usually isn’t scared of anything, was unnerved. but, just like with anything, he decides to turn that into motivation. he takes the constructive advice to heart, it helped that the judges gave him what to focus on. it looks like seira felt something similar. “i understand what you mean,” touma nods. “i think i can rap, but i want to prove that i can sing too.” it hadn’t been intentional back then, but it’s true that singing became an afterthought despite his improvement. now, he’s taken on more singing lines—it’s time to start working hard on polishing that skill in particular. “i haven’t.” then again, he never really professionally performed something where he needed to come up with concepts. the songs he liked to cover aren’t usually like puzzle though. “we can run through our lines, figure out how to make it more… sensual.”
seira was set on giving the best performance, she wished this to be the best performance she’d ever given. she wanted to prove she deserved to be here, to the judges, to the viewers, to herself. she practiced harder than ever, every detail was important to her, nothing could go wrong. she found herself entering the practice room early, staying late, continue going over the lyrics as she ate a late dinner at home. this, this was going to be a good performance.
she gives a nod, “want me to grab you a bottle of water before we begin?” she tilts her head, eyes look at the other. she sits down, the lyric sheet in her hand. “i start the song, i figured we could begin with my line?”. “it’s definitely a different vibe than what i’m used to, but i think i can do it”.

after having worked with seira the last round, chaerin was pretty upset herself to find that she's placed last. while she had seen the improvements the other had made during the short time they were given, it must've not been enough for the judges. however, she noticed that the biggest problem seira seemed to have was her confidence. chaerin really didn't want to play the role of a mean coach, but she thinks some stern words were what seira needed at the moment. she spent the last round walking through everything with her, but she knew better than anybody else that if seira wanted to continue down this path, she was going to have to learn to do things on her own. "seira, you really need to start having more faith in yourself. look, you're not a bad dancer or singer, but your talent gets hidden on stage because you look unsure of yourself most of the time," she states with a purse of her lips. there was nothing more she could do for her at this point because confidence was something she had to learn to build up on her own. "when it comes to the actual performance, you have to empty your mind of the numerous thoughts and
seira wasn’t a terrible performer, she rapped well and she wasn’t the worst singer nor dancer, she had experience under her belt, yet she’d dropped to the very bottom of the ranks. she’d gotten a taste of top five, just to be thrown down the ranks. seira was a bit scared, feared elimination, so this time around she worked extra hard. she refused to get eliminated. she’d come in early, stay late, practice whenever she had time, all that was on her mind this time around, was her performance.
“i’ve started to feel more confident in my skills, but, i’ve never done a concept like this before” she fiddles with the end of her sleeve. “i know i can rap, sing and dance the part, but can i learn the whole vibe too?”. “but you’re right, i need confidence for this performance”. “when you’re nervous before a performance, what do you do?”.

benayoung
nayoung is riding a high. not only did her team win immunity last episode, eclipsing the other don't call me team, but her team undoubtedly gave the best performance of the night - or at least in the judges' eyes. she didn't contribute that much to her group's concept, and she knew from the moment her group was announced that it wasn't fair to the others in the competition - but she's proud, nonetheless. not that nayoung really needs a confidence boost. it's nice regardless. speaking of confidence, seira sits by her while they're eating lunch, and asks her about just that. nayoung chews the kimbap she just took a bite of, and considers the question. "i have a lot of experience," she admits, after swallowing. "i've been performing in some way since i was eight years old. i think confidence comes with practice," though nayoung can't remember ever lacking any, "but in this instance you do need to develop it quickly. if you don't feel confident, you can think of it like...playing the role of someone confident. like acting. you'll have to act a lot for this performance anyway, so it's a good skill to develop. it's also helpful to just...pretend to be confident to yourself, too. whenever you think something that lacks confidence, counter it with something confident, even if you don't believe it yet. if you're thinking, 'what if i can't do it?' then you need to think, 'no, this is going to be my best performance yet.' it'll help."
nervousity is filled in seira’s body. she’s aware of her skills, she can rap, she’s not the worst dancer nor singer, she’s confident in her skills, but nervous about coming off as confident. she wants to give a performance where it’s obvious she feels secure in the performance. so far it’s helped practicing extra hard, the more she practices, the more she feels confident in that she can give a good performance. she’s never done a concept like this before, which makes her a bit nervous, but, practice makes perfect.
she gives a nod “it’’s not exactly a long period of time we get to practice. i can learn the lyrics and choreograph in the time, but it feels difficult to figure out how to do a whole new concept in that time, my group only ever did cute or girl crush theme” she hums, takes a bite of her kimbap too. “if i pretend to be confident enough, will i eventually turn confident?”.

seira didn’t think she’d brought a bad performance to the table, but her rank had dropped, and she was now placed very last. it was a bit scary, she’d worked so hard. she feared elimination, so this time around she practiced even harder. came in early, stayed late, practiced every second she could, she wanted to prove she deserved to be here, she wanted to not get eliminated.
seira wasn’t that bad of a dancer, but this was a concept she’d never tried before, hence she was a bit nervous. she finds herself with fellow team member ara, the two girls practicing dance together. “for this part, could you help me with facial expressions?”, “i think i’m dancing well enough, but it’s missing something?”.
