The Night That Changed Your Life (jatp)

Julie and the Phantoms x reader

Warnings: mentions of character death and ghosts

You were one of Julie’s best friends, second only to Flynn. So when Julie joined a mysterious hologram band, you were the second person to know what was really going on. Truth be told, you might not have found if you hadn’t caught Julie talking to herself in the hallway that day.

You were a year older than the two best friends, but had connected with them through your shared music class. Before Julie’s mother passed away, you spend a lot of time at their house where Julie’s mom taught you how to play the piano. Personally, you thought you were never going to get it, but Julie’s mom had some kind of magic in her that made you become proficient.

After her mother passed away, you only saw Julie and Flynn during the monthly movie nights (that was if Julie didn’t cancel), in the hallways or your music class. And when Julie was kicked out of the music program, that fell away too. So when she got back in, you were ecstatic. Not questioning the sudden appearance of her hologram band, you went to congratulate her. Only to find her talking to… the air?

“Jules?” You questioned after a moment of her talking to the empty air like it was talking back to her.

She spun around quickly to face you. “Y/N. Hi. Hi there. You.”

You frowned at her strange behavior. “Hey. Were you talking to someone?”

“What? No. No just… talking to myself.” She shrugged, laughing uncomfortably.

“Sure…” You said, not quite comforted by the fact she had been talking to herself. “I just wanted to congratulate you. On the performance, and getting back in the program.”

“Oh thanks.” She smiled. “Did you uhm… Did you see Flynn?” You shook your head. “Okay, I should probably go find her. I’ll see you later, okay?” With that Julie left.

It was definitely the weirdest interaction with Julie that you had ever had. And after a moment of doubting whether it was a good idea, you got out your phone and texted Flynn that you needed to talk to her. Julie’s dad had told the both of you to let him know if you were worried about Julie, but you didn’t want to tell on Julie for nothing. So you decided to check how Flynn felt about the situation before you did anything.

Flynn let you know that she was going to see Julie that evening, and told you to show up half an hour after her, so you could figure this all out with Julie.

When you showed up to the house, you could hear music from the garage. So instead of going to the front door you went there, like you were used to before Julie’s mom passed away. The music stopped before you got to the garage. You knocked and called out for your friends. You could hear Flynn’s voice on the other side before the door opened. The two girls greeted you with odd smiles.

“Hey…” You said, looking between the two. “Everything alright here?”

“Yeah, yeah. Perfect.” They said unsynchronized.

You nodded. “Okay. So, can I come in?” The two exchanged looks before letting you in. You sat down on the couch while Julie and Flynn had a hushed argument near the door. Deciding to let them figure out whatever they didn’t want you to overhear, you looked around the room. Nothing seemed very odd. Until you saw something that couldn’t be right. “Uh… Jules? Why is your notebook floating?” Both girls immediately looked around at you and then at the notebook that immediately dropped to the ground. “Is this another one of your hologram tricks?” You asked, confused.

The girls shared a silent argument as they looked at each other, before Flynn, apparently, won. “Actually, they’re not holograms.” She said as she sat down next to you on the couch.

You frowned, looking from her to Julie. “So what are they?”

“They’re ghosts.” Julie finally explained.

They proceeded to explain the situation to you. The band even played some music to prove the point to you. It was the wildest night of your life, but by the end, you were sure that they were indeed ghosts.

The performance at the dance was the brilliant idea of both Flynn and you. While Flynn took on most of the marketing, you ended up doing most of the planning and actual setting up. Far too many balloons were blown up that night, but it was all worth it to see Julie happy again.

So it crushed you when the band didn’t show up. It crushed you to see Julie soo disappointed. And it angered you that the boys would just stand her up like that. After Flynn suggested an ice cream night at her place, you were all in for a bit of unwinding. You had to head home first though. So you left early, telling the girls you would meet them at Julie’s house. Your house was just two streets away from Julie’s house, and Flynn’s was a little ways further. So you usually met up at Julie’s to go to Flynn’s together.

When you arrived at Julie’s you heard noise coming from the garage. If Flynn and Julie were already there, they had been fast. Going into the garage you left the door open behind you.

The source of the noise became apparent. The band was there. “Here you idiots are.” You scoffed at them. All three turned around to look at you. “You were supposed to be at the dance! How could you just stand Julie up like that?” You shook your head. “I just can’t believe you. That girl had the courage to perform again after a year and you completely bailed on her. The whole school was…”

“Wait.” Luke finally interrupted you. “You can see us?” From his flabbergasted face, you could tell he was clearly not getting how angry you were at them.

“Are you even listening to me?” You huffed.

There was a noise behind you, Flynn and Julie had arrived. “Y/N? What are you doing?” Julie asked.

You pointed at the band. “I’m scolding the boys for what they did to you.” You clarified.

After a moment of silence, during which Julie frowned deeply, she asked: “You can see them?”

Luke motioned his hand. “That’s what I asked.”

“Yeah.” You said, still unaware.

“But we’re not making any music…” Reggie mumbled.

Alex looked right at you. “You shouldn’t be able to see us if we’re not making music with Julie.”

The room was silent for a moment as everyone processed the facts. You hadn’t been able to see the boys when they weren’t making music before. So what had changed?

Slowly a heavy sense of realization sunk in your chest. “Oh no…”

Everyone was still looking at you as you turned on your heels and bolted out of the garage.

“Y/N!” Julie called after you, but you wouldn’t stop.

You ran as fast as your feet would carry you. Running down Julie’s street and then down the street that seperated her street from yours. The asphalt was wet from the rain previously that evening, but it didn’t bother you.

As you turned into your own street, you immediately slowed down as you saw the lights. Blue and red. Bright flashing lights. Cars blocking the street halfway down. The sound was insistent, but it fell on deaf ears to you as you looked on.

The others caught up to you as you stood there, staring motionless.

“Y/N.” Julie attempted to put her hand on your shoulder.

Your worst suspicions were confirmed when her hand went right through.

“Y/N?” Julie’s voice was full of disbelief.

You closed your eyes and sank to your knees on the wet asphalt.

There was a car that had nearly hit you as you’d made your way across the street from your house. It was going way too fast in the wet weather and you had cursed at the driver, which you had presumed was probably drunk, as you hurried further to Julie’s house.

Only the car hadn’t missed you.

As Alex, Reggie and Luke sank down on their knees beside you and put their arms around you, effectively hugging you, there was no more doubt.

You were a ghost now.

EP8: Alex’ song

Julie invited you to come to a rehearsal, not unlike many times before. Except this time the rehearsal space was not set up. Neither was the keyboard. And Flynn wasn’t there either.

“I thought you were rehearsing.” You asked confused.

“Well, actually, today is a little different. Come sit down.” Julie led you to a chair set up facing the piano bench so you could see Julie as she played the piano. “Just listen and watch.” She said before starting to play.

Not long after she started playing, the hologram of Alex appeared beside her, playing some of the keys. Though slowly and focused, like someone who did not really know how to play piano.

Though when Alex started to sing, all other thoughts were cleared from your mind. As it was just as if he was singing to you.

The way he seemed to look at you. The words he sang.

Alex had written the song with Luke and Julie. And had rehearsed the song with Julie all week to make sure it was perfect. But when he was singing it to you it just didn’t feel like enough. He could see in your eyes that you believed that this moment was just temporary, fleeting. And most importantly not real.

And he could no longer let you believe that. He could no longer let you believe that you were alone.

“Y/N.” He sighed.

You looked at him with wide eyes. Had he just said your name? That was not possible.

“Alex.” Reggie whispered to him. This was not part of the plan.

“Julie just keep playing.” Alex said to Julie as he lifted his hands from the piano. He continued to sing to you.

You were now thoroughly confused. Yet you were sure now, he was singing to you. And you were getting the feeling he could see you. He stood up and kneeled in front of you. And it felt so real.

That was until he reached out and touched your hand, and you knew it was real.

Tears started to roll down both your and Alex’ cheeks as you held each other’s hands tightly.

“You are my sibling, Y/N. I may be a ghost, but I will be here for you always, forever.” Alex promised you through his tears.

Charles blamed himself, he should have been there to protect you. But he was gone, enjoying the freedom that the serum had given him. Enjoying the renewed use of his legs. Perhaps if he hadn’t taken the serum, if he had had his powers, if he had been at the mansion, maybe then you wouldn’t have gotten hurt. And you wouldn’t be fighting for your life.

Erik didn’t think twice before rushing to the hospital after he heard the news. He didn’t let the fact that Charles would be there stop him. Or the fact that Charles still hated him for the accident that crippled him. He only thought about you, and how much he wanted to be there for you. He knew you would get through the surgery, you simply had to. He couldn’t lose you.

EP7: Alex’ Dilemma

You started hanging around with Julie and Flynn more often. You watched the performances, and sometimes the rehearsals. It was great to see your brother and his band performing. Even it was just a hologram. It was him. And when he sang, you could imagine him speaking to you. You often closed your eyes, trying to commit his voice to your memory.

At night you would lie in your bed and cry, listening to the cd you had once found in Alex’ old room. The cd had been played so much that it had degraded. But you could make out the sound of the drums when you closed your eyes.

----------------------------------------

Alex spent many days following you around when he wasn’t at rehearsal or with Willie. He would see you cry. He would hear you when you talked to the picture of him on your nightstand. Telling him about your day or how much you wished he was there. It hurt him to see you like this. Unable to do something. Unable to even speak to you.

He was distracted while he was with Willie, and the other boy took notice. He let Alex pour out his heart to him, everything he felt and needed to get off his chest. Still it didn’t give him any rest.

It eventually started affecting his ability to play the drums. He would miss a beat or play off rhythm. At first they chalked it up to Alex needing to get warmed up, but when it continued Julie finally decided to stop the rehearsal.

“Alex, are you okay?” Luke asked as he put down his guitar.

Alex sighed. “Sorry guys, I’m just distracted.”

“Thinking of Willie?” Reggie grinned.

“No. No, I’m thinking of Y/N.” Alex brushed a hand through his hair. “They’re soo sad. I just… I wish I could tell them I’m here. That they’re not alone.” They could all see the pain it caused him to see Y/N like that.

Luke nodded. He knew the feeling. But he thought it would be worse for his parents if they knew he was still around. Maybe this was different.

Reggie walked over to Alex and put a hand on his shoulder in support. Alex gave him a melancholy smile.

“I may have an idea.” Julie said.

EP6: The Truth

His sibling. Alex stared at you dumbfounded. He had a sibling. You were obviously born after he passed away. But you looked like him. The more he looked, the more he knew it was true. You had the same eyes. The same look in them. And you had brushed off Luke’s mother’s inquires into the well-being of your parents.

It all made sense. How they knew the hologram band that Julie used was Sunset curve, probably they recognized him from a picture. How they knew Luke and Reggie’s parents. The way they seemed to always be drumming their fingers against the table or their leg. The look in their eyes that he’d seen when they’d watched the video at Luke’s house.

Luke and Reggie were looking between the two siblings, dumbfounded. Mouths wide open. “Dude, they’re hot.” They both said in unison.

Alex glared at them. “That’s my sibling you’re talking about.”

Flynn was likewise flabbergasted. “I thought you said they didn’t have any siblings.” She said to Julie.

You sighed and sat down on the couch. “I was born years after the boys died. No one knows.” You drummed your thumbs against your knees. “Except Luke and Reggie’s parents.”

“And yours.” Julie added as she sat down beside you carefully.

“I don’t speak to my parents anymore.” You admitted. “We fought a lot. About me, but also about Alex. I moved out when I was sixteen. I live with my aunt now.”

Julie put her hand on top of yours in a comforting motion. “I’m sorry.”

“Don’t be.” You looked up. “They were impossible to live with. They refused to talk about Alex. At all.”

Flynn finally sat down. “It must have been weird when you saw him in that video.”

You nodded. “A bit. But it mostly made me happy. I’d only seen a few photographs of him before.” You bit your lip. “And there was my brother, rocking on the drums.”

Julie suddenly noticed that Alex had left the room. “Can you excuse me for a second?”

Outside the garage she found Alex, alone. “Are you okay?” She asked.

Alex looked up at her, tears in his eyes. “I have a sibling.” He smiled through his tears. “I’ve never had a sibling before. And they can’t even see me.”

EP5: Family

Julie and Flynn proceeded to show the pair of parents the video of Julie and the Phantoms that had gone viral online.

Luke kept looking at his mother, tears in his eyes as he saw his mother watch the video and get tears in her eyes as well.

Reggie would never admit it, but he had tears in his eyes as well. Especially as he noticed that his parents were holding hands as they watched the video. They hadn’t divorced.

Alex was strangely disappointed that his parents weren’t there. Though he knew he should be relieved.

He noticed you looking at the video with a strange look in your eyes. He knew there was something more to you, but he just didn’t know what.

To everyone’s relief, both sets of parents gave permission to use footage of their sons for the performances of Julie and the Phantoms. And agreed that they didn’t need to be named. It was enough for them if only they knew.

The group then visited the nearby graveyard where they laid flowers on the graves of the three boys. Even though Alex’s parents weren’t there, his grave had the same amount of flowers as those of the other boys. Three graves, side by side, of three boys gone too soon.

They said goodbye to the parents and went back to Julie’s house from the graveyard.

“Thank you.” You said all of a sudden.

Julie looked surprised. “For what?”

“For asking permission.” You said, looking at the ground. “For giving the boys the spotlight that they deserved.”

“We don’t have everyone’s permission yet.” Flynn pointed out. “We haven’t asked Alex’ parents yet.”

You huffed. “Don’t worry about that. You have all the permission you need.”

Flynn was a stubborn one however. “But Alex’ family hasn’t given permission yet.”

“They have.” You said.

“When?” Flynn frowned.

You glared at her. “They just have, okay?”

Alex highly doubted that his parents would give permission for such a thing. Or that they would even hear out Y/N when they asked them.

Luke nudged Julie. “Who exactly gave you permission?”

They saw you cave under the pressure. “His sibling did.”

Alex frowned, Reggie and Luke giving him confused looks as well. “I don’t have a…”

Julie, however, caught on fast. “You’re his sibling.”

EP4: The Parents

“Julie, I think this is a bad idea.” Luke tried to convince her. They were on their way to ask permission of their parents. Julie, Flynn, you and, unknown to you, the boys.

“If she tells anyone that you guys are dead, we’re in major trouble.” Julie sighed. She wouldn’t be able to explain how she got the footage that you believed she had used to create the holograms. Luke and Julie fought out the argument in silence, until Luke relented.

Reggie was the only one of the group excited. He was pretty sure he was going to see his parents again. Even if they were probably divorced by now.

Alex was dreading this moment the most out of all of them. He hadn’t spoken to or seen his parents since he came out to them. He wasn’t sure they’d be any more accepting now.

“Are you ready?” You asked Julie and Flynn as you stopped in front of the Patterson home.

Julie looked so nervous that she seemed ready to puke. “As ready as I’ll ever be.”

You nodded and knocked on the door. It didn’t take long from mister Paterson to open the door. “Y/N.” He said cheerfully.

“Mister Patterson.” You smiled.

“Oh please, you know you can just call me Mitch.” He waved you in. “Come on in. The others are in the living room.”

“Thanks. Actually, I brought two people along, I hope you don’t mind.” You said. “They have something they want to show you.” Luke’s dad was already halfway into the living room when he called back that that was just fine with him.

Together with Julie and Flynn you followed him. Once you entered the room, you were quickly spotted by Luke’s mother who came to hug you. “Y/N, so good to see you.”

“Mrs Patterson.” You hugged her back.

“Oh please, it’s Emily.” She reminded you. As soon as she let you go, Reggie’s mother was there to hug you. When Luke’s mom noticed Julie, she frowned. “You’re the girl who lives in the house where the boys used to practice.”

Julie blushed and received two surprised looks from Flynn and you. She had neglected to mention that she had met the Patterson’s before. “Uhm… yes. There’s actually something I want to show you.”
