soul reaper au

soul reapers are categorized into two separate groups - guardians & guides

guides are the ones who collect souls once they pass on from their mortal flesh

guardians hunt demons before they can eat souls to gain more power.

guides & guardians are decided when they enter the soul reaper academy in the afterlife. the true form of their scythe is classified as either guide or guardian with guides usually being smaller, elegant and more fragile ie. weak. while guardian scythes are larger, austere decoratively, but more varied in blade design.

the two are pretty much kept entirely separate as killing demons makes guardians more of a target & guides are considered unequipped to take on demons.

sam wilson is an “Aware” ex-guide. during a mission to retrieve a soul with his partner, they were caught off-guard by a high-level demon. his partner died trying to buy time for sam to take the soul and leave. unable to run, same was forced to fight with his scythe, redwing, and killed the demon - thus tainting his scythe and being made “Aware”.

sam was recommended to retire and teach at the academy. ostracized from fellow guides and considered unapproachable by guardians. until steve rogers, captain of the guardians asks him for help with a special project. they might be able to kill demons and rescue the souls of their victims, but its a huge risk and not exactly sanctioned by the council.

worst of all, he pairs sam with bucky, a rescued soul reaper with demonic powers and an inability to keep a partner for more than a few weeks at a time.

a sort of re-draw of my earlier falcon + winter soldier piece from a while back. just decided to continue taking liberties with their costumes because trying to make sense of the scraps of concept art that we already have is worth just as much.

the thing that sucks about liking a less popular ship is that you dont get all the wacky, weirdly specific aus that all the popular ships get. i wish i could draw/write them all. i’ve been thinking about the sort o fantasy viking/magic-y aus you would get sometimes.
