1760 Grover Avenue (Magnolia)
BY EMMA MACDONALD
“In the poem ‘1760 Grover Avenue (Magnolia)’ Emma tells the story of her infancy and childhood growing up, and being raised by the two most prominent women in her life; her mother, and aunt. Using the metaphor of the magnolia tree, Emma speaks of her mother and aunt nurturing her into the woman she is today, while comparing her and the women to the magnolia tree, and how they nurtured the tree to full bloom.”
On 1760 Grover Avenue there is a magnolia tree in the front yard.
It hasn't bloomed in years
Only waits patiently for something, for someone
To help nurture it into bloom
On 1760 Grover Avenue
Sits a house, with hollow bones and creaky floorboards
With mini slurpee sized sticky hands
And sticky faces
It was my first haven
And if I look back hard enough
I transport myself back home and back to where my nurturing first began
I see the haven in my mum
She is third trimester and long copper hair
She is young newlywed and young heart and wild eyes
And can't wait to grow her garden in the backyard and grow memories in the new home
My mum, is determined to see that magnolia bloom
Spends her days,
Sage smudging and blessing that house
Planting her seeds and sowing her roots
She became attached to that house
To that magnolia
And so did my aunt
She, flits around the kitchen like a hummingbird
Chopping and stirring and tasting
She drinks in all the nectar she can take
Her fingers are looms
Quickly weaving themselves through her raven hair
She still wears the same patterned skirts in the summer
Ones so billowy you would think it’s a ball gown
My aunt, always has soft spoken answers
my mother, has pot clanging questions
These women, have steamed themselves into full bloom,
Giving me every last drop of nurture they have
nurtured me, into the woman I am
nurtured that magnolia tree to full bloom
On april 12th
the day of my birth
I don't think it's a coincidence
That the old growth tree
And the youngblood daughter
decided to bloom on the same day
We later moved,
1790 Grover avenue
Different garden, different kitchen, no magnolia
And when spring rolled around,
And my first birthday was beaming parents and beaming aunt
That magnolia did not bloom
The house, stood empty, quiet
That magnolia did not bloom that spring,
And it hasn't bloomed in a long, long time
See, my mother and my aunt are so much more than who they think they are
I see them as the magnolia
Tall, patient, wise
thriving with such grace their fingertips petals and arms branches
They know what it’s like to be uprooted
so every time their roots sink deeper into themselves and their lives
They know it’s for the better
I only wish to be half the woman they are
I only dream of soft spoken answers and pot clanging questions
Of looms for fingers
And to become my own natural wonder
I have yet to reach full bloom
For that magnolia, on 1760 Grover avenue has not bloomed since the day of my birth
And I know, I believe
That I took the nurture with me

“ME & SIS” BY ASIA LE MACKAY
“'me & sis' is meant to explore the materiality and temporality between the personal development between my family background. The thread displays intervals (between objects, between ideas, between people) and this is an aspect that I am still discovering through process. This piece demonstrates a present exploration of race, gender, relationships and the dichotomy between the two ethnic backgrounds that make up parts of my identity, while still being aesthetically pleasing.”

AMY BRERETON
“My artwork tends to be very dark, surreal, and emotional, and explores themes relating to mental health, such as anxiety and depression, which most people including myself have suffered from at some point in their life. The purpose of my work is to empathize with others that suffer from mental illness, and help them to realize that they are never alone in their battles. I also wish to raise mental health awareness, as mental health is equally important as physical health but is often neglected in main stream society. I believe artwork to be an important form of meditation and expression, as the act of creating artwork draws one self into the present and allows one to develop a deeper understanding of their inner self. The imagery in my illustrations presents my unconscious mind, while taking inspiration from psychology and concepts relating to the abstraction of time. Recently I have been reading Freud's The Interpretation of Dreams and taking inspiration from that. My work also often explores notions of feminism, and is highly influenced by music. I would describe my pieces as being dark and beautiful simultaneously, while taking inspiration from tattoo flash and surrealist art, such as the work of Salvador Dali. Most of my work is done in ink, pencil, or acrylic paint. I also enjoy experimenting with pencil crayon and collage. I have done a lot of collaborative work with local bands in Vancouver and British Columbia, such as with the bands Frogpile and MO/A. I am also a writer and contributor to Lotusland Magazine, an arts and culture magazine in Vancouver. Currently I am pursuing illustration, but in the future I wish to become an art therapist. I believe that artistic practices to have the potential to help a person overcome personal adversities, and help one become enlightened. The purpose of my existence and my work is simply to help those struggling with mental health.”

AVACADO GIRLS BY JAY KIM
“Jay is an effervescent young artist from Vancouver, BC. Although born in Calgary, AB, she grew up and lived her whole life in the suburbs of Vancouver. Art has always been a passion of hers, and ever since a young age, she has aspired to grow up to be an artist. She is still in the process of exploring and expanding herself, her style, and the world around her. Jay's artworks often touch on her vehement feelings as an intersectional feminist and on many occasions, are reflections of her capricious teenage states of mind. Ultimately, her goal is to have fun with the art she makes. One of her favourite activities is dancing alone to music in her room as she is painting. Roses are her favourite flowers, and when she is not making art, she can be found flipping through outdated National Geographic magazines.”

UNTITLED BY MADDY KEEN
“This piece was intended to be a quick, thoughtless project, but as I flipped through magazines and cut out images, an idea started to form. This piece basically is a shout out to all women who feel as if they need to fit a certain image by dressing, acting, and speaking in a specific fashion to be accepted in society.”
