Sometimes, Salma bursts in tears as she struggles with her homework. She works hard to catch up after spending years out of school because her family was displaced twice. Less than 2 years ago, when she moved to Mazar, she could not read or write. Now 13, Salma goes to middle school with her two sisters, hoping to become “a doctor that treats people for free”. She knows poverty too well herself. I followed Salma, Omedah (from Faryab, shown before) and Sakina for @lemondedesadosmag to show French readers their age what it means being an Afghan teenage girl one year after the Taliban return. The three live in different places and face different challenges. For Salma, it is poverty and the fear of not being good enough in class. She lives in a house much too small for the family of 18. Her grandfather sleeps in the hall under a mosquito net, sick, but too poor to see a doctor. Her brothers had had to stop school to work—one sells vegetables, the other works as a cleaner in a hospital. Her father has lost his job as a tailor. Still, the family does its best so the three daughters can have a different future. “I don’t want my daughters to be illiterate like me, I want them to study as much as they can” says their mother Diana. Salma will not give up. She follows a very tight schedule starting at 4am, which include, of course, a lot of homework, helping her mother with housework and cooking, but also jumprope—“to become taller”. Note - girls do not keep their faces covered during class—they did this time because of the. #Balkh #Afghanistan Photo & text: Elise Blanchard @eliseblchrd. Gul Ahmad, a survivor of the recent earthquake in Gyan district of Paktika province, Afghanistan. ‘I Survived’ is the title of a series of portraits that I photographed in Gayan district of Paktika Province just a couple of days after the horrific earthquake that took the lives of over 1000 of my countrymen. This is my personal tribute to honor their lives and to celebrate the lives of all the survivors. You too can share this photo with your own message. #Paktika #Afghanistan Photo & words by Nadir Naim @nadnaim_photography #everydayafghanistan #portrait #photography #afghan #everydayeverywhere #earthquake #catastrophe #afghanboy #survivors #everydaypaktika #eyes #blue #portraitphotography #everydayasia #documentary #afghanpeople (at Gayan, Paktika, Afghanistan) https://www.instagram.com/p/Che-G21tO_m/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Yesterday marked one year since the Taliban took control of Afghanistan and 332 days since they banned education for the vast majority of secondary school girls across the country, first citing a “technical issue” related to uniforms and this last week, citing “religious issues” and “cultural sensitivities.” Many of the country’s religious scholars say it’s a political decision rather than an Islamic one. It's unclear if and when high school girls will be allowed to go back again. Today, their younger sisters go to class without them. After 40 years of war, some girls are receiving their first education with schools opening in areas where they never existed before. In some, the Taliban’s daughters are receiving their first education. 15 year old girls are in first grade, learning the alphabet alongside 5 year olds. A raft of cultural and logistical obstacles had stopped the students' older sisters and mothers from attending school before. Now, these girls teach their mothers what they have learnt in their classes. As always, no two situations are the same in Afghanistan. They differ from province to province and district to district. But one thing is clear, these girls are glad to be here. After grade 6, these girls’ futures will be in the hands of Afghanistan’s new government, and it will be infinitely more difficult without the tools they need to find their paths forward. There remains no sensical justification for the ban on their older sisters' education. Afghanistan remains the only country in the world to ban girls from receiving an education. #Kunar #Afghanistan Photo & words by Lynzy Billing @lynzybilling in July 2022. #everydaykunar #school #afghan #girls #letafghangirlslearn #reportage #reportagespotlight #photojournalism #afghanwomen #everydayafghanistan #afghangirl #everydayeverywhere #everydayasia #reportagephotography (at Kunar) https://www.instagram.com/p/ChUraipNOg_/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Sabsa Gul, 40, reads a woman’s palm in Kabul, Afghanistan. About 3-5 women visit the fortune teller every day, with most of them asking about their marriages or work opportunities. “Increasingly, women are asking me to make it possible for them to leave #Afghanistan,” Gul said. “They don’t want to stay here.” She charges about 30 Afghani (about 35 cents) per session and estimates there are up to 60 #women like her in the #Afghan capital. Gul is a Jogi - a semi-nomadic community that has long been marginalised. Many Jogis continue to be #stateless to this day, with their children not going to school. #Kabul #Afghanistan Photo by Stefanie Glinski @stephglinski #fortuneteller #fortune #afghan #everydaykabul #everydayafghanistan #palmreading #photographer #storytelling #everydayeverywhere #reportagespotlight #afghanwomen #afghan #everydayasia (at Kabul, Afghanistan) https://www.instagram.com/p/Cgn6QCiNLq7/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

There's no panacea for Afghanistan's raft of social, political, and humanitarian issues. However, kneecapping 50% of the population for no justifiable reason is only a recipe for more shattered lives and stifled futures. Restricting access to education on the basis of gender, or for any other reason, is a detriment to the entire country. It effects the economy, it effects security—it effects everything. The girls currently missing out on the education they deserve are more aware of this than anyone else. It's important to recognize that the reality of girls access to education in Afghanistan is more complex than click-bait headlines make it out to be. Many girls (and boys) had no access to education long before the Taliban came to power, whether because of social/family conservatism or a simple lack of access to schools and teachers. Some, both girls and boys, have access to classes now when they didn't under the republic government, often because it was previously too dangerous to travel to school. In many districts, local communities have just as much influence over the running (or closing) of schools as the Taliban government does. I've been to plenty of communities where local Taliban have basically adopted a "sort yourselves out" approach to schooling because they don't have the capacity or desire to get involved in the process. As long as the communities don't do anything that rocks the boat, no-one bothers them. In other areas, provincial or district-level Taliban have indeed stepped in to enforce their own rules, including bans and closing entire schools. Where the Taliban have banned girls from school, they've never offered any sensical justification, because there's clearly none to be made. There is no conceivable reason to actively prevent these girls from reaching their full potential. Every kid (and adult) deserves access to the tools they need to live a happy and fulfilled life. When this access is denied, talents and passions go undiscovered, and the successes of current and future generations begin to melt into the ether. #Zabul #Afghanistan Photo & text by Kern Hendricks on June 27, 22.
