Baby’s First Joystick
Not being able to remember the first video game I ever played has actually upset me for quite a while. I have foggy memories of gaming with friends and cousins before I myself actually had anything to play games on. Although, my house had internet before a lot of other people so I may have been playing games there. I’m not going to count flash games on Newgrounds and Sports Illustrated Kids’ games featuring Buzz Beamer as my first video games.
Tumblr media
I can easily remember the first game I ever owned. It came with the first computer that wasn’t merely a hand-me-down from my technologically superior uncle’s house. It was 1998 and we had just returned from our expensive trip to CompUSA. While my parents attempted to decipher every single word of each EULA and cautiously clicked ‘Next’, I kept myself busy by sorting through the included software. Bookshelf? Psh, who reads. Encarta? What does that even mean? Microsoft Money..! “Hey mom does this print money?” “No.” “Well that’s a crappy name then.” Quicken Basic? The disc looks pretty but doesn’t appear to be a game. As I threw each let down across the room (most likely I set them gently back down on the table) I grew more and more wary of the fact that all of this software was created for grown ups. Until I saw her. The most beautiful two words I’d ever seen. Even my 7 year old brain knew that combining “Racer” and “Moto” couldn’t, in any way, be the title of a boring grown up thing. And thus, Delphine Software International’s Moto Racer was my first video game.
Tumblr media
I’d love to go back and find out what my times were for each track. I preferred the dirt bikes but had no problem using street bikes. I spent a lot of time with Moto Racer and it became one of the few time trial games I’ve ever concentrated on shaving milliseconds from my track times. I remember knowing the ins and outs of every track, whether I played them forward or reverse. A UFO could be seen on the desert track; I loved to it point out for the less attentive people I forced to play. I am curious if my adolescent point of view made me out to be the world record setter on each track, or if I actually would have held up to any high level players.
As much as I love knowing the first game I ever owned, it’s the lack of clarity surrounding my original gaming experience that I’m missing; and I’d really like to know what it was. I have a collection of early memories, and since my brain doesn’t keep a perfectly chronicled timeline of minuscule events for some reason, I am unable to pinpoint which came first.
Tumblr media
In our school’s computer lab we had Logical Journey of Zoombinis, an educational classic, Connections: It’s a Mind Game, the game I played whenever we had the option and also DinoPark Tycoon, the one that I believe we were introduced to first. Based on the release dates (1996, 1995 and 1993 respectively) I think it is safe to assume DinoPark was one of my earliest gaming experiences. But I doubt it was my first. I most likely played DinoPark a few years after its release, I don’t seem to recall which grade’s curriculum dinosaur theme park business management was apart of.
Tumblr media
One of the kids I hung out with quite a bit growing up had an SNES. The two games I remember repeatedly playing during my many stays at his house are Super Mario World and Super Star Wars.  Released in 1992, Super Star Wars is out earlier than DinoPark Tycoon making it a fore-runner for first game I ever played, but would he have gotten the game as a result of the hype surrounding the 1997 Star Wars theatrical re-releases? Am I confusing what years we played these games? Super Mario World was included with the purchase of a SNES, giving it a 1991 released date. It’s hard to imagine that he had a SNES right at launch and, to add further to my confusion, I believe we met in kindergarten in 1994.
A classic in every 90s kid’s journey through adolescence was murdering 3 of your friends in 007 Goldneye for n64.  Released in 1997 it isn’t possible that this would have been first. However, the ghost of n64 haunts my brain begging for a shout out because whenever I sit and wander the depths of my memory banks looking for gaming related events I am constantly brought back to basements, juicy juice, dino chicken nuggets, CRT TVs and Goldeneye. So here’s your shout out, Nintendo 64, now go away and let me think.
Tumblr media
In 1993 Mortal Kombat was ported to Genesis. We were at my Uncle’s house for some reason (the hippy one, not the technologically advanced one) and the adults were all outside talking about the stock exchange or some other lame grown-upy stuff. I was in the living room watching my older cousin play sega. A+B+A+C+A+B+B. My young innocent eyes were wide with awe and intrigue. He handed me the controller and I played until I crashed. I fell asleep with visions of spinal cords and maimed kombatants dancing in my head. Part of me thinks Mortal Kombat really was my first gaming experience; it would explain quite a bit. I don’t have a time frame for when I would have played this game, but my cousin is 6 or 7 years older than me and it wouldn’t be strange for him to have had that game around release day. It’s also the only early gaming memory that I have of which I only played the title in question once.
The only other option I have is from yet another uncle; SkiFree from 1991. My uncle had one of those desks where the monitor was under glass and you looked down into it. He also had a trackball. What a horrible experience that must have been for me. Every trip to his apartment resulted in me virtually hitting the slopes and trying to out manoeuvre the abominable snow monster.
Tumblr media
I can’t be sure, and I only just remembered the game during my initial outline for this piece, but SkiFree very well could be my first played videogame. Seeing as how I still don’t have concrete evidence to support that claim though, for now I’m going to settle on Mortal Kombat as the first game I ever played. It just makes me sound so much more rad. And since writing this article hasn’t helped me figure out the question I’ve been pondering for years I think I’m done trying to solve it. Finish Him.

Everyone keeps talking about Microsoft's Project Scorpio and the Playstation 4 Neo and they keep saying "XBOX HAS 6 TERAFLOPS! SONY HAS 4.2!"....
