not to weigh too much in on this, i do like the distinctions but not very much of a preference - and my own personal preferences don't have a lot to do with what i'm mentioning next.
but just wanted to take the chance to be nerdy, and point out another possible origin - that the / was originally a way of writing out a fraction (like for example 1/3 or 1/2 ) and if writing a fraction - the first number, or name in this case, is ON TOP. now i don't know which origins are the correct one or how different ideas influenced the ship tagging, but just throwing this out there as part of how it was explained to me back a while ago!
even though i don't think almost anyone does it anymore, i still absolutely use the "name order indicates who is topping" style of shipnames. there absolutely is a difference in dynamic if i say my story is ship A/B and if i say it is ship B/A. it's just a fun and (to me) intuitive way to describe ship dynamics
--
I think the people who used to do it still do it. It was just used in some parts of fandom and not others. Most of the people who built AO3 and established its foundational culture had never used this and still don't, so it's less visible today if one's main way of interacting with fic is AO3.

Commissions / Fundraising Post!
**************************************************************
Hello! Basically the thing is I'm a bit short of funds, and could really use some proper, new binders and some other compression garments. Plus some other daily supplies perhaps.
So I'm opening up commissions for gift cards. First, from Underworks, and Second, if there's any more interest and so forth - from Amazon.Com.
( My goal for Underworks is $80 in cards, so I can get the free shipping and not have to worry about calculating shipping. )
I am offering Short Stories, Graphics Edits, and Tutoring / Proofreading / Homework Help.
***
So, for a $40 gift card, I will offer to write you two 250+ word short stories, fanfic or original fic your choice.
For an $80 gift card, I will write you four 250+ word short stories OR one 900+ word long short story.
I've written for Lord of the Rings, other Tolkien media, Narnia, Homestuck, The Dark is Rising, Hermitcraft/Life SMP Series, Cultist Simulator, World of Warcraft, Guild Wars 2, Shakespeare Plays, Dracula, and Dr Faustus. - And I can also do original fic, especially sci fi, fantasy, historical romance, and furry.
Graphics edits can be negotiated individually.
For tutoring, you can get an hour of tutoring online / in voice call, split up in sections however you'd like. I can do math up to Calculus 1, biology, meteorology, geology, and environmental sciences, history, English lit, or I can help with very beginner's Spanish or Welsh.
Background for the tutoring: I have a science degree and have done paid tutoring and been a uni TA before.

Warnings: for some blood, and gore.
~
Mina drew a quick, shaky breath as she felt her blood go drip, drip, drip, into the cup. "Just an experiment." she repeated to herself. The room was narrow, but the bedstand was filled with a perfusion, a bouquet of flowers, roses mainly, and the windows were open. And Van Helsing's large presence was there. The colors of the roses somewhat unnervingly mirrored the blood spilled into the white porcelain cup - in that cup as Van Helsing drew some of the blood into his syringe and slid the needle into Lucy's arm as she rested. She was propped up, her gold hair half undone in a sea of white sheets. Mina took her wrist softly and could feel Lucy's pulse, the blood of three or four people there, thrumming through it.

She always kept half an eye on the horizon line.
How could she not - when people used to call her Proserpine? A fitting enough name for the dryad, for the spirit that she was.
Rhodes was a sweet little harbor, and it let her spend some of her time in her physical form, fish like and rolling in the waves, the frequent storms allowing the sea spray to wash up onto the land - and as the water returned to the sea, letting her taste what it had touched, the sweet honey of wildflowers, the strength of lavender, and so many times, the green leaves and fruit of olives, and the holy bay laurel that had once crowned olympians. Sometimes she walked more quietly and near invisibly in the night, a ghost on the wind, and drank in the scent of people's juices, heard the prayers of the fishermen, drank in the scent of steam rising off of people's coffee. She was especially grateful to Turkey for that. But in all her travels she never quite forgot her other purpose.
So when the days shortened, and when the sun set on the exact point on the horizon, that it aligned with the statue on the island in the harbor and cast it's shadow onto the old mark in the rock, the alignment of it went through her like an arrow. And she felt her muscles tense and her form become more sturdy, bigger, longer, as she prepared to dive into the deep.

GG: yaaaaaay!!! GA: Youll Need Somewhere To Keep Them While They Grow
Tumblr media
Vriska would approve.
Also, I hope that water's fresh.
GG: so what is the actual purpose of all this breeding? GG: am i trying to make one really special frog with just the right genetic code or something? GG: sort of like the ULTIMATE FROG :O GA: Actually GA: Yes GA: Thats Exactly What Youre Doing […] GA: Your Objective Is To Breed The Genesis Frog
The Genesis Frog - a phrase I’m willing to bet is capitalized even without Kanaya’s quirk - would fit right in with Bilious Slick's other titles.
I think Jade's literally trying to create Slick, or an iteration of him, and that deriving his genome is crucial to the session's endgame. He's been haunting us for thousands of pages, and his importance is nothing less than absolute.
GA: You Cant Complete The Game Without Doing So GA: Your Entire Mission Depends On Breeding Him
Finally.
Come on, Kanaya, play ball with me here.
What is the purpose of Bilious Slick, the Genesis Frog?
GG: what do we do after i make this big god froggy? GG: does it have something to do with the new universe we create? GA: Most Certainly
...oh my fucking god.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Oh my FUCKING god.
She's deadass, isn't she? She's not being figurative, allegorical or metaphorical. Kanaya is literally saying that if you zoom out far enough from a universe, you'll see Bilious Slick's beady eyes staring back at you. The true shape of reality is a thing that croaks.
Tumblr media
This is why Derse hates him. He's a symbol of Player victory, and Derse's entire raison d'etre is to oppose the Players. The amphibian civil war was signalling the opposing Carapacian attitudes to the creation of a universe.
Tumblr media
This is why Aradia associates Slick with probability. He contains all possibilities because he's made of Paradox Space.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
This is why Vriska was so surprised that John found one in his Land. Creating frogs is an endgame quest, and her own Space Player took weeks to make progress in cloning them.
The Forge hasn't even entered yet, and John's already holding one of the ancestors of his nascent universe.
Tumblr media
And this the answer to the Great Frog Riddle. It's why Slick stands at the peak of every Sburb Temple - because he is its genesis, its purpose and its prize.
Bilious Slick is more than a god – he’s a space for gods to fill.
It's shit like this that makes Homestuck my favorite webcomic of all. The Ultimate Reward - the grand prize of reality's great game - is a fucking frog.

A rock arced down from the sky, shimmering as it burned a bit.The rock came to rest and it chilled, taking on the color of the moon. It lay pressed against the petals of a flower, a simple stem arching out of the ground alongside a few of it's fellow stems filled with feathery green leaves. The flower itself was light and airy, with several soft white petals forming a perfect circle, in other words a daisy. Signals and chemicals ran up and down the plant, as usual, but carrying a new message where the rock rested. Rocks could talk? the little daisy "thought". In any case, it sought a creature associated with the number "77" a number the daisy knew as it was 23 less than the number of petals it had. And it was the color that it was because of it's great origin, the moon that was growing closer day by day.
And it thrummed with a message, and gave the daisy a wild sort of power. The message was meant for that goat horned creature and his companion, but the rock paused it's search to talk with the flower anyway. Soon, in a day or so, - where the rock touched it, the daisy plant bore a fluff ball of dandelion seeds. Fluff and light.
