Writing Advice: How to Create Conflict when Your Characters are Competent.
Featuring Leverage, the ultimate in Competency Porn.
Make them so good it gets them in trouble. So you've got a hacker and he's the best, definitively. Okay, well, one of his fake IDs just got called for jury duty. You pretended to be a psychic so well, someone kidnapped you to talk to a dead crime lord.
Make them targets. You're so good, enemies you didn't even know about are trying to kill you just so they won't have to take you on in your element. You're being blackmailed into doing a thing because you're the only one that can.
Limit the scope of competency. Sure, you're competent as a fighter, but your hacker is in jail and now you have to do his job and you are not competent in that. Yeah, you can climb a building, but do you know what you need to do to not end up in a crevasse while climbing a mountain?
Raise the stakes. Can you handle extracting a orphan being used by a washed up actress to fund her extravagant lifestyle? Yes. But can you handle extracting 30 orphans being used by the Slovenian mob to fund gunrunning? Maybe all you wanted was to get enough money to buy back a house, but instead you have to ruin the company so that all houses they illegally obtained are returned to their rightful owners.
Make others competent, too. Your characters are the best, but are they the best of the best? If you take you enemy down, do you go, too? If you win, does it make them win? Does it get out of hand and make other people start noticing when you're trying to keep your head down? Do they know every trick in the book and know the next move before you make it?
Make others painfully incompetent. Your characters are the best, but are they woefully unprepared for people who are not even good? Can your hologram hacker roll with it when the vital information is on a casset tape? Is the old mentor up to date on the recent technology, or is he going to screw you because he assumes the cops are just as corrupt/incompetent as when he was young?
Have some standards. Specifically, morals that make it impossible for your characters to back out or gets them in trouble for doing things "off-script." You can't leave on the train someone just stole for you because you've got to go back and stop the bad guys from bombing the IRS (even if we don't like them). You wish you could just say no to that assassin contract and leave, but someone's getting assassinated and you have to stop it because you're a good guy.
Bring up the past. Do you think that bad guy you brutally scarred a decade ago is going to carry a grudge? Do you have to save your ex-wife from the bad guy, who may also be her boyfriend, and if you suggest that she'll shut you out and you won't be able to save her or get paid? It's Draaamaaaa, babee.

The thing about Timmy Chalamet is that he’s truly a great actor and he even has good taste in projects and he’s not even overexposed when you calibrate for how overexposed all that group of 25-30 year old big stars are……however something is still off. any time he gets cast in something it feels like that movie instantly turns into a parody of a movie. I cannot explain this

The Prodigal
The Prodigal by FriendofCarlotta ( @friendofcarlotta) Rating: Explicit Word Count: 19.3k
Dean Winchester travels the wide-open country, looking for bounties to collect and doing odd jobs to make ends meet. Usually, he rides with his brother Sam, but they’ve had a falling-out and now Dean’s all by himself — until he meets Cas Novak, a preacher’s son in search of his missing father. Cas believes his notorious outlaw brother Luke knows something of their father’s disappearance, so he asks Dean’s help in tracking Luke down. Dean figures there’s no harm in helping out, and he might earn himself Luke Novak’s bounty into the bargain. All Dean needs to do is keep a lid on his growing feelings for Cas. (aka "Free to Be You and Me," rewritten as a Western)
Free to be You and Me is probably one of THEE Destiel episodes of all time. And what better way to pay homage to it than by also bringing in the greatest of Dean Winchester catnip: a western?!
This fic features Dean as the bounty hunter determined to go it alone ever since he and Sam split up, and Castiel as the preacher's son determined to find his kidnapped father. Castiel suspects his outlaw brother, Lucifer, of being responsible for his father's disappearance, and he hires Dean to help find both Lucifer and his father. Knowing the huge reward promised for Lucifer's capture, Dean agrees and becomes Castiel's uneasy ally. But you know they're not going to stay that way for long.
I'm always a sucker for western fics, especially when they parallel canon so very well. There are so many nods to the original episode, and Lucifer makes a compelling villain. There's also a lot of our favorite side characters packed into this fic, along with some delicious little historical tidbits. Sam and Dean's relationship is explored, and Dean and Cas are both the delightful, self-sacrificing idiots that we would expect them to be. A wonderful romp with our two favorite partners through the Wild West!

It somehow just dawned on me that video calls didn’t exist in the 1960’s and the that the transmissions they were showing in TOS would have been revolutionary, ‘cause whenever they have to videochat with admirals or whatever I’ve always just been like “Kirk ‘n the boyz on Zoom again”

SO HERE'S THE THING ABOUT TOMMY KINARD
He's a pilot. Pilots are fucking nerds. I know this because I grew up an air force brat.
Tommy will stop mid sentence and point upward and say shit like "That's an A330" and then continue talking like he didn't just derail the entire conversation to point out that a Delta flight took off.

Obsessed with the sudden shift in Cas' willingness to say insane romantic shit to dean in season 8. A couple of seasons ago, he would tell dean that they had a profound bond to his face. That everything he did, he did for Dean. Now? He's hesitating. He clenches his fists to avoid hugging Dean back in purgatory. He stutters and looks away before saying he stayed away from Dean to protect him. When asked what broke through heaven's brainwashing, he looks away and says he doesn't know. It's so interesting to me

tommy has never called evan "buck" once in his life, nor has he wanted to. but the first time he meets the buckley parents and takes note of their blatant disregard for evan's preferred name (a battle, he can tell, that evan has given up any hope of winning long ago), the name spills out of his mouth as naturally as anything. "hey, buck, baby, can you pass me the bread?" "buck, can i help you with anything in the kitchen?" the first time he says it, buck looks up, startled, and tommy can see the gears twirling in his brain—he can hear the instinctive did i do something wrong? question that pops up in his head, followed by him actually reading the situation, and ending with this softest look of love tommy has never in his life thought he deserved. he always says no when tommy asks, but both the intention, and understanding of that intention, are there. philip says, "so ev - i mean, buck," with a glance at tommy, "how's work been?" tommy doesn't know how to read that look. he doesn't know whether philip is deferring to him in acknowledgement to the fact that they're not too far in age, practically equals, or if he just doesn't want a strained relationship with his future son in law, but it doesn't really matter. evan's shoulders lose some of their tension and he leans a little bit further into tommy's touch because some battles were never meant for him to win. some battles have always just been waiting for tommy to fight them for him, in the same way tommy's own battles are lurking on the horizon ready for evan's steady hand and sure presence. it's one of the things he loves most about their relationship — their ability to read and respond to each other's needs, verbalized or not. he loves being loved by evan and he loves loving him and if that means going toe-to-toe with his shithead parents, then he'll do that every day of his life if only his boyfriend will keep leaning into him, trusting him like this.

okay it IS interesting that Dean is so caught in the grief of losing Cas, and Sam can’t understand that - but also Sam is so caught in the grief of losing Mary and Dean can’t understand that over the pain of losing Cas.
This show is just 15 years of Dean and Sam never understanding each other even one time.
