Summary

Celia Sand and her best friend, Anya Burtoni, are skilled inklings within the religion of Profeta. They use their abilities to tattoo followers with divine symbols supposedly guiding their actions. However, the girls realize the religion is built on lies over the course of the years. With the help of a trusted friend, Celia & Anya escape the religious institution anf join a traveling theater troupe. The solace is only temporary, for they become the target of the angry deity they once doubted. To protect the group from the wrath of this deity and her zealous followers, Celia and Anya must unveil the truth about Profeta itself.

Thoughts

OMG, this book was perfection for me! The author provides us with nonbinary character rep and a loveable group of traveling entertainers (gritty carny vibes), so of course it piqued my interest! Celia and Anya have the ideal friendship that most would kill to have. The ending had me clutching my invisible pearls. My favorite character is Diavalla because she is such a great villain. While her backstory is tragic and gains sympathy from readers, you still love to hate her (think Cersei Lannister). If you love to see people rebelling against a corrupt religious insitution, I highly recommend you give this book a go!

In this version of Alice in Wonderland, Cheshire the cat owns a brothel. Alice is obsessed with one of his employees, Caterpillar. She will stop at nothing to finally meet him in person, including making a deal with the evil cat. But will it be worth it?

Review

Hookah Smoking Caterpillar is a retelling of Alice in Wonderland. Despite the beautiful cover art and promising story, this book wasn't for me. Every chapter had a sex scene, but the actual plot barely existed. In other words, it felt as if I was reading a porn script.
