I’ve said it in several previous posts; nobody since the end of World War II has done more damage to Russia than Vladimir Putin. In that context, Putin is Russia’s greatest enemy.

Putin’s aim has been to destroy Ukraine as a national entity. That includes eradication of its culture. What has happened instead is that people in Ukraine in addition to other countries now want nothing to do with Russian culture.

“I was a Russian speaker until 24 February,” said Adeline, an art student from the now Russian-occupied town of Nova Kakhovka, referencing the date of Russia’s full-scale invasion earlier this year. Russia has failed to take over Ukrainian culture, she said, so now it has set out to kill it. Several other Ukrainian students told me they find “the spirit of freedom” in Ukrainian literature, but of subservience to power in Russian literature.

Tetiana, a refugee from the ruthlessly bombed and destroyed city of Mariupol, had suffered without heat, light or water in a cellar under constant bombardment, seen her best friend killed by a Russian missile, and then had a traumatic odyssey of escape. Tetiana not merely speaks much better Russian than Ukrainian; her mother is actually from Russia, as are her parents-in-law. The Russian president would consider her a Russian. So I asked her for her message to Putin. She replied that she would like to kill him.

Wherever I turned, in every conversation, there was a total rejection not just of the Russian dictator, not merely of the Russian Federation as a state, but of everything and almost everyone Russian. Polling by the Kyiv International Institute of Sociology shows that some 80% of Ukrainians had a positive attitude to Russia in 2013; by May 2022, the figure was just 2%. A university lecturer told me that his students now write “russia” with a small initial letter. “I don’t correct them.”

Some pre-war stats suggest that roughly 22% of Ukrainians spoke Russian as a first language. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy himself grew up speaking Russian. Now there is an abject hatred of all things Russian in Ukraine.

While this attitude might be expected in a country where Russia is committing acts of genocide, it is not limited to Ukraine.

In Georgia, a strong resentment of neoimperial Russia is more than understandable, since Russia has occupied roughly – a fifth of the country’s sovereign territory (in Abkhazia and South Ossetia) since 2008. But following the invasion of Ukraine, that hostility has enveloped almost all Russians. Ironically enough, this impacts the many tens of thousands of Russians who have fled to Georgia precisely to avoid being conscripted into fighting in Putin’s war against Ukraine. Georgians ask: why don’t you protest back home? Or as one banner put it, “Putin is killing people in Ukraine while Russians eat khachapuri in Georgia.” (Khachapuri is the distinctive Georgian cheese bread.)

Actually, khachapuri is best described as a Georgian equivalent of pizza. But you get the idea.

There is also high profile resentment of Russia in Kazakhstan.

On YouTube, you can watch a magnificent excoriation of the bullying Russian ambassador to Kazakhstan, Alexey Borodavkin, delivered in fluent Russian by the Kazakh journalist Arman Shuraev. “Russophobia is all that you have achieved with your stupid actions,” he says. If Russia invades Kazakhstan as it has Ukraine, “the entire Kazakh steppe will be strewn with the corpses of your conscripts … You are idiots. You are cannibals who eat themselves.”

“Borodavkin,” he concludes, directly addressing the ambassador, “if you want to see Nazis and fascists in Kazakhstan, look in the mirror and you will see the main Nazi and fascist. Glory to Ukraine! Forward Kazakhstan!”

The cultural concept of “russkiy mir” (”the Russian world”) began in a somewhat benign way after the collapse of the Soviet Union. But Putin hijacked it and has used it as an imperialistic justification for his military adventures.

The notion of russkiy mir was revived and repackaged in the late 1990s as a kind of Russian soft-power initiative (mir means peace as well as world). In 2007, a Russkiy Mir Foundation was created by presidential decree. This was presented as a Russian counterpart to the British Council or Germany’s Goethe-Institut, but the concept was then weaponised by Putin to justify his war of recolonisation in Ukraine. He explicitly mentioned the term in a speech justifying the annexation of Crimea in 2014.

The entirely predictable result: revulsion against his recolonisation wars has extended to the whole broader notion of a Russian-speaking world.

Outside of Russia, russkiy mir/the Russian world is usually used in a derogatory way. You may read or hear this expression in the media when Ukrainians or others talk about Putin’s territorial ambitions.

Instead of killing Ukrainian culture, Putin’s invasion is inflicting serious damage on Russia’s international cultural standing.

Russian culture is thus a collateral victim of Putin’s self-devouring cannibalism. There was an alternative future in which Russian-speaking culture, like today’s English-speaking culture, may have become multiculturally enriched by authors and artists from all its former colonies. What would contemporary English-language literature be without authors from India, Africa and Oceania? And, after all, fine contemporary Ukrainian writers such as Andrey Kurkov write – or should I say wrote? – in Russian.

In the end, Vladimir Putin will go down in history not merely as the man who failed to restore the Russian empire, but as the destroyer of the Russian world.

Indeed. No matter what happens, history will regard Putin as a loser. Future generations in Russia will despise him the way modern Germans hate Hitler. Those who try to overthrow Putin would be regarded as true heroes in Russia’s future.

Когда я читаю комиксы про МИРа я не могу перестать думать про это видео:

Если коротко, то в нём говорится про тренд (если его так можно назвать) переписывать супермена и делать его злым (ака "что если бы супермен убивал?") и как во многих случаях это делают писатели, которые не до конца понимают кто такой супермен и что делает его таким какой он есть и из-за этого просто считают его скучным. В итоге получается карикатура на супермена, которая якобы делает его более интересным, но как правило не то чтобы поднимает какие-то вопросы. Например, сериал "The Boys".

Главная мысль этого подкаста, как я ее поняла это то, что супермен - не скучный персонаж, то что он помогает, просто потому что он эмпатичный, не может пройти мимо, но зато может помочь. По сути то, как он показан в новом мультсериале "My adventures with superman" (по крайней мере в тех сериях, которые уже вышли).

Так вот. МИР очень напоминает мне эту версию супермена) Ну просто посмотрите на него!!

Я не сомневаюсь, что когда придумывали МИРа вдохновлялись суперменом. Ведь правда невооружённым глазом видно, что они похожи. Но то, что меня очень радует, это то, что его создатели решили сделать его именно таким милым и всегда готовым помочь, против убийства даже самых ужасных людей, как показано в последнем на данный момент (18) номере МИРа. Я очень надеюсь что он таким и останется и история не пойдет в русло типа "а что если бы супермен убивал".

Также наверное стоит отметить, что я понимаю, что во многом его стандарты/устои/воспитание в этих комиксах - это именно влияние СССР с дружбой народов, коммунизмом и т д. По моему, это все равно не отменяет очевидные параллели с суперменом.

А ещё я очень сомневаюсь, что кто либо правда дочитает до конца моего мысленного потока, но вылить его куда-то мне надо было:)

Les vœux, dit-on, peuvent être formulés jusque fin janvier, ce qui est peut-être ''pousser le bouchon un peu loin''. Cependant, avant de parler d'autres choses --et Dieu seul sait combien il y en a, des choses à dire, hélas plus souvent tristes que rigolotes--, je vous propose de nous arrêter quelques instants sur la partie ''vœux et souhaits en tout genre'' pour le millésime nouveau : pour une fois qu'un truc est gratuit, profitons-en avant que les harpagons psychopathes de Bercy ne taxent ça, comme tout le reste ! Et après mon coup de colère d'hier, un peu de légèreté ne peut pas faire de mal.

Tenu compte de l'état réel de la Planète ''Terre'' tel que nous le contemplons tristement, la première –et presque la seule-- chose qui vient à l'esprit entre les divers ''souhaits possibles'' est de formuler des vœux en faveur de la Paix, d'autant plus que ''elle le vaut bien'', et qu'elle fait un retour en force dans l'air du temps et dans le temps qu'il fait : paix par ci, paix par là, paix partout... tout le monde la décline, à défaut de la mettre en œuvre, et on a presque envie de s'écrier ''la paix, à la fin...'' ! C'est beau, je trouve, cette unanimité, c'est grand, c'est émouvant... Sauf que...

Sauf que la paix, ces derniers temps, elle est... comment dire ?... pas simple ! Disons qu'on est tous pour la paix (sauf les ''islamistes pathologiques'' –ces 2 mots synonymes désignant leur seule et même folie furieuse), mais qu'on ne sait pas trop comment s'y prendre. C'est pas de notre faute à nous (d'ailleurs, c'est plutôt de celle des autres), mais on n'y arrive pas. Et même... on ne sait plus comment s'y prendre pour en parler, y penser, l'appeler de nos vœux. Alors, la faire, a- fortiori... vous imaginez ! Ah ! La paix... d'accord, bien sûr, et comment ! Pourquoi ? Pas vous ? Bon, on est d'accord. Mais... comme tout est si compliqué, on en reparle demain, par exemple, ou après-demain si vous êtes déjà pris, demain... D'ailleurs, je ne me souviens plus si c'est à Gaza ou en Ukraine que les idiots-au-pouvoir exigent ''2 pays''... ce qui n'a pas la moindre chance de marcher, une fois le papier signé ! Qu'ils arrêtent, avec cette idée irréaliste, et... qu'ils nous fichent la paix !

Parce que, tout de même, la paix, c'est sûr, qu'on la veut. Bien sûr... pas à n'importe quel prix ! Le mieux, ce serait que ce soit les autres qui commencent, fassent les premiers pas et amorcent le processus : après tout, si l'état de paix a cessé, c'est de leur faute. Nous, on n'a fait que subir les conséquences de leurs errements, de leurs torts et de leurs fautes (Exemple : en Ukraine, c'est typique !). Et c'est là que surgit le première difficulté : les autres, ils disent exactement la même chose ! Il disent qu'ils sont à fond pour la paix, patin, couffin... mais ils veulent que ce soit les autres qui commencent, qui donnent l'exemple. Et c'est là que tout se gâche : leurs ''autres'' à eux, c'est nous !

Ces ''autres'' refusent d'admettre que chez nous –qui sommes tellement pour la paix--, c'est plus difficile, et que c'est plus compliqué, et tout, compte tenu de la situation. Et puis... il y en a qui aiment le conflit, la ''chikaya'', voire la bagarre... Vous savez... dans le genre ''l'Homme est un loup pour l'homme'' et tout ça, quoi... Mais attention ! Nous, on est pour la paix, hein ! Ne nous faites pas dire ce que nous ne pensons pas ! La preuve ? Rien qu'à l'idée qu'il pourrait y avoir la paix, on applaudit des deux mains (NDLR : phrase stupide s'il en est : qui applaudirait d'une seule main ?). Ce qui complique tout, c'est qu'elle change tout le temps de nom, celle-là ! Salam... Shalom... ou bienسلام et שָׁלוֹם... Peace... Paix... Paz... Pace... Frieden... 和平ou Heupíng, voire Mir ou Мир.. Comment voulez-vous qu'on ''fasse'' un truc qui ne fait rien pour nous faciliter le boulot ?

Pourtant, tous les ans, on est heureux que le Pape parle de la paix et la fasse applaudir ''urbi et orbi'' : il ne manquerait plus qu'il se mette à déconner ''façon Biden'' et raconte, du haut de son balcon, qu'il serait pour la guerre ! Qu'il divise les chrétiens et les monte les uns contre les autres, progressistes contre classiques, modernistes contre conservateurs, innovateurs contre dépositaires voire même, à la limite, a-sexués contre sexués et homos contre bi-... est une chose, mais qu'il l'érige en principe en serait une autre ! (NDLR – à propos de Jo Biden, je viens de découvrir qu'il dort 44 % de son temps ! Je pense donc avoir les qualités requises pour être Président des Etats-Unis : à 44 % du temps à siester, je suis dans la ''job description'' Mais je m'égare, comme le roi éponyme (Mégare) qui a perdu son cheveu d'or --Moi, de tous ceux que j'ai perdus, aucun n'était en or !).

En fait, la situation paraît assez simple, en fin de compte : plus on est pour la paix et plus d'autres sont aussi pour la paix, et plus la guerre continue, plus la haine continue, plus l'intolérance continue, et plus continuent le racisme, la violence, l'anti-sémitisme des cons, l'anti-homme blanc des wokistes et de ceux qui n'ont rien compris (ce sont les mêmes que ceux cités juste avant !), l'anti-catholicisme des mêmes et l'anti-christianisme des musulmans ''-issimes''... Peut être, en fin de compte, qu'on s'est simplement trompé de chemin, et qu'il suffirait de réclamer ''plus de guerre'' (au sens de ''davantage'') pour avoir, par esprit de contradiction, enfin la paix ?

Je n'ai pas la réponse, vous vous en doutez. Mais en attendant, la pauvre colombe blanche de la Paix (avec une majuscule, pour une fois), reçoit des volées de plomb. Qui a tiré ? Mais ''les autres'', voyons ! La preuve ? Nous, on est pour la paix... au point de provoquer sans cesse l'équilibre très relatif que lui confie notre trouille du nucléaire... ou au point d'offrir tous nos stocks stratégiques d'armes à un gugusse qui montre tous les signes d'un déséquilibre psychique majeur (et au moment précis où les menaces se multiplient, comme par hasard)... sans savoir si, sur le long terme, tout ce Saint Frusquin ne va pas se transformer en piège qui se refermera sur... nous...

La période actuelle risque à tout instant de devenir très intéressante à observer pour les masochistes, les imprévoyants et ''va-t'en-guerre'' (NB : avez-vous remarqué que l'antonyme de ce mot affreux, les ''va-t'en-paix'', n'existe pas, ni de paix ni de loin ? Et qui s'inquiète de cette ''case en moins'' dans notre dispositif ? Mais personne, vous le savez (et pour une fois, certainement pas ''les autres''!). Regardons la situation telle qu'elle est : quatre ou cinq ''zones de conflit'' immenses, incertaines, menaçantes : Formose, l'Ukraine, Gaza, et le détroit de Bab el-Mandeb, plus quelques autres zones, en train de ''se chauffer'' : l'ex-Yougoslavie et les kossovars, les ex-''Balkans'' et les azéris, l'ex AOF / AEF est ses colonels wagnérophiles, Erdoğan le fou-furieux, les deux Corées –ce mot désigne le conflit sino-américain sur le leadership militaire du monde--... et d'autres, dont les protagonistes, tout à leurs petites préparations, ne savent même pas vers quelles catastrophes ils se dirigent... avec nous, qui sommes pour la paix, mais serons entraînés avec ''eux z'autres''...

Car il n'y a pas un seul endroit, pas un seul moment, et pas une seule seconde où des gens sages et intelligents (une espèce en voie de disparition) brillent par des interventions ''dans le bon sens'' ! Ce qu'on trouve partout, c'est plein de gugusses incultes et nuls, et des cuistres ployant sous le poids de diplômes qui ne valent plus rien. Mais on cherche en vain des vieux sages cultivés, se souvenant de l'Histoire telle qu'elle s'est vraiment déroulée (ce qui n'a rien, mais RIEN à voir avec les récits officiels macroniens, bien entendu !) et de toutes les terribles leçons qu'elle distribue, des sages qui poseraient la question : ''Et après ?'' (et... seraient écoutés !).

On ferraille partout, au jour le jour, on fait n'importe quoi n'importe comment n'importe quand... en clamant –aurait déploré De Gaulle-- ''la paix, la paix, la paix... en sautant comme des cabris''... Mais la triste réalité est : ''Cherche grands Hommes, désespérément'' … et ce n'est pas après la dernière conférence de presse de ''qui nous savons'' qu'on va pouvoir se dire : ''Ah ! Ça n'est plus la peine de chercher : on en a trouvé un''. Où une telle absence de direction va-t-elle nous mener ? Sans doute là où personne de sain d'esprit ne voudrait aller... et vers quoi, pourtant, nous sommes en route : quelle paix en Ukraine ou à Gaza ? Si on emploie le mot ''paix'', c'est par antiphrase ! Pourtant... pour les 12 prochains mois, ''Que la Paix soit avec vous'' !

Foucault in 1974 described Goncharov’s post-Soviet speculations as reflecting “a blow striking down the illusory walls between capital-as-self, capital-as-the state, and capital-as-violence.” Were he alive today, I imagine he’d look upon the fall of the Soviet Union, and the rise of Russia’s criminal oligarchy, and see Goncharov as a kind of prediction. What do you think is the cultural significance of Goncharov today in the face of ongoing hostilities in Ukraine, and the rising nationalist idea of “Russky Mir?”

My first reaction to "Russian Mir", was similar to that of "The Red Priest", a character in TNC: "why would you write the Russian word Mir when you could write'mirage'? it would make it seem much better, in an English-language text from 1995." This is a kind of argument which I think you can't really use very often. There's no way to be sure how your readers will parse this, so it's best to use words that make sense to you -- even if it's awkward! Of course, "the mirage" wouldn't be a very good English translation, even in a text from 1995, but that's only a minor objection: the original Russian is also awkward. This kind of question is always something of a balancing act, though, and the best answer here is:

What the hell is a mirage? And when and how does it work?

As a response to your question, I would add that "the Red Priest" is not only not a good translation, it's not even (in my opinion) a good English sentence. But to answer your question:

The thing we all know about the world is that it's a mirage. Or to put it in scientific terms -- something is not what it looks like. We know this about our perceptions of our environments, our bodies, our fellow humans, our selves. The world is a giant illusion, and what's more, the parts of the world that don't seem obviously false are often false in ways we couldn't even have predicted.

This isn't just an interesting thing to think about, it's a good thing to think about! The more we understand about the mechanisms of human perception, the easier it is to think better about the world: instead of having blind spots, we get to be aware of them; instead of assuming things just because we've seen them a lot, we can think better about the possible interpretations of what we've seen.

June was announced as the month of “МИР”/”MIR”!

So most of you may not know what this comic is. Basically, it’s a nice touch on the stereotypes created by both sides of the conflict to use against each other.

In detail:

Every age and every regime give rise to their own heroes and their own monsters. Their perpetual confrontations are what makes up the core of human culture. Our battles are fought for us, by imaginary monsters, living legends, and myths, portraying fears and desires of common folk. Most people don't know what battle really decided the outcome of the Cold War. American and Soviet superheroes clashed in a fight to the death, and it ended up with one of them dying and another one going missing shortly after. For the longest time, their story was forgotten... The time went on, systems were falling, generations replaced one another, ideals were changing. And so, a daughter of an influential politician starts a risky gamble, determined to give the new era a hero from the past, whom people of the present need to stand united. Because the beast that scares some can very well become a symbol of hope and freedom for others... Side note: I discussed this earlier but I love how once again Bubble touch the costume aspect of being a superhero. How MIR wears it but only because rich people who woke him up made him do that, how the first costume they gave him is actually what stops him from being a hero and makes the situation dangerous!

Hey, hello, I’ve decided to finally create a post to explain who I am.

I am TJA, a part-time writer and conlanger, I write fanfics on Ao3, mainly Mha or Fnaf

I currently have 24 conlangs, a conlang, or constructed language, is a language made by a single person, or a group of people, for one of a few reasons, though mine is mostly fun.

My conlangs in the standard order are:

Seissiric: a germanic language using the cyrillic script, with å and ø. (Ss)

Iaponic: sort of Japanese, though with less kanji. (Ia)

Saori: a germanic-ish language, using its very own script, based on Artifexian’s ‘OA’. (Sa)

Sierien: a germanic language. (Sr)

Sachrai: a mostly germanic language, though with a complicated version of the latin script with way too many diacritics. (Sc)

Mnavokh: a slavic language based on Russian, it has no spaces. (Mn)

Ytr/Jtr: a slavic language, though more similar to Slovenian and the likes. (Yt)

Zhuzhian: a germanic? language with its own script, this one is typeable, thankfully. (Lj)

Helaja’ika: an elvish language, used to have its own script, but it was untypeable, so I dropped it. (HL)

Pegas’ika: basically Helaja’ika, but with the Greek alphabet, and some minor differences. (Pi)

Thaos: based on Fr*nch, don’t know whether I’ve made it easier or not. (Ta)

Thaelich: based on Dutch, which is my native language, though it uses some old-english characters, such as þ ð and æ. (Th)

Rukou’ant: a slavic language with very few characters. (Rk)

Rakhchi: a slavic language based on Russian, thankfully has spaces tho. (Rh)

Lazerna: a germanic language with a script which is a mix between the latin and cyrillic scripts (why did I pick the latin r and slavic г). (Lz)

Ğajaţi: a romance language based loosely on Romanian and Fr*nch. (Gj)

Witase: this is a language which is quite unique imo, but its sentences can be somewhat long. (Wt)

Neùre Tho: a germanic language with a few more diacritics, though it has some small influences from Dutch and Fr*nch. (Nt)

Arhwnith: a weird language with a ton of diacritics and other weird characters, mostly based on slavic. (Ah)

Kije: a language for which I limited my vowels to e i and u, but gave each of them four different lengths. (Kq)

Krawzhish: a polish based language. (Kr)

Dó-chiāu-lièng: a language based loosely on Vietnamese, with it being just the inspiration for it. (Dc)

Syric: a germanic language, simultaneously easier and more complicated than Sierien and Seissiric. (Sy)

Arkhaic: a language with quite some diacritics, though a tad simpler than others, :3. (Ak)

Here’s a sentence in each of my languages, just to show the chaos beauty of them
