National Heat Awareness Day
National Heat Awareness Day is observed annually on the last Friday of May, which falls on May 26 this year. National Heat Awareness Day is an effort by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) and the National Weather Service to alert workers, employers, and the public at large about the (preventable) health dangers related to heat, in order to reduce the overall rate of illnesses and deaths caused by it. This day was specially founded as a reminder that many outdoor workers or laborers are at risk of serious heat-induced conditions like heat exhaustion, dehydration, heatstroke, and even death. We bring you tips on how spreading awareness about these conditions and their prevention can help mitigate such unnecessary medical emergencies.
History of National Heat Awareness Day
National Heat Awareness Day was founded by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration and the National Weather Service, an agency of the U.S. Federal Government. While there is no record of its first observance, the importance of this day and what it stands for is why we are including it.
The reality is that every year, in the U.S. alone, people suffer and die from heat-induced illnesses, which could easily have been prevented with the right protective measures and intervention. Groups that are especially vulnerable to heat are outdoor workers (like farmers and manual laborers), young children, elderly adults, people with chronic medical conditions, and pregnant women. Heatwaves have been on the rise over the past few decades, with a definite correlation to climate change and the crisis of global warming. In the U.S. itself, recent history shows the shocking death toll due to heatwaves. While various measures are being taken to adapt to rising temperatures and humidity, there is a need for awareness to be spread in order to mitigate the losses.
Therefore, this day was created in order to spread awareness to overcome the high-temperature-related issues. This day is also observed to encourage the consumption of water to avoid heat-related illness. Americans seem to still underestimate the health risks related to conditions of extreme heat or temperatures, even though it’s the deadliest weather condition in the country. With factors like pollution causing temperatures to rise earlier each year, the onslaught of the heat of summer is coming faster every year. For this reason, it is imperative that the nation at large begins to sit up and take notice of the fact that there are many groups in need of protection from an unexpected killer.
National Heat Awareness Day timeline
1600s The Term ‘Heatwave’ is Born
The term heatwave originates in America.
198o Heatwaves Turn Deadly
A heatwave kills 1,250 in the U.S.
1995 Chicago’s Killer Heatwave
A heatwave in Chicago kills 700 people.
2003 Worst Heatwave in Europe
A heatwave across Europe becomes responsible for over 50,000 deaths.
National Heat Awareness Day FAQs
What are three signs of heatstroke?
Symptoms of both heat exhaustion and heat stroke include fatigue/weakness, headaches, and confusion or dizziness. However, in the case of heat exhaustion, your heartbeat slows down, muscles can cramp and there is excessive sweating accompanied by intense thirst. In the case of heatstroke, your heartbeat quickens, you can experience shortness of breath and your skin feels hot, with decreased sweating and urination. In both cases, the person affected should be moved to a cool, shaded location, given sips of water to drink and their skin needs to be cooled with water or ice (until medical help arrives).
Why is heatwave dangerous?
“Heatwaves can kill via the dehydration caused by heavy sweating; the altered sodium and potassium concentrations in the blood confuse both heart and nerve cells, and so breathing or heartbeat may suddenly stop,” according to DownToEarth.
What is the highest heatwave ever recorded?
The National Weather Service recorded a temperature of 130℉ in Death Valley National Park, California, in 2020. This could be the highest temperature ever reliably recorded on earth!
How to Observe National Heat Awareness Day
Chug, chug, chug that H2O
Commit to protecting the vulnerable
Get the word out
Dehydration is one of the most preventable things, which, if left ignored, can lead to more serious health issues. Therefore it is recommended by experts everywhere that eight glasses of water a day is a good standard to maintain. Not only does your body stay hydrated, but water also helps flush toxins out of the body.
There are many online campaigns and grassroots petitions being signed to support the need for outdoor workers to have adequate laws to protect them from heat and other work- environment-related health hazards. Read up and get involved, because every voice does matter!
With powerful tools like social media at our disposal, we can rally our communities (both virtual and real) to spread awareness about the very real risks of heat-related medical conditions that could affect anyone at any time. Train yourself and someone you know to recognize the signs and take action — a little bit can go a long way.
5 Tips On Beating The Heat This Summer
Stay hydrated
Keep your fashion light and breezy
Slather on sunscreen
Avoid going outdoors in peak times
Limit your activity
The manifold benefits of drinking enough water and fluids cannot be stressed enough.
Wear loose-fitting and lightweight clothing, made with breathable fabrics like cotton.
The importance of sunscreen as protection against the sun is never going to get old.
Avoid stepping out into the sun during its peak hours, especially without protection.
Leave the intense workouts for early mornings or nights, and take it easy during the midday heat.
Why National Heat Awareness Day Is Important
Lobbies to protect the vulnerable
It educates us on prevention methods
It resonates with people everywhere
Several years ago, OSHA began a Heat Illness Prevention Campaign to spread awareness about the dangers of working in conditions of extreme heat. Their petition for change could be boiled down to three simple demands for workers — shade, rest, and water. The onus falls on employers to ensure that their workers are receiving these basic requirements and are being protected from extreme heat and other hazardous conditions.
By reinforcing such basic preventative measures, National Heat Awareness Day brings the reality of things we take for granted (like water) to the forefront and makes us more mindful of our own health.
Heatwaves and heat-related health issues are on the rise all over the world, thanks to climate change. Therefore the message of National Heat Awareness Day is relevant to people across the globe, especially as many nations do not even have access to resources like drinking water and electricity. It opens one’s eyes to the larger realities of social injustice and climate change.

Dreamflower Original Story MASTER POST
This post is a collection of facts and information about my original story universe, "Dreamflower", and the main storyline soon to be published on AO3, titled "May I Love You".
The post will be divided into sections under the cut, first section includes the basic synopsis and facts about the main characters and the environment. After each published chapter, any new characters introduced will get their own little section and a possible visual sketch of their character.
Dreamflower universe is very loosely based on my FNAF Animutant AU, but many things are made and flexed out to be so much different that this is a completely original story at this point, despite the main characters sharing some similarities with Sun and Moon from FNAF-
------------------------------------------------------
Synopsis of the story:
Humans have always been afraid of things they aren't familiar with. When a new type of subspecies of humans started to appear after the late 60's they were terrified. Theories of alien invasion or the devil's advocates taking over the earth slowly, members of this new species, Animutants, were denied regular human rights, and often forced to live outside major cities, or sometimes even killed as a form of funded euthanasia.  Solros Ellis is a young adult who, despite being a human, has never had an easy life. Growing up in extreme poverty, bullied until he dropped out of school, abused by his alcoholic father, Solros has only wished for freedom. One morning, Solros wakes up to a new reality: he has turned into an Animutant overnight!  Learning what could possibly happen to him if he stays in the city, Solros runs away from his old life and meets Luan Costello, a guy of his age who was born as an Animutant, denied basic human rights and lived his whole life feeling like a burden to those around him. With Luan's help and kindness, Solros is getting adjusted to his new life as an Animutant and healing those wounds his old life left on him.  Will the difficulties of being considered something less than a human bring Solros just another set of unfortunate events, or was his mutation written in the stars so he could meet with Luan?
-----------------------------------------------------
Plutonia:
The story takes place in a made-up country called Plutonia.
Plutonia is an island country. It has its own indepedence, but works as a constitutional monarchy under the English Crown, just like Canada.
On the world it's located underneath Newfoundland island, close to the North-East coast of the US.

Both Solros and Luan were born in Duskfort City. Solros lived there until his transformation. Luan's family lives up to the North in a small town called Bluebell.
You can read more facts about the country from here.

Chapter 1:
Summary:
Luan Costello is an 18-year-old young man, who will soon graduate from high school, just waiting for his life to start. Except he has never gone to a normal school, has no real friends and is haunted by the fact he feels like a burden to his loving family. There's nothing wrong in his life, other than the fact he was born as an Animutant and denied a lot of basic rights in human society. Yet, he feels like something is still missing. An opportunity, maybe love; something that would make his life have a proper meaning. But he rarely leaves his house, doesn't spend time with people of his age, reads books and writes poems all day long. Is he really expecting his destiny just to walk up to his house and knock on his door? Well, guess what...

Hammer Time
Warnings: scars, healing, wounds, hurt/aftermath, hurt/comfort, hurt/recovery
Whumpee set down the hammer and nail. They had thought they were feeling strong enough for this. But it was just too much. They sighed as they sat down on the bed and scratched the long scar across their belly. They had to be careful not to scratch too hard through their clothes as the scar, though mostly healed, was still prone to bleeding if Whumpee scratched too hard.
They were just too tired. Everything had been too much. Each day they thought they could do something. And each day they were reminded of how much had been taken from them.
“You ok, Whumpee? Did you hit yourself with the hammer?” Caretaker paused as they walked by the doorway.
Whumpee shook their head. “I’m fine.”
“You seemed very excited for ‘hammer time’, why the long face?” Caretaker leaned on the door jam.
“I....I...I can’t do it. Not yet.” Whumpee tried to not let the disappointment show on their face. Tried not to let the fatigue and exhaustion fill their words.
“Can I sit down?” Caretaker asked and waited until Whumpee nodded. “I know you’re feeling better, but your body needs more time.”
“It’s had a lot of time,” Whumpee said, knowing they were beginning to sound petulant.
“But, sounds like it needs more time. There’s nothing wrong with that. And,” Caretaker held up their hand, “I know you are bored. I know you’re tired of staring at empty walls.”
“I am,” Whumpee said softly.
Caretaker picked up the hammer. “Why don’t you tell me where you want things to go and I’ll be your arms and legs? It’ll be a fun project.”
“You’re busy though,” Whumpee frowned.
“I’m never too busy for you.” Caretaker stood up. “Where do you want me to start?”

Day 26 - Alt. Prompt: Body Modification
Depersonalization, amnesia, memory loss, implied torture, flaying, blood, medical procedures, no anesthesia, dubious medical accuracy, mentions of Christianity
[Directly follows Vows]
Yessir. No sir.
That was all it took to sign away his right to what fragmented memories he had left. The Wolf knew he should have cared about that, cared enough to be angry about that.
But he wasn’t - he was whatever they wanted him to be.
So long as he was out of that Hell, he would be whoever they wanted him to be. He would be no one, not even The Wolf, if that’s what it took to stay away from that place.
The sun was warmer than he remembered, brighter too.
This new room had a window, and that was all he wanted to remember.
He would swallow back the nausea induced by the scent of acid-eaten flesh when his prints were burned away. The bandages wrapped around his fingers were thin, letting blood dye the gauze pink as the overseer walked him to a different room in the building.
This one did not have a window.
He saw the surgeons set out medical equipment and he promised himself he would not flinch at the scalpel’s kiss. (Why waste anesthesia on someone who knew better than to shy away from the pain?)
When they finished cutting, he looked down at his own flayed, tattooed skin set aside while new skin was sewn into place.
He wondered if they had meant anything, the flowers and vines that once curled up his right forearm and encircled his bicep. He wondered if the old Wolf had gotten them from a friend or a stranger.
The new skin wasn’t his own, pale and cadaverous. He wondered if its former owner was dead, killed just for this purpose or a donor blissfully unaware that their flesh would be soaked in blood, forever tied to the hand of a monster. He wondered if there was any owner at all, or if the project had facilities that could synthesize the replacement flesh.
When they finished his arm, they had him strip his thin t-shirt, the material speckled with fresh blood as he thoughtlessly pulled it off without regard for his newly acquired stitches. One of the surgeons looked at him with wide, frightened eyes.
Like a young Viktor laying eyes on his creation when it first drew breath.
But still, they cut into the skin against his still too prominent ribs, carving away a cross below his left arm by his heart. The text inscribed within was too faded to read.
The bloody stretch of skin was added to the biohazard waste bin with all the ceremony of a discarded tissue. The surgeons set about aligning and stitching the cold patch of false flesh in its place. Blood ran in rivulets down the Wolf’s ribs, dying the waistband of his pants red.
His mind wouldn’t wander from the last glimpse of something his own, something raw and bloody that meant enough to who he had been to be engraved in ink on flesh.
(Hardly as permanent a mark as the one placed on Cain.)
Had he been deeply religious or culturally Christian? Did it have his real name hidden in the old, smudged ink? Did it matter anymore?
Hell was real. And the Wolf was hand carved from the violence and gore to be its very best devil.
[Before Liquidation]

National Road Trip Day
Hit the road, Jack! Road trips are the ultimate adventure filled with endless possibilities, unforgettable memories, and a load of snacks. So buckle up, roll down the windows, and let the wind take you where it may.
There’s nothing quite like celebrating the joy of being on the open road! Wheels on the highway, windows rolled down, map in hand and music blasting. Short or long, on your own or with a group, road trips provide the opportunity to get away and be free, even if just for a little weekend getaway.
National Road Trip Day brings awareness and attention to the fun and adventure of spending time on the road!
History of National Road Trip Day
Road trips have been around since the time that vehicles were able to be driven for distances. Though they have been made easier by convenient gas stations and smoothly paved interstate highways, road trips have been an enjoyment for over a century. In fact, the first record of a road trip happened in 1903 when Horatio Nelson Jackson took a road trip from San Francisco to New York. Of course, his traveling companions for the 63 day road trip were his mechanic and his dog!
When Route 66 opened up in the United States in the 1930s, and as the automobile industry grew over the next decades, road trips became more prevalent. With memories like packing a picnic, singing songs, playing the license plate game and riding backwards in the ‘way-back’ seat of the station wagon, road trips bring with them a certain type of nostalgia for many Americans.
How to Celebrate National Road Trip Day
Have fun and enjoy National Road Trip Day with some of these ideas for making the most of the day:
Take a Nostalgic Road Trip
Pack those snacks and get ready for some family fun! While today’s world offers all sorts of comfort and convenience, perhaps this road trip can be a special one with a blast from the past. Go retro by turning off smart phones, getting rid of headphones, and engaging in some fun activities with the group. Enjoy some road trip games, sing some silly songs, and even roll down the windows and stick your feet out for a few minutes!
Unfortunately, it’s impossible to roll back time enough to pay only $.60 per gallon to fill up the gas tank! But cars are certainly more fuel efficient than they used to be, so that should help balance things out a little.
Watch a Road Trip Movie
Those who don’t have the ability to head out on a road trip in honor of National Road Trip Day might want to observe the day by accessing road-trip-style entertainment. Check out some of these movies that pay honor to the mighty American road trip:
Vacation (1983). Chevy Chase heads up an all star cast in this classic road trip movie from National Lampoon.
We’re the Millers (2013). What can go wrong when a drug dealer recruits a fake family to make an illegal road trip to Mexico?
Little Miss Sunshine (2006). This drama comedy follows a family’s adventure across the country to enter their daughter into a beauty pageant.
