Chapter Four: Fish People
When I was twelve, Donna started to visit nearly every day. She even came alone most of the time. Donna sat in the round alcove bench that Fisher built, sharing books with me when things were slow. I’d tap on the glass when I was done with a page, and she’d smile and turn the page. Sometimes, when it was busy, Donna would follow me around the Aquarium, dancing and making silly faces. I loved that she lived in town then. We kept each other company. Until she found someone more exciting. Or at least that’s what I thought at the time.
Donna brought him one day without warning, holding his hand and laughing. He was beautiful, and I thought it was jealousy at first, but it was something much more potent than that. He pressed his face against the glass, and Donna tapped his arm to chastise him for making faces at me. I swam into my cave and crossed my arms. Donna tapped the glass. She learned Morse code for me. “What’s the matter?” Donna asked.
“Him,” I replied, “He’s mean.”
I poked my head out of the cave to watch her expression. She held up a finger to tell me to wait and then turned to the other boy and waved her finger at him. He said something in reply to plead his case, and she crossed her arms and pointed at me before reaching into her bag and giving him a notepad and pencil. His expression softened, and he gently brushed her to the side. The boy approached the tank with a sad look on his face. He tapped the tank. “I’m Roy. What’s your name?” he wrote.
I wrote, “Fishy.”
“I mean, your real name,” Roy wrote in reply.
“Don’t have one,” I replied. Roy’s face was indescribably unique. He had freckles much darker and more pronounced than Wally’s. Then Roy’s eyes were soft, large, and expressive. Then his nose… Aquiline and painted with dark freckles twitched at me. And his brows wrinkled his smooth forehead as they pushed toward each other.
“That’s cruel,” Roy replied. He said something aloud, and Donna shrugged and said something. Roy turned to her and gestured toward me. I wondered what he said to Donna because she looked as upset as Roy was. Roy kissed her cheek and left us alone.
Donna climbed the ladder and dropped an apple into the tank for me. I left my cave and caught it. I ate while she took her place on the alcove bench. We read a few pages from Antigone. I tapped on the glass, asking where Roy went. “He wanted to give us some space,” Donna tapped.
“His face is nice,” I replied.
Donna smiled, but I could see in her knitted brows she was confused. “Approval? Or a question?” Donna asked.
“I don’t know what you mean,” I answered. Donna’s smile quieted from a grin to a simper.
I floated upside down while she read to me. Donna was beautiful to me… And at my age, I’d just started to realize that. She read with me until I fell asleep in the tank. When I awakened, she was gone, and Fisher pulled me out of the tank. It would’ve startled me had I not been half-awake. “You’ve been asleep all afternoon. What’s wrong with you? If it wasn’t so slow, I’d send you back to bed without supper,” Fisher complained.
“Do people-? Were you ever married, Fisher?” I asked.
“I was engaged once. She died,” Fisher replied as he dried me off. I didn’t ask anything else. I’d never seen death before, but I’d heard of omens. That felt like one.
Everyone poured into the Aquarium for dinner, and Eunice sat beside me. She seemed tired. She kissed my cheek and pushed me to drink my milk as always, but I felt something wrong. I drank my milk and laid my head on her lap. “Eunice,” I whispered, “Will you stay with me tonight?” Eunice ran her fingers through my hair.
“Of course, Fishy… What’s the matter?” Eunice asked. I suddenly felt a wave of terror and nausea wash over me. It was so intense that I broke into a fever-like sweat.
“Something’s hurting me,” I whispered, “And I’m scared…” Eunice frowned. I never got sick unless my tank needed to be cleaned or I’d been out of the water too long.
“Fisher, I think he should sleep in the pool tonight,” Eunice whispered, “I’ll keep an eye on him… Besides, I wanted to talk to him privately.”
Fisher filled the pool with water, and Eunice set up her cot. “Your friend brought someone with her today,” Eunice noted, “How did that make you feel?”
“Is she in love?” I asked.
“I think so, sweetheart,” Eunice replied.
Eunice held my hand as she led me to the pool. “What does it feel like?” I asked. She smiled.
“You’ll know when you feel it… Because your heartbeat feels strange in your chest, and you can’t stop thinking about them… You’re still young, but one day you’ll fall in love-.” She stopped speaking. “Oh, Fishy, I’m sorry.” I frowned. As far as I knew, there were no other fish people like me. I hesitated, squeezing her hand in mine.
“I think-. Can I-? Can you be in love with human people?” I asked.
“I think so, but it usually doesn’t end well,” Eunice replied, “Can I ask why you have a sudden interest in romance?”
“Because I felt different when I saw her with that boy today… I think I’m-. I like them both-.”
“Oh, sweetheart. I-. Fishy, you should never tell Fisher that you feel that way about the boy. Promise me,” Eunice whispered as she held me by my shoulders.
“Why? Did I do something bad?” I asked.
“No… People might think differently of you if they knew… It’s not fair, but the world has a tendency toward closemindedness. You’re not bad at all, Fishy. I love you so much, my darling… But the world can be cruel,” Eunice warned me, “Don’t let it get to you. I want you to continue to be loving and kind like you are.” She took a cup and poured water over my gills. It felt good to have new warm saltwater in my gills. Then, she lay beside me in her cot and went to sleep. She never woke up. And that’s when it started for me. My curiosity about fish people… And the ocean.

Chapter Three: Gills
Some people didn’t believe I lived underwater, and in the fall came the skeptics. I hated October. The frightening masks and costumes of the kids, the older children, and the loud tapping noises against the glass... But some skeptics were different. My favorite was the strange boy. He was with a tall, dark, handsome man with a smile, but it seemed false. The man seemed much more frightening than he led on. The boy was brilliant! He walked on his hands and flipped down the aisles, and I followed him, wondering why he wouldn’t look at me. Finally, at the end of the aisle, he turned toward me and crossed his arms, saying something I couldn’t understand, but his words weren’t directed at me. The man laughed and messed up the boy’s hair. The boy advanced forward and looked at the corners of the tank and then at me. He tapped the glass and scowled before taking a notepad from his jacket pocket. He wrote a single question. “What’s the trick?” he asked.
I cooled the glass and wrote, “No tricks.” He frowned at me as he wrote something else, but his eyes never left me. I blew bubbles in the water to make him laugh, and when I noticed he and the man were the only ones watching, I froze some of the bubbles and juggled them.
“How long can you hold your breath?” he asked.
“I’m not,” I wrote in reply. I made rings in the water with my mouth and froze them, but the boy didn’t believe me. He stood on a bench, sticking his finger in the man’s face. I’d never seen a child talk to an adult like that before. The man sighed and pinched the bridge of his nose. He replied to the boy, but the boy poked his chest. Then they started arguing. The man didn’t seem that old when he argued with the little boy. I could tell the boy was in control of the situation, but I wondered why he was so upset. The man picked him up so they were at eye level, and he said something that made the boy relax. The man set him down, and they walked out of the Aquarium holding hands.
It was my birthday… Or at least I think it was my birthday. We always celebrated the day Fisher found me like a birthday. I think I was eight years old then. I always put on an extravagant show for my birthday. The crowds were usually small around that time because it was the beginning of March, but word grew that it was one of the best days to see me perform, and every year, there were a few more curious faces. By the end of the day, I’d nearly forgotten the brilliant boy with his hot temper and serious dress style.
I climbed out of the tank at the end of the day and dried off for dinner. Eunice came in first, and she showered me with birthday kisses. Eight kisses for eight years. “You’re getting so big. Do you know that? I’m gonna have to sew you some new swimming suits soon,” Eunice whispered as she picked me up, “Oh, you’re gonna get too big to pick up soon. My little guppy’s growing up so fast.” She dried my hair and wiped her lipstick off my face. “You have a very special guest coming to dinner tonight.”
“Who?” I peeped.
“It’s a surprise, sweetheart,” Eunice replied, “The cook made lasagna for you. He made it special… Just for you, Fish.” She let me sit on her lap while we waited for everyone else. Fisher came in and looked at me.
“How’s our Fish doin’?” Fisher questioned as he looked me over. He moved the towel off my shoulders and checked my gills. “Are you breathing okay?” I nodded. He sprayed my gills with salt water, and I smiled.
“Thank you,” I whispered. Fisher nodded.
“Did Eunice tell you that we’re expecting some special guests?” Fisher asked. I nodded. “Good… You look great.”
I heard Margie, the new Tattooed Lady’s voice, before I could see her. She entered the room with the dark-haired man and held the brilliant boy’s hand. I covered my head and body with the towel. I’d never been outside the tank in the presence of another child before. “No, Fishy, this is your special guest,” Fisher reassured me. Eunice rocked me until I calmed.
The little boy approached me, and I glanced up, catching his eyes directly in the dim light of the Aquarium. “Dick Grayson,” he introduced himself, sticking his hand out. I grabbed it and held it in mine. He had a high voice like mine.
“Don’t be too hard on him, Dick. He’s never seen another kid this close before. Fishy’s shy, but he’s a real sweetheart,” Margie stated. Eunice pulled the towel off my head, and I had a completely unobstructed view of Dick Grayson. He was serious-looking, and it frightened me, but his hand was warm and soft but firm. I squeezed it and didn’t pull away. He let me hold his hand for as long as I wanted.
“He’s committed to the bit. I’ll give him that. You guys even gave him gills,” Dick smiled as he touched the gills on the right side of my neck. They fluttered at his touch. His eyes widened, and his smile spread into a goofy grin that made him look more my age. “You’re a real Fish Boy… Wow. I-. Nice to meet you, Fishy.”
“Nice to meet you, Dick Grayson,” I replied, “It’s my birthday today.”
“Happy birthday, Fishy. Hey, you can talk! So you can breathe air, too?” Dick asked. I nodded. “Where do you sleep?”
I pointed to the cave in the tank. “I can’t breathe air for a long time because I get sick when I’m dry too long,” I explained, “Are you still mad at your man?”
Dick laughed and looked up at the man. “My man? He’s my foster father, Bruce Wayne,” Dick explained.
Bruce approached me and crouched where we were face-to-face. “Hello, Fishy. How old are you today?” Bruce questioned.
“Eight… Or maybe seven, but I think-. Eight,” I whispered. Bruce smiled.
Howard came in with balloons, and Fisher started the song. The others piled in, and Chef made everyone’s plates. He always hid the cake until the last second. I couldn’t wait to see the ocean again. He always decorated the cake like the ocean. It was the only way I ever got to see it. Dick sat next to me and ate lasagna for dinner with us. Bruce talked to the other adults. “Hey, my friend, Donna wanted me to give you something for your birthday,” Dick whispered, “She said you’d know what it meant.” Dick gave me a box from the bag on his shoulder.
It was wrapped in shiny paper. “Who is Donna? How do I thank her?” I asked.
“She says she visits you every summer with her sister-. Wait, you might know her as the apple girl from the magazine,” Dick explained. My eyes widened. Donna. “She likes you a whole lot. Donna talks about you every summer. So does Wally.”
“I know who Wally is! He has freckles! He always brings me a present!” I exclaimed. It was the loudest I’d ever spoken, and it startled me. I covered my mouth. Dick laughed.
“Sounds like you like Wally a whole lot,” Dick smiled. I nodded.
“We talk every summer. How do you know all my friends?” I asked.
“They’re my friends too. My foster father knows Donna’s sister Diana and Wally’s Uncle Barry,” Dick explained, “Oh! And Wally sent you something, too. Wally wrote you a letter, and he wanted to tell me your present came from the beach.” Dick gave me a second gift box.
“Wow! Do you-? Could I open them now?” I asked.
“Depends on what your dad says,” Dick replied.
“Oh, Fisher’s not my dad. I don’t have any parents,” I explained. Dick frowned. “Fisher? Could I open my gifts now?”
“Not until after the cake,” Fisher replied. I nodded and finished eating dinner while I waited for everyone else. Eunice gave me my cup and had me drink my milk.
Chef came out with the cake, and I wished to see the ocean before blowing out the candles. The cake was spectacular! It had candy seashells that Chef made all by himself. I opened my gifts. Wally gave me sea glass for my tank. They were blue and green and smooth to the touch. And Donna gave me a snow globe with an apple tree, and it played music. I turned it upside down, and it had the song’s title on the bottom. “Oh! Edelweiss!” Eunice exclaimed. “What a sweet gift!” I smiled. It was one of the most special birthday gifts I ever had.

DBH RARE PAIRS WEEK DAY 1: Secrets + Sacrifice
RK800 - 60 x RK900 - 87
Nines sits, eyebrows furrowed at his partner. Sixty blankly stares at his open palms, eyes distant.
His boyfriend has been acting odd lately, more-so than usual. When Nines would come home from the DPD, he'd always find Sixty sitting, a frown on his face with the barest hint of pain.
He had asked Sixty about it, wondering if the repairs at New Jericho needed any touch ups. But he'd only get a smirk and words of reassurance in response.
And the most pecuiliar part?
Every time he'd attempt to establish a connection with his partner it would be blocked.
But.
Sixty would just roll his eyes, and comment, "Well, my wiring's fucked. What can you do?"

(warning for drug use)
1962
“You need to get back to New York.”
Lenny snorts as he settles back in his desk chair. “What for?” he asks. “It’s not like you can have me on the show, Gordon.”
Gordon sighs heavily. “Look, I- I don’t know how to...Midge hasn’t been feeling like herself.”
He sits up quickly, gripping the phone. He hasn’t been watching the show lately. He just doesn’t want to be reminded of what he’d left behind. It was better to have a clean break after not being able to gig in New York again and Midge is better off without him anyways. “What does that mean, ‘not like herself’?”
“It means...she was feeling depressed,” Gordon says awkwardly. “And her friend Imogene suggested she go see someone about it...”
Lenny squeezes his eyes shut. “Let me guess: A doctor someone with a prescription pad.”
“Good guess,” Gordon says. “She’s not eating much, as far as I know. Probably not sleeping, either. Everyone else thinks she’s fine, but I’m worried she’s been taking more than she should, and if anyone can sniff out a Midge problem, it’s you.”
“I shouldn’t,” Lenny tells him. “We ended things because I fucked it all up, she doesn’t want to see me.”
“I am begging you,” Gordon tells him. “Put your shit aside for a few days. I don’t wanna lose my house comic, and I really don’t wanna lose my friend.”
Lenny sighs heavily. “I’ll catch the next flight out. But you’re paying for my hotel room.”
“Fuck you, you know you’re gonna be staying with Midge.”
“I’ll see you as soon as I can.”
****
His first stop is Midge’s, and when he knocks on the door, there’s no answer. So it’s a good thing he still has the key to the utility entrance in the kitchen.
When he steps in, the apartment is mostly dark (odd for Midge and her parents), and there’s an eeriness to the place being so quiet.
“Midge?” he calls. “You home?”
Her voice is quiet, coming from the bathroom.
“Lenny?”
He heads that way, and he finds
Well.
Midge is sitting up against the bathtub, looking dazed, wearing her nightgown, her hair curly around her pretty but too-thin face.
And there’s a pill bottle on the sink.
Lenny snatches it up, reading it quickly. “Dexamyl. Fuck, Midge, if you wanted a drug problem, I could have given you better pointers.”
She shakes her head, trying to focus on him. “The doctor said to take two when I need them, but I...I got a little confused and I think I already took them, and then I took two more...”
“So you’ve literally been knocked on your ass,” Lenny says. “Midge, you went through this with me. Why would you-”
“I was sad,” she blurts out, squeezing her eyes shut. “I went to this doctor Imogene recommended, and-”
“He gave you a barbiturate and amphetamine mix to make you feel happy,” Lenny finishes for her.
“He said they would help,” Midge tells him. “That...that lots of women take these to help them.”
“Where are your parents?”
“Paris. Kids are with Joel this week.”
Lenny sighs softly and sits next to her, wrapping an arm around her, letting her cuddle in against him. “I’m sorry, Sweetheart, I’m here.”
“You’ll leave again,” she slurs out. “Everyone leaves. Joel. Shy’s plane. You.”
He sighs softly and holds her tighter.
*****
Eventually, he gets Midge settled in bed with some water, and she falls into a hard sleep. He sighs heavily and tidies up a little before dumping the pills into the toilet and flushing.
This wasn’t supposed to happen to Midge. Him, sure. He’s fallen off the wagon plenty in the last couple of years, though he’s two months clean now by some fucking miracle. But Midge isn’t supposed to be the one to fall for this crap.
“Dexamyl,” he says over the phone to Gordon a little while later as he puts together some soup in the kitchen. “She’s high as a fucking kite, and she doesn’t remember how the hell many she takes so she just takes more.”
“Whelp. She’s officially on paid leave from the show.”
“Yeah,” Lenny sighs.
“You wanna fill in for her?”
“Is that legal?”
“Who gives a fuck?”
*****
When he heads back to the bedroom, Midge is up and looking a little more with it, sitting with her chin on her knees, shame on her face.
“I made soup,” he offers. “You must be hungry.”
She shrugs.
“I know the pills make you lose your appetite,” he says gently. “But you have to eat something, Midge.”
He still doesn’t get an answer, and Lenny sighs as he walks over, sitting on the edge of the bed. “I talked to Gordon. He’s put you on paid leave for the next few weeks so you have some time to recover.”
“Fine,” she says quietly.
“He’s the one who asked me to fly in, by the way,” Lenny explains. “He was worried about you.”
Midge nods slowly. “I’m sorry, Lenny. This is probably the last thing you needed.”
“This isn’t about me.”
“I just started to feel so hopeless, and...and Imogene said that he had helped her. I thought it was safe.”
“It’s not your fault, Midge,” Lenny assures her. “Shit’s like candy, believe me, I know.”
“Did you get rid of them?”
“Yes, I did. Flushed.”
She nods. “Thanks.”
“I’m always here for you, Midge,” he says quietly. “You know how much I love you. Hell, I left because I love you.”
She doesn’t respond to that.
“Can I get you some soup?” he offers. “Please?”
Midge nods, swallowing. “Okay.”
“Thank you,” he breathes out, relieved. “I’ll be right back.”
She reaches out quickly, snatching at his hand. “Lenny.”
He stops, gazing down at her worried.
“I love you, too,” she says quietly, gazing up at him sadly. “You know I do.”
Lenny nods, stroking her hair gently. “I know, Sweetheart. I’ll be right back.”
She nods, loosening her grip on him, and letting him go.
