Come hear the first-ever choreographer-in-residence for the Smithsonian, “the poet-laureate of Washington Dance,” the “Diplomat of Dance,” Dana Tai Soon Burgess.

Join renowned modern dance choreographer Dana Tai Soon Burgess as he shares how his background as a gay, fourth generation, Korean American man inspires work that emphasizes multiculturalism, equity, and social justice. Dr. Michael Masatsugu (TU Associate Professor and Director of American Studies and Global Humanities) will interview Burgess about his dedication to telling Asian American Pacific Islander stories through dance as well as about his new memoir Chino and the Dance of the Butterfly. Dancers from Burgess’ acclaimed company will perform excerpts from their repertoire. Burgess will sign copies of his memoir, also for sale, at the event. Co-presented with TU Department of Dance. Part of the week-long Rosenberg Distinguished Artist Residency.

She's also a classically trained ballerina, choreographer, art model and survivor of sexual assault. Born and raised in Baltimore City, she is a graduate of the Baltimore School for the Arts and has over 20 years of dance training and experience. Trained in various styles of dance including classical and contemporary ballet, pointe, modern, lyrical, jazz, tap and hip-hop, she conceptualized Ballet After Dark after struggling with recovery following her sexual assault. Tyde-Courtney has trained with Debbie Allen Dance Academy, Dance Theatre of Harlem, Peabody Conservatory, Joffrey Ballet, Alvin Ailey and other institutions while receiving training from local dance pioneers such as Anton Wilson, Norma Pera and Stephanie Powell. "Wrought, Knit, Labors, Legacies" is the 2nd in the "Site See: New Views in Old Town" public art series. Jeyifous’ work frames Alexandria’s African American history through the lens of the city’s industrial and merchant history from the 17th to 20th centuries. Once a prosperous port city that was home to one of the largest domestic slave trading firms in the country, Alexandria was a major center for shipping and manufacturing with an economy inextricably tied to the work of enslaved and free African Americans. The installation seeks to stitch Alexandria’s story together, featuring symbols that represent Alexandria’s merchant and manufacturing history, including factories, tobacco warehouses, breweries and railways. The ground mural will incorporate African American quilting and textile motifs, which are historically tied to storytelling and oral tradition. When viewed as a whole, the pattern will become an abstract grid or map.
